Game Overview

Overview

BYU gets back to the playing field after two weeks that saw a mid-season mini-quarterback controversy come and go.  Now anxious to go out and get the offense clicking again, the Cougars travel to Logan for what is always a high spirited, high scoring game.  Freshman Curtis Brown will make his first collegiate start at running back as he fills in for an injured Marcus Whalen.

Utah State is going through its traditional tough schedule, have dropped games to the likes of Utah, Nebraska, and Iowa this season.  The Aggies have shown promise during their games this year, but each week it seems that a different facet of their game needs tweaking.  Last week it was pass defense, as Boise State ran up 63 points on the Ags in a track meet of a game.  When it comes down to this game, you can usually throw out previous records because it will be a dogfight.  The Aggies will be playing in front of a rare sell-out, and they will do everything in their power to give their home crowd a good show.

Implications

BYU now has an unimpressive four-game losing streak away from home, and this will be as good of a chance to break the string as ever.  With conference play opening up next week, the Cougs need to fine-tune the offense and get momentum back on their side with a win.

Utah State always counts this as one of their biggest games of the year, and the opportunity to take a shot at the Y in Romney Stadium looms large for the Aggies.  A win over the Y would make the season a success for USU.

Player Notes

Players to Watch

BYU

#5, Bret Engemann (QB) -- After a tough month of inconsistent play, it's time for him to step up and take charge of the team and play with the consistency that he showed against Syrause.

#49, Brady Poppinga (DE) -- He's leading the defense insacks so far this season, and will be lining up opposite his big brother, Casey, who plays tight end for Utah State.

Utah State

#3, Kevin Curtis (WR) -- A one man offensive show for the Aggies, he led the nation in receptions for the 2001 seson.

#13, Jose Fuentes (QB) -- A three year starter, this gunslinger holds the ongoing total passing yardage school record at Utah State.  At 6'3" 221, he has the size and strength to move the ball one way or the other.

Records to Watch

BYU holds an ongoing NCAA record of 342 consecutive games without being shut out.

Injury Report

BYU

James Allen (CB) -- He was put into a walking cast this week to protect his ankle, but will play.

Andy Ord (WR) -- He will miss this week's game with a pulled hamstring.

Hanale Vincent (OL) -- He'll miss the game with a bad knee.

Marcus Whalen (RB) -- He's going to sit out to make sure that he recovers fully from a groin strain suffered at Georgia Tech.

Vince Xanthos (OL) -- He injured the arch of his foot, and will see limited time at the guard spot

Utah State

Mark Estelle (CB) -- He underwent what Coach Dennehy calls a "substantial" knee sprain.

Jamar Glasper (S) -- The starting strong safety, he's been hobbled this week with a sprained ankle.

Ade Jimoh (CB) -- A hero last week with a blocked punt, he is also nursing a knee sprain.

Game Overview

Overview

BYU is only a week removed from its biggest comeback in in school history, having rallied from 27 points down to defeat Utah State.  This week, Gary Crowton would like his squad to avoid the need for such heroics by starting the game a little more quickly.  So far this season, BYU has been outscored 30-7 in the first quarter, with their only first-quarter points coming in the opening minutes of the first game of the year.  The team will be looking to show the same poise and execution that they demonstrated in the second half of last week's game, when veterans like Reno Mahe rallied the troops, and young players like Curtis Brown stepped into a more important position on the team.  In last year's game against the Falcons, Doug Jolley set an MWC single-game receiving yardage record as the Cougars ran out to a 63-13 lead early in the second half before the coach called off the dogs.  This year's offense hopes to establish that same rhythm to carry them through the remainder of the season.  One of the bright spots for the offense has been their red zone offense; the Cougs have scored every time that they have gotten inside the opponents' 20 yard line.

The Cougar defense faces a unique challenge in trying to stop the triple option offense.  Traditionally, BYU has defended the Falcons well, and has racked up a fairly lopsided record against the Academy through the years.  As a unit, the Cougar defense ranks second in the nation for interceptions, having snagged 13 balls through their first five games.  The Cougar D has recorded an interception in every game this year, as well as in every game in 2001.  It may be difficult to continue that string against a Falcon Team that only throws a few times per game. Indidentally, Brandon Heaney, who played J.V. quarterback for Air Force before his mission, leads the Y with three picks this season, including last week's game-sealer.  Penalties have been a trouble spot for the Cougars, who have had at least 10 in four of their five games.  The special teams are doing well; BYU leads the nation in net punting.

