Steve Young confident things 'will all work out in the end'

"Physically, I don't feel any different," said Young, who turns 38 in October but proved durable last season, playing all but one game.  I don't notice the years.  Mentally, you're almost a better player in a way because you've calmed down a lot.  You take things a little slower.  You handle things better.  I'm at a point where there's kind of golden years and your mind's mature and your body is still good. I'm enjoying those right now."

Bulked-Up Feterik Eyes Strong Senior Campaign
See: http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/31DB9105196D6976872567C200250A87

Since the end of the last football season, Kevin Feterik has gotten to know strength and conditioning coach Chuck Stiggins pretty well.  After a lot of time in the weight room, the quarterback has put on 15 pounds, and now tips the scales at around 205.  He's also added about 60 pounds to his bench press max.

Feterik says he's not the only one putting in extra work to make this season special.  "There's a whole new attitude around here," Feterik said. "Everyone has seen how the last couple years ended. We've taken that personally, and we're fed up with it.  "This has been the best offseason since I've been here."

Corso Has Fond Memories of BYU, '79 Holiday Bowl
See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/A1CAD92D7EBA12B4872567BF0024F3AF

ESPN college football analyst Lee Corso was a featured speaker at the recent inaugural Mountain West Conference football meetings in Colorado Springs, and he took the opportunity to reminisce about playing BYU in the 1979 Holiday Bowl.

Although his team was able to hold on and win the game 38-37 in the closing seconds, Corso poured out the praise to his competition.  "BYU's 1979 team was the finest offensive football team I ever saw in my life," Corso said.  "After the game someone asked me what my strategy was, how we had beaten BYU.  "I said our plan was to give Wilson 600 yards and let him kill himself.

See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/BCB5F88FCFCF74EB872567C200250833

On August 15, the BYU basketball team will be headed to Europe for a two-week tour against pro teams in England, Italy and Croatia.  In preparation this week, Steve Cleveland unveiled the beginnings of a new offense he's designed during the offseason.  Coach Cleveland will be taking nine players, primarily returning lettermen from last year's team.

The trip will be somewhat of a homecoming for Matt Montague, who returned from an LDS mission in London three months ago.  "One of our games will be in my old area," Montague said.  Coach Cleve also served his mission in England, and will travel early to take advantage of his first return to his mission field.

Gymnast Guard Young Sets Sights on Sydney
See:  http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=11475

Guard Young, who won the vault at the NCAA championships in April, is focused on making it to next summer's Olympic games in Australia.  Currently ranked 10th on the 14 member U.S. national team, Young is working towards making the Olympic team, which will consist of the top six members.

BYU men's gymnastics coach Makoto Sakamoto compares Young to former BYU and Olympic star Peter Vidmar, and pours on more praise.  "We've had several Olympic-caliber gymnasts," Sakamoto said. "But I think Guard probably has the best chance (of making the Olympic team) of anyone I've had in 14 years."

Later this month, Tiffany Lott-Hogan will be competing against the world's elite in the World Track and Field Championships in Spain.  Until then, however, she has more to do with her time than just prepare for the heptathlon.  Because sponsorship is hard to come by, the former national champion for BYU is working full-time to support her dream.

She and her husband of four months spend the day working for her brother's construction company, installing swimming pools in Provo.  During her lunch hour and after work, Lott-Hogan meets up with Y track coach Craig Poole to put in a few hours of rigorous training.

Next up?  Hopefully a berth in next summer's Olympic games in Sydney.  Until then, she'll keep her nose to the grindstone on and off the track.

BYU, Provo May Build a Baseball Stadium
See:  http:= //www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,110001918,00.html?

BYU and the city of Provo have entertained the idea of joining forces to build a shared baseball facility.  While the proposal, to quote Val Hale, is still "very preliminary," it seems to be an idea that would greatly benefit both sides.  BYU's Cougar Field is considered inadeq= uate and antiquated, and Provo would love to land the Helena Brewers of the Pioneer League, but needs a permanent stadium first.

