  News Recap (11/3/98)

New Mexico's Press Release for BYU Game
http://www.golobos.com/news/19981101/fbo/19981101.nmfbo110198.html

"The University of New Mexico plays its final WAC road game as it visits Brigham Young Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is 12:07 p.m. Mountain Time from Cougar Stadium in Provo, Utah.

"The Lobos are 3-6 in their 100th season of football, and 1-5 in their 37th and final year of Western Athletic Conference action following a 28-20 loss to Fresno State last Saturday in Albuquerque. UNM has lost 5 of 6 and 3 straight at home for the first time since 1994."

Y. Linebacker Morris Is WAC Defensive Player of Week
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/nov/11031998/sports/59935.htm

"BYU linebacker Rob Morris was named the WAC Pacific Division player of the week.  Morris recorded 19 tackles, 13 unassisted, in a 13-0 win over San Diego State. BYU Coach LaVell Edwards said that Arizona State in September, ``I've never seen a linebacker play like he did.'' And Morris ``surpassed that'' against SDSU."

Brighton star Pinegar says he'll go to Y.
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/zl0nnbzc.htm

"The best high school junior center in the state has decided to stay in Utah to play college ball. But get this — he won't be playing for the University of Utah.  For a change, BYU won a basketball recruiting war over Rick Majerus and his nationally prestigious program. The Cougars landed one of the top underclassmen in the country on Monday, as 6-foot-9 Brighton High star Jesse Pinegar verbally committed to play for Steve Cleveland's basketball program beginning in the year 2000.

"It is a big relief. I thought about it a lot and decided that's what I wanted to do," said Pinegar, who was being pursued by Utah, UCLA, Duke, Arizona, Stanford and just about every other school with orange-painted rims on their campus.

"It's hard when you get on that campus to not like it," said Pinegar's high school coach, Jim Jimas, who played for BYU. "I think Steve Cleveland did a great recruiting job. He likes him and he felt comfortable to be with him."  And gaining Pinegar's allegiance could be a major breakthrough for the BYU program, which has struggled to get its head above water in recent years. Because he's a junior, he can't officially sign a national letter of intent until November 1999. "

Pinegar says yes to BYU
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/130C51841F744D62872566B1004F29D6?OpenDocument

"The 6-foot-9 Pinegar, one of the most coveted high school basketball players in the West, told Cleveland and his staff Monday evening that he had decided to attend BYU - even though he still has two seasons to play at Brighton High.  "I knew what I wanted to do and I decided, why wait?" said Pinegar

"Pinegar attended BYU's practice Monday afternoon, where he and Brighton's other standout junior, Garner Meads, sat on opposite sides of Phoenix Suns coach and former Cougar star Danny Ainge.  The timing of the decision is a coup for Cleveland.  When he took the BYU job a year ago, he faced the challenge of stopping the flow of major LDS talent to Utah and national powerhouses like Duke and Stanford.

"We must attract and sign LDS athletes," Cleveland told The Daily Herald last month at the WAC basketball meetings.  "We don't need all of them, but we need to be in the mix. It's time for the best LDS players to come back to BYU."  "I knew that if I committed now," Pinegar said, "they could start recruiting more players and it would be good for them and for me."

BYU in WAC Driver's Seat, But Not Ready to Ride High
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/nov/11031998/sports/59882.htm

"No sooner had the BYU Cougars reclaimed their perch at the top of the WAC standings than they began emphasizing how difficult it will be to stay there through their last three games against New Mexico, UTEP and Utah.  ``We're not real comfortable,'' said quarterback Kevin Feterik, ``because, I mean, we got New Mexico -- they beat us last year. And then we got UTEP.  They beat us last year. And Utah, and they beat us last year.  So we can't get overconfident, you know, we've got a little payback on our minds the next few weeks.''

Injuries taking a toll on BYU hoops squad
The Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/45574D6312808729872566B1004F2844?OpenDocument

"As basketball's opening night draws closer, BYU keeps losing players.  "It's getting to where we're almost afraid to count heads at practice," Steve Cleveland said.  The Cougs have been without senior point guard Brian Hamilton since the first day of workouts, when he strained his back lifting weights.

"Now Silester Rivers, the 6-foot-7 transfer from UVSC who was expected to step into the lineup at power forward, has gone down with a knee injury.  Rivers hyperextended his knee in last Saturday's scrimmage, and underwent an arthroscopic surgery procedure Monday.  He'll be out at least a couple of weeks.

"BYU opens the regular-season schedule Nov. 13 against Wofford."

BYU soccer team hosts WAC tourney
The Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/zl0jt3ll.htm

