Game Overview

BYU begins its quest for the WAC title on Saturday, traveling to intimidating Bulldog Stadium for a night game.  Matching up against winless FSU should give the Cougar offense the chance to extend the offensive continuity that it showed last week.  As in seemingly every game this year, the Cougars will depend on the defensive backs to slow an opponent's productive passing game.  The defensive backfield's solid play throughout the season has allowed the front seven to concentrate on stopping the run.  BYU is currently ranked #9 in the nation for rushing defense, allowing a mere 75 yards per game.  Watch for them to get through the offensive line and put pressure on the quarterback this week.

Fresno State is averaging 244 yards per game through the air, and will probably test the skies this week in lieu of running against BYU's tough front line.  Their offensive line is banged up right now, and had to be shifted around against Nevada-Reno last week.  The Bulldog defense has had a hard time containing opposing teams so far this year, giving up 400 yards and 30 points per game, as well as allowing opponents to convert nearly half of their 3rd down attempts.  Special teams could make a difference in this game, as both teams have had standout games from several individuals.  The Bulldogs boast the 16th ranked punt returner in the nation in Payton Williams, and the 21st ranked place kicker, Jeff Hannah.  Those two positions are countered by BYU's Aaron Roderick (#10 punt returner in the nation) and Owen Pochman
(#14 kicker in the nation).

Implications

BYU travels to Fresno for possibly the last time, as they will be leaving the WAC after this season.  Being the first conference game of the year, it is important for the Cougars to come out of it with a win.  It's been over a year since the Y has won on the road, and they desperately want to break that five game losing skid that includes games at Rice, UTEP, New Mexico, Alabama, and Washington.

Fresno State is a program with a storied past that is hurting for a win right now.  All three of its losses this season have been close ones to good teams (Colorado, Texas Tech, and Nevada-Reno), but that doesn't change their goose egg in the win column.  They would love nothing more than to hand BYU a loss and get a fresh start on the season as they enter WAC play.

Players to Watch

BYU

Drevin Millerik (QB) -- BYU found its passing game last week in this multi-faceted player, who threw for 313 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Rob Morris (LB) -- He is BYU's defensive point leader on the year, and is a real team leader.

Margin Hooks (WR) -- He had a breakout game against Murray State, recording the fifth highest receiving yardage total in the nation last week with 5 catches for 179 yards, while several other long bombs were just out of his reach.

Jason Walker (WS) -- At one interception per game, he's ranked #2 in the nation.  His pickoff in the end zone last week thwarted Murray State's attempt to get on the scoreboard first.

Fresno State

Jaime Kimbrough (RB) -- This 5'8" 205 lb. fullback IS Fresno State's running game, averaging 104 yards rushing, and 157 all purpose yards (19th nationally) per game.

Billy Volek (QB) -- He leads the Bulldog offense that has passed the ball successfully this year.  He's accounted for an average of 226 yards of total offense per game.

Tim Skipper (LB) -- Even though he's just a sophomore, and only measures 5'7", he's the Bulldogs' leading returning tackler, with 117 last year.

Records to Watch

BYU holds the current NCAA record of 290 consecutive games without being shut out.

Injury Report

BYU

Will Snowden (RB) -- He hasn't played since the opening game of the year because of a hamstring pull.

Brad Martin (LB) -- Ever since his car accident on September 11th, he's been suffering from whiplash, which has given him severe headaches.  He hasn't participated in practices since, and was held out of the Murray State game to allow his muscles to relax.  He should be ready to go on Saturday.

Chris Ellison (SS) -- He was also held out of the Murray State game to rest his partially separated shoulder.  He is expected to play.

John Tait (OT) -- He sprained his ankle in last week's game, but is cleared to play.

Feterik still Cougars' starting QB
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/yo0j51kf.htm

"Kevin Feterik is still the man at BYU.  Despite a slow start against Murray State, which drew some jeers from the Cougar Stadium crowd, LaVell Edwards announced the junior will start Saturday's WAC opener at Fresno State.  "Kevin's the quarterback," Edwards said. "We'll decide as we go along at what point and time or how we're going to involve Drew (Miller)."

"Kevin's fine. I talked with him. He understands it," Edwards said.  "Nobody likes to be booed. He's not hung up about it. He'll go to work, prepare and get ready to play."

BYU coaches: These Bulldogs can and will bite
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/AA657CD6E02AE19A8725669000505C59?OpenDocument

"BYU's coaches want their players to get one message, loud and clear.  Winless Fresno State is no Murray State, no pushover, no easy W.  "They're snakebit," BYU assistant coach Barry Lamb said. "They should be 2-1, and with a little bit of luck, they could have been 3-0."  Oh, the Bulldogs have had plenty of luck, it's just been exclusively bad.

Exhibit No. 1: In the opener at No. 15 Colorado, quarterback Billy Volek fumbled two inches from scoring a touchdown with 26 seconds left in 29-21 loss.  The Bulldogs led most of the game, and still hoped to score and force overtime with a two-point conversion.

Exhibit No. 2: Fresno State led Texas Tech 28-27 with 48 seconds to go on Sept. 19. On third-and-10, running back Jamie Kimbrough was hit after taking a handoff and running up the middle.  The ball popped loose and flew through the air to a Texas Tech linebacker, who caught it and ran into the end zone for a touchdown and a 34-27 victory.

Exhibit No. 3: The Bulldogs led 17-14 with 5:09 to play Saturday. But Nevada scored two touchdowns, on a 51-yard pass and a 66-yard interception return, within four plays and held on to win 27-24."

Coug Tight End Ofahengaue May Miss BYU's WAC Clash With Fresno State
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10011998/sports/54868.htm

"Tight end Tevita Ofahengaue will probably miss BYU's game at Fresno State on Saturday after suffering a bruised kidney during the Cougars' 43-9 victory over Murray State last week.  A 6-foot-2, 245-pound sophomore, Ofahengaue is the Cougars' third-leading receiver with eight catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. His absence would make junior Carlos Nuno the starter.

Nuno is a 6-4, 245-pounder from Modesto, Calif., who was recruited by Fresno State.  Nuno moved to tight end from the defensive line last spring, and has played in all four of the Cougars' games but has caught only one pass for 21 yards. Freshman Brett Keisel will be his backup."

Roderick Rocks for the Cougars
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10011998/sports/54869.htm

"Aaron Roderick cannot claim any particular knowledge of the science to catching punts.  He just does it.  And well.

Four games into the season, the BYU senior wide receiver is the WAC's leading punt returner, and he ranks 10th in the nation with his 17.4-yard return average.  It's a stark contrast to last season, when Roderick fumbled a punt against Arizona State and let it so affect him that he lost his punt-returning job to Jaron Dabney and never did rediscover his confidence -- even on offense.

Dabney went on to become the WAC Mountain Division Freshman of the Year, but failed to make grades and was ruled ineligible for this season.  That left the returning job to Roderick, who has made the most of it.  ``I love it,'' he said. ``I don't catch a lot of balls on offense. I'm not the go-to guy, I just play my role. But punt returning is where I feel like I can have an impact on the game.''

League's new name won't have any MPAC
The Deseret News

"Bolting the WAC to create a new conference appears to be a win-win situation in the long term for BYU, Utah and the other six breakaway schools.  But for now, the losses keep piling up.  Last weekend, their football teams posted a subpar 3-5 record, including three humiliating defeats to opponents from the lowly Big West Conference.  The latest setback has come at the hands of a relatively obscure volleyball league.

Because of legal obstacles, officials from the departing schools can't christen their new league the Mountain Pacific Athletic Conference (MPAC), their top choice.  The California-based Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, a 14- school collegiate men's volleyball league made up of teams from the Pac-10, Big West and WAC (including BYU), owns trademark rights to the "Mountain Pacific" name, thus spiking the MPAC possibility.

That means the likely winner of the less-than-inspiring name-the-league derby is . . . Mountain West Conference.  "As a result of our research, Mountain West is the leading candidate," said Skousen, who chairs the subcommittee handling the selection of a conference name.  An  official announcement is not expected for at least two or three weeks, pending the final decision by the school presidents."

Orem High's Hale could be catch in Division I
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/AllByDate/67E1E1594D1AF49E8725668F006E81BC?OpenDocument

"Chris Hale is one guy you'd never peg for a lightning rod.  But that's exactly what he's become at Orem High School this season.  He's drawing double-coverage from defenses. He's become a litmus test for instate college recruiting of local kids.  He's playing for a senior-oriented program that's shuffling players into major colleges.  And, he just keeps getting picked as one of most-admired young men in the valley.

He's getting attention from Ivy League schools, service academies and film requests from some Pac-10 schools and BYU, Utah State, Boise State and UNLV. But he's a natural for the Cougars.

Chris' father is Val Hale, associate athletic director at BYU, a school that has already loaded up on half a dozen receivers from Utah.  Yet, BYU is also a school that has failed to keep outside talent at that position on the field and in the classroom, namely junior college transfers Jonathan Pittman and Tacoma Fontaine, and California prep sensation Eugene Childs.

"He's as good as half BYU's receivers right now, and would probably be about fourth on BYU's receiver depth chart," claims OHS offensive coordinator Joe Evans, a former Cougar quarterback."

New Coug corners making names as lethal enforcers
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/AllByDate/67E1E1594D1AF49E8725668F006E81BC?OpenDocument

"The H-Bomb and Gray Death.  They're whacking and dashing, bumpin' and runnin' and generally waylaying prima donnas to the ground.  They come like a bad rash and stick like a sunburn. They've got moves and footwork. And, no, they're not Riverdancers.  They're the new cornerbacks in town.  And after a month's debut in Provo, you know who they are.  Heshi Robertson and Brian Gray.

Cornerback coach Brian Mitchell can see the day Robertson and Gray are as good as Morgan and McTyer.  "Omarr stepped right in and Timmy, we had four two years and they were good," Mitchell said.  "But we're requiring more of Heshi and Brian. We're pressing more. We're playing more man and requiring them to read receiver routes and make adjustments."

No. 5 BYU Womens Volleyball Opens WAC Season against Utah
http://www.byucougars.com/volleyball_w/releases/092998.html

"The Cougars begin the WAC season with a match against rival Utah Friday night in Salt Lake City. BYU comes into the match having won 10 of 11 contests with the sole blemish being delivered by No. 2-ranked Long Beach State.  The match features two top WAC teams as BYU was voted to take first in the WAC Pacific Division in the pre-season coaches poll while Utah was voted to finish third. "

Meldrum Ready to Help Cougar Womens Cross Country Defend Crown
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10011998/sports/54871.htm

"Courtney Pugmire Meldrum is all rested up, which is probably not the best news for the rest of the nation's college cross country runners. It means the All-American is ready to start helping the BYU Cougars terrorize everybody again.  ``I'm excited,'' she said.