The city and school agree on two key issues:  no beer sales in the stadium, and no Sunday games in Provo.  The Brewers are willing to make those concessions.  City officials experienced strong disapp= roval from the community over the Sunday play issue three years ago while tryin= g to land a different minor league team.

Add one more talented youngster to Steve Cleveland's stable of backcou= rt talent.  Travis Hansen, fresh off an LDS mission, has decided to lea= ve UVSC and play for the Cougs.  He will redshirt this season, after which he will be able to play three years for the Cougars.

Hansen, who has grown since his high school days, now measures in at 6'6" and weighs 210 pounds, and has an impressive 37 inch vertical.  His combination of jumping ability and size recently combined to shatter a backboard at a tournament in Southern California.

QB Gilbride Leaves BYU, Hopes to Play in Hawaii
See:  http:= //www.sltrib.com/1999/aug/08051999/sports/12901.htm

With opportunities for playing time in Provo looking scarce, sophomore quarterback Kevin Gilbride has decided to look elsewhere.  After con= sidering South Carolina and Pittsburgh, he opted to transfer to Hawai'i, where inc= oming head coach June Jones will install the run-and-shoot offense.

Jones coached on the San Diego Chargers' staff under Gilbride's father= , so they already had a connection.  "That had a lot to do with it," Gilbride stated.  After sitting out this season, he expects to have a good shot at landing the starting position in the fall of 2000.

NCAA May Exclude Teams that Won't Play on Sunday
See:  http:= //www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,110001886,00.html?

The NCAA Board of Directors is considering a change that could keep BYU's women's basketball and soccer out of post-season tournaments.  Traditionally, if BYU has qualified for the tournaments in those sports, they have opted to enter the tournament and forfeit if they reached a poi= nt where they were scheduled to play on Sunday.  The proposed change would keep BYU out of the tournament altogether unless they agreed to pla= y on Sunday.

If the legislation passes, "any school that would not change its polic= y would be ineligible to play in the NCAA tournament," said BYU athletic director Val Hale.  "We have no idea where this is coming from," Hal= e said. "It sounds pretty discriminatory. We're saying you can't preclude us from playing. You can't deny us a chance to play. It's our decision to forfeit or play. We won't change our religious beliefs."

Just a week after signing a 3-year contract with the Miami Dolphins, offensive tackle Joe Wong, a seventh-round draft pick from BYU, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee Sunday and will be placed on injured reserve. It is expected he will be out for the entire season.

Defensive Lineman, Ed Kehl, signed a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.

See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/42CCE642D97C235F872567C600250B75

After a week of soreness in his knee, wide receiver Ben Horton underwent an arthroscopic procedure last Friday to check for a torn ligament.  The ligament was fine, and Horton should be able to practice at full speed within a week.

Team orthopedic surgeon Kirt Kimball removed some scar tissue, and is confident that Horton will be fine.  "I saw nothing in the knee that prevent him from catching touchdown passes this fall," stated Dr. Kimball.

Feterik Prepared for His Final Year at BYU
See:   http://www.sltrib.com/1999/aug/08081999/sports/sports.htm

Over the past two years, Kevin Feterik has won duels with Paul Shoemaker and Drew Miller for the starting quarterback spot.  However, at times he has been met with less than enthusiastic fan support.  After working out through the off-season, the beefed-up senior is determined to show that he is the right man for the job.

With only new arrivals to the Cougar program backing him up, Feterik knows that his starting spot is pretty much assured, and he has decided to pay less attention to those who would boo from the stands.  The fans "are not going to bother me this year," says Feterik. "The coaches aren't going to take me out, so they're just going to have to keep booing, I guess."

Athletic director Val Hale is confident that the new style will be well received by the fans.  "It's good that they're interested and passionate about BYU athletics. It's wonderful," said Hale. "My advice to them is to wait and see it before you get excited."

