New BYU Guys Backed into a Corner (Deseret News)
See: http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,185008479,00.html?

"Danny Phillips, who arrived at BYU just last week, couldn't have hand-picked a tougher opponent for his first NCAA football game. Come to think of it, he couldn't have selected a bigger stage on which to play his first NCAA football game.

Ready or not, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound transfer from Cerritos Junior College in California will start at cornerback for the Cougars against No. 2-ranked, defending national champion Florida State in the 2000 Pigskin Classic, to be seen on national television."

Turn Up the Heat:  Cougars Try to Work Out Cramps (Provo Daily Herald)
See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/AllStories/C38E13FF275948B6872569360020063A

As hot as temperatures have soared during the BYU football team's first practices, it's nothing compared to the humidity and heat the Cougars are in for in Jacksonville, FL, for their opener against Florida State.  So, Cougar support personnel are already preparing for heat-related disasters with players.  However, like the Cougars found out at Alabama two seasons ago, heat can cause all kinds of problems, even if precautionary steps are taken.

Thus, in addition to taking on two physicians well-practiced in the art of giving IVs, BYU's training staff has purchased eight Cool Zone units.  These are giant fans hooked to a water pump that can shoot air and mist as far as 30 feet.  They will be used on the Cougar sidelines in the Gator Bowl for the Pigskin Classic on August 26.  The Cougars have also made arrangements for evaporative swamp coolers, rented from the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL.

BYU's Winning Margin (Deseret News)
See:  http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,185007338,00.html?

Two of BYU wide receiver Margin Hooks' favorite pastimes are (a) catching the football and (b) talking.  Not necessarily in that order.  During Mountain West Conference media day in Las Vegas last week, Hooks was in rare form, freely voicing his opinions and thoughts on a host of subjects, ranging from misperceptions about his hometown of Waco, Texas; to how journalists should do their jobs (he plans to graduate in broadcast journalism in December); to how he calls his coach, the legendary LaVell Edwards, "L-dog."

Through it all, Hooks has quietly proven to be one of the best pass-catchers in school history.  Only 943 yards stand between him and the all-time BYU receiving record.  Question is, can the Cougars' inexperienced quarterbacks get the ball to him and the other talented wideouts?  "All they have to do is throw the ball up there," he said, "and give us a chance.  We'll catch it."

Staley Shows Off His Speed (Provo Daily Herald)
See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/Dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/033ABCD3D7D79F7D87256934001B5C2A

Luke Staley says he's 100 percent.  Ready as a spanking new battery.  And to prove it, one week before BYU's football team kicked off fall camp the sophomore running back ripped off a 4.4 time in the 40-yard dash.  "He was explosive," strength and conditioning coach Chuck
Stiggins said.  "It was like he was shot out of a cannon."

Stiggins is definitely impressed with the conditioning efforts the team members put in during the summer.  "We've had guys work their tails off in the weight room and it shows,"  Stiggins said.  "Our offensive linemen look like tight ends.  We've had some guys post some outstanding marks."  The article lists some of the high marks posted by players in the weight room.

Rigell Happy to Be Back in the Fold (Deseret News)
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,185008224,00.html?

When BYU opened the 1999 season at home on ESPN against Washington, Mike Rigell sat in front of a television and agonized.  "It was hard to watch," Rigell remembered.  "I wanted to be out there."  Rigell scored five touchdowns for the Cougars in 1998, but after the season, he transferred to Montana, along with quarterback Drew Miller.  In the summer, he changed addresses again, departing Missoula, Mont., for Foothill Junior College, where he played last season.  He declines to discuss why he left BYU in the first place.  "It's all in the past," he said.  "It's over with.  I'm ready to play."

Rigell's return to the team was made easier by the acceptance of his coaches.  "There was no question in our mind we wanted him back," said coach LaVell Edwards.  "He's an exciting player and will help us on special teams and with his receiving abilities.  He's fit right in."