And why not?  The Cougars are the defending national champions -- owners of perhaps the least-known title in school history -- and Meldrum has been held out of the their first two meets because her outdoor track season lasted so much longer than most of her teammates'. "

'Unbelievable' start dooms Cougars
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/ys0jff6j.htm

"LaVell Edwards has seen a lot of things in his 26-plus seasons as BYU's head coach. What he saw in Saturday's 31-21 loss at Fresno State, however, was one for the ages.  "I can't ever remember getting off to a start like that," Edwards said.  "It was unbelievable what kept going wrong."

The Cougars (2-3) lost fumbles on their first three possessions — off a kickoff return by Mike Rigell, a pass reception by Carlos Nuno and a backfield bobble by starting quarterback Kevin Feterik — while the previously winless Bulldogs built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.  Another fumble in the second quarter, this one from running back Ronney Jenkins, led to another score (a 31-yard field goal) as Fresno State increased its lead to 24-7 by halftime."

Weak WAC Provides Hope for Struggling BYU
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10051998/sports/55542.htm

"Coach LaVell Edwards does not think any team will breeze through the WAC season undefeated, which is another way of saying Brigham Young still has a shot at winning the Pacific Division.  But first place in anything is a long way off for the Brigham Young football team. After losing the conference opener 31-21 Saturday to Fresno State, the Cougars are reeling -- again.

``We've done this before and come back and had a good year,'' Edwards said. ``We just have to go to work from here and see what we can get done.  ``I don't think anybody is going to go through the season undefeated in the WAC. They rarely ever do.''

Miller has separated throwing shoulder
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/AllByDate/F5CAAB52351CBB3F8725669400560A35?OpenDocument

"Quarterback Drew Miller played most of the second half of BYU's 31-21 loss at Fresno State Saturday with a partially separated throwing shoulder.  "Drew has a Grade 1 A/C separation and a deltoid sprain," said Dr. Kirt Kimball, one of BYU's team physicians, "both of which hurt but neither of which are threatening for very long.  "He's already on an aggressive treatment program. He'll be on a day-to-day basis. It's not unreasonable to think he'd be ready to play this week."

"I had no idea he was hurt until I got into the locker room after the game," said offensive coordinator Norm Chow, who was in the press box during the game. "I made the change and, honest to goodness, it was just to make a change."

BYU players turn up noses at possible names for league
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/E65FAAD06C0E954087256695004F42F5?OpenDocument

"If the schools which broke away from the WAC choose to name their new league the "Mountain West Conference," they'll do it with little support from BYU's football players.  In a non-scientific poll conducted by The Daily Herald, only 28 percent of the Cougars questioned liked the name, which has been recommended to the eight school presidents by a transition team.  "None of them really jump out at me as being great," defensive end Byron Frisch said."

Womens Volleyball Coach Michaelis notches 1,000th win — at least
The Deseret News

"For the record, Elaine Michaelis' 1,000th-match milestone occurred on a Monday evening, in front of a sparse crowd of 597 fans, amid little fanfare, against a mediocre Idaho State team.  She wouldn't have had it any other way.  That's because the BYU women's volleyball coaching legend knows that in reality, she was involved in her 1,000th game long ago.

Michaelis started her coaching career in the Dark Ages of BYU women's sports record-keeping.  That was 1961, just a year after she graduated from BYU, and she hasn't missed a game since. No one bothered tracking wins and losses until 1969, which is why she didn't regard Monday's event as a big deal.  "It's kind of hard for me to get excited about it," said Michaelis, clutching a bouquet of flowers presented to her by her team after the Cougars downed the Bengals, 15-1, 15-10, 11-15, 15-2 at the Smith Fieldhouse. "It already happened years ago. We just don't know when."

Reading's Overtime Goal Lifts BYU in Womens Soccer
Daily Universe
http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=6230

"Sara Reading netted the winning goal in sudden death overtime, giving BYU's women's soccer team an upset victory over ninth ranked Stanford in Palo Alto last night.  The No. 25 Cougars won the game 3-2 when sophomore midfielder Reading scored off an assist from junior forward Karen Robbins 14 minutes into overtime.

The win upped BYU's record to 9-2 on the season, with Stanford falling to 6-2-2."

"BYU, the defending NCAA women's cross country champion, blitzed rival Stanford in the Cardinal's invitational meet Saturday at Palo Alto, Calif.  The Cougars compiled 54 points to Stanford's 90. Utah State (191) was seventh among 19 teams.

The Cougars' Maggie Chan (17:03), Laura Heiner (17:07), Tara Rohatinsky (17:08) and Elizabeth Jackson (17:11) placed seventh, ninth, 10th and 11th.  Tara Haynes (17th) also counted for BYU in the 5K race.

The BYU men finished second to Stanford, 23-69. Utah State (146) was fifth and Southern Utah (209) seventh. BYU's Randon Richards was third, running the 8K in 24:40."

BYU lacrosse brushes off rust in scrimmage
BYU Newsnet
http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=6176

"The BYU men's lacrosse club team padded up, laced up and brushed out the cobwebs for its annual Blue and Black intrasquad scrimmage at Helaman Field Friday.  Most of last year's national championship runner-up team is returning and coach Jason Lamb is optimistic about the way things are going after just four weeks of practice.

"I'd be insane not to expect a little rust, but we're doing the right things mentally," Lamb said. " Overall, this is as good as we've looked this early in the season."

BYU continues to practice three times a week and will officially begin it's title hunt by hosting a 12-team tournament at Deseret Towers field Oct. 16-17. "

Men's soccer buffalos Colorado
BYU Newsnet

"You win some, you tie some. And sometimes, you do both.  Men's soccer cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes Friday night but barely escaped with a 2-2 tie Saturday in Ogden against the Weber State Wildcats."

Game Overview

BYU looks to recover from a WAC season opening loss to Fresno State, and should be able to do just that this Saturday, as they host winless UNLV.  Still up in the air for the Cougars is who will start at quarterback.  Regardless of who gets the nod, BYU's coaching staff has stated that they will simplify the offensive game plan this week, hoping to eliminate costly mental miscues that have come because of many players' lack of experience.  BYU coughed up six fumbles against Fresno State, and will look to take care of the ball better this week.

The Cougar defense has vowed to come out with more intensity than they did last week, which was perhaps their poorest showing of the season.  However, there were moments of greatness, such as holding the Bulldogs scoreless after they had 1st and goal at the one yard line.  Amazingly enough, the defense has had a similar heroic goal line stand in each of the past four games.

UNLV brings a team to Provo that ranks near the bottom nationally in most offensive and defensive categories.  They are the owners of a ten game losing streak, and are looking for their first ever WAC road victory, having lost their last 23 games on the road.  On the bright side, over the past three weeks, the Rebels have scored more points in each game than in the game before, and have held their opponents to fewer points than the previous week.  Senior Chad Reed will probably become the third Rebel to start at quarterback this year, after doing a good job in the fourth quarter of last week's Nevada, Reno game.  The team only completed seven passes last week, but exhibited a new-found running game, racking up 268 yards on the ground.

The Rebels have had some bright moments against BYU.  In 1981, they came into Provo and handed the 8th ranked Cougars a 45 - 41 homecoming loss, ending BYU's nation leading 17 game win streak.  They would love to see history repeat itself on Saturday.

Implications

BYU needs to come out of this game with a win if they are to be a WAC contender this season.  A win will also keep the Cougars undefeated at home on the year, and will help to re-establish confidence that was shaken last week in Fresno.

UNLV is battling for a win after opening their season with tough games against two Big 10 teams, as well as Colorado State, Air Force, and rival Nevada, Reno.

Players to Watch

BYU

Margin Hooks (WR) -- He had another good game against Fresno State, and seems to be getting more comfortable in the offense.

Rob Morris (LB) -- He leads the WAC in tackles for losses, with 10 on the year.

Special Teams -- Besides outstanding individual efforts from Aaron Roderick (punt returns), Mike Rigell (kick returns), and Owen Pochman (placekicking), the unit as a whole has performed well.  In the past four games, they have blocked three kicks, including last week's field goal attempt block by Brian Gray that was returned for a touchdown by Heshi
Robertson.

UNLV

Damon Williams (WR) -- He's the career reception leader in Rebel history, and has caught a pass in each of the past 39 games.

Duane "Toy Train" James (WR) -- This freshman sensation is the #4 punt returner in the nation, with a 19 yard average.  Last week against Nevada, Reno, he took one back 78 yards for a touchdown.

Talance Sawyer (DE) -- This pre-season First Team All-WAC selection has 8 tackles for a loss so far this year.

James Sunia (LB) -- He's only a freshman, but is a team captain, and leads UNLV with 59 tackles on the year, including 17 against Air Force.

Records to Watch

BYU holds the current NCAA record of 291 consecutive games without being shut out.

Injury Report

BYU

Drew Miller (QB) --  He suffered a slight shoulder separation and deltoid sprain in his throwing arm when he was slammed to the ground after releasing what turned out to be a 58 yard TD strike to Carlos Nuno in the Fresno State game.  It's probable that he'll be able to play this week.

Tevita Ofahengaue (TE) -- He missed the trip to Fresno State because of a bruised kidney and a hip pointer.

Will Snowden (RB) -- He still hasn't found his way back onto the field since his hamstring pull against Alabama, but he is reportedly healthy.

Jimmy Richards (C) -- He reinjured the shoulder on his snapping arm last week, but should play.

UNLV

James Wofford (RB) -- He suffered a sprained foot and big toe in last week's game, and will probably not play against the Y.

BYU's Press Release for UNLV Game
http://www.byucougars.com/football/releases/100598.html

"UNLV is BYU’s Homecoming guest this week in a WAC Divisional crossover game. In 1996, when the Rebels last visited Provo, they were the Cougars’ Homecoming opponent as well.  Both teams are looking upwards in the WAC standings, the Rebels are 0-2 (Mountain), while the Cougars are 0-1 (Pacific)."