For months, curious fans and reporters have tried to guess what the BYU athletic department's new look would be, but those in the know wouldn't leak a drop of information.  It looked like the school was going to be able to keep the secret until the official unveiling on Monday.  However, EA Sports made the logo public information by including it in its "NCAA Football 2000" video game.

"The fact we made it so far without a leak adds to my disappointment," said athletic director Val Hale. "But I didn't expect it to go this long without a leak."  Several more logos will be revealed on Monday, along with the new football uniforms.

Women's Soccer, Basketball Barred from Tournament Play
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,110003416,00.html?

For the first time, the NCAA Championships Cabinet has moved on its authority to hold schools that will not play on Sunday out of tournaments with Sunday games.  The championship games of the NCAA tournaments for both women's soccer and women's basketball are held on Sunday, and for that reason, BYU will not be allowed to participate in those post-season tournaments.

Understandably, athletes, coaches, and administration at BYU are upset and will appeal the decision.  "Every team shoots for the chance to compete for a national championship," said soccer coach Jennifer Rockwood, whose team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAAs in 1998. "Taking that away from us would not be fair."

McMahon Inducted Into Hall of Fame
See:  http://www.sltrib.com/1999/aug/08131999/sports/14761.htm

Former BYU great Jim McMahon was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame yesterday in South Bend, IN along with 21 other former players and coaches.  During his stay at BYU, McMahon rewrote the NCAA record book, setting 70 passing and total yardage records.  "They couldn't really keep me out of this (Hall of Fame) because I had the stats for it," laughed McMahon.  "I wish I could have played in that offense my whole pro career."

McMahon was under center during the 1980 Holiday Bowl, or "Miracle Bowl," in which the Cougars came back for an unbelievable 46-45 win over SMU.  Jimmy Mac was visibly proud of the team's accomplishments, saying  "Nobody could stop us because they had never played against an offense like that.  And fans always seem to enjoy watching that type of game more.  I know I hate watching games where all they do is run."

Yesterday BYU held a special press conference and made its new look public to the world.  (The above link includes pictures of the new logos and uniforms.)  Coach LaVell Edwards started off the "fashion show" by making a trip down the runway decked out in his new duds.  Following him were football players Kevin Feterik, Byron Frisch, Margin Hooks, and Rob Morris, all sporting new home uniforms.

The uniforms themselves feature a dark royal blue that appears to be navy, with highlights of tan and a white "bib" on the chest beneath the numbers.  A new family of logos was also revealed that used the same color scheme, and included variations of an animated cougar, mountains, and the traditional block Y.  For a history of changes to the football uniform, go to http://www.byucougars.com/football/features/helmet_evolution_ftb.html.

The new look has met with mixed reviews.  While the logos were almost universally applauded, the some reporters, as well as fans, weren't necessarily ecstatic about the change in uniforms.  Steve Cameron gives his opinion at http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/ByDocId/5267F43F46992E2A872567D000218645,and Tad Walch at http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/496D294BE1FAC5EA872567D0002741CD.

Sunday Is In, BYU Out With NCAA
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,110003666,00.html?

Writer Doug Robinson takes a jab at the NCAA for its decision to exclude BYU (and any other school that won't play on Sunday) from the tournaments for women's basketball and soccer.  He points out that BYU is being discriminated against because they opt to follow "something called the Ten Commandments, or, as it's known in some circles, the Ten Suggestions."

It would seem that it all boils down to money.  TV dollars seem to be making more and more decisions, and Sunday happens to be a big TV day.  The implications of this decision are huge, because if the NCAA has the audacity to exclude one of its own members from post-season play in one sport, then there's nothing to keep them from doing it in all sports.

Dabney Fills BYU's Need for Speed
See:  http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,110003524,00.html?

Running back Jaron Dabney, who was named the 1997 WAC freshman of the year, was unable to attend or play for BYU last year because of academic troubles.  After a year at a junior college, Dabney returns, and just in time to fill the void left by the departure of Ronney Jenkins and Junior Mahe.