"BYU and San Diego State aspire to advance deep into the NCAA women's soccer tournament later this month. But first, there is unfinished business — in the form of the WAC tournament, which begins Wednesday at BYU's South Field.  The conference champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney, which expands from 32 to 48 teams this year.  Although BYU (16-3 overall, 5-1 in the WAC and ranked 15th in the country), and San Diego State (17-4, 6-0 and ranked 9th,) are virtually assured a spot in the NCAAs regardless of what happens this week, neither squad wants to leave anything to chance."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: BYU Insider Subject: [Insider] Pre-game: New Mexico - Saturday 12 noon MST Date: 04 Nov 1998 07:29:20 -0700 BYU Insider Pre-game: New Mexico ============================== Quick Facts ============================== Team: University of New Mexico Lobos Location: Provo, UT Day: Saturday, 11/07/98 Time: 12 p.m. MST Internet Radio: http://www.KSL.com Records: BYU 6-3 (4-1), New Mexico 3-6 (1-5) Last Meeting: 1997, New Mexico won 38 - 28 Weather: Rain/Snow : high 44, low 30 Latest Line: BYU by 16.5 ============================= Game Overview ============================== BYU has played New Mexico every year since 1951, and will continue the series next year in the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars have come away with wins in the last 12 games played in Provo, but the last couple have been close (17 - 14 in 1996, and 49 - 47 in 1994). Last season's loss in Albuquerque saw New Mexico dominate the second half, as they only gave up 75 yards. The result of the game sent the goalposts to the ground and the Lobos on to post-season play. The Cougar defense is coming off of a dominating performance vs. San Diego State, and will be looking to give the fans more of the same in this final home game of the season. The defense is currently ranked #7 in the NCAA, giving up a mere 264 yards per game. The secondary will be put to the test against the versatile Graham Leigh, who is one of the leading passers in the nation, and can also turn upfield and run. New Mexico brings an ace in the hole to Provo this weekend: Although Rocky Long is in just his first year at the helm of the Lobos' program, he won the last two times he matched up against the Cougars. He played quarterback for New Mexico, and engineered the last two Lobo wins over BYU, in 1971 (a 14 - 0 shutout in Provo) and 1970 (a 51 - 8 pasting in Albuquerque -- the largest margin of victory by the Lobos in the series). He was born in Provo while his father, Rod, played football for the Y. While New Mexico's record (3-6) looks unimpressive, bear in mind that three of those losses have been by 3 or fewer points, and have come in the last minute of the game, or in overtime. If things had gone just a little differently, this team could very easily be 6-3 and challenging for the conference lead. It took overtime for San Diego State to beat them. Quarterback Graham Leigh is having another impressive year on the heels of his successful junior campaign of 1997. The defense, on the other hand, has struggled throughout the season. They have done a decent job of slowing down passing offenses, but are giving up 180 yards per game on the ground, and more than 30 points per game. A bright spot for New Mexico's defense is that they have forced 10 turnovers in the past four games, which the offense has converted into 26 points. ============================== Implications ============================== BYU has some revenge to dish out in the final three games of the football season. The remaining teams on the schedule (UNM, UTEP, and the U of U) all beat the Cougars last season, squashing their hopes of post-season play for the second time in three years. Now the team can control its own destiny by winning out the rest of its games. A victory over the Lobos will help to set the tone for a strong finish to the season, and will also give the Cougs an undefeated home record for their final season in the WAC. New Mexico is to the point where they're playing for pride. This, their Centennial football season, has been a disappointing one, especially in comparison to last year's successes. Although they're out of the WAC race, they'd still love to upset BYU in Provo. ============================== Players to Watch ============================== BYU #3, Brian Gray (CB) -- On the fourth play of the San Diego State game, he returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown, setting the tone for the game. His outstanding cover play also helped maintain the defensive shutout, as he batted away a couple of would-be touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. #27, Owen Pochman (K) -- Chances are he'll go down in the record books as the best kicker to ever don a Cougar uniform. He's on track to break virtually all of the BYU kicking records. #44, Rob Morris (LB) -- The "Superfreak" never puts on a dull show. His moonwalking, disco dancing personality came out on the muddy field against San Diego State as he notched 19 tackles and pretty much single-handedly shut down one of the top rushing programs in the nation. #75, John Tait (OT) -- This junior's outstanding play has NFL scouts drooling over him. He's a team leader on and off the field. New Mexico #7, Graham Leigh (QB) -- He leads the WAC in total offense with 263 yards per game. Over the past four games, he's averaging 278 yards passing. He's being featured by ESPN SportsZone this season. You can ask him questions by going to www.espnsportszone.com and clicking on college football. #9, Martinez Williams (WR) -- This junior leads his team with 40 receptions for 661 yards and 7 touchdowns. He only needs 191 more yards to take 10th place from Terance Mathis (852 yards, 1985) on UNM's single-season record receiving list. #44, Brian Urlacher (DB) -- He's averaging 14.3 tackles per game, including 20 against San Diego State. Last week vs. Fresno State he ran back punts for the first time since high school, and had a 26 yarder. #5, Dion Marion (TB) -- His average kickoff return of 31 yards ranks him 5th in the nation. ============================== Records to Watch ============================== Owen Pochman needs to hit 5 more extra points to break his brother Ethan's record of 61 consecutive PATs made. Ronney Jenkins needs 24 yards to surpass Lakei Heimuli (857 yards, 1985) for the #10 spot in the BYU single season rushing standings. BYU holds the current NCAA record of 295 consecutive games without being shut out. Lennox Gordon needs 27 yards to surpass current head coach Rocky Long for the #6 spot in the New Mexico career rushing standings. ============================== Injury Report ============================== BYU Ronney Jenkins (TB) -- slight hip injury, should be ready to play New Mexico Edwin Garrett (CB) -- herniated disc - Out for the season Barrett Garrison (DT) -- left ACL vs. San Diego State - Out for the season Tyler Fenwick (WR) -- left knee at Hawai'i - Out for the season Travis Journagan (DE) -- torn MCL vs. UTEP - Could be back for the Utah game. Marcus McDavid (CB) -- knee laceration - Questionable Jeff Macrea (DT) -- left knee - Questionable. Recap
http://espn.sportszone.com/ncf/1998/981107/recap/nnhbbi.html

"The Cougars notched their fifth straight win on Saturday with a 46-21 rout of New Mexico at Cougar Stadium. BYU (7-3, 5-1 Western Athletic Conference) finished its home schedule undefeated in six games and remained atop the WAC's Pacific Division.

Feterik continued his strong play in the season's second half with another commanding performance. He was 25-for-42 for 422 yards and four touchdowns, completing passes to 10 receivers and befuddling the Lobos defense, which allowed 522 total yards, or nearly seven per Cougars snap.

``(Offensive coordinator Norm) Chow said we were going to let it fly today, and I just went in with that attitude,'' Feterik said. ``If I get 40 or 45 throws, we're going to put up numbers like that.''

Feterik was also the clear victor in his duel with Lobos quarterback Graham Leigh, the WAC's total offense leader. Leigh was frustrated by BYU's smothering seventh-ranked defense, which scored on an interception return and recorded a safety.

Brigham Young still controls its own destiny in conference play.  Only two road games _ against UTEP and archrival Utah remain on the Cougars' schedule, and two wins will put BYU in the WAC championship game in Las Vegas.

The first half featured two lengthy runs after short pass receptions. Ronney Jenkins turned a screen pass into a 52-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and Dion Marion took Leigh's shovel pass 57 yards for a score 2:02 before halftime.

Mike Rigell and Ben Horton caught touchdown passes from Feterik in the third quarter, and on the first play of the fourth, Jenkins caught a pass behind the line of scrimmage, reversed his field and ran 52 yards for a score that put Brigham Young up 40-14.

Jenkins finished with 71 rushing yards and five receptions for 101 yards.

Linebacker Rob Morris, Brigham Young's leading tackler and disco dancer, made his first career interception in the fourth quarter and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown. The eccentric star then drew an illegal celebration penalty for diving into the end zone and making snow angels on the grass.

Of course, Morris' good-natured antics had their price. After the penalty, kicker Owen Pochman, who earlier had broken his brother Ethan's record with his 62nd straight extra point, missed the ensuing kick from the extra distance."

Detmer rallies 49ers past Panthers
http://espn.sportszone.com/nfl/1998/981108/recap/carsfo.html

"With Steve Young hurt, the San Francisco 49ers turned to Ty Detmer and Wade Richey for a comeback.  Detmer, who had four of San Francisco's six turnovers, led a drive to set up Richey's 46-yard field goal with 33 seconds left, lifting the 49ers past the Carolina Panthers 25-23 on Sunday.

"I think most guys would like to have the ball in their hands toward the end of the game," Detmer said. "For me, it's satisfying knowing we put that drive together. We had made mistakes, but we didn't let them stand in our way."