Air Force is a team that was picked as high as fifth, and as low as eighth in the preseason MWC polls, yet is having more success than any other team in the conference right now.  They stormed out of the gate with a 48-7 victory over Northwestern, and also pulled off a victory over a resurgent Cal squad.  They lead the nation in rushing and are the only Mountain West team to have won a conference game so far this year.  The Cadets have put together a six game winning streak and are playing with a lot of confidence.  Their 38.2 points per game average is by far the highest in the conference, and. . .

The Academy also owns the 2nd lowest scoring defense in the MWC, at 17.2 points per game.  The scary thing is that Fisher DeBerry claims that his team hasn't played anywhere near their potential yet.  Although their rushing defense has looked questionable at times, they play well as a team and have been able to make big stops at crucial times.  The Air Force special teams have created a lot of good situations for them this year, with a solid kicking game giving them good field position to work with.  The Falcons have also blocked three kicks so far this season, led by sophomore cornerback Nate Allen with two of his own.  The Falcons have blocked at least three kicks each season for 13 consecutive years.

Implications

BYU opens the conference season with an opponent that is playing as well as any in the country.  If the Y can secure a victory over the Falcons, it will put them in a good position for the rest of conference play and bring them home from a long road trip on a positive note.

Air Force has already beaten Utah and New Mexico, and can take a strong grip on their MWC lead with a win over the Cougars.  Besides the conference race, the Falcons are making noise on the national scene as one of only two non-BCS conference teams without a loss this season.  They would love to carry an unblemished record into their meeting with undefeated Notre Dame next week, although Fisher DeBerry is much too down-to-earth to get caught up in any such hype.

Player Notes

Players to Watch

BYU

#7, Levi Madarieta (LB) -- He and his fellow linebackers will be called upon to seal off the perimeter of the field and keep the Air Force backs from turning upfield for big gains.  Madarieta's field awareness and good hands have helped him to snag two interceptions this year, including the game winner against Hawaii.

#43, Michael Madsen (S) -- He's played through a shoulder separation of his own this season, but is back in good shape.  A graduate of Columbine High School, he'll be playing in front of friends and family in Colorado.

#80, Toby Christensen (WR) -- Besides his normal receiving duties, he showed that he has a pretty good touch on the ball when he passed to Jason Kukahiko for a fourth quarter touchdown in Logan last Friday.

Air Force

#8, Wes Crawley (CB) -- The only member of the team that got any pre-season recognition from the media, he is one of the leading tacklers for Air Force.  He returned a fumble 52 yards for a touchdown last Saturday.

#9, Leotis Palmer (RB) --The second leading rusher on the team behind Harridge, this 5'8" bowling ball uses his brute strength to average over seven yards per carry.  He has also completed both of his pass attempts this year for 70 yards and a touchdown, which has earned him a modest pass efficiency of 559.0.  He won the "Mr. Intensity" title for being the team's hardest worker in the weight room during the off-season.

#11, Chance Harridge (QB) -- The Academy has built a tradition of having outstanding quarterbacks, and this year is no exception.  This gutsy junior from Georgia is averaging over 100 yards rushing per game and ranks third nationally in scoring.  Last week he led his team to a 48-7 victory over Navy while throwing and running for over 100 yards.

Records to Watch

BYU holds an ongoing NCAA record of 343 consecutive games without being shut out.

BYU holds an ongoing MWC record of nine straight conference wins.

Injury Report

BYU

James Allen (CB) -- Though he has been able to provide valuable minutes in the defensive backfield and as a kick returner, he has been hampered all season by a high ankle sprain.  He has been in a walking cast for the last couple of weeks to allow it to rest and heal, and his playing status will be a game-time decision.

Aaron Francisco (S) -- He dinged his shoulder last Friday, but will play tomorrow.