UNLV's Press Release for BYU Game
http://www.fansonly.com/cgi-bin/cframe.cgi?/unlv/sports/m-footbl/unlv-m-footbl-body.html

"UNLV (0-5, 0-2) heads back to the road for the fourth time in six weeks with a game at BYU (2-3, 0-1) and continues to look for its first-ever WAC road victory ... The Rebels will attempt to snap a 10-game overall losing streak, which includes the final five games of 1997 ... UNLV comes off a 31-20 loss to in-state rival Nevada, Reno while BYU lost 31-21 at Fresno State ... The Rebels head to Provo with two new faces in the two-deep. Former third-string QB Chad Reed is listed No. 1 heading into practice after an effective fourth-quarter relief job vs. UNR while former No. 3 RB Dahrin Footman will get the call after coming off the bench to post a career-best 154-yard night vs. the Wolf Pack."

Edwards Puts QB Position Up for Grabs
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10071998/sports/55802.htm

"The starting quarterback job at BYU is up for grabs again.  In the wake of an embarrassing loss at Fresno State, Coach LaVell Edwards said Tuesday he won't decide until later this week whether junior Kevin Feterik or sophomore Drew Miller will start against UNLV on Saturday.  Both played in the Cougars' 31-21 loss to the Bulldogs, and neither was particularly impressive. Feterik was 9-of-12 but for only 78 yards, while Miller was just 6-of-15 but gained 141 yards and threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Carlos Nuno."

2-quarterback system seems to be a growing national trend
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/yv0kev37.htm

"In shuffling between Kevin Feterik and Drew Miller the past two weeks, BYU became part of a growing trend in college football — rotating quarterbacks.  Top-ranked Ohio State did it for two seasons. As have a handful of other programs, at one point, including national powers Arizona, Florida and Penn State."

"It seems to me like more and more coaches around the country — Steve Spurrier, Joe Paterno, LaVell Edwards, some of the best in college football — are starting to use two quarterbacks," Buckeyes coach John Cooper told USA Today. "They're just trying to win football games. If that helps you win, you play them. If that doesn't help you win, you don't."

Y Football Notes
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/yu0irfdn.htm

"In an effort to jumpstart an offense that ranks 11th in the WAC and 83rd nationally, BYU coaches are simplifying their offense.  Wide receiver Margin Hooks said the alterations will allow athletes to be athletes and do individual things to help the team out.

"We understand the system, but I think it'll be simplified so it will be easier for us to be on one page. We'll automatically know what we're going to do," Hooks said. "We won't have to read and say, 'Well, if they're in this defense we're going to do this. If they're in that defense they're going to do that.' So, it will be real simplified. Pretty much A-B-C football."

------

After BYU's road game at Washington, several of Junior Mahe's teammates approached sports information director Bryan Dangerfield about a problem. The public address announcer at Husky Stadium, as well as countless other media, have continually mispronounced the soft-spoken freshman's name — and in the process embarrassed the former Brighton High star.  In the Tongan language, "Maw-hee" means underwear. The correct pronunciation of Mahe is "Mah-HAY."

Ofahengaue back in practice
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/4AB6841168DCAABD87256697004B88C4?OpenDocument

That guy with the long name is back.  BYU tight end Tevita Ofahengaue, who bruised a kidney in the Murray State game and stayed home from last week's road trip to Fresno State, returned to the practice field this week.  While his teammates on offense were suffering through first-half turnovers last Saturday, Ofahengaue was home in Provo, driving around town, trying not to go crazy.  "I didn't watch the game until the third quarter," Ofahengaue said. "My wife updated me there were four fumbles. I said, 'What? There is no way.' "

Rebels Look to 3rd String QB
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10091998/sports/56088.htm

"If the BYU Cougars think they have problems, they should chat up the UNLV Rebels before Saturday's game at Cougar Stadium.  The Rebels would probably trade their uniforms, scholarships and own sisters for even one of the Cougars' two victories.  ``We work hard and continue to fight,'' said Coach Jeff Horton, ``but we don't have anything to show for it.''

Not since last year, as a matter of fact. The Rebels are 0-5 and are riding a 10-game losing streak that dates to a 21-19 victory over TCU last Oct. 11.  They have lost 23 straight on the road. They are among the six worst teams in the nation on offense and defense, and, like the Cougars, they have quarterback problems."

It's Miller, Miller, Miller time when BYU Golf tees off
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/yw0jrgfg.htm

"A modern version of "My Three Sons" is a feature presentation on the BYU campus this fall, where Scott, Andy and Todd Miller are starring for the Cougar golf team.  That's right, Scott, Andy and Todd are all sons of Johnny Miller, who helped bring national fame to the school in the late 1960s before going onto greatness on the PGA Tour.  Now his three sons are key components of a deep Cougar team that may be the school's first legitimate NCAA championship contender in more than a decade."

Women's soccer 'happy with end results'
BYU NewsNet
http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=6313

"Surviving brutal play and questionable officiating, the BYU women's soccer team got two goals from junior forward Maren Hendershot and pulled out its 10th win of the season Thursday, defeating the University of Utah 2-1 in Salt Lake City.

"It was a pretty physical game, and we didn't get much help from the referees," Hendershot said of both teams' WAC opener. "It wasn't the greatest game we've ever played but we managed to pull it out."

Rugby tradition held strong in family ties
BYU NewsNet
http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=6305

"For years, the BYU rugby team has developed a tradition that can only be matched by a few other rugby clubs in the nation.  The tradition itself is upheld by players who feel a part of this tradition and are in the process of keeping it alive and strong.  Part of this tradition has been a few families that have had multiple brothers play for the team. Two of those families currently have members on the team.

Mark Maughan is a freshman hooker for the BYU rugby team.  His older brother Peter played for the team two years ago.  Another brother, Dave, is currently on the team with him."

Recap
http://football.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news/ap/981010/ap-unlv-byu.html

"Kevin Feterik threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns and Junior Mahe ran for two scores as Brigham Young trounced UNLV 38-14 on Saturday.  Feterik also may have won the Cougars' quarterback derby by default after Drew Miller left the game with a separated shoulder. Feterik led the Cougars on three scoring drives in the second half that put the game away.

UNLV was almost completely unable to move the ball against the Cougars. Brigham Young (3-3, 1-1 Western Athletic Conference) held the Rebels (0-6, 0-2 WAC) to 13 yards of offense and one first down in the first three quarters.

BYU snapped a three-game WAC losing streak and remained undefeated at home this season. Margin Hooks' 83-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter was the Cougars' longest play from scrimmage this year.

Sam Brandon blocked a BYU punt with 2:20 to play in the first half and gave UNLV the ball at the Brigham Young 6. James Wofford scored on the next play to cut BYU's lead to 14-7.

Seconds later, a bizarre sequence gave the Rebels the tying touchdown and sent the Cougar Stadium crowd of 61,774 into a momentary panic.

Miller fumbled when sacked by Greg Gales, but BYU lineman Matt Johnson caught the ball on the fly and, apparently thinking Miller had thrown a pass and the play was dead, made no move to advance it or even down the ball.

Defensive lineman Justin Conway, who seemed to be the only player on the field who realized the ball was still live, swatted the ball out of Johnson's hands, picked it up and ran 24 yards for the game-tying score."

Young Leads 49ers Over Saints
http://football.yahoo.com/nfl/recaps/981011/sfonor.html

"Steve Young matched an NFL record with his fifth consecutive 300-yard game and added three touchdown passes for the fifth straight game as the 49ers (4-1) had a tougher time overcoming their own mistakes than the New Orleans Saints in a 31-0 laugher.

Young completed 21-of-40 passes for 309 yards, matching the NFL record set by former teammate Joe Montana in 1982. In the process, he became the 20th quarterback in league history to throw for 30,000 yards when he hooked up with Terrell Owens on a 27-yard completion in the second quarter.

"Records are great, but I think it is about performing and keeping steady throughout the year," said Young. "We have a standard and we want to keep it. It seems kind of trite, but that is the key and I feel good about that."

The seemingly ageless Young, who celebrated his 37th birthday today, had scoring passes to Owens, tight end Greg Clark and running back Garrison Hearst as he shredded the overmatched Saints defense much like he did his first four opponents."

Moe Elewonibi and Steve Sarkisian battle in CFL
http://www.cfl.ca/CFL98Games/oct9_bc_sas_sum.html

"Damon Allen threw a pair of second-half touchdown passes and Juan Johnson rushed for 153 yards as the B.C. Lions defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders, 31-14, for their season-high third straight win.  Allen completed 12-of-22 passes for 136 yards and three scores for the Lions (6-9).  Allen found tackle Mo Elewonibi for a four-yard TD midway through the final period before Lui Passaglia kicked his third field goal, a 28-yarder that capped the scoring.

Steve Sarkisian was 15-for-23 for only 114 yards and a touchdown for Saskatchewan (5-10), who fell to 1-7 on the road.  His 10-yard scoring strike to Mike Saunders gave the Roughriders a short-lived 11-4 lead in the second quarter."

Ex-BYU Star Gant Up for Award
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10071998/sports/55801.htm

"Former BYU volleyball star Amy Steele Gant is among 10 finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.  The finalists will be honored Oct. 18 at Indianapolis.  The award is based on academics, athletics and community achievements. Gant was a two-time WAC player of the year and now plays for the U.S. National Team.  She will graduate from BYU in December. "

Defense Shows BYU Is a Cut Above Rebels
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10111998/sports/56430.htm

"Rob Morris was having a bad week.  He was tired, and he was stressed out.  ``I'm going to change something,'' he told himself.  So the day before the BYU Cougars played their homecoming game against the UNLV Rebels, Morris went out and shaved his head. Then, when he arrived at practice, teammate Chris Ellison ``got one of his vigilante, Black Panther ideas that the whole team should shave their head,'' Morris reported.

By Saturday, the whole defense was high and tight, and the Cougars put on one of the most dominating performances in their history. BYU allowed just five first downs and 98 total yards while beating the Rebels 38-14 at Cougar Stadium.  ``The best this year,'' said Morris.

``That's unity,'' explained Ellison. ``If we all want to shoot for being the No. 1 defense in the nation, we all have to be on the same page.''  ``We have to get the offense to do it, too,'' said Ellison."

Feterik's teammates praise his effort
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/yz0kkg9i.htm

"BYU racked up 499 yards of total offense as Feterik became the first Cougar quarterback in 13 games to eclipse 300 yards passing. There were, however, a few twists of fate along the way. Backup Drew Miller, who has been splitting time with Feterik as of late, made his usual entrance in the second quarter but was sidelined with a grade 2 shoulder separation before halftime rolled around. The bulk of the duties, therefore, were performed by Feterik — and he didn't disappoint.