"Detmer, also the holder for Richey, calmed the rookie kicker before the decisive field goal."

  News Recap (11/11/98)

BYU's Press Release for UTEP Game
http://www.byucougars.com/football/releases/110998.html

"While BYU kept its destiny in its own hands with a 46-21 thrashing of New Mexico, UTEP had its hopes dashed by a 34-27 overtime loss at Utah. The Pacific Division title goes the Cougars if they win their remaining games, but if BYU slips, San Diego State and Utah have a shot at the title. BYU goes on the road at UTEP and Utah.  Utah travels to New Mexico and hosts BYU. San Diego State goes to San Jose State and hosts UTEP."

UTEP's Press Release for UTEP Game
http://www.utep.edu/paydirt/football/notes/

"Last season the Miners pulled off one of the biggest upsets in not only their history but in college football in 1997 by defeating the 25th-ranked Cougars, 14-3.  The win snapped a 10-game losing streak to BYU, but the Cougars still owned the 27-7-1 advantage in the head-to-head series."

BYU QB Feterik, LB Morris Are Named WAC Players of the Week
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/nov/11101998/sports/61040.htm
11/10/98

"Brigham Young quarterback Kevin Feterik hit 25 of 42 passes for a career-high 422 yards to win offensive Player of the Week honors in the Western Athletic Conference's Pacific Division Monday.  BYU linebacker Rob Morris recorded 10 solo tackles in the 46-21 victory over New Mexico to earn defensive Player of the Week honors."

Cougs, Feterik Riding Titanic High
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/nov/11101998/sports/61027.htm
11/10/98

"Amazing what a 400-yard passing day can do for a quarterback's confidence. Wallowing in insecurity and doubt just a few weeks ago, BYU's Kevin Feterik is now practically screaming ``I'm king of the world!'' from the bow of the Cougar ship.  ``I'm so confident in my receivers right now, I just throw it up there and tell them to come down with it,'' he said.  And the pass protection?  ``I'm just back there kind of in my own little zone,'' he said.

"It's showing. The Cougars have won five games in a row to take control of the division title chase, and Feterik is looking more comfortable which each one.  He won WAC Pacific Division Offensive Player of the Week honors for his 422-yard performance in a 46-21 victory over New Mexico on Saturday -- the best game for a BYU quarterback since Steve Sarkisian had 536 against Texas A&M in the 1996 season-opener -- and has completed 87-of-133 passes for 1,318 yards, nine touchdowns and just one interception since the team's last loss. Prospects for a rotation with backup Drew Miller are not merely absent, but absurd."

Cougars upend Cal Stars

"Times have changed.  Obviously.  The Cougs staged an exciting second-half rally to whip a pretty decent California All-Star club 93-87 Saturday night at the Marriott Center.  And coach Steve Cleveland was... Thrilled?  No.  Reasonably pleased?  No again.  Verging on furious?  Well, yeah.  "I told the team that there probably isn't a Division I team in the country we could have beaten tonight," Cleveland fumed.

"After all the work we've done on our offense, we didn't run it at all.  "And defensively, I can't really remember giving up that many points in all my years of coaching.  "We've got a long, long way to go."

BYU's hoop offense perfect for Bigelow

"He's new. He's a rookie.  But Mark Bigelow is the perfect player for BYU's motion game, according to coach Steve Cleveland.  "He's the one guy on our team who knows how to move without the ball in our offense," Cleveland said.  Bigelow, a 6-foot-6 freshman from Olympia, Wash., led the Cougars with 28 points and 11 rebounds in Saturday's 93-87 exhibition win over the California All-Stars.  Bigelow made 9 of 12 field goals, including a pair of treys.

"He bombed from outside. He got put-backs. He did some slashing and driving. And BYU fans got a peek at the future.  "Mark ran this offense in high school and knows all the ins and outs," Cleveland said.  But while Bigelow plays with plenty of cool, he claimed his first appearance in a Division I game - albeit an exhibition - made him nervous.  "I was nervous, but excited," Bigelow said."

BYU wins game but loses Jepsen to ankle sprain

"A preseason exhibition game, especially one against a foreign team, is hardly a measuring stick for future performance. Still, such a seemingly harmless contest can have serious implications on future performance.  BYU learned that frightening lesson Tuesday night at the Marriott Center during a 94-68 exhibition blowout of BC Matav Pecsi, a team from Hungary, as the Cougars saw yet another key player, center Bret Jepsen, suffer an injury.  Jepsen sustained a moderate ankle sprain midway through the first half and did not return to the game.  Coach Steve Cleveland isn't sure if the 6-foot-11 junior will be ready for Friday's season-opener. "Bret is day-to-day," Cleveland said.  Forward Silester Rivers and guard Brian Hamilton, who missed Tuesday's game due to injuries, are two other wounded BYU players. Neither will be available Friday.

"As for BYU players who are healthy, freshman Mark Bigelow turned in another sparkling performance.  Bigelow led the Cougars in scoring and rebounding for the second straight outing. The 6-foot-6 forward logged a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to complement his 28-point, 10-rebound performance Saturday night in an exhibition victory over the California All-Stars."

Recruiting battle going well for BYU programs

"It may be two years before Brighton High star Jesse Pinegar actually puts on a BYU jersey and trots on the floor. But fallout of his early commitment to Steve Cleveland's basketball program is already reverberating across the West.  Pinegar is listed as one of the top juniors in the country by Street and Smith's, Athlon and Dick Vitale's preseason basketball magazines.

"SPEAKING OF recruits, Luke Staley, a running back/defensive back from Oregon who has committed to LaVell Edwards had a monster championship game over the weekend.  Staley, the younger brother of Cougar defensive back Dustin Staley who is now on an LDS mission, scored six touchdowns in leading Tualatin to the Pac-8 championship in a 49-7 win over Forest Grove Friday.  Putting together a highlight film, Staley had touchdown runs of 9, 66 and 76 yards. He caught touchdown passes of 14 and 60 yards and also returned an interception 49 yards to paydirt.  Considered by rival coaches as Oregon's best prep football player, Staley finished the day with 307 yards rushing on 19 carries. He caught five passes for 82 yards and had two interceptions."

"UP NORTH in Idaho, Glenns Ferry star Alex Ferris finished his prep career over the weekend just days after committing to BYU.  The lightning-quick multi-talented Ferris rushed for 173 yards on 17 carries in a loss to Teton.  Considered the best athlete in 3-A in Idaho by Idaho Statesman sports writer Jeff Pinkham, Ferris had just 16 yards rushing at halftime, but boosted his totals with a 77-yard touchdown gallop.  Ferris will likely play safety at BYU."