The past year has been a growing experience for the 5'6" speedster.  "I've learned a lot," he said.  "You can be a famous BYU football player one minute and go back to being just a normal student the next.  Now, academics and God come first for me."

Besides playing in the backfield, the jitterbug-type runner will line up as a receiver and will return punts and kicks for the Cougars.

Vance Law Named New Head Baseball Coach
See:  http://www.byucougars.com/baseball/releases/19990816_bsb_rel.html

Vance Law, former major league all-star and dual-sport Cougar athlete player, has been named BYU's new head baseball coach.

"We had some very impressive candidates for our baseball coaching position," said BYU Athletic Director Val Hale.  "Vance emerged as the front runner once we looked closely at his remarkable credentials.  He brings a level of excitement as we continue to upgrade our baseball program.  His experience as a two-sport student-athlete, as a professional baseball player, and his initiatives as a coach will take us in an exciting direction for the new century."

The Provo High graduate was a three-time All-Western Athletic Conference shortstop at BYU where he played from 1974-78.  He was also a starting guard with the BYU basketball team where he lettered three seasons (1975-77). He was All-WAC Academic in both baseball and basketball.

Europe Trip Has Special Significance for Nielsen
See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/85AFB6E938C577C7872567CE00275EB6

The men's basketball team's European tour this month will be more than just a chance to play ball for sophomore Eric Nielsen.  Having recently returned from an LDS mission to St. Petersburg, Russia, the California native could get a chance to see his younger brother, who is serving in the London South Mission.  If they don't meet up, they will go almost four years without seeing each other.  Other perks for Nielsen include getting to brush up on his Russian during the team's stay in Croatia, and seeing parts of his father's mission field in Italy.

The trip will also be a mission homecoming for sophomore point guard Matt Montague and head coach Steve Cleveland, who both served their missions in London.

QB U. Reopens with Talent Vying to Backup Feterik
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,115004042,00.html?

After two years of quarterback controversy at BYU, things are back to normal in Happy Valley, with a clear-cut starter ready to enter his senior season and a group of talented youngsters prepared to back him up or take his spot if given the chance.

Freshmen Bret Engemann and Matt Berry, joined by sophomores Charlie Peterson and Brandon Doman are going all out to prove that they are the future of Cougar football.  "We're going to be going at it this fall," said Engemann. "May the best man win."

Coach LaVell Edwards wants to name a backup as soon as possible.  "We'll see how it goes. We'll make a decision shortly about how it will line up, but it's not necessarily etched in stone," said Edwards. "The problem you have in the fall is to adequately give them all an opportunity for an extended period of time. And the longer (the decision process lasts), the more difficult it is."

All four of the youngsters are confident in their abilities and are anxious to show that they can run the offense.  Those sentiments were expressed by Brandon Doman:  "I'm going to give them all a battle," he promises.  "The best man, for sure, will get the job."

Segovia Out Until October
See:  http://www.sltrib.com/1999/aug/08191999/sports/16182.htm

Damion Segovia, an exciting addition to the BYU receiving corps, will miss the first four to six weeks of the season due to a pulled left hamstring.  His leg was sore when he arrived in Provo last week, and he reinjured it while streaking down the left side of the field during drills at the Cougars' first practice on Tuesday.

Segovia is a 6'1", 190-pound junior with reported 4.3 speed who turned down a scholarship from Arizona State and walked on at BYU with the understanding that the first available scholarship would be his.  He had previously committed to play at Arizona coming out of the Juco ranks, but changed his mind after breaking his collarbone during his sophomore season.  Segovia was steered toward BYU by the family of his LDS girlfriend.

Dabney, Robertson and Gray Are Happy to Be Back at BYU
See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/CB39DB1450632540872567D1002740AF

A trio of key players on the 1999 Cougar roster is back on the playing field this season after off-field problems that could have kept them from suiting up this fall.  1997 All-WAC freshman of the year Jaron Dabney has returned after sitting out a year due to academic problems.  Of his year spent at Blinn JC in Texas, he said, "I learned to be a responsible adult and take care of my grades."