Wide receiver Margin Hooks, who made five catches for 125 yards including an 83-yard touchdown strike from Feterik, said he needed only one word to describe the performance by the BYU starter.  "Excellent," Hooks said in crediting Feterik's heads-up play and correct reads.

Ben Horton, who joined Hooks for team-high honors with five receptions, agreed. He also ventured his opinion as to why.  "Kevin's a great quarterback. He hasn't been messing up," Horton said. "If we (the rest of the Cougars) do what we're supposed to do, he'll have 300 yards every game."

After reaggravating his slightly separated shoulder, Miller's status for next Saturday's game at Hawaii will remain unsettled until the team leaves for the islands.  "Obviously it doesn't feel good right now," Miller said. "We'll see how I feel come Wednesday."  Miller vows to do what he can to be ready to play. X-rays indicate that he suffered no serious damage to his right shoulder, though it'll likely remain sore for some time."

BYU spikers end Hawaii's win streak
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/yx1cfjta.htm

"Coming up with its biggest win of the year, the BYU women's volleyball team downed 10th-rated Hawaii in four games Saturday night to end the Rainbows' 53-game conference winning streak.  After dropping a tough first game 13-15, the Cougars came on strong, winning the next three contests against their new divisional foe, 15-4, 15-12, 15-8. With the win, the Cougars, who are playing in the Pacific Division for the first time this year, became the first conference team to defeat the Rainbows in a regular season conference match since 1994."

BYU's Press Release for Hawaii Game
http://www.byucougars.com/football/releases/101298.html

"BYU, sporting the 8th-ranked defense in the NCAA, will face it's second winless team in as many weeks when the Cougars face Hawai'i in Aloha Stadium. Although the Cougars have a five-game win streak and a 17-7 record versus Hawai'i, they are wary of the Aloha trance, all seven of the Rainbow wins have been on the island."

Hawaii's Press Release for BYU Game
http://uhathletics.hawaii.edu/

"The Rainbows and Cougars will meet for the last time as Western Athletic Conference members Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. With the break-up of the WAC, it may be the final meeting between the rival schools.  The Cougars have won the last five meetings and lead the series 17-7 and 10-7 in games played in Honolulu. The last time Hawai‘i beat BYU was in 1992 (36-32) at Aloha Stadium."

Think BYU's bad? Hawaii's offense is way, way worse
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/CE5DA3DF154E36EB8725669E004E9080?OpenDocument

"Cougar fans, if you've been less than pleased with BYU's offense this season, take a seat.  A back seat.  You can be grateful you don't have to watch the Rainbow Warriors at the University of Hawaii.

This year Hawaii is 0-5, has started five different offensive lineup combos and now has a true freshman at center.  The Rainbows have been shut out twice at home, by Arkansas State and SMU.  No scores, no points, nothing.  Hawaii ranks 112th in the NCAA in total offense. The 'Bows have ranked among the bottom 10 in offense the past three years."

Shoemaker is content without life of football
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/z20j36p4.htm

" If everything had gone according to plan, Paul Shoemaker would be sitting behind center this fall for the BYU football team instead of a desk.  He'd be studying game film of opposing defenses instead of a computer screen that charts the progress of the Dow. He'd be wearing shoulder pads instead of a crisp dark suit.  But Shoemaker, the eternal quarterback in waiting, is waiting no more. He is a financial planner for Merrill Lynch in downtown Salt Lake City.

"My playing days are over," he says, sitting at his desk. "I'm glad to be where I am now. I've moved on with my life."  "No, I don't miss it," he says. "I've seen what they're going through. I know what Feterik's going through. I don't miss that. He has to look over his shoulder. He's not playing as well as he could because of it. I think he's still a good quarterback. He probably feels the same way I did: One mistake and you're out. I don't miss having to perform every play and all the heat that goes with being a BYU quarterback."  He says this pleasantly, without a trace of bitterness, partly because he is relieved to have begun the next step of his life without facing the uncertain future that many former players face."

Expect emotion when Cougars, Rainbows meet for the 'last' time
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/z20ijn5b.htm

"When BYU and Hawaii square off Saturday night in Honolulu, it will mark the end of an era. Because of the imminent breakup of the Western Athletic Conference, the long-running BYU-Hawaii series is going the way of the old "Hawaii Five-O" television series: canceled indefinitely.  Every season but one since 1978, the Cougars and Rainbow Warriors have played.  During that span, BYU has made 14 trips to the islands.

But this week's game will be the 25th and perhaps final meeting between the two schools. As usual, expect plenty of intensity from Hawaii players and fans. In light of the WAC and the rivalry's swan song, it should be even more heated this time around.  "There will be a lot of emotion out there," Hawaii athletic director Hugh Yoshida told the Deseret News this week.  When eight schools announced in May they were bolting the WAC to create their own conference, leaving Hawaii behind, school president Kenneth Mortimer angrily denounced the split and vowed Hawaii would not play the schools departing the WAC ever again."

Y. 'backer predicts defense will improve
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/z10l3l6m.htm

"Years before teaming with 10 other starters to lift BYU's defense to a top 10 national ranking, outside linebacker Derik Stevenson was a successful solo act.  Just ask Keith Van Horn. Yes, that Keith Van Horn.  Following his senior year of football at Diamond Bar High in California, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Stevenson received a special invitation to join the school's basketball team. Never mind that he had no previous experience. The basketball coach was looking for a specialist, someone to rough up Van Horn — a "wimpy" but talented junior — in practice each day.

After three seasons as BYU's special teams kamikaze, Stevenson became one of three new defensive starters --- joining cornerbacks Brian Gray and Heshimu Robertson.  "I don't want to come out and make any stupid predictions or anything, but I think we're going to get better," he added. "I think we're going to move up because this is the type of defense where we're going to grow together. We're going to get better and better. Over the next few weeks, you can expect that to happen."

BYU Mens Basketball tabbed to finish 5th in Pacific
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/056823BC03FC7F168725669E004E8F74?OpenDocument

"If you believe the media (insert joke), Utah will win the Pacific Division and BYU will finish fifth.  Of course, few of the coaches who gathered here Wednesday for a preseason meeting with media believes what they read, including Ute coach Rick Majerus or Cougar coach Steve Cleveland.  "Considering they selected us to finish in last place a year ago and we finished sixth, I like it," Cleveland said. "It's pretty fair. I think it's unreasonable to think we're going to compete for one of the top three spots, not with Utah, New Mexico and Fresno State."

Reading between the lines, Cleveland's shooting for fourth, ahead of Hawaii, which lost 72 percent of its scoring to graduation.  San Diego State coach Fred Trenkle said it out loud.  "I pick BYU fourth myself," Trenkle said, "because of what they have back."

The Provo Daily Herald

"Mario Fatafehi, a 6-2 295-pound, junior college All-American at Snow College ahs verybally committed to BYU.  The Cougars' ninth-ranked defense will add the Honolulu (Farmington H.S.) native after he graduates from Snow this April, according to Snow College coach Keith Uperesa.  "It's a coup for BYU to get this committement this early," Uperesa said. "Because some of these schools want to continue to go after him and recruit him."

The earliest Fatefehi can sign is February.   He has been recruited heavily by Nebraska, Kansas State, Arizona State, Washington, Washington State and California, according to Uperesa.  Fatefehi is as good, if not better, than Junior Ione, a Snow College All-American lineman playing for Arizona State, Uperesa said.  Snow College is ranked fifth in the nation with a 5-0 record."

Game Overview

BYU had arguably their best game of the year last week against UNLV, and looks to continue that trend this Saturday against a struggling Hawai'i team.  The offense showed depth and continuity, and was led by the impressive play of Kevin Feterik after Drew Miller was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury.  Miller should return to share time with Feterik again this week, and the Cougars hope to continue their offensive proficiency with whoever's playing.  First and foremost on the minds of the team is to get their first road win since an overtime squeaker at SMU in September of last year.

Defensively, the Cougars are coming off of the third best performance in BYU history, holding UNLV to a mere 98 yards and 5 first downs, much of which came after the first unit was on the bench with the game safely out of reach.  Their dominating performance helped them to achieve the #8 ranking in the nation for total defense.  If they have a chance to hold an opponent scoreless this year, this is it.  The Rainbows come into the game ranked dead last (112 of 112) in the NCAA for scoring offense, managing a mere 8 points per game.

Hawai'i is the third winless team that the Cougars have faced in the past three weeks.  Their losing streak of 11 games began last year in Provo, when they succumbed 17 - 3 to a Paul Shoemaker - Drew Miller homecoming attack.  However, the Rainbows are always dangerous in Honolulu, and are known for breaking out for huge games against BYU in their home element.  In 1989 and 1990, the Rainbows thrashed beleaguered Cougar teams, winning 56 - 14 and 59 - 28, respectively.

The Hawai'i defense has played respectably throughout the year, especially considering the amount of time that they've spent on the field each game.  They're ranked 56th in the nation in total defense, allowing 356 yards per game.  As a unit, they're ranked 5th in WAC for 3rd down conversion defense.

Implications

BYU once again needs a win to stay in the race for the WAC Pacific Division championship.  Because of post-season implications, every game is a big one from here on out.  Obviously, as the very heavy favorites in this contest, BYU is expected to dominate the game, and anything short of a controlling win would reflect poorly on the team.

Hawai'i has always had intense feelings when it comes to playing BYU, partly because the Y always manages to sign many of the top athletes from the islands.  This is possibly the Rainbow's last chance to embarrass the Cougars in Honolulu.  In May, when BYU and seven other schools announced their plans to leave the WAC, the UH President vowed that they would never again play any of the departing programs.

Players to Watch

BYU

Kevin Feterik (QB) -- His 319 yards passing last week were the most by a BYU quarterback since he threw for 345 against Utah State on October 3, 1997.  He ranks 34th in the nation with a pass efficiency rating of 128.

Mike Rigell (WR) -- He continues to excel in his kick returning duties, and is coming into his own as a receiver, as well, with an exciting TD catch last week against UNLV.

Jason Walker (SS) -- With his interception against UNLV last week, he moved into the #1 spot in the nation for picks, grabbing .83 per game.

Hawai'i

Charles Tharp (RB) -- Even though he's only a sophomore, he ranks #13 in all-time rushing for the Rainbows.  He was named the WAC Pacific Division Freshman of the Year in '97, after leading Hawai'i in rushing and receiving.