Farris wheels out commitment to BYU

"Like the way BYU has upgraded its speed on defense?  Well, the Cougars just got a little faster.  Alex Farris, the fastest player at the Cougar football camp the past two years, verbally committed to LaVell Edwards Tuesday night.  That brings to five the number of players who have told Edwards they will sign letters of intent in December (for junior college transfers) or February.  Farris plays running back and linebacker at tiny Glenns Ferry High in Glenns Ferry, Idaho, but will probably be a safety and/or nickel back at BYU.  He ran a 4.54 40 at BYU this summer, and was offered a scholarship before leaving camp."

Y. hoops roster requires juggling act
Deseret News
http://deseretnews.com/spt/zt0k1gb7.htm
11/11/1998

"Under the Big Top of the Marriott Center, home to one of the country's biggest college basketball rebuilding projects, BYU coach Steve Cleveland and his staff have the best juggling act this side of Ringling Bros.  This behind-the-scenes performance has Cougar coaches attempting to do the impossible: evaluating and integrating more than two dozen BYU players — including a revolving door of missionaries — while observing the NCAA-mandated 13-scholarship limit.  There's not much room at the BYU Basketball Inn, even though it's not Cleveland's fault and the numbers have been pared down since last year.  BYU's roster is bursting at the seams with a collection of rising young stars, semi-established veterans, newcomers, role players, walk-ons, redshirts and whiteshirts (LDS missionaries).

"Planned right, the missionary program can be a boon to a program. Planned poorly, the results can be disastrous (see the 1-25 BYU team).  Currently, the Cougars have 10 missionaries serving around the world and several will be back prior to next season to find a limited number of scholarships available, forcing Cleveland to make some tough decisions."

Orem's Opunui commits to Cougars
Provo Daily Herald
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/A9AB0AE8F4840E1B872566B9004BC569?OpenDocument
11/11/98

"Shawn Opunui of Orem High, considered the best prep point guard in Utah, has verbally committed to play for BYU.  Opunui, a 5-foot-11 senior, said he will sign a letter of intent to play for the Cougars, but won't be part of the program until he serves an LDS Church mission.  "It was BYU's flexibility in allowing me to serve my mission first that made the difference in recruiting," Opunui said. Opunui said he liked BYU's coaching staff and the fact they are perfectionists in what they do.

"Coach Steve Cleveland came to my house and was very honest, putting everything on the table," Opunui said. "I like that.  Some coaches were kind of shady about their plans for me.  "I think BYU basketball is on the right track. When I return, it will be a very strong program. That's where it's headed right now."  Opunui averaged 16.5 points and 5.5 assists as a junior. Known for his quickness and ball-handling skills, he also shot 48 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and 85 percent from the free-throw line."

Game Overview

BYU enters this contest in control of their season, as long as they continue to win.  Riding somewhat of a wave, the Cougars have won their past five games in a row, and have shown that they can move the chains and find paydirt.  They are demonstrating the ability to throw the ball as well as run it, and that balance could prove to be important in these final two crucial games.  A solid group of underclassmen is beginning to show the benefits of experience on the offensive side of the ball, and they take their momentum and confidence into the Sun Bowl, the site of last year's humiliation suffered at the hands of the Miners.

BYU's defense continues to control opponents, and is currently ranked #7 in the nation.  Solid play from the entire unit has allowed it to dominate games and has maintained great field position for the offense.  In over 60% of opponents' possessions this year, the defense has forced three and outs.

UTEP is coming off of an emotional overtime loss to Utah in Salt Lake City.  For the second consecutive week, backup QB John Rayborn entered the game to give the Miners a boost.  He finished with 346 yards against the Utes, but ended with three incomplete passes into the end zone in the extra period.  UTEP has been able to move the ball fairly well this year, but has had trouble converting those yards into points.

Simply put, UTEP's defense is porous, especially against the run, as they're giving up 232 yards per game on the ground.  Although middle linebacker Dale Kirry and defensive end Brian Young are standouts for the Miners, as a team, they haven't been very successful in shutting down opponents' ground games.  The special teams players have been solid throughout the season.

Implications

BYU returns to El Paso with revenge on the mind.  In 1997 the Miners blitzed the Cougar offense into a daze, and only gave up a field goal, ending BYU's amazing NCAA record streak of finding the end zone in 138 consecutive games.  To ensure that they will remain in sole possession of the top spot in the Pacific Division race, the Y needs to notch a win on Saturday.

UTEP will be facing BYU for possibly the last time, as the Cougars and seven other teams leave the WAC to form the Mountain West Conference.  The Miners saw their hopes of contending for the conference title disappear in last week's overtime loss to Utah, but they'll still play with the hopes of repeating last year's performance.

Players to Watch

BYU

#2, Jason Walker (SS) -- He grabbed his 6th interception last week and moved into a 5th place national ranking.

#7, Kevin Feterik (QB) -- With his 422 yard, 4 TD game last Saturday, his confidence is running high.  He has only thrown one interception in the past month and a half, and it came as he was blindsided by an oncoming rusher.  The team's success tends to follow his performance.

#16, Ronney Jenkins (RB) -- With 912 yards rushing in this, his sophomore campaign, it seems inevitable that he'll become the fifth running back in Cougar history to gain 1000 in a season.  Going up against the Miners' weak rush defense could give him some big opportunities.

#44, Rob Morris (LB) -- The Superfreak continued his dominating play last week, notching 12 tackles, 10 of them unassisted, besides returning an interception 51 yards for a swan dive into the end zone.  He has amazingly been the top defensive point getter for BYU in all 10 games this season.

#88, Ben Horton (WR) -- This sophomore is gaining more and more attention as he makes great catches under pressure.

UTEP

#18, Ricky Bishop (PK) -- A Lou Groza award candidate, this sophomore kicker leads the Miners in scoring on the season, and has made 15 of 17 field goals on the year.

#21, Javier Sanchez (PR) -- He has emerged as one of the top punt returners in the nation, averaging 12 yards per attempt.

#50, Dale Kirry (LB) -- He's the heart of the Miner defense, and is averaging 12 tackles per game.

#87, Brian Natkin (TE) -- He's exploded for 13 catches in the last two weeks, and is now the 5th ranked receiving tight end in the nation, as well as being an excellent run blocker.

#89, Jimmy Carpenter (WR) -- He has caught a pass in 20 consecutive games, and ranks 5th in UTEP's career receiving yardage list.

Records to Watch

BYU holds the current NCAA record of 296 consecutive games without being shut out.

Ronney Jenkins currently stands at #9 in the BYU single season rushing standings.  With 131 yards, he can sprint past Brian McKenzie ('95 & '96), Lakei Heimuli ('86), Jeff Blanc ('75), and Jamal Willis ('92 & '94) into the #3 spot.