Jernaro Gilford (CB) -- His right knee has forced him to be a patient man.  What was supposed to be ready for fall practice is still not 100%, and may not be for the rest of the season.  He didn't dress down for last week's game, and his condition for this week is still to be determined.

Ryan Keele (OL) -- His shin got cut last week, but that's just part of being a lineman.

Reno Mahe (WR) -- He's probable after playing with some painful bruised ribs in Logan last week.

Andy Ord (WR) -- He's probable after missing the Utah State game with a pulled hamstring.

Mike Sumko (DB) -- Last week in Logan, he aggravated the groin injury that has bothered him since the Hawaii game.

Marcus Whalen (RB) -- He missed last week's game with a pulled groin, but is expected to play tomorrow.  Having Curtis Brown as a capable backup makes his return less pressing.

Vincent Xanthos (OL) -- He missed some practice this week with a bad foot.

Air Force

Anthony Butler (RB) -- He missed the Navy game with an ankle sprain and is questionable for tomorrow.

Monty Coleman (DE) -- He will probably miss his second game in a row with an injured right leg.

Marcello Graddy (LB) -- The shoulder he hurt last week shouldn't keep him out of the game.

Matt McCraney (LB) -- He's out indefinitely with a knee injury.

Scott Meyer (OL) -- He's also out with a knee injury.

Dan Shaffer (RB) -- This hardworking fullback was lost for the season when he tore his lateral collateral ligament in the season opener against Northwestern.

Wayne Southam (C) -- He injured his knee in last week's Navy game and will likely not play tomorrow.

Nick Taylor (DT) -- He missed last Saturday's game with a bad ankle, but will probably be back this week.

Game Overview

Overview

BYU returns to Provo for what has appropriately been chosen as Homecoming, since it is the team's only home game in a seven week stretch.  The Cougars hope to play up to the expectations of the Homecoming crowd after a painful loss in Colorado Springs last week.  So far this year, BYU's two home games have been their best of the season, and they sport a nine-game home winning streak, not having lost in Provo since October 21, 2000.  Matt Berry will make his debut as the starting quarterback for the Cougs, and couldn't have chosen a better time to do it.  UNLV's pass defense is not among the country's best, or the conference's for that matter.  The Rebels only have two interceptions on the season, which puts them second to last in the nation.

UNLV is struggling through another season, averaging 15 points less than their opponents so far this season.  Like BYU, they are also undergoing some quarterback shuffling.  Senior Jason Thomas has played sporadically over his career, and will split time under center this week.  The Rebels are 0-2 on the road this season, and are 1-8 all-time vs. the Cougars, but they know that they can win in Provo, since their only victory over the Y came in a stunning upset of the Jim McMahon-led 1981 team.  Two BYU coaches, Mike Empey and Barry Lamb, have served on UNLV's staff in the past.

Implications

BYU needs this home win to get some kind of momentum started.  A loss to UNLV would be disastrous to the team's morale and could effectively shut the Y out of the Mountain West race just two weeks into conference play.

UNLV would count a victory over the Cougs as one of their biggest ever.  It would instill some pride and hope in a team that is struggling.

Player Notes

Players to Watch

BYU

#8, Matt Berry (QB) -- The redshirt freshman will get his chance to make his mark in BYU football history as he starts his first game since leaving high school as one of the highest recruited athletes in the Pacific Northwest four years ago.

#32, Marcus Whalen (RB) -- He and Curtis Brown will need to be effective to help take pressure off of Berry and allow him to get into a rhythm.  UNLV's rush defense is the strongest part of their D, so Whalen will need to be at the top of his game.

#92, John Denney (DE) -- He has taken over the starting spot that his brother used to hold.  He and his mates on the D-line will need to put pressure on UNLV's passing game and stop Haro's runs.

Air Force

#6, Dominique Dorsey (RB) -- A huge game against BYU last year helped this 5'6" scatback earn Freshman All-American honors in 2001.  Used more in a kick returner role, he set a school record last season with a kickoff return average of 34.6 yards.