Starting cornerbacks Brian Gray and Heshi Robertson are also back in camp.  Gray was rumored to be hovering on academic suspension, but hit the books over the summer and squared things away academically.  Robertson, who missed the Liberty Bowl and all of school ever since due to an honor code infraction, has completed the process to be eligible to attend BYU again.  "You wouldn't believe how much I was thinking," Robertson said.  "I can't express how much I learned."

Tahi, Staley Get Crash Course in Cougar Football
See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/ABDE4DD71EBE1A40872567D300273EB7

Instead of being greeted with the "ease them into it" philosophy that is normally used when dealing with true freshmen, Fahu Tahi and Luke Staley may get a baptism by fire by seeing significant playing time early in the season.  Somewhat of a void exists at the tailback position because of the departures of Ronney Jenkins and Junior Mahe, and the two newcomers will probably be called on to fill their predecessors' shoes.

While such on the job training isn't the norm for the Cougars, the pair feels like they're up to the challenge.  Nevertheless, Coach Edwards doesn't plan on letting the team's fate rest on the youngsters' shoulders.  "We're in no big hurry," Edwards said.  "It'll just depend on what they can do."

Feterik Promises Cougars Will Pass
See:  http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,115004407,00.html?

If the first week of practice is indicative of what will happen on the field this season, look for the BYU football team to put the ball in the air early and often.  So far, the offense has worked almost exclusively on pass plays, and starting quarterback Kevin Feterik is excited about it.  "The pass is going to open up the run this season," he said. "It's going to be the opposite of last year."

Engemann Passes Other Backups
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,115004763,00.html?

Judging by workouts so far this fall, it would appear that Bret Engemann has established himself as Kevin Feterik's backup.  Quarterbacks coach Robbie Bosco acknowledged that a pecking order is already beginning to develop.  "You've got to have the snaps (to prepare for the season) and everybody can see who's getting them," he said. "That's how the situation stands right now."

Rumors have circulated that Charlie Peterson and Brandon Doman would follow the lead of Drew Miller and Kevin Gilbride, Jr. by transfering if it appeared that they weren't going to be playing, but they both insist that at least for the time being, they will remain Cougars and fight their way up the depth chart.

Although the coaches wanted to see how Couch did as a starter for a game, "Detmer may have sealed his lock on the starting quarterback job with his performance, finishing the game 13-of-21 for 102 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions."

"That's what I expect from Ty," said coach Chris Palmer. "We know what Ty can do, and what you saw (Saturday night) was pretty much it. Couch, on the other hand, is only going to get better."

Former BYU running back, Dustin Johnson, is taking advantage of his new opportunity in Seattle.  In Seattle's one-point preseason loss to San Francisco, he scored a touchdown on a one-yard dive.  Called one of the hardest hitters on the team, Johnson is almost assured of making the regular season squad.  The game was heavily laden with former cougars.  Itulu Mili started for Seattle at tight end.  Coaching the Seattle team, is former BYU assistant coach Mike Holmgren.  And, of course, directing San Francisco's offense is our very own, Steve Young.

Texas RB Joiner Excited to Come to BYU
See:  http://cougarfan.com/teams/football/news/1999/08-23.html

Although not official, the verbal commitment received by BYU from Isaiah Joiner is as good as "guaranteed."  That's the term Joiner used to describe his recent decision to come to BYU after completing his upcoming senior season at Sealy High School in Sealy, TX.

Joiner is a 5-10, 180 lb. tailback with breakaway speed.  Why has one of the top 10 running backs in football-heavy Texas, who has received interest from Texas A&M, Texas, and Nebraska, committed early to BYU?  The answer is simple.  "I had a feeling about BYU," Joiner stated.  Attending high school with Jaron Dabney also played into his decision.

New Offense on Display in FB Scrimmage
See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dharc1999.nsf/Bydate/872567A2007A0EB0872567D800273965

Approximately 80% of the plays in Tuesday night's intrasquad scrimmage came out of the shotgun, and it should be representative of play during the regular season.  "Pretty much what you saw is what we're going to do," said Kevin Feterik.