Ronney Jenkins needs 22 yards to surpass Eldon Fortie (1,666 yards, 1960 - 1962) for the #7 ranking in the BYU career rushing standings.

Injury Report

BYU

Derick Bates (DB) -- He sustained an ankle injury in the New Mexico game and will not play for the remainder of the regular season.

Ronney Jenkins (RB) -- His right hip has been tender for several weeks, but doesn't appear to be anything major.

Margin Hooks (WR) -- He suffered a slight shoulder separation last Saturday, but should be ready to play.

Recap
http://espn.sportszone.com/ncf/1998/981114/recap/bbittl.html

"Kevin Feterick threw two touchdown passes and Ronney Jenkins rushed for 176 yards and a score to lead Brigham Young to a 31-14 victory over Texas-El Paso in a battle of Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division foes.

"BYU (8-3, 6-1 WAC Pacific) needs a win at Utah next weekend to clinch the Pacific Division title. San Diego State, which is also 6-1 in the division, lost a 13-0 decision to the Cougars on October 29th and needs BYU to lose next week if it has any hopes of capturing the Pacific crown.

"Feterick completed 17-of-25 passes for 185 yards with an interception. He connected with tight end Tevita Ofahengauo on a 10-yard scoring strike 10 seconds into the second quarter to even the contest, 7-7. Feterick's nine-yard TD pass to Mike Rigell with 1:35 remaining in the half knotted the score at 14-14.

"Jenkins, who carried the ball 21 times, exploded on a 79-yard TD jaunt with 12:14 remaining to put the Cougars ahead for good, 21-14. Junior Mahe scored on a six-yard run less than two minutes later to give BYU a 14-point bulge."

Game Overview

BYU takes the field on Saturday for the last of its 12 game regular season schedule.  This is what we've been waiting for all year long:  a nationally televised matchup with the arch-rival Utes that, like so many times in the past, will determine the conference champion.  The Cougars have shown the ability to move the ball a little more consistently during the past several weeks, and they will need to play up to their potential this week, as they face quite possibly their toughest opponent of the season.  Kevin Feterik is on a roll, having thrown 14 TDs and only 5 interceptions this year.  He's only thrown 2 picks in his last 172 attempts, dating back to the fourth game of the year and spanning the current six game winning streak.  On the ground, Ronney Jenkins is having what he terms a "mediocre" year -- in layman's terms, he's only become the 5th Cougar back to rush for 1000 yards in a season, and is pushing his way up through the record books.

The Cougar defensive unit will receive possibly its biggest test of the year on Saturday.  The matchup of the 6th ranked rush defense in the nation vs. the U's potent running game will prove to be interesting.  Chances are, however, that the game will be decided through the air.  BYU's defensive backs, who have played heroic roles throughout the season, are for the most part pretty banged up.  Besides reserve Derick Bates, all are expected to play, but the artificial turf in the Sun Bowl took its toll, as several key players suffered sprains and various other injuries.  Their ability to stay in the game and play at 100% will have a huge say in which way this game goes.

Utah will field a very good offensive team in this, the two teams' 80th meeting.  Running back Mike Anderson leads the WAC with 1144 yards on the year, complemented by Omar Bacon's 675 yards.  Their passing game is productive, as well, with QB Jonathan Crosswhite (filling in for an injured Darnell Arceneaux) ranked 37th in the nation for pass efficiency.  The Utes have lost 3 games this season by a combined 7 points.  They held leads late in the game against Boise State and Wyoming, and played SDSU even before falling to the Spartans in OT.

Utah's defense boasts numbers similar to BYU's.  Their rush defense is ranked 8th in the country, allowing only one yard per game more than BYU (87 as opposed to 86).  If the Utes are able to hold BYU's rushing attack under 124 yards, they will set a new school record for fewest rushing yards allowed in a season.  Last week, tough linebacker Phil Glover came back from an injury that made him miss half the season.  The Utes aren't quite as dominating when it comes to defending the pass.

Implications

BYU has so many reasons to win this game that motivation shouldn't be a problem.  With a victory, they can sew up the Pacific Division championship and return to the WAC title game in Las Vegas.  Perhaps even easier to keep in mind is the fact that the Utes have handed them four losses in the past five years, the only exception being the 14 - 1 1996 season.  The bragging rights alone that come with winning this game are monumental.

Utah hopes that a win over BYU will send them to Las Vegas in one of two ways:  if San Diego State were to fall to UTEP, the Utes would be the division champs, and would head to Sam Boyd Stadium on December 5th for a matchup vs. the Mountain Division Champion.  Even if SDSU were to win and go on to represent the division, the Utes would be a likely candidate for the Las Vegas bowl at the end of December.  If the Utes lose on Saturday, they can probably kiss their post-season hopes goodbye once again.

Players to Watch

BYU

#3, Brian Gray (CB) -- His high ankle sprain has slowed him down for a few weeks now.  His ability to play hard throughout the game could be a huge factor in shutting down the Utes.

#7, Kevin Feterik (QB) -- The game could hinge on his effectiveness.  If he's able to move the ball through the air, the Cougars should come out of the contest with a win.

#14, Margin Hooks (WR) -- He leads the Cougar receivers, and his game breaking runs have made the difference more than once this season.

#16, Ronney Jenkins (RB) -- His desire and capacity for greatness seem to increase with each game.  Rice Stadium was kind to him during his freshman campaign, as he notched 3 TDs and 156 yards that day.

Utah

#16, Jonathan Crosswhite (QB) -- Last week he completed 16 of 22 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown.  He owns two of the top four single-game passing percentages in the U's history.

#22, Mike Anderson (RB) -- He leads the WAC and is ranked 13th in the nation with 114 ypg.  He needs just one more touchdown on the year to tie the school record of 13.  He leads the Utes in every rushing category, and is the U's leading scorer with 72 points on the year.

#80, Daniel Jones (WR) -- He leads the Utes in catches (51), yards receiving (732), and touchdowns (3).

#5, Jerome Anderson (WR) -- He leads the Utes in yards per catch, averaging 16 yards every time he hauls in a pass, and is tied with Jones at 3 touchdowns on the season.

Records to Watch

BYU holds the current NCAA record of 297 consecutive games without being shut out.

Ronney Jenkins currently stands at #3 in the BYU single season rushing standings with 1088 yards.  With 61 yards, he can surpass Eldon Fortie (1149 yards, 1962) for the #2 ranking.

Ronney Jenkins needs 135 yards to surpass Brian McKenzie (1954 yards, 1996 - 1997) for the #6 ranking in the BYU career rushing standings.

Injury Report

BYU

Derick Bates (DB) -- He is out for the season after injuring his leg against New Mexico.