A Bite, A Bike Crash, and a QB Hunt (Standard-Examiner)
See:  http://www1.standard.net/stories/byu/08-2000/FTP0114@byu@06byu@Ogden.asp

Robbie Bosco had a horrible run of bad luck this summer.  First, the BYU quarterbacks coach was hospitalized for two days in June after being bitten by a black widow spider.  Then last month, he dislocated a shoulder in a mountain bike crash.  "It can't get worse," he said Saturday at BYU's media day.  Don't look now, but Bosco still needs to groom a quarterback in time for BYU's Aug. 26 opener against No. 2 Florida State in the Pigskin Classic.

Bosco is considering rotating quarterbacks, which would be a departure from tradition at BYU.  Before this year, I was always against it," Bosco said.  "Now, I've got different thoughts.  I think we can find two guys who together could get the job done, but nothing's been decided."

Edwards, Bowden Trade Jabs (Provo Daily Herald)
See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/Dhtoday.nsf/Sports/7D9FBCEA0726018887256930001EAF13

Speaking during a teleconference Wednesday to discuss the 11th annual Pigskin Classic, Florida State's Bobby Bowden said BYU coach LaVell Edwards originally wanted to play the game in Provo.  "I said that was too big of an advantage," said Bowden, entering his 25th year at Florida State and 35th overall.  "So I said, 'I'll meet you halfway.'  I proposed Jacksonville, and he fell for it."

"I'd like to propose to Bobby that we go and play an 18-hole golf match and count that as the game," Edwards said.  "After looking at film of his team and watching his swing, I think I'd have a better chance at (golf)."

The two legendary coaches did get more serious as the press conference went on.  "It's a heckuva matchup," Bowden said.  "Anytime you put BYU and Florida State together, it's almost like Florida State and Florida.  "You've got wide-open offenses that people like to watch.  I'll tell you what, we'll open the pro season a week early."

Lavell Announces Retirement at Season's End

LaVell Edwards, the seventh-winningest coach in the history of college football and the man many
consider to be the father of the modern-day passing game, announced Thursday that he will retire as
Brigham Young University's head coach at the conclusion of the 2000 season.  Below are just a sampling of the numerous articles being written about Coach Edwards.

A writer in Cleveland explains in this article about how painful an injury to the Achilles tendon is and how difficult the recovery process is.

"Detmer will be in shock after surgery, which the Browns backup quarterback had yesterday at Cleveland Clinic.  He won't really understand until today, when the painkillers start to wear off and the reality of the next three months starts to sink in. It means pain, your leg feeling as if it's about to explode when you keep it lowered and the blood flow is messed up."

What ever happened to Jaron Dabney, the 1997 WAC Freshman of the Year, that was expelled from BYU because of Honor Code violations?  He has transferred closer to his Sealy, Texas home to a small school in Huntsville, Texas called Sam Houston State University.

On Sunday, Dabney all off a sudden became the starting tailback for the Sam Houston State Bearkats.  Joe Rauls, the first team running back, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and may have ended his season.  The Huntsville Item reports that the starting job "will likely fall to junior Jaron Dabney, a transfer from Brigham Young."

Game Overview

BYU opens its season for the third time in the Pigskin Classic.  The Cougars have played in more Pigskin Classics than any other team in the country.  BYU's last Pigskin appearance came in 1996 when they defeated Texas A&M, 41-37 on route to an unprecedented 14-1 season and a Cotton Bowl victory.  The Cougars' lone previous meeting with Florida State was in the 1991 Classic, with the Seminoles coming out on top, 44-28.

Following the departure of Norm Chow, the BYU offense should show a few new wrinkles.  Armed with a bevy of returning receivers, the Cougars are hoping their newly-named QB starter, Bret Engemann, will be able to get the ball into the experienced hands of Margin Hooks and company.  Luke Staley, the 1999 MWC Freshman of the Year, appears healed of injuries and will see some playing time against the Seminoles.