Chad Shrout (P) -- Last year, he ranked in the top five punters in the nation all season, finishing with a 46.1 yard average.  He's currently ranked #4.

Quincy LeJay (DB) -- He ranks 33rd in the NCAA for interceptions.  He returned one for 49 yards at Utah, and another for 41 yards at San Diego State.

Records to Watch

BYU holds the current NCAA record of 292 consecutive games without being shut out.

LaVell Edwards, with 237 wins under his belt, is currently 8th in all-time NCAA victories.  His next win will tie him at 7th with Woody Hayes (Ohio State).

Injury Report

BYU

Drew Miller (QB) --  His right shoulder was injured again against UNLV, this time for a grade 2 separation.  He's feeling better, and will travel to Hawai'i, and will probably play.

Edwards hopes for ‘rematch’
Honolulu Star-Bulletin

"LaVell Edwards has this dream, and Hawaii is in it.  The veteran Brigham Young University head coach not only sees the Rainbows and Cougars playing football against each other again someday, he has visions of the two schools coming together in the same conference."

"With all the changes that are coming about in all the different conferences, who knows, we may be in the same league again," Edwards said last night after his team arrived by charter from Salt Lake City.  "It could definitely happen. I would also think at some point and time when all the hurt, disappointment and everything runs its course, we could get this series going again.  "We've always enjoyed coming over here -- some times more than others -- because you knew the crowd was going to be large and very vocal.  I enjoy playing road games in that type of atmosphere. It's better than some empty stadium where nobody cares."

Numbers add up to trouble for Rainbows
Honolulu Star-Bulletin
http://starbulletin.com/98/10/16/sports/story1.html

"Don Lindsey didn't spend his youth in Arkansas working on complicated math equations.  And that's too bad. Because the formula the Hawaii offensive coordinator will have to decipher tomorrow night at Aloha Stadium may be too complicated even for Einstein.  "Help me out," Lindsey said after yesterday's practice. "I'm not kidding. What would you do against a defense like BYU's?  "I was watching the film of their game with Washington and I got physically ill. They dominated them.  Washington couldn't do a thing.  They were lucky to win."

Hawaii may be fortunate to score. After all, the Rainbows are ranked last in the nation in scoring offense, producing a paltry eight points a game.  The Cougars also have an eight in their equation -- as in a No. 8 national ranking in total defense. They not only are stingy against the run, giving up 90.8 yards a game, but the front seven has the secondary coming up big, too."

Hawaii awaits Wong show
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/AllByDate/5A56592FA22715B2872566A0004AB3AE?OpenDocument

"They'll probably boo BYU offensive tackle Joe Hau'oli Wong.  When the former University of Hawaii lineman trots onto the turf at Aloha Stadium on Saturday, local Rainbow fans likely will give him the same business they tossed other natives of the Islands who came to BYU - guys like Micah Matsuzaki, Thor Salanoa, Mark Atuaia, and Kurt Gouveia.  Unlike the others, Wong is the only Cougar star to have actually played for the Rainbows - and then turn traitor.

Whatever the reception, though, Georgia Wong of nearby Waimanalo doesn't care. Her only son is home.  "Gee, who knows what Hawaii fans will do? If they boo him, that's their prerogative," she said. Wong is one of six BYU players from Hawaii. Others include Donny Atuaia, Stan Moleni, Tevita Ofahengaue, Hyrum Summers, and Hanale Vincent."

No debate: Jim McMahon was No. 1
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/z31655ah.htm

"Jim McMahon was the best quarterback ever to play for BYU, or for any other school for that matter.  Don't talk to me about Ty Detmer or Steve Young or any of the others. The best was McMahon, hands down.  McMahon set 70 NCAA records. NCAA statisticians called him the Babe Ruth of college football.  He set records for passing efficiency, yardage, total offense, touchdowns, you name it.  If McMahon had stayed healthy — if he hadn't repeatedly reinjured his throwing shoulder or hurt his knee early in his senior year, which forced him to wear a 30-pound brace — he would have set records never to be touched (if he had stayed healthy in the pros, maybe nobody would be talking about Joe Montana now)."

Christensen and Cooper return to a much-different Cougar basketball program
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/z319h452.htm

"When guards Todd Christensen and Nathan Cooper returned from LDS missions over the summer, they discovered a much different BYU basketball program than the one they left behind in 1996.  At that time, Roger Reid was the head coach and the Cougars were still considered one of the WAC's top teams. Both Christensen and Cooper, who made significant contributions as freshmen, helped BYU to a 15-win campaign in 1995-96.  Then came the next season, which saw the firing of Reid and the program sink into an abyss. While Christensen and Cooper were beginning the two best years of their lives, the Cougars were suffering through their worst year ever, finishing with a 1-25 record.

"I think I timed it just right, don't you?" Christensen joked. "I'm grateful I didn't have to go through it. I feel bad for the guys that did."  Earlier Friday, during Midnight Madness, Christensen and Cooper participated in their first official practice under coach Steve Cleveland, whom they hadn't heard of, let alone met, prior to their missions. And they couldn't be happier.  "The program needed a fresh start," Cooper said. "Coach Cleveland provides that."  "It's a new feeling of enthusiasm," Christensen said. "It's exciting."

'Breakaway 8' select commissioner
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/z30l3nw8.htm
Also see: http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10161998/sports/57247.htm

"The WAC's breakaway eight schools believe they have found the man that can help carry their new conference to national prominence.  Craig Thompson, who has served eight years as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, has been named commissioner of the soon-to-be-named league, ending a two-month search.  BYU president Merrill Bateman hailed the selection of Thompson as "a milestone that will let business of the new conference move forward at a much more rapid pace. We are truly on our way."

ESPN Notes on BYU Basketball
http://ESPN.SportsZone.com/ncb/features/00876668.html

"Silester Rivers hasn't participated in any of Brigham Young's workouts because of nagging leg injuries.  Meanwhile, junior center Bret Jepsen, fresh off a stint at Pete Newell's Big Man camp, is said to be playing the best basketball of his career. He's finally learned to catch the ball with one hand high before making his pivot moves in the post.  He tended to catch it with two hands and too low, giving the defense time to adjust. Freshman small forward Mark Bigelow has been the most impressive player and could become the Cougars' most skilled talent this season."

Recap
http://football.yahoo.com/ncaaf/recaps/981017/bbihhc.html

"Kevin Feterik threw a pair touchdown passes and Mike Rigell brought back a kickoff 96 yards for a score as Brigham Young rolled to a 31-9 victory over winelss Hawaii in a Western Athletic Conference matchup.  Feterik hit Rigell with a 13-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds left in the first half to give BYU (4-3, 2-1 WAC Pacific) a 17-3 and found Margin Hooks from 15 yards out in the third quarter for his other score.

Rigell gave the Cougars a 24-3 lead just 15 seconds into the third quarter with his electrifying kickoff return. Feterik made it 31-3 just under two minutes later when he found Hooks in the end zone.  Feterik was an efficient 20-of-26 for 212 yards as the Cougars won for the first time in four road tries this season.

Hawaii (0-6, 0-4) got its lone touchdown of the night with 4:47 to play on Derek Robinson's 23-yard scoring strike to Derek Zoller. Robinson completed 10-of-24 passes for 183 yards.  In dropping all four of its games at home, Hawaii has been limited to a total of 15 points."

  News Recap (10/21/98)

BYU's Press Release for San Jose St. Game
http://www.byucougars.com/football/releases/101998.html

"BYU, just back from a trip to Hawai'i, begins a three-game homestand with a lineup including San Jose State this weekend, San Diego State (Thurs., Oct. 29) and New Mexico (Nov. 7).  The Cougars are 3-0 at home this year and hope to keep that record spotless in their quest for a WAC title. San Diego State is atop the Pacific Division with a 3-0 record and in second place are four teams, BYU, San Jose State, Utah and UTEP. With Utah's win over Fresno State last weekend, the Cougars' fate is back in their own hands.  All of the above teams fill out BYU's remaining schedule.  The Spartans and Cougars meet for the first time since 1969."

San Jose St.'s Press Release for BYU Game
http://spartans.sjsu.edu/releases/fb.html

"San Jose State used Marcus Arroyo and Chris Kasteler at quarterback for the fifth straight game.  Arroyo started and was relieved by Kasteler in the first quarter. Kasteler went on to finish the UTEP game. In the first three games they have shared the quarterback job, Arroyo
played the first and third quarters and Kasteler, the second and fourth.

Wide receiver Oliver Newell has caught a touchdown pass in each of the last four games. The school record for touchdown receptions in consecutive games is six set by wide receiver Tim Kearse in the 1981 season. Newell leads the team in pass receptions with 25 for 367 yards and four touchdowns."

BYU Players Earn WAC Player of the Week Awards
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10201998/sports/57831.htm

"BYU kick returner Mike Rigell was named the WAC Pacific Division special teams player of the week.  A freshman from Tacoma, Wash., Rigell returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown in the Cougars' 31-9 victory at Hawaii. He also caught three passes for 67 yards and a touchdown.

BYU women's volleyball player Korie Rogers was named the WAC Pacific Division player of the week after posting 44 kills in wins over Utah State, San Jose State and Fresno State.

BYU women's soccer player Shauna Rohbock has been named the WAC Pacific Division player of the week. She had two game-winning goals last week and leads the team in scoring with 15 goals and six assists for 36 points."

Feterik's Grip On Starting QB Job Tightens
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10201998/sports/57844.htm

"Junior Kevin Feterik appears to have the BYU quarterback job all to himself again.  In the wake of Feterik's second consecutive strong performance during BYU's 31-9 victory at Hawaii on Saturday night, Coach LaVell Edwards said Monday that the Cougars ``are pretty well set now with Kevin.''  But the coach did allow himself room to change his mind.  Asked if his remark meant he no longer plans to alternate Feterik with backup Drew Miller -- who missed the Hawaii game with a separated shoulder -- Edwards said ``we'll still judge that from week-to-week . . . we'll just have to wait and see how the game goes.''

It's all in place for Cougs to land that trophy fish
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/57A565626BCFECE5872566A3004B9E53?OpenDocument

"The lure is tied, the rod is assembled.  The reel's wound, and the boat is out on WAC Lake.  Now, go fish.  In a three-game homestand and five-game conference stretch, LaVell Edwards will watch his team seize a Pacific Division title and trip to Las Vegas.  Or they'll fail and get skunked, just like 1997.  It's all there for the Cougars, thanks to Utah and Texas Christian, teams that defeated Fresno State - just like BYU players predicted.