The offense used just about every possible formation there is with the shotgun, lining up three, four and five wide receivers, two backs, and two tight ends, and even a little option play thrown in by Brandon Doman.

As expected, the Cougars' high powered defense was impressive on the field, but the offense still got a chance to showcase the new shotgun attack.  Feterik went 9 of 15 for 83 yards, all against the defensive first unit, and the other quarterbacks also did well out of the gun.

Call of the Y; Quarterbacks Come from All Over
See:  http://www.sltrib.com/1999/aug/08241999/sports/17708.htm

Although recruits are faced by the possibility of being buried in a depth chart of more capable, experienced quarterbacks, year in and year out, high school slingers sign with BYU and go to Provo with the hopes of getting their shot at being the next QB hero.  With so many guys in line for the job, many a blue chip recruit never really gets a chance to play, but they keep on coming, because, as Brandon Doman says, "Everybody wants to be a quarterback at BYU."

Partly because of the mission factor, BYU recruits more QBs than most programs, and at times a logjam can develop.  In turn, competition runs high and quarterback controversies are a constant.  In the end, though, everybody is ready for his chance.  In the words of Charlie Peterson, "Sooner or later, I'm going to get an opening and I'm going to exploit that sucker and never look back."

Though currently ranked by the NFL Scouting Report as the top linebacker for the 2000 draft, Rob Morris says that's not the reason he opted to remain at BYU for his senior season.  "I didn't stay to improve my draft status," said the middle linebacker. "I stayed to win a championship."

Cougar Club Promotes "True Blue"
See:  http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=656

The Cougar Club has launched a new "True Blue" business program which will help the Provo community show their support for BYU athletics.  According to Dave Broberg, assistant director of the Cougar Club, part of the program includes giving balloons, window painting supplies and T-shirts to businesses near Cougar Stadium.  "We want people who come to Provo on game day to know that the Cougars are here," said Broberg.

Pending approval from city officials, the Cougar Club will also paint cougars and Ys on roads that lead to the stadium.  "The idea is to get off I-15 and see nothing but blue and white," said Cougar Club director Mike Middleton.

Businesses that are interested in being involved can join the Cougar Club.  The annual fee of $250 or more is a donation that will not only benefit scores of BYU student athletes, but that will pay itself back.  "Businesses that do participate find that it all comes back to them in terms of visibility and popularity," Middleton said.

Key players continue to be bitten by the injury bug on the BYU football team.  Throught the first week of practice, the Cougars' injury list is in the double digits, and many of those players figure to start or see signifigant playing time.

Cougars Catching On to the Pass Game
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,115005886,00.html?

Last year, the BYU football team's offensive attack was more ground-oriented than normal, in part because of talent at running back, and in part because of an inexperienced group of receivers.  This year, however, with an experienced quarterback and set of receivers, the passing game looks to be a strength for the Cougars.  "The burden is on me and them (the receivers) this year," said starting QB Kevin Feterik.

Although there are still several underclassmen in the receiving corps, the group looks to be improved over last year.  Returners Margin Hooks and Ben Horton lead the group, and newcomers Jonathan Pittman, Damion Segovia, and Chris Hale all show lots of promise.  Sophomore Michael Westbrook was also recently declared academically eligible and has shown improvement over last year.

After some roller-coaster years of ups and downs in the running department, BYU hopes to have a running back that will consistently perform into the next century.  Fahu Tahi is a big bruising tailback who ran for over 5,700 yards at Granger High in the Salt Lake Valley, and is expected to continue his performance for the Cougs.

Along with fellow freshman Luke Staley, Tahi came to BYU with the understanding that he would be competing for a backup spot behind Ronney Jenkins and Junior Mahe.  Now Tahi, who happens to be a cousin to Mahe, just may step in as a starter when the Y takes the field against Washington on September 9.