The Cougar defense returns a strong group of key players from last year's squad.  The heart of the defense is the defensive line anchored by senior defensive end Setema Gali, Jr.  Although first-round draft pick Rob Morris has departed from the team, the linebacker corps could prove to be as solid as any the Cougars have ever fielded.  The two returning safeties are also proven, and were a part of the defensive backfield that has had at least one interception in 10 of the last 11 games.  The defensive unit as a whole should once again be powerful, but can't afford many injuries because of lack of depth at key positions.

Florida State kicks off another season vying to match their National Championship run of a year ago.  The players on the FSU roster are accustomed to winning, having lost only three games in the past four years.  The Seminoles are riding an NCAA record 13 straight seasons of at least 10 wins and have finished all of those seasons ranked #4 or higher.  Coach Bobby Bowden will bring the strongest team in FSU history to Saturday's game, with 11 players who can bench press at least 500 pounds.  While the Jacksonville venue is officially a neutral site, the Seminoles will undoubtedly enjoy the support of tomahawk-chopping fans, who have helped FSU remain undefeated at home since 1991.

Florida State is perhaps best known for their suffocating defensive play, and they return several key players from last year's exceptional squad.  In 1999, the Seminole defense forced 21 fumbles and led the nation with 22 interceptions, while holding opponents to a meager 28% 3rd down conversion rate.

Implications

BYU has never beaten Florida State, head coach LaVell Edwards is retiring, FSU is the defending national champions, and they are kicking off the college season on national TV.  If there is a game that could launch them into a great season, this is the one.  Realistically, the game has few implications for the Cougars, who are focused more on winning a conference in which they are picked to finish third.

Florida State is trying to repeat an amazing 1999 season in which they won the National Championship.  In order for that to happen, they must win every game, and do it convincingly.  The game is theirs to lose, and they don't lose very often.  They have a 21-game regular season winning streak.

Players to Watch

BYU

#6, Luke Staley (RB) -- Barely off ankle and shoulder surgery, Staley may not play a full game at tailback, but should help take some load off the inexperienced quarterbacks.

#9, Jared Lee (S) -- BYU's leading tackler now has a year of experience under his belt and should receive the accolades he missed out on last year.

#13, Bret Engemann (QB) -- After only throwing 4 passes all of last year, the new BYU starting quarterback has some serious expectations to fulfill.

#14, Margin Hooks (WR) -- Poised to become BYU's all-time leading receiver, Hooks also wants to impress pro scouts during this his senior season.

#17, Charlie Peterson (QB) -- Promised that he will share playing time with Engemann, BYU's second string quarterback is looking to prove he should be starting.

Florida State

#6, Derrick Gibson (S) -- Named as a pre-season All-American, Gibson has received more press lately for his off-field activities than his athletic abilities.  Despite some legal infractions, he will bring his 4.3 forty speed to the field this Saturday.

#13, Marvin Minnis (WR) -- With Peter Warrick off to the NFL, Minnis will be getting more balls thrown his way.  Seminole fans chant his nickname, "Snoop," every time he snags a pass.

#16, Chris Weinke (QB) -- FSU's 28 year-old quarterback led the ACC in passing last year with 3,013 yards and 25 TD passes.  The first three-year starting QB in the Bobby Bowden era, he has rewritten the FSU record books.  The only sub-200 yard passing performance of his career was the 1998 Virginia game, when he played a half before suffering a season ending neck injury.  He is a frontrunner in the Heisman Trophy race and has a current streak of 218 pass attempts without an interception.

#23, Travis Minor (RB) -- This junior tailback rushed for 815 yards and 7 TDs in 1999, despite being hampered by an ankle injury for most of the season.  He boasts an average of nearly 5 yards per carry.  He has been the Seminole's leading rusher in each of the past three seasons.

#27, Tay Cody (CB) -- He was the only starting freshman on FSU's 1997 team, and has emerged as one of the top cover corners in the country.