Brian Gray (CB) -- He is slated to start, but a high ankle sprain has nagged him for weeks on end.

Jason Walker (SS) -- He is also expected to start, but has been limited by a groin injury.

Tyler Nelson (WS) -- He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday, but doctors were relieved to find that his posterior cruciate ligament was only strained.  He should play on Saturday.

Utah

Darnell Arceneaux (QB) -- He's out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Courtney Richins (WR) -- Out for the season with a torn ACL.

C.J. Johnson (TE) -- Out for the season with a broken left leg.

Brandon Dart (DB) -- Out for the season with a foot injury.

Nathan Sybrowsky (DL) -- Out for the season with an injured knee.

Roy Allen (WR) -- Out for the season with an injured knee.

Weber St. Wins the Battle With Cougars
The Salt Lake Tribune

"Overwhelming Brigham Young at the start, Weber State held on to win Thursday 83-80 in the annual game between these two in-state rivals.  While BYU was busy fumbling the ball away repeatedly, the Wildcats stormed out to a 14-0 lead before Bret Jepsen posted the Cougars' first score at the 16:40 mark. At 10 minutes into the game, Weber State led 26-8.

"It must have been something about the south basket. When they switched sides at halftime, the Cougars roared back to within five before Danny Bower's two free throws with one second left provided the margin.  Looking at the final box score, BYU Coach Steve Cleveland was pleased with virtually every statistic. The Cougars shot an impressive 57 percent from the floor and won the rebound battle 33-27. But the ugly spot came in the turnovers category.  BYU (1-1) gave away the ball 25 times, with 16 coming in the deciding first half."

Predictions about Saturday's big game from all walks of life
The Deseret News
11/19/98
http://deseretnews.com/spt/010kebgw.htm

"The Deseret News has asked some well-known folks in the community to step forward and show their true colors by boldly predicting the outcome of Saturday's clash.

BYU 28, Utah 21
"I figure that after Feterik and Jenkins negotiate our I-15 project on their way to the game they will have so many moves that the Ute defense will never stop them." — Tom Warne, UDOT executive director and BYU grad

Utah 21, BYU 14
"I like them both. But because I went to Utah, I have to pick it. But I always root for the Y when it's not playing Utah. And if Utah loses, I have to take Sen. (Orrin) Hatch to lunch." — Rep. Jim Hansen, Utah's 1st Congressional District

No Prediction
"I wouldn't touch that with a 10-foot pole and you can quote me on that." — Gov. Mike Leavitt, who clearly enjoys such a high public approval rating for good reason

Y., U. opponents won't predict
The Deseret News
11/19/98
http://deseretnews.com/spt/010kg4ve.htm

"Not one of the six head coaches who have played both Utah and BYU this season would give a prediction as to who would win Saturday's big game at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Not even the coaches who will no longer be in the same conference as the Utes and Cougars next season would bite. They all know not to say anything that may come back to haunt them.  They know that somewhere down the road they will have to meet up against or need a favor from LaVell Edwards and/or Ron McBride.  "I may be a new head coach," said New Mexico's Rocky Long, "but I know better than to pick one over the other."

Recap
http://football.yahoo.com/ncaaf/recaps/981121/bbiuuc.html

"Owen Pochman kicked four field goals, but it was Ryan Kanishero's miss from 32 yards in the closing seconds that allowed Brigham Young to clinch the Pacific Division of the Western Athletic Conference with a 26-24 victory over Utah.

"The Utes (7-4, 5-3 WAC Pacific) closed within 26-24 on a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Daniel Jones with 2:41 left. After forcing BYU (9-3, 7-1 Pacific) to punt, Utah marched to the Cougars 15-yard line, but Kanishero missed the potential game-winning field goal.

"BYU will play Mountain Division champion Air Force in the WAC championship game on December 5th in Las Vegas, the final time a game will be played with the WAC as a 16-team conference. Both the Cougars and Air Force are among eight schools leaving the WAC at the end of the academic year to form the Mountain West Conference.

"Pochman nailed field goals of 43 and 48 yards in a 9:06 span of the fourth quarter, giving the Cougars a 26-17 lead with 2:59 left.

"Jenkins finished with 128 yards on 22 carries, while Feterik completed 20-of-28 passes for 221 yards. Pochman's only miss came on a 57-yard attempt as time expired in the first half."

Other Articles about the Game

ESPN
http://espn.sportszone.com/ncf/1998/981121/recap/bbiuuc.html

"When the ball hit the upright, I thought, `Man, somebody loves me,"' BYU coach LaVell Edwards said.

"Kaneshiro's kick was only made possible by a wacky sequence of fourth-quarter events during which BYU made every attempt to give away a hard-fought win with poor special teams play.

"Owen Pochman's 47-yard field goal with 2:59 left put BYU up 26-17, but Daniel Jones returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown. All told, Utah racked up 236 yards on punt and kickoff returns.

"Our kicking game was exceptional, but our coverage on kicks almost gave them the game," Edwards said. "It never should have come down to us needing them to miss a field goal."

"After getting the ball back, BYU's offense was forced to punt, and Crosswhite found Jones for a 43-yard reception to the BYU 24 with 1:26 to play _ but a celebration penalty on Jones pushed Utah back to the 39.

"But Crosswhite completed clutch passes to Donny Utu and Jones to bring the ball to the BYU 17 with 22 seconds left.

"Utah ran the clock down to nine seconds. Kaneshiro's hooked kick started wide and came back, but it smacked the upright head-on and bounced away as the Cougars rushed the field and drew two celebration penalties, including one on BYU offensive coordinator Roger French."

Basketball Recap : Auburn 62, BYU 43

"Jay Heard recorded 12 points and four steals off the bench to help Auburn overcome a poor shooting performance in a 62-43 victory over Brigham Young Monday night.  The Tigers (4-0) went just 9-of-32 from the floor in the first half and missed 15 of 23 free throw attempts in their toughest test so far.  But the Cougars (1-2) committed 24 turnovers and shot even worse 16-of-52 for 32 percent.

"Auburn led just 22-15 at halftime in its closest game of the season. The Tigers had won their first three games by an average of 45 points and are giving up just 48 points a game.  Nathan Cooper led BYU with 14 points off the bench and Bret Jepsen had 13 rebounds to go with eight points."

Liberty Bowl expected to invite BYU to play Tulane on Dec. 31
The Deseret News (11/23/98)
http://deseretnews.com/spt/050oktg4.htm

"The Liberty Bowl is prepared to extend an invitation to BYU in the next few days — as long as some financial issues are resolved.  The Cougars, fresh off their 26-24 victory over Utah Saturday and eyeing its WAC Championship clash Dec. 5 against Air Force, are the Memphis-based bowl's No. 1 choice. For BYU, the feeling's mutual.