Morris On Search and Destroy Mission

Although middle linebacker Rob Morris claims he doesn't necessarily like the attention, the college football world has definitely taken notice of him.  His personality combines with his hard-nosed playing style to make him a fan favorite on and off the field.

After a junior campaign that saw him rack up 114 unassisted tackles, Morris returns with the goal of helping his team to win the inaugural Mountain West championship.  He's also a prime candidate to win the Butkus award.

Backup QBs Loyal to BYU

Contrary to reports that backups Charlie Peterson and Brandon Doman will bolt Provo in search of playing time elsewhere, the two insist that they will be sticking around for the long haul.  Doman, who was an option QB at Skyline High in SLC, has for the first time made public mention that he might consider switching positions.  Coaches have wanted him to play safety or receiver.

Peterson's bold declaration that "There's absolutely zero chance of me leaving" comes at a time when his impressive play might just turn him into Kevin Feterik's top backup.  It was earlier thought that Bret Engemann had a lock on the spot, but Peterson seems to be more prepared to execute the offense.

The men's basketball team is back from its European tour, and we're finally finding out what the results of the games were.  The team performed admirably, going 1-4 against professional teams in England, Croatia and Italy.  Last year, the University of Cincinnati and Xavier played on the same tour and both came home winless.

Todd Christensen and Mekeli Wesley were team leaders during the tournament, and Michael Vranes wowed crowds with his play as well.  In Zadar, Croatia, Wesley had 26 points as he went up against two 7-footers.  A highlight for Christensen came as he nailed four 3-pointers in two and a half minutes in England.

Brighton's Cowan Verbally Commits to BYU Football
See:  http://www.sltrib.com/1999/aug/08271999/sports/18613.htm

One of the most highly regarded football players in the Utah high school ranks gave BYU an early commitment this week.  6 foot 4, 210 pound Lawrence Cowan will be a Cougar next season after finishing his senior year at Brighton High School.  A three year starter in both basketball and football, Cowan is an all-state tight end and defensive end, and will likely play outside linebacker for the Cougs.

Despite being recruited by the likes of Northwestern, Washington, Oregon State, Arizona, Stanford, Colorado, Nebraska, and Michigan State, Cowan said his choice really came down to BYU and Utah.  Cowan stated, "I felt that BYU was the place for me.... I am excited and honored to be part of the great football tradition at BYU."

Elan Edwards, a new safety for the Cougars, will make his Cougar debut against his former coach in a couple of weeks.  After playing a year at Colorado, Edwards came to the Y, rejoining his high school friend Will Snowden, and earned himself a spot on the team.  Now, his former coach Rick Neuheisel is coaching the Washington Huskies, who come to Provo the Thursday after next.

Also included at the above link are notes about LaVell Edwards getting bowled over at Tuesday's scrimmage, a Wednesday practice visit by Junior Mahe, and a retrospective look at BYU football in the '90s.

A year ago today the first two "Insider" emails were sent out -- a Pro Watch and a Weekly Calendar.  We've come a long way since then!  The above link tells some of CougarFan's history and gives the reasons we started the service in the first place.  Thanks for all of your interest and support during our first year!

Recent CougarFan Changes
See:  http://www.cougarfan.com

CougarFan.com has received a few facelifts in the last few weeks.  Probably the most noticeable is the implementation of BYU's new color scheme.  More importantly, the site is easier to navigate thanks to a sections bar across the top of the main page, and drop down boxes that enable visitors to jump quickly to news or pages about specific sports.

You'll also be pleased to see that with school and the fall sports season starting up again, the weekly calendar is back, right on the bottom of the main page.  Anytime you're wondering what BYU sports events will take place during the next seven days, you'll know where to go.  The full calendar for fall semester is also online, and in addition, a "printer friendly" calendar is available.

Also, remember that the "Fanzz Football Challenge" is in full swing.  Go to http://www.cougarfan.com/interactive/ to predict the scores for this season's football games.  You can win great prizes and have fun competing with friends.  Don't delay -- only nine days left until the season starts!

