Professional Baseball Comes to BYU (Salt Lake Tribune)
See: http://www.sltrib.com/2000/dec/12052000/utah/50854.htm

"There's no crying in baseball and, when Provo's new professional team takes the field next summer, there will be no beer, coffee or even caffeinated sodas in the stands either.  Sunday home games will be out, too, because the Pioneer League team will play -- for now -- at Miller Park, Brigham Young University's new $7 million baseball/softball complex.

"Despite those conditions, the Helena Brewers are thrilled about moving to Provo.  The rookie-level team -- an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels -- will relocate in time for the season opener in June 2001."

See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/Dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/5F988F240603E454872569AC00250E5B

"The last time I checked, Steve Cleveland didn't go out on the court in those baggy shorts and attempt jump shots in that ugly 80-52 loss.  I didn't see Dave Rose from the old Houston Phi-Slama-Jama out there throwing up alley-oop passes.  Try as I may, I didn't see Nate Call on the court dribbling or even Jeff Judkins hoisting up 3-pointers.  They couldn't. And they didn't. It wasn't their job. It was your duty.

So, that leaves us with the only real evidence that counts.

You guys got to start playing up to expectations. So far, you haven't."

Coach Nathan Call to Answer Subscribers Questions

Assistant BYU basketball coach Nathan Call answers subscriber questions in a weekly feature called "Call's Court".  The subscriber that asks Coach Call the best question will win a BYU basketball T-shirt (marked with *).

Send your questions to callscourt@cougarfan.com .

*Question from Jeff Robinson: "Many of us are concerned about this year's weak non-conference schedule and the impact that weak schedule might have on our post-season chances and on Marriott Center attendance.  Can you let us know why the schedule seems to have been downgraded each year during Coach Cleveland's tenure?  Also, should we expect this schedule to be typical of future schedules, in terms of its relative strength?"

Coach Call: Actually, we had a tough pre-season schedule last year.  It was ranked the toughest in the Mountain West.  We played a lot of  teams that were very good basketball teams but maybe didn't have the same name recognition as Arizona or Arizona St.  Most of the teams we played last year won their league or were in the top three.  The teams we play this year are return games from last year.  Also, if  you add in the teams we could play in Hawaii (USC, Iowa St., Mississippi, Boise State) it becomes a great schedule.  Boise State beat Gongaza by 25 points last week.

Sometimes it can be difficult to schedule big name teams because they won't play you on your home court.  A team like North Carolina or Notre Dame will play you at their place but they won't return the game.  Teams lose their gate money when they play a team on the road.  Most of these teams don't play on the road in the pre-season.

Coach Cleveland is committed to having a quality pre-season schedule.  We are very interested in playing top level programs, but they have to be interested in playing us.

Question from Aaron White: "Dr. Call, what are you guys going to do for big men next year with so many of the tall ones leaving on missions, also will you look to bring in a JC guard to replace the ever quick Lyday?"

Coach Call:  We are a little concerned how we are going to replace Mekeli in the low post next year.  We have a few options but we have not made any decisions yet.  We will wait to see what each freshmen decides to do with their mission plans and how other players in program develop.

We signed Jared Jensen out of Fremont High school to help us in the low post next season.  We are very excited about his potential but it would be unfair to ask him to carry us next year.  We like the way our team is shaping up next year with the return of Mark Bigelow, but need to have another post player emerge.

Question from Rick D. Roskelley: "It is very clear this year that the team is very deep in certain spots. With all that depth and all the pushing for playing time, what is the reaction of the players?"

Coach Call:  Practices have been very competitive this year.  Our players understand that our depth makes us a better team.   They enjoy playing with and against good players in practice.  They know this will make them better players in the long run.

Everyone would like 40 minutes a game but not many would teams survive playing a 5-man rotation.  Our ultimate goal is the NCAA tournament, it would be tough to survive the season without depth.  Every team is a little different but I think the players like the fact that we have depth.

See: http://cougarfan.com/teams/basketball_m/news/2000/12-16.html

"Trent Whiting scored a game-high 22 points in his long-awaited BYU debut, and Mekeli Wesley knocked in two free throws with eight seconds to play, as the Cougars held off Utah State 69-67 Saturday at the Marriott Center. BYU improves to 6-2 on the season with the win, while the Aggies drop to 6-2.

Whiting made an immediate impact in the Cougar offense, starting in his first game back since transferring from Utah last season. He and senior Nate Knight, a Sandy, Utah native who transferred from Kentucky last year as well, became eligible Friday when the fall semester ended. Knight also saw significant action in his first game for the Cougars, finishing with six rebounds in 18 minutes of play."