"BYU is at the top of our list," Liberty Bowl executive director Steve Ehrhart said Monday. "We have an awful lot of interest in BYU. We're strongly looking at it right now."  He said the chances are "excellent" the Cougars, vying for an at-large berth in the game, will receive an invitation sometime this week. Tulane, undefeated and ranked No. 11 in the nation, is the Conference USA champion and earned an automatic bid to the Liberty Bowl — which has a payout of $1.1 million per team — on Saturday."

Edwards, DeBerry yuk it up in Vegas
The Provo Daily Herald (11/24/98)

"It's way too early to start predicting the outcome of the WAC championship game between BYU and Air Force.  It's also too soon for coaches LaVell Edwards and Fisher DeBerry to get into specifics about the matchup.  So when they flew to The City That Never Sleeps Monday for a press conference promoting the Dec. 5 game, both vets fell back on their best plays.  Jokes.

"A couple of years ago, I think they invited the two coaches with the least amount of hair (Edwards and Wyoming's Joe Tiller)," said Edwards, whose team won the Pacific Division with a record of 9-3 overall and 7-1 in the WAC.  "This year, they invited the two oldest ones."

"We don't know much about BYU yet," said DeBerry, a national coach of the year candidate for winning the Mountain Division at 10-1 overall, 7-1 in the conference. "I do know they have one of the best linebackers in the country in Rob Morris."

Coug fans gobble up tickets to WAC event
The Provo Daily Herald (11/24/98)

"Another day passed Monday without an official invitation from the Liberty Bowl, but thousands of BYU fans might be helping wiggle that bid loose.  The school sold out its 8,500 tickets to the WAC championship game, on a day when only Cougar Club members and BYU faculty, staff and students were allowed to purchase them.

"Tickets will be available for the general public today at 8 a.m.  School officials drove back from Las Vegas Monday night with another 5,000 tickets."

Men's soccer wins 3rd straight National Championship
BYU Newsnet

"Absolute domination.  The men's soccer team outscored its opponents 23-2 over six tournament games to win its third-straight club national championship Saturday.  The Cougars defeated Texas Tech University 4-0 in the final.  Freshman Brandon LeRoy was named most valuable player of the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association Championships. The powerful forward led the Cougars to their third title with five tournament goals."

BYU harriers finish a close 2nd at NCAA championship
The Deseret News (11/24/98)
http://deseretnews.com/spt/060jm114.htm

"The BYU women's cross country team fell short in its bid to earn a second consecutive national title Monday at NCAA Championships in Lawrence, Kan., but at least the Cougars can say they helped make it exciting.  In one of the closest 1-2-3 finishes in NCAA cross country history, third-ranked Villanova edged No. 1 BYU to earn the national title, 106-110, while No. 3 Stanford placed third with 111 points."

BYU to face No. 11 Tulane
http://espnet.SportsZone.com/ncf/news/1998/981124/00957760.html

"Brigham Young will finalize its postseason travel schedule on Wednesday by accepting an invitation to the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31 in Memphis.

"BYU will face undefeated and No. 11-ranked Tulane, which clinched a bid last weekend by winning the Conference USA title. The Green Wave (10-0, 6-0 CUSA) finishes its season on Thursday against Louisiana Tech.

"Brigham Young (9-3, 7-1 Western Athletic Conference) will first play Air Force in the WAC championship game on Dec. 5 in Las Vegas, but regardless of the outcome, the Cougars will make their 21st trip to a bowl game and their first to the Liberty.

"With the bid, BYU avoids missing bowls in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1972-73, the first two years of coach LaVell Edwards' tenure at the school. In 1997, the Cougars were shut out the postseason for just the third time in the last 25 years with a 6-5 record.

"The Green Wave (10-0, 6-0 CUSA) had hoped to be included in the Bowl Championship Series, the statistical ranking of the nation's top teams which determines who will play for the national championship.  But the BCS announced earlier this week that Tulane was free to play in the Liberty.  Bowl officials have repeatedly said they were excited about the opportunity to match Tulane against a team with the national following of Brigham Young.

"The Liberty Bowl requires schools to guarantee the purchase of an allotment of at least 10,000 tickets before the game. With BYU's large national fan base and history of traveling to bowls with large numbers of fans, the tickets shouldn't be a problem, sources said. "

Liberty Bowl likes Y.-Tulane matchup
The Deseret News (11/26/98)
http://deseretnews.com/spt/0719sm2j.htm

"AXA/Equitable Liberty Bowl executive director Steve Ehrhart wasn't about to leave town without meeting BYU coach LaVell Edwards.  "I think we've had all the great coaches," Ehrhart told Edwards. "But you're the one we were missing."  Not anymore. Ehrhart visited Cougar Stadium Wednesday to formally invite BYU to participate in the Dec. 31 bowl game in Memphis, Tenn. The  Cougars (9-3) will face Tulane (10-0) in the Liberty Bowl's 40th anniversary game.

"Ehrhart said his organization is honored to add Edwards and BYU to a Liberty Bowl legacy that includes coaches Bear Bry- ant, Lou Holtz, Joe Paterno and Tom Osborne; as well as players Bo Jackson, Doug Flutie, Archie Manning and Randy White.  "It's going to be a great experience for us to go to Memphis and play in the Liberty Bowl," Edwards said. "We're very excited about it."  The feeling is mutual. Ehrhart said the bowl committee and television partner ESPN are thrilled with the prospect of pitting two conference champions against one another."

Undefeated, No. 11 Tulane Routs Bulldogs
The Salt Lake Tribune (11/27/98)
http://www.sltrib.com/11271998/sports/63748.htm

"Toney Converse tied a school record by rushing for four touchdowns and Shawn King threw three touchdown passes as No. 11 Tulane routed Louisiana Tech 63-30 Thursday night to finish the regular season unbeaten.  Tulane (11-0), the Conference USA champion, will play Brigham Young (9-3) in the Liberty Bowl on New Year's Eve. The Green Wave finished the regular season undefeated and untied for the first time since 1931.

"Converse gained 182 yards on 24 carries, and King completed 19-of-26 passes for 330 yards and rushed for a touchdown.  He became the first player in NCAA Division I-A history to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 500 yards in an 11-game season."

Robbie Reid Happy He Landed in A `Great Spot'
The Salt Lake Tribune (11/25/98)
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/nov/11251998/sports/63428.htm

``I've wound up in a great spot,'' he said.  The burdens he once bore are long gone, discarded three years ago when he left the Brigham Young basketball team. Reid was one of the countless athletes who left BYU to serve an LDS mission. But he never came back.