Football Players Go After Each Other

During Saturday's situational scrimmage, the BYU football team turned a game into something much more serious.  When Coach Edwards placed the ball in the red zone, the offense opened things up by scoring repeatedly, which didn't set well with the defense.  Tempers flared and the play turned very intense, even igniting a few scuffles.  Senior fullback Kalani Sitake chalked up the emotion to being tired of playing each other in practice.  "It's all a matter of us wanting to get on and play the University of Washington," he said.

The vaunted defense was obviously miffed by all the scores, and turned up the intensity in the goal-line drills, repeatedly stuffing the offense.  "They (the defense) started screaming for the coaches to put the ball on the one-inch line because they'd stop us," quarterback Bret Engemann said.  "It got nuts."

Cougar Defense Expected to Shine

Although only four full-time starters from last year's highly ranked defense return to this year's team, those in the know predict that the unit will be as good as, or better than, last year's run-stuffing D.  Many of this year's projected starters saw plenty of action last year, and the newcomers look like they'll step right in where their predecessors left off.

All Sport Passes on Sale Thursday
See:  http://newsnet.byu.edu/show_story.cfm?number=1236

BYU students can buy their season tickets at the Marriott Center starting Thursday morning.  For the third year, the "all-sport pass," which gives admission to all NCAA-sanctioned sports, will come with the football tickets.  While tickets for the six home football games are assigned seating, the all-sport pass gives admission to all home events in the other sports on a "first come, first served" basis.  "We started it to make it easier for students to come to the games and it has been a huge hit," said Mike Deaver, Athletic Marketing Director.

Tickets go on sale at 7 a.m. Thursday, and with this year's outstanding home football schedule and so many highly ranked teams in other sports, the passes will probably sell fast.  The package is priced at $56.

Morris Getting Tired of Attention
See:  http://www.sltrib.com/1999/aug/08291999/sports/19392.htm

Senior linebacker Rob Morris has been somewhat of a magnet for cameras and sportswriters during his time at BYU, but now the man known as "Superfreak" or "Freight Train" is starting to get fed up with all the hype.

His play on the field (and accompanying antics, such as making snow angels in the end zone after returning an interception for a touchdown) is only half the reason he's so popular with the press and the fans.  He's also articulate and fun to listen to.  "I hear from teachers and classmates all the time how surprised they are that I can complete a coherent sentence;" he said, "that I can use polysyllabic words.  It's like middle linebackers aren't supposed to be able to do that."

Morris is still willing to talk your ear off about any one of a thousand things, but when the conversation returns to football, he rolls his eyes.  "We could be good this year," he said.  "But . . . let's just go play.  It's go time now.  I'm ready.  There's been too much talk.  It's time to back it up."

Chiefs GM's cussing causes Tait to walk out of talks
See: http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/1999/990831/01435333.html

John Tait arrived in Kansas City ready to sign a new contract with the Cheifs after a month of holdout.  However, after the Cheifs GM repeatedly cussed at Tait, Big John walked out and went home.

Agent Ethan Locke said Tait, who served two years on a Mormon mission, walked out of Peterson's office rather than be cursed at.  "None of you guys would like to be treated like we were treated," said Locke. "He used the 'F' word four or five times when he was yelling at John and trying to intimidate him. John's a strong Mormon. After the second one, he stood up and said this is over.

All Systems Go for Wesley
See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dharc1999.nsf/Bydate/872567A2007A0EB0872567DD00274E59

At the beginning of last basketball season, Mekeli Wesley was far from where he wanted to be.  His focus had been drawn from basketball to personal problems, and his performance on the court showed it.  Going against advice to redshirt a year, he played for most of the season, but didn't live up to his performance as a freshman.

Things have changed in a big way, though.  Wesley has dropped back down to his high school weight, he's in shape, and his shot is sighted in.  His play during the team's recent European tour was key to the team's success, as he notched over 20 points in three of five games.  He was able to play aggressively in the low post as well as hit outside shots, and now he's ready for a new season.