#34, Joe Haro (RB) -- Known as "Jersey Joe," he's the kind of player that coaches love.  He's an old-school type of player who gives his all on the field.  After playing as a backup defensive back and key special teams player in 2000, he switched over to offense last year and had a successful season.  He's the top returning rusher in the MWC and is a Doak Walker Award candidate.

#55, Adam Seward (LB) -- This big sophomore is the conference's leading tackler this season with over 10 per game.

Records to Watch

BYU has scored in 344 consecutive games, which is an ongoing NCAA record.

Injury Report

BYU

Jernaro Gilford (CB) -- He's received medical clearance to play, but his knee still doesn't allow him to be anywhere near 100%.  He will probably sit out again this week.

Paul Walkenhorst (LB) -- He missed most of the Air Force game after taking a shot to the head, and the lingering effects of his concussion have held him out of practice all week.  He may still be able to play and will be a game-time decision.

UNLV

Ryan Claridge (LB) -- Tabbed as one of the top defenders in the conference, he's expected to miss the entire season with a hernia.

Zach Gorhan (OL) -- He's expected to miss Saturday's game with an injured knee.

Keith Kincaid (OL) -- He's also sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury.

DeJhown Mandley (TE) -- He's listed as questionable with an ankle sprain.

Troy Mason (WR) -- This dangerous punt returner is expected to be back on the field after suffering a groin injury.

Game Overview

Overview

BYU, licking its wounds from two of the most disappointing games in recent memory, heads to Fort Collins for a nationally televised chance at redemption.  The Cougs will stick with starting quarterback Matt Berry for a second game, and hope for good things to come from the offense.  At times, discipline and execution have been missing, as evidenced by the fact that the Cougs have been penalized at least ten times in five of their seven games.  The Cougs hope that this week will be a continuation of the trend that they have set so far this season.  Through their first seven games, the team is undefeated in its three weekday games, while having dropped the four Saturday games.

Colorado State is a program that has been on the rise since the arrival of head coach Sonny Lubick a decade ago.  He is one of 17 active Division IA coaches with at least 100 career wins, and has led the Rams to a school record of eight straight seasons with at least seven wins.  Despite his success in establishing CSU as arguably the most dominant team in the conference over the past decade, he has had little success against BYU, winning only two meetings.  The Ram offense is an efficient one, led by tough-guy quarterback Bradlee VanPelt and top running back Cecil Sapp.  CSU is excited to play in front of a home crowd for only the third time this year.

Implications

In somewhat of a role reversal, the Cougs are the team that enters the game hoping for an upset that will salvage their season.  A win over the Rams would help the team's morale, as well as their ticket sales for the remainder of the home schedule.  It would also help BYU avoid its first 0-3 conference start in decades.  Additionally, the Cougs need to win three of their last five games to be bowl eligible at the end of the season, so the time to start is now.

Colorado State would like to meet Air Force next week on even ground, with the winner coming out as the conference champion.  To do that, they need to beat the Cougars tonight.

Player Notes

Players to Watch

BYU

#8, Matt Berry (QB) -- He will be getting the majority of the snaps this game, without being rotated with Lance Pendleton.  With a game under his belt, his ability to get into a rhythm will be key for BYU's success.

#20, Reno Mahe (WR) -- A level-headed leader, he produces results week in and week out.  He is by far the team's leading receiver with over 500 yards on the season, and averages nearly 14 yards per grab.

#75, Scott Young (DT) -- After coming from Dixie State as the top junior college defensive lineman in the country, he's getting more and more playing time as he makes big plays in the opposing teams' backfields.

Colorado State

#5, Dexter Wynn (CB & PR) -- This speedster is a dangerous threat on punt returns; he currently ranks 4th in the nation at 17.3 yard/return.

#11, Bradley VanPelt (QB) -- BYU fans got a taste of VanPelt's running ability last year and will be sure to see more of his big-play scrambling in this contest.  He already has 506 yards rushing this season.

#32, Cecil Sapp (RB) -- An all-conference selection as a junior, he had to sit out the 2001 season when he had a tumor removed from his heel, he has stormed back to show that he's one of the premiere rushers in the conference.  He has scored in the last 12 games in which he has played, including all eight this year.

Records to Watch

BYU has scored in 345 consecutive games, which is an ongoing NCAA record.