"Upon returning home last year to Spanish Fork, Reid transferred to Michigan to play his final two years of college basketball. Reid played at BYU for two years, coached by his father, Roger. The elder Reid was fired during his son's mission, a move that ultimately ended both their BYU careers.  Now a senior, Reid is in his second year as Michigan's starting point guard.

``I can go out and have a bad game, and that's just it,'' Reid said. ``It's not because I shouldn't be out there or `The only reason he's playing is because his dad's a coach' or whatever reason people could come up with. It's so nice to have everybody supporting you in the stands, and at school everybody is behind you and loves the way you play. That has been just a really great experience the last year and a half.''

Women's Volleyball Team Advances at WAC Tourney
The Salt Lake Tribune (11/26/98)
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/nov/11261998/sports/63624.htm

"Brigham Young advanced to the semifinals of the WAC women's volleyball tournament Wednesday.  The Cougars beat Wyoming 15-13, 15-5, 15-3 at the MGM Grand Garden. They will play UNLV on Friday night in a match televised live by Fox Sports, with the championship match scheduled Saturday afternoon."

The Salt Lake Tribune (11/25/98)
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/nov/11251998/sports/63452.htm

"Guard Amanda Covington scored 27 points and Brigham Young overcame turnover trouble to take an 87-80 victory Tuesday night in women's basketball at the Centrum."

BB Preview : BYU vs. #15 Arizona

Location:  Provo, UT
Date/Time: Today, 7pm
TV/Radio/Internet: KSL, Channel 5 (TV), 1160 AM (Radio)
Records:  BYU 1-2; UA 2-0
Series:  UA leads, 18-17
Last Meeting:  UA 76, BYU 71 (1991)
Latest Line:  UA by 10 1/2

"Fifteenth-ranked Arizona takes to the road for the first time this season when it visits Brigham Young for the first time in over seven years.  Arizona, which in 1991 ended the Cougars' season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, is 18-17 all-time against BYU. Wildcats coach Lute Olson is looking to improve to 3-0 lifetime versus Brigham Young.  Jason Terry averages 22.5 points per game and A.J. Bramlett adds 12 and 11.5 rebounds to lead the Wildcats, who squeaked by Tennessee by a point in their opener on November 13th

"BYU is coming off a 62-43 setback at Auburn on Monday. The Cougars are 1-0 at home after posting a 73-67 victory over Wofford on November 13th.  Nathan Cooper scores 12 points a game to pace the Cougars, who are shooting a woeful 59 percent (37-of-63) from the free-throw line."

Cleveland is taking a new approach at Y.
The Deseret News (11/28/98)
http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,20000033,00.html?

"Steve Cleveland is feeling good again after his winter and spring of discontent.  He's saying he feels "positive."  He's saying he feels more confident than ever that he knows how to turn the BYU basketball program around.  He's saying things such as, "I could not feel better about the program than I do now."  Which is more than he could have said a few months ago. Cleveland, whose young team faces nationally ranked Arizona today, is back from a season on the brink, a season of setbacks and self-doubt.

"The Education of Steve Cleveland, now in its second year, has been swift and painful. He came to BYU full of grand plans.  He would, he vowed, make the Cougars an athletic, running team, same as the one he had at Fresno State.  He would have a diverse team (read: blacks and non-Mormons).  He would recruit junior college transfers for a short-term quick fix.  And then it backfired."

Tulane undefeated — who woulda thunk it? Not coach, players
The Deseret News (11/28/98)
http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,20000058,00.html?
http://www.sltrib.com/1998/nov/11281998/sports/63990.htm

"Try selling this scenario to Hollywood: Ivy League type team, perpetual losers, filled with a bunch of business majors, computer geeks, pre-med students, under-size players and second-year coach. Team ends up undefeated, conference champion with bowl bid and ranked ahead of traditional powerhouses like Nebraska and Michigan.  "I'm a very positive and optimistic person, but I would have never written that scenario," coach Tommy Bowden said after No. 11 Tulane wrapped up an 11-0 season in his second year. "Never."

"Neither would anyone else. The last time Tulane went undefeated was 1931, and here it is ending its year as one of four unbeaten teams in the nation. Add the 1998 Conference USA championship and a Liberty Bowl bid against BYU, and you have an amazing turnaround for a team that won just five games in the three years before Bowden took over last season."

Women's Volleyball advances to championship match with easy win over Rebels
The Deseret News (11/28/98)
http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,20000096,00.html?

"BYU coach Elaine Michaelis was worried when her Cougars ran into a smoking UNLV team on Friday night at the WAC Volleyball Tournament.  But after the match, she had a hard time explaining why.  The smoke pouring off the Rebels was nothing more than that of a lit match when thrown up against the BYU whirlwind that is the volleyball team as the Cougars put out the UNLV flames and blew the Rebels out of the tournament in three games, 15-12, 15-11, 15-6."

"Michael Wright scored 21 points and A.J. Bramlett added 17 points and 13 rebounds as Arizona (No. 15 ESPN/USA Today, No. 11 AP) escaped with a 78-74 overtime win over BYU on Saturday night.  The Wildcats (3-0) nearly suffered a shocking upset at the hands of the Cougars (1-3), who suffered a 21-point blowout loss to Auburn in their last game and are just a year removed from a one-win season.

"Arizona took its first lead on Bramlett's three-point play with 17:56 left.  The play was part of a 12-0 run during which the Wildcat defense held BYU scoreless for nearly four minutes.

"With 11:38 left, Arizona's Eugene Edgerson and Richard Jefferson became entangled at midcourt with BYU center Bret Jepsen, and as they separated, Jepsen took an elbow to the face and slumped to the floor. Jepsen suffered a concussion and was unconscious on the court for 20 seconds.  BYU's coaches insisted the elbow had been intentional, even though Edgerson claimed it wasn't. The already overwrought BYU crowd, psyched at the thought of an upset, became enraged and rained insults on Arizona's bench.

"Coach Lute Olson held Edgerson out for the rest of the game, but Jefferson was booed whenever he touched the ball. Security guards removed at least one abusive Cougar fan from the Marriott Center crowd of 13,846.

"The Cougars were down 60-51 with 5:27 to play, but BYU made a dramatic 16-4 run that featured three long 3-pointers for a 67-64 lead with 1:25 left in regulation.

"Terry's 3-pointer with a minute left tied the score, and after misses on both ends, Bramlett was fouled by Nathan Cooper with one second to play.  Bramlett winked at his bench before stepping up to the line, but with a frenetic crowd screaming at him, the senior center missed both free throws to force overtime.

"Arizona made an 8-2 run in overtime mostly on free throws as BYU tried to negate the Wildcats' size advantages with constant fouls. Jason Terry, who finished with 19 points, hit four free throws in the final minute as several desperation Brigham Young 3-pointers missed."