FOLKS, THIS 19th WAC trophy for LaVell's case is there to be caught. "We're starting to click now," quarterback Kevin Feterik insisted after the Hawaii win.  "We were having fun out there, laughing in the huddle and taking care of business. We keep it going, we could run the table, but only if we stop making mistakes."

"Kevin Feterik and Mike Rigell provided the fireworks, but coach LaVell Edwards pointed to an easily overlooked play as a turning point in BYU's 31-9 victory over Hawaii Saturday night.  After the Cougs and 'Bows had traded field goals through the first quarter and half, BYU finally got untracked with a 14-play, 84-yard touchdown drive that changed the tenor of the game.  Edwards was quick to remember the effort which kept the drive moving.  "We hung in there...when it seemed like Hawaii had the ball the entire time," Edwards said. "A key was in the second quarter when Junior Mahe dove for close to a first down."

San Jose St.'s Kasteler gets 'permanent' nod at QB
San Jose Mercury

"Coach Dave Baldwin did the expected Monday and selected junior Chris Kasteler as the starting quarterback for San Jose State's Western Athletic Conference game Saturday at Brigham Young.

Kasteler will not only start, but will go all the way for the game and the season. Abandoned is the alternating quarterback plan Kasteler shared with true freshman Marcus Arroyo.  Arroyo took over as starter after senior Brian Vye guided the Spartans in the first two games, an upset over Stanford and an upset loss to Idaho."

No. 4 Womens Volleyball Host Another Top-10 Team
http://www.byucougars.com/volleyball_w/releases/102098.html

"With 12 straight victories to their credit and a 17-1 record, the Cougars are now considered
the No. 4 team in the nation according to college volleyball coaches (USA Today/AVCA Poll). This week the Cougars moved up from No. 5 to No. 4 after a 3-0 week on the road. Friday evening’s opponent, UC Santa Barbara, is ranked seventh after falling from the No. 4 spot because of a tough five-game loss to UCLA, now ranked 25th. Friday’s match with Santa Barbara marks the third top-10 school to play BYU in Provo this year (No. 1 Long Beach State, 1-3 loss; and No. 9 Hawai’i, 3-1 victory)."

Womens Soccer Prepares for Final Conference Games

"The BYU women's soccer team added two more conference wins on the road last weekend
and hosts its final two WAC games at home this weekend. Making appearances at South Field are UNLV on Thursday and 11th ranked San Diego State on Saturday. The Aztecs will be the highest team to play on South Field in the past four years. The number 13 ranking in this week's NSCAA poll is the highest ranking the women's soccer team has received in its four-year history."

Game Overview

BYU traveled to the islands last week to produce another convincing win, and in doing so, snapped a year-long road losing skid.  Now they return to Provo to defend their unbeaten home mark of 3-0, facing the upstart Spartans of San Jose State.  The offense is beginning to gel as the young skill players learn the system and their duties within it.  The passing game has been the biggest benefactor, as quarterbacks and receivers appear to be on the same page, and are making big plays.  The one area in which the Cougars desperately hope to improve is in that of turnovers.  On the year, the offense has coughed up 25 fumbles, losing 12.  The butterfingers syndrome has cost the Y dearly, as opponents have often capitalized on the drops, including returning three for touchdowns.

The Cougars boast the #9 defense in the country, allowing only 269 yards per game, including a stingy 89 on the ground.  Their one thin spot is their depth in the defensive backfield.  Rob Warcup and Doug Henstrom did a good job filling in for injured Brian Gray at Hawai'i, but "the Gray death's" return is anxiously anticipated.

San Jose State brings a balanced offensive attack to Provo.  At times, they have really clicked, such as when erstwhile BYU gunner Brian Vye led the team to a victory over Stanford, but the Spartans have sputtered occasionally as well, prompting Coach Dave Baldwin to start true freshman QB Marcus Arroyo and platoon him with junior Chris Kasteler.

SJSU's pass defense has been good this year, limiting opponents to 165 yards per game.  On the ground, however, teams have literally run over the Spartans, amassing an average of 256 yards per game, including Virginia's 446 yards.  The San Jose special teams have also been lackluster, doing a poor job on punt return defense.

Implications

BYU looks to remain undefeated at home for the season, and more importantly, to move up in the WAC rankings.  The Cougars, along with three other teams (Utah, SJSU, and UTEP) are tied for 2nd in the Pacific Division rankings at 2-1, behind 3-0 San Diego State.  Of note is that all of those teams remain on BYU's schedule.  Since Fresno State lost to the Utes last week, the Cougars control their own destiny, and can return to Las Vegas by winning the rest of their games.

San Jose State knows that the winner of this game will be one step closer to the WAC championship.  A victory in Provo over the Cougars would give them confidence that they could run the table and take the Pacific Division title.

Players to Watch

BYU

Kevin Feterik (QB) -- He had another impressive game last week, completing 20 of 26 passes.  He's thrown 68 straight passes without an interception.

Mike Rigell (WR) -- His 96 yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week in Honolulu put the game out of reach and vaulted him to the #4 spot in the national rankings.  He also continued to excel in his receiving duties, making another great touchdown catch.

Rob Morris (LB) -- He's proving to be the epitome of hard nosed defensive football.  He leads the Cougars on the year with 53 defensive points.

Junior Mahe (RB) -- His Barry Sanders-esque moves generate excitement and yards.  The talented freshman is currently averaging 5.9 yards per carry.

San Jose State

Oliver Newell (WR) -- He's only one touchdown reception shy of the SJSU career mark.  He's had a TD grab in each of the past four games.

Deonce Whitaker (RB) -- Averaging 5.9 yards per carry, he leads the Spartans in rushing touchdowns on the season.  He tallies an impressive 133 all-purpose yards per game.

Lyle West (FS) -- Last year he led the Spartan defense with 128 tackles, and has a team best 74 so far this season, including 17 against UTEP.

Alfonso Moran (LB) -- Just a sophomore, he's making his presence felt, averaging 12 tackles per game over the last month.

Records to Watch

BYU holds the current NCAA record of 293 consecutive games without being shut out.

LaVell Edwards can take sole possession of the #7 spot for career victories on Saturday.  He's currently tied with Woody Hayes (Ohio State) at 238.

Injury Report

BYU

Drew Miller (QB) --  He is reportedly healing well from the shoulder separation that he suffered at Fresno, and reinjured against UNLV.

Brian Gray (CB) -- He was kicked in the shin two weeks ago vs. UNLV, and sat out most of the Hawai'i game to rest his sore leg.

No splittin' image: Feterik back to full-time status
The Deseret News
http://desere= tnews.com/spt/z80ittn2.htm

"BYU's on-again, off-again quarterback controversy is once again o= n hiatus.  LaVell Edwards said junior Kevin Feterik, who has start= ed all seven games this season, will not split duties with backup Drew M= iller this Saturday when the Cougars play host to San Jose State.  The= quarterbacks had shared time for two games before Miller reaggravated a shoulder s= eparation against UNLV on Oct. 10. The sophomore did not return for the second = half, nor did he play in last Saturday's 31-9 victory at Hawaii. Though sor= e, Miller was dressed and ready to play against the Rainbow Warriors = =97 if needed. He wasn't.  Meanwhile, Feterik has completed 37 of 54 pa= sses for 531 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions since Miller'= s injury. His pass efficiency rose to second in the WAC at 134.89 as BY= U won back-to-back games for the first time this season."

Spartans must play their best to beat Cougars
The Deseret News
http://desere= tnews.com/spt/za0jbo8p.htm

"San Jose State coach Dave Baldwin has no illusions about Saturday= 's game at BYU. He's telling the Spartans it'll take their best effort o= f the season to leave Cougar Stadium victorious.  "BYU is a great = challenge for us. I think their strength is their defense," said Baldwin, who r= ates the Cougar defenders higher than any other of SJSU's previous opponen= ts.  And that's a list that includes nationally ranked Virginia and Oregon= . " They just rally to the ball.  They've stopped everybody they'v= e played."  Not good news for the Spartans, who'll make junior Chr= is Kasteler their third different starting quarterback this season. Form= er BYU passer Brian Vye led San Jose State past Stanford (35-24) in the = season opener, but hasn't played a single down since a subpar performance a = week later in a loss to Idaho (17-12)."

BYU, Spartans Nearly Sparked Race Riot in '68
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10211998/sports/58007.htm

"It doesn't seem like much of a rivalry, BYU vs. San Jose State, e= specially since the teams have not played in nearly 30 years. But there was a t= ime when the Cougars and Spartans nearly sparked a national incident with= their meeting on a football field.   The year was 1968, and the n= ational civil-rights movement was at its anxious peak.

The all-white Cougars widely were viewed as racist because of the = church's policy, and already had encountered an angry mob of protesters before= a game against Wyoming in Laramie. Then, when they went to San Jose for= the last game of a 2-8 season, they found a community on the verge of boi= ling over.  Seven black players on the Spartan team had vowed to boyc= ott the game against the Cougars in protest.  The school threatened = to revoke their scholarships, but that sparked the rest of SJSU's black = athletes -- including sprinter John Carlos, who had been disqualified from the= Mexico City Olympics for raising a gloved fist on the medal stand -- to prom= ise to quit and discourage other black athletes from attending.

Yet San Jose State officials were so concerned that they had wonde= red earlier in the week whether they should play the game at all, and eve= ntually decided to do so under heavy security.  ``There were rifled poli= cemen all around the top of the stadium,'' recalled Lyons, ``and guys set u= p with machine guns at the top of the press box.''  The game was p= layed without incident."

There Still Is No Bowl Guarantee For WAC's Football Champion
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10211998/sports/58005.htm

"The WAC has struck out in its latest attempt to land a guaranteed= bowl bid for its football champion.  The Independence Bowl has entere= d into a three-year agreement with the Big 12 and the Southeastern Conf= erence, spurning the WAC. WAC Commissioner Karl Benson says discussions with = the Liberty and Aloha bowls are continuing, but both have indicated a des= ire to retain their open slots.  The WAC has two guaranteed bowl bid= s this season: the Las Vegas Bowl and one of four spots in the Aloha Ch= ristmas Football Classic doubleheader. But neither is obligated to take the W= AC champion, which will be crowned Dec. 5 in Las Vegas. "

Rigell emerges just when offense needs him most

"Mike Rigell suddenly has become a BYU playmaker.  And for a = Cougar offense that's been looking for answers, this is manna from the cloud= s.  Heaven knows, there's been enough bombs from below so far this year -= things like fumbles, penalties and dropped passes.  With defenses shado= wing Ronney Jenkins and freshman Junior Mahe emerging with receivers Ben H= orton and Margin Hooks, the emergence of Rigell is welcome as the ghosts of= K.O.  Keahaluhi and Eric Drage.  Rigell came up huge in BYU's 31-9 win= over Hawaii Saturday night, and it wasn't just his falling-backward, leapi= ng touchdown catch, or that electrifying 96-yard kickoff return.  T= he redshirt freshman from Washington had a key catch and run on a hitch = play in the second quarter to extend an 84-yard, go-ahead scoring drive."