Records to Watch

BYU holds an ongoing NCAA record of 312 consecutive games without being shut out.

Owen Pochman took over the all-time BYU scoring title in the last regular season game of 1999, and will continue to kick his way deeper into the record books this season.

Margin Hooks only needs ten yards to jump two places on the Cougar career receiving yardage list.  Currently ninth with 2213 yards, he can jump to seventh on the list, passing Mike Chronister and Glen Kozlowski on the way.

Injury Report

BYU

Jernaro Gilford (CB) -- The speedster from Los Angeles who was slated to start this year will sit out the season because of disciplinary action resulting from an Honor Code violation.

Josh Lowe (LB) -- He is mostly recovered from the back problems that have plagued him.

Scott Jackson (OL) -- Billed as the finest Cougar lineman, the recently returned missionary broke his fibula this summer and should join the team halfway through the season.  He is a redshirt freshman.

K.C. Bills (LB) -- This freshman sensation from Colorado will most likely miss the season to rehabilitate his back.

Mike Marquardt (DL) -- One of the Cougars' top incoming recruits, he recently underwent shoulder surgery and will redshirt this season.

Florida State

Jeff Chaney (RB) -- He is currently not allowed to practice until his academic performance improves.

Greg Moore (WR) --He is out for the season with an injured knee.

Talman Gardner (WR) -- He is out indefinitely with an injury to his pelvic region.

Brian Allen (LB) -- A high right ankle sprain caused him to miss practice last week, but he's expected to play Saturday.

Tommy Polley (LB) -- The Seminoles' leading tackler last year, he's expected to sit out the opener against BYU with an injured knee, but may see limited action depending on his game-time condition.  His targeted return is two weeks later vs. Georgia Tech.

Kendyll Pope (LB) -- He has been hampered by a groin strain.

Game Recap

From: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/recaps/20000826/bbiffc.html

Florida State scored 15 points in the first 12 1/2 minutes, held BYU without a touchdown and cruised to its 13th straight victory, the longest current winning streak in Division I-A.

However, the Seminoles also went scoreless for nearly the entire second half, showed flaws in their kicking game and looked very little like the explosive squad that roared to the 1999 title.

Atrews Bell, one of five FSU players from Jacksonville, caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Chris Weinke to make it 13-0 late in the first quarter. He added a six-yard TD run on an end around early in the second period to give the Seminoles total control.

A junior who caught just 14 passes for 202 yards last season, Bell is being counted on to pick up the slack for the departed Peter Warrick, who was among college football's best players last year.

Bell caught four passes for 37 yards and was one of eight receivers used by Weinke, who threw for 318 yards with career highs of 32 completions and 50 attempts. The 28-year-old improved to 22-1 as a starter.

With a new quarterback in redshirt freshman Bret Engemann, the Cougars looked disoriented and were held scoreless late into the third quarter, putting their streak of 313 games with points in jeopardy.

Owen Pochman's 42-yard field goal with 2:19 left in the period kept alive the streak but BYU has been held without a touchdown in its last two games. The Cougars suffered a 21-3 loss to Marshall in the 1999 Motor City Bowl.

The game featured a matchup of long-time coaches Bobby Bowden of Florida State and LaVell Edwards of BYU. Bowden improved to 305-85-4, nine behind Amos Alonzo Stagg for fourth on the all-time list. Edwards, who announced last week that his 29th season would be his last, fell to 251-96-3.

Engemann was 12-of-28 for 139 yards, two interceptions and three sacks. He split time with junior Charlie Peterson was 6-of-18 for 88 yards, one interception and two sacks. The Cougars also were held to minus-2 yards rushing.

BYU went three-and-out after the opening kickoff and Weinke engineered a seven-play, 46-yard drive that he capped with a 19-yard TD pass to Jevon Walker, who caught eight passes for 70 yards. Weinke scrambled right and off his back foot flung a pass to the back of the end zone to a wide-open Walker.
