BYU Must Win To Have Chance at Top Prep QB (Provo Daily Herald)
See: http://www.harktheherald.com/article.php?sid=14571

"Think of all BYU's All-America quarterbacks through three decades. None were considered among the top five high school quarterbacks nationally when recruited by BYU.

"This fall, BYU has a chance to go after and sign No. 1.

"His name is Ben Olsen. He is an LDS athlete at Thousand Oaks High near Los Angeles. At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, he is a lefty like Steve Young."

Too early to talk about football season?  Never!  College Football News is the first publication to have their 2001 football predictions ready.  They predict BYU to tie for second with CSU and SDSU, while the top spot goes to...UNLV.

While their predictions seem very odd, it is still fun to look forward to September 1 vs. Nevada.  Click on the link to BYU for more detailed information and predictions.

Bradley to Play for German Olympic Team? (Dallas Morning News)

Shawn Bradley has always had the dream of playing in the Olympics.  With not much of a chance to get an invite to the U.S. National Team, he has turned to another option...Germany.  Since Bradley was born in Germany while his father was in the miliary, he is eligible for German citizenship and thus eligible to represent Germany in international competition.

"The Mavericks free-agent center is in the process of submitting paperwork to obtain a passport that he hopes will help him secure a spot on the German team – playing alongside Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki. Mavericks assistant coach Rolando Blackman will serve as an assistant coach for that team."

Former Cougar Willis Becomes Historic Hire (Provo Daily Herald)
See: http://www.harktheherald.com/article.php?sid=14336

"Former BYU running back Jamal Willis didn't become the head football coach at Payson High to make history.

"But history finds you when you're the first black head football coach in Utah."

Ex-Raider Finds Bliss Through Family, Religion (Salt Lake Tribune)
See: http://www.sltrib.com/2001/jun/06122001/sports/sports.htm

"There are perceptions about Todd Christensen, some evident, others misleading.  The former tight end who made five Pro Bowls playing for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders was once written up and -- in some simple minds -- off, as a "man for all seasons," he says of himself now that he is not all that multidimensional."

Detmer Anxious for Action (Cleveland Browns)
See: http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news_room/building/arts/267.0.html

"Ty Detmer’s season ended before it started last year as he ruptured his Achilles early in just the second preseason game against the Chicago Bears on Aug. 12. He’s been battling back every since and is looking to get back into action."

See: http://www.cfl.ca/CFLNews0106/10_southpaw.html

The Stampeders had signed the former BYU star last November, however were forced to release the southpaw quarterback after learning he had signed a contract with the San Francisco Demons of the XFL."

Morris' Rehab to Restart (Indianapolis Star)
See: http://www.starnews.com/print/articles/newcolts03.html

"So, how is Rob Morris' on-going rehabilitation progressing?  Uneventfully, if the first week of the Indianapolis Colts' voluntary summer school is a reliable yardstick.  In this instance, uneventful is encouraging."

Left-side Move Now Feels Right for DE Frisch (The Tennessean)
See: http://tennessean.com/sports/titans/archives/01/04/05649101.shtml?Element_ID=5649101

"Titans defensive end Byron Frisch looks back on his rookie season and says there are plenty of things he would like to forget.

''Nothing really went my way,'' he said."

Here's an article about a recruit that the BYU coaches are hoping is a future Cougar:

Recruit Olson is a Special Quarterback, Special Kid (Rivals100)
See: http://rivals100.alliancesports.com/content.asp?CID=25411

"If you talk for long with Ben Olson, you get the feeling that you’re talking with a special kid.

"It’s not merely the fact that he could be the best high school quarterback prospect in the country, it’s more because of his demeanor, his attitude and his outlook."

BYU Football Looks To Avoid LSU, USC (Salt Lake Tribune)
See: http://www.sltrib.com/2001/jun/06172001/sports/106447.htm

"Faced with hazardous-to-their-health football schedules in the next few football seasons, Brigham Young officials are working on getting out of arrangements to play nonconference games against Louisiana State and USC."

"We're trying to take a look at the schedule and maybe balance it a little better," athletic director Val Hale said.

Sports Illustrated picked up on the article and created the headline "BYU Bails Out".  Are they bailing out?  Talk about it with other fans at the CougarFan.com Discussion Board.

Poll: Should BYU drop LSU, USC from schedule?

* Yes, the schedule is already tough enough
* No, we must play more good opponents
* Don't care who they play, just bring on football season

Iorg Drafted by Blue Jays While on Mission (St. Petersburg Times)
See: http://www.sptimes.com/News/061301/Sports/Baseball_calls_life_b.shtml

"On his 22nd birthday, Isaac Iorg's childhood dream came true. Nearly a week passed before anyone showed up to let him know. It could be another week before we discover whether he cares any longer."

"Iorg is a baseball player on a mission. The kind of mission that has more in common with faith than success. Iorg is nearing the end of a two-year Mormon mission that took him to an economic wasteland known as East L.A. and separated him from all that he thought he knew."

BYU to Host Tulane Aug. 25 in BCA Classic (Press Release)
See: http://cougarfan.com/postredirect.asp?m=1247

"The Gazelle Group, producer of the Black Coaches Association Classic, announced BYU has been selected to host Tulane in the 2001 BCA Classic, pending approval from the NCAA. The fifth-annual BCA Classic is scheduled to be held Saturday, Aug. 25 at LaVell Edwards Stadium, beginning at 2:30 p.m. (MDT). The 1998 Liberty Bowl re-match will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

"Officially, BYU's participation is pending an exemption from the NCAA that would allow the Cougars to participate in back-to-back preseason games. Under NCAA regulations that allow a team to participate in one preseason game every four seasons, BYU is required to seek the waiver after participating last season in the Pigskin Classic, vs. Florida State.

"Tickets for the BCA Classic will go on sale immediately. Current season-ticket holders and students have until Wednesday, July 18, to take advantage of a special season-ticket-holder discount. Season-ticket holders can purchase sideline chair-back seats for $35, sideline bench seats for $22 and endzone seating for $14 until July 18th. General ticket prices range from $40 for sideline chair-back seats to $17 for endzone seating. To purchase tickets for the BCA Classic or to receive additional information, please contact the BYU ticket office at (801) 378-BYU1.

BYU Declined Chance to Play K-State in BCA Game (Witchita Eagle)
See: http://web.wichitaeagle.com/content/wichitaeagle/2001/06/27/sports/ksufb0627_txt.htm

BYU's quick invitation to the BCA preseason game came about because the previously scheduled matchup of Kansas State-SMU fell through. The new BYU-Tulane matchup surprised Kansas State, which still were expecting to play another opponent in the game -- which might have been BYU.

"BYU and Tulane turned down chances to play K-State in a BCA game, K-State senior associate athletic director Jim Epps said.  On June 11, Epps said, he spoke to a BYU associate athletic director about a visit by the Cougars to KSU Stadium for an Aug. 25 or 26 BCA game.  But he was told that Cougar coach Gary Crowton thought it would be too tight a squeeze for BYU's Sept. 1 opener against Nevada."

Draft Prospects Slim for Wesley, Lyday (Provo Daily Herald)
See: http://www.harktheherald.com/article.php?sid=16713

"BYU's success on the basketball court probably won't spill over into the NBA draft.  At least not this year.

"The NBA draft will be held today at 5:30 p.m. MDT in New York. No Cougars are expected to be called in the two-round, 56-player affair."