Cougs earn return from special teams investment

http://www.daily-herald= .com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/AllByDate/C7E3F194E1FB3435872566A6004C59F1?OpenDo= cument

"The returns are big.  Long known for its passing prowess, BY= U is quietly becoming a football program known for producing NCAA-leadi= ng punt and kickoff specialists.  The latest, redshirt freshman Mik= e Rigell, ranks No. 4 nationally in kickoff returns and is the WAC's mo= st dangerous man to boot a football to.  This comes on the heels of= 1997, when Jaron Dabney earned WAC Freshman of the Year honors after rankin= g among the nation's best kick and punt return specialists.  In 19= 96, the Cougars ranked 10th nationally in kickoff returns and James Dye f= inished third in returning punts with a 17.6-yard-per-return average."

The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald= .com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/AllByDate/7135CD3A8BBC94D8872566A4004E2EB3?OpenDo= cument

"There aren't many pass defenses out there that can match BYU's.&n= bsp; San Jose State has one of them.  Both teams will try to throw th= e ball Saturday when they meet in Cougar Stadium at noon.  Spartan= s coach Dave Baldwin is well aware of what BYU, which is ranked 13th in= the country with a pass efficiency defense rating of 96.4, can do.  = "I think their strength is their defense," he said. "They're as good as = we've seen, and that includes Virginia. They rally to the ball. They've sto= pped everybody they've played.  "Perhaps their inside linebacker, Rob= Morris, is the best player we've seen, including Virginia's All-American safe= ty. Rob Morris is a playmaker. He is all over the football field for them= ."

Baldwin has his own quartet of playmakers in an all-senior Spartan= secondary. Despite facing Oregon, which has the nation's second-rated passer in = Akili Smith, Virginia, Stanford and New Mexico, with Graham Leigh, San Jose= State's pass defense isn't far behind BYU's: No. 27 with a 106.3 rating."

The Provo Daily Herald

"Riding a 12-match winning streak, The fourth-ranked BYU women's v= olleyball squad will play host to yet another top-10 team today at Smith Fieldh= ouse.  The Lady Cougs (17-1) will open the day with a 2 p.m. battle against = WAC foe UTEP, then will face No. 7 UC-Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.  UCSB = was ranked fourth last week before a loss to UCLA dropped it to seventh."

"Ronney Jenkins rushed for 250 yards and tied a school record with five touchdowns as Brigham Young defeated San Jose State, 46-43, in a Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division shootout.

"His nine-yard TD jaunt with just over five minutes left to play capped the scoring for BYU (5-3, 3-1) and tied the school mark set by Eric Lane, who scored five TDs against Utah State on October 13th, 1979.

"Chris Kasteler had a stellar day for San Jose State (3-5, 2-2), completing 22-of-32 passes for 319 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. His five-yard scoring strike to Carlos Meeks with 7:07 remaining pulled the Spartans within three points, but the Cougars held on for their fourth straight victory in the series."

Game Overview

BYU plays host to San Diego State in a classic ESPN matchup.  These two teams have produced some exciting games over the years, and this one could prove to be as important as any.  The Cougs got a major boost in the rushing department last week, piling up 332 yards on the ground, including an outstanding 250 from Ronney Jenkins' 31 totes.  His
performance will surely boost his confidence, as well as that of the entire team.  That confidence couldn't come at a better time, as the Cougars prepare for what could be termed an unofficial division championship.

Once again, the Cougars have upped their ranking in rush defense, climbing to #6 in the nation.  Their run stuffing prowess will be put to the test against San Diego State's powerful ground game.  Another aspect of the game that could prove to be important on Thursday night is BYU's ability to eliminate turnovers from their game.  Atypical of most BYU-SDSU games, this could be a hard nosed, low scoring affair, and it will be important to make every possession count.

San Diego State brings a tandem of punishing running backs to Provo in Larry Ned and Jonas Lewis.  Quarterback Brian Russell can also turn and run upfield if given the chance.  In fact, other than their season opener against Wisconsin, in each game this season the Aztecs have rushed for more yards than they have passed.  Russell has started this year in place of an injured Spencer Brinton, and has shown steady improvement, playing his last three games without throwing an interception.

San Diego State's defense isn't the most intimidating that the Cougars will face this year, allowing opponents to convert 41% of their 3rd down attempts.  However, they have come up big at important times throughout the season, and have helped the Aztecs to an undefeated conference mark.  Their only three losses were to teams that post a collective record of 20 - 4 (Wisconsin, Arizona, and USC).  The special teams unit has proven to be dangerous, and scored all 14 of SDSU's points in regulation against Utah last week.

Implications

BYU faces a must-win situation as they go up against the division leading Aztecs.  For all intents and purposes, any loss from here on out would negate the Cougars' chances of winning the conference, and you can bet that they know it.  The team is also putting their unblemished home record on the line in front of a national audience.

San Diego State will be trying to go 5-0 in WAC play for the first time in their 21 years in the conference.  This is definitely the last major test on their schedule, and if they're able to pull off a win, they will have all but locked in the right to represent the Pacific Division in the WAC championship on December 5th.

Players to Watch

BYU

#7, Kevin Feterik (QB) -- Last Saturday marked his third consecutive 200+ yard game.  On the season, he's 108 of 182 for 1512 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions.  He's currently ranked 21st in the NCAA with a pass efficiency rating of 139.2.

#16, Ronney Jenkins (RB) -- Last week vs. San Jose State, he racked up the second highest single game rushing total in BYU history with 250 yards, falling just 22 yards short of the mark that Eldon Fortie set in 1962.  He is the 26th ranked rusher in the NCAA.

#44, Rob Morris (LB) -- He anchors one of the top defenses in the nation, and leads the team in tackles (80) and sacks (5).

#70, Joe Wong (OT) -- He was a crowd pleaser last week with a pancake block on a SJSU defensive player, as well as a diving, touchdown saving tackle after an interception.

San Diego State

#1, Damon Gourdine (WR) -- Not only is he the best Aztec receiver, but he averages 23 yards per kickoff return, and is the #1 punt returner in the nation.  His 95 yard punt return against Utah last week was the longest in school history.  He has also caught the game winning TD passes in overtime the past two weeks.

#4, Larry Ned (RB) -- Just a sophomore, he's the #3 rusher in the WAC, averaging 104 yards per game.  Before his 97 yard outing last week, he had posted 100+ yards in four consecutive games.

#29, Eric Lewis (CB) -- Last week he became the all time SDSU pass break-up leader with 35 during his career.

#32, Jonas Lewis (RB) -- He's the tenth ranked career rusher for the Aztecs, needing only forty more yards to make the number nine spot.  He's gaining nearly six yards per rush this season.

#93, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (DE) -- This aggressive junior is 3rd on SDSU's career sack list with 20.  He earned WAC Pacific Division player of the week honors last week with nine tackles, two sacks, and a broken up pass.

Records to Watch

BYU holds the current NCAA record of 294 consecutive games without being shut out.

Owen Pochman needs to nail 6 more extra points to break his brother Ethan's record of 61 consecutive PATs made.

Ronney Jenkins needs 14 yards to surpass Peter Tuipulotu (1528 yards, 1987-1991) for the #10 spot in the BYU career rushing standings.

Ronney Jenkins needs 76 yards to surpass Lakei Heimuli (857 yards, 1985) for the #10 spot in the BYU single season rushing standings.

  News Recap (10/28/98)
BYU's Press Release for SDSU Game
http://www.byucougars.com/football/releases/102698.html

"If you are a network programmer, it's a no-brainer ... produce a game that guarantees points on the board and you've got an audience.  The Aztecs and Cougars haven't disappointed yet with 1,027 points (60.4 points per game) rung up on the board in the last 17 games.  In fact the 52-52 tie in 1991 stands as an NCAA record for the highest scoring tie game.  What makes this matchup even sweeter is the fact that San Diego State is 4-0 and in first place in the WAC Pacific Division and BYU is right behind with a 3-1 mark. BYU is 4-0 at home this season and is on a three-game winning streak. San Diego State lost their first three non-conference games, but has a four-game streak of their own including back-to-back overtime wins (36-33 over New Mexico and 21-20 over Utah)."

San Diego State's Press Release for BYU Game
http://www.fansonly.com/schools//sdsu/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/102698aaa.html

"The San Diego State University football team heads to Provo, Utah to face Brigham Young University on Thursday, October 29 at 6:05 p.m. (MST).  The last time San Diego State opened WAC play 4-0 was in 1993. The Aztecs lost the next week to Utah in Salt Lake City, 45-41. SDSU has never begun the WAC season 5-0 since it entered the conference in 1978.  This will be the sixth straight time that the SDSU and BYU game has been on ESPN, with four of the six meetings being Thursday night matchups."

BYU gets verbal commitment from Washington quarterback
The Provo Daily Herald

"Matt Berry, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound quarterback from Eastlake High in Redmond, Wash., has verbally committed to play at BYU.  Bobby Burton, a national recruiting analyst, has ranked Berry among the top five prep quarterbacks in the West.  "I wanted to get it out of the way now, so I can concentrate on the rest of my season," Berry said in a telephone interview.  Berry called BYU coaches last Friday with the news, but didn't make his decision public until Monday.  Berry will graduate early, allowing him to enroll at BYU for the winter block semester (February, 1999) and participate in spring practice."

Feterik's Goal: No Boos at Cougar Stadium
** Highly Recommended**
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10271998/sports/58891.htm

"One of Kevin Feterik's darkest moments came on a bright Saturday afternoon, a month ago, playing against a Division I-AA opponent -- Arthur Murray's School of Dance, wasn't it? -- when thousands of angry fans at Cougar Stadium came to see the weakling's blood spilt, but, instead, witnessed their own inept offense.  So, they turned, devouring their own, lustily booing their quarterback as though he were some kind of disposable human debris, completely unworthy of piloting the mothership. The BYU QB wannabe staggered along the sideline in a depressed, confused stupor, mumbling to himself, asking himself unaskable questions.
    He had been sacked.
    He had missed open receivers.
He had thrown an interception. (``It was called back on a penalty,'' Feterik says. ``Thank God.'')
He had made Murray State look like Florida State.
He had been replaced by his backup.
He had heard the cheers, daggers in his back, as Drew Miller entered.
    ``I stood there thinking, asking myself, `Do I suck?' . . . `How bad do I suck?' . . . `Can I do this?' . . . `Am I good enough?' . . . `Am I the worst quarterback ever to play here?' '' Feterik says. ``I was in a daze. I was filled with self-doubt. It was terrible.''

League name finally official: Mountain West Conference

"With all the fanfare of the sun setting in the west, the nation's newest Division I athletic league has finally settled on a name: Mountain West Conference.  Presidents from the eight schools departing the WAC — BYU, Utah, Air Force, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV and Wyoming — made the official announcement Monday.  "The Mountain West Conference name . . . brings to mind the geographic setting of our conference," said CSU president Albert C. Yates, the president and treasurer of the new conference, which begins operations July 1, 1999."

BYU Players Honored as WAC Players of the Week
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/10271998/sports/58897.htm

"BYU running back Ronney Jenkins was named the WAC Pacific Division player of the week after rushing for 250 yards against San Jose State, the second-highest total in school history.

BYU's Korie Rogers is the WAC player of the week. She recorded 28 kills, 38 digs and 10 blocks in sweeps of UTEP, UC Santa Barbara and New Mexico."

Trip to BYU next for SDSU, 1-10 in Provo
San Diego Union Tribune
http://www.uniontrib.com/sports/aztecs/981026-0010_1s26azfoot.html

"It is one of the great home-field advantages in college football, a 65,000-seat stadium packed each week, a picturesque setting nestled on the western base of the Wasatch Mountains and 5,000 feet above sea level.  It has been the sight of numerous upsets, of the mighty such as Notre Dame and UCLA and Penn State going home on the short end.

The view is tough to beat.  The home team is even tougher.

San Diego State's football team (4-3 overall, 4-0 WAC) takes its four-game win streak and first-place standing in the Pacific Division to BYU on Thursday night at 5 (PST) on ESPN. There are many things that make BYU (5-3, 3-1) tough to beat in Cougar Stadium, none more important than the fact the team is annually very good."

BYU's Frisch happy to get ready for the Aztecs on short notice
San Diego Union Tribune
http://www.uniontrib.com/sports/aztecs/981027-0010_1s27aztecsub.html

"BYU's football team never practices on Sunday.  Not even during a shortened work week such as this one, when the Cougars must turn around from Saturday's win over San Jose State and play San Diego State on Thursday night for the lead in the WAC Pacific Division.  "It's one of the benefits of going to BYU," said Byron Frisch, the Cougars' junior defensive end from Bonita Vista High.  Frisch was referring to the practice of observing Sunday as a day of rest at the Mormon school."

"I always think I had a horrible game, especially if we lose or if I didn't have a lot of tackles or maybe only one tackle for a loss," said the 6-foot-5, 270-pound Frisch. "But then I look at the film on Monday and I lighten up.  I see I didn't play that bad. I realize I did about all I could do in the game."

Aztecs-Cougs -- Rivalry Is Made for TV
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/10281998/sports/59009.htm

"An illustration of the best reason for cutting the Fat WAC in half will be played -- resumed -- Thursday night in Provo. The game, the series disguised as a heart attack. A game that holds the NCAA records for most points scored (104) in a tie, and most conniptions caused to and suffered by those watching.  A rivalry that nearly short-circuited the scoreboard at the old Jack Murphy Stadium. And, year after year, left fans of both teams slack-jawed and bug-eyed in absolute disbelief. Nobody could stop the scoring . . . Until the WAC, in its expanded form, did exactly that.

Taken in its totality, scoring in the series is ridiculous. Over the last 17 games, the teams have run up 1,027 points. That's an average of more than 60 points a pop.  ``It's been fun, good for both teams,'' says Edwards."

Basketball prepare for early season test
BYU Newsnet
http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=7538

"After a flashy debut at Midnight Madness, the BYU men's basketball team started sweating on the hardwood as practice officially opened Oct. 17.  And by the looks of it, the Cougars are plenty busy.   Head coach Steve Cleveland said the team's main emphasis during the pre-season is to gain a better understanding of the motion offense.  A system based on reading defenses rather than set plays, the motion offense requires time to implement."

Women's volleyball runs streak to 15
BYU Newsnet
http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=7508

"The BYU women's volleyball team was victorious in all three matches Friday and Saturday -- proving its status as a top-four team.  After beating WAC opponent UTEP, 15-2, 15-0 and 15-9, in an afternoon scrimmage Friday, the Cougars swept past seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara later that same night, winning 15-10, 15-6 and 15-3.

The University of New Mexico met the same fate on Saturday night. BYU won its 15th match in a row, shutting out the Lobos in three-straight games."

Recap

"Cornerback Brian Gray returned an interception for a touchdown and helped Brigham Young record its first shutout in two years, a rain-soaked 13-0 victory over Western Athletic Conference foe San Diego State.

"Gray picked off Brian Russell's second pass of the game and raced 39 yards to the end zone, breaking a scoreless tie just 89 seconds into the contest. It was the second interception of the season for Gray, who also deflected Russell's pass to Damon Gourdine in the end zone on 4th-and-goal with nine minutes to play.

"Owen Pochman booted field goals of 45 and 40 yards in the first half for the Cougars (6-3, 4-1 WAC Pacific), improving to 12-for-12 this season on kicks of 45 yards or less.

"That was all the scoring BYU's defense needed. The unit limited San Diego State (4-4, 4-1) to just 122 total yards, including 44 in the first half. BYU posted its first shutout since a 49-0 pasting of Rice on November 9th, 1996."

Y.'s Gray Knows Old Teammate -- Aztecs' Gourdine -- Too Well
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10301998/sports/59286.htm

"BYU's Brian Gray played junior-college football with Damon Gourdine, so he knew he could shut down the San Diego State Aztecs' leading receiver.  He did better than that.  Gray not only held the Gourdine to one reception for 7 yards in BYU's 13-0 victory over the Aztecs on Thursday night at Cougar Stadium, he stepped in front of him for his second interception of the season and returned it 39 yards for the game's only touchdown. Later, he batted away a pass from Gourdine in the end zone on fourth-and-goal. "

``He always gives a move that's the opposite move of the one he's going to make,'' said Gray.  ``If he makes an outside move, he's going to go inside.  If he makes an inside move, he's going to go outside.''

McMahon Returns, But Takes Offense to BYU's Offense
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/oct/10301998/sports/59311.htm

"Jim McMahon returned to his college field of dreams Thursday night, to the place where he claims the greatest offense in all of football was perfected, and immediately began venting on the school's new scheme -- running. ``What are we trying to be -- another Oklahoma?"

Nothing during BYU's 13-0 win reminded him of the good old days.  Slogging through the rain in the second half didn't help much, but 51 passing yards in the first half and 120 for the game left him ``shocked.'' He remembers beating the Aztecs by a combined 62-18 in 1980-81. ``They throw eight times a half now.  We used to throw that many in one possession. And Bosco is their quarterback coach. What's going on man?'' Show me some TD passes he was pleading.  Bring back light-up-the-scoreboard days."

New boss outlines future of Mtn. West

"Craig Thompson finally slowed down and took in the panoramic, press box-window view at Cougar Stadium during BYU's 13-0 victory over San Diego State Thursday night. As he gazed down at the Cougars and Aztecs in action below, he smiled.   "I'm thrilled to be back involved in college football," he said. Involved is putting it mildly. Immersed is more like it.

Though he doesn't officially take over the commissioner's post until Jan. 1, 1999, he's already hip-deep in Mountain West business.  Thompson spent several days this week in Salt Lake in negotiations with officials from ESPN, Fox and the Blue and White Network.  He also hobnobbed with representatives from the Las Vegas, Liberty and Holiday Bowls during the BYU-SDSU game.  "This is a league that will have at least three bowl eligible teams a year. We need to try to find a home for folks," he said."

BYU makes peace with McMahon
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/zh0kioct.htm

"Jim McMahon wasn't hard to find, Thursday night at Cougar Stadium. He was the guy with the ear ring and the full-length leather coat. The guy with the attitude. The guy walking around like he owned the place — which in a certain sense, he does.  He is, after all, the man who really got this quarterback thing rolling at BYU.  The fact that McMahon was back in town was news enough. He hasn't made a habit of returning.  Until recently, he's made it a point to visit Provo as often as John Glenn visits space.

"It's just that, for McMahon, there were other places to be.  The former BYU all-America quarterback met his wife at BYU, and played his football there. Otherwise, 17 years after leaving school by special invitation, he hasn't had a lot of reasons to come back. He loved the football, but the rest was torture.

"But on Thursday, McMahon was relaxed and happy. The honor code people weren't anywhere to be seen and McMahon didn't bring any beer.  A peace accord had been reached.  The scoreboard declared, "Welcome back, Jim McMahon, and congratulations on being inducted into the College Hall of Fame." His game-winning pass in the 1980 Holiday Bowl was replayed on the big screen. The crowd roared like it was fresh news."

Women's Volleyball runs winning streak to 16 with victory over Utes
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/zh1clng3.htm

"After fourth-ranked BYU extended its win streak to 16 matches and 21 games with a 15-6, 15-4, 15-9 victory in the Smith Fieldhouse Friday, Utah coach Beth Launiere heaped additional praise on this year's Cougars.  "I think this is the best team they've ever had in the nine years I've been here," she said.  A bold statement considering BYU has reached the NCAA's Elite Eight four of the past six seasons, including a Final Four appearance in 1993.  At 21-1 overall and 8-0 in WAC play, veteran Cougar coach Elaine Michaelis didn't totally dispute the charge.  "It has to rank among the top," Michaelis said. "It really does. I think we have more balance."

BYU Women's soccer blanks No. 19 Michigan
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/E3AB4FD5D6C49056872566AE00432D97?OpenDocument

"Shutting out a nationally ranked opponent, the BYU women's soccer team breezed into its last road trip of the year by defeating the number 19 Michigan Wolverines 2-0 Friday in Ann Arbor.  The 20th-ranked Cougars' win improves their record to 15-3-0 on the season."
