I just read your missive, and I tried IBD's Website at 5PM (I went to
screen of day; investors corner; WON answers) and the only problem I had was
a script error (whatever that is) when I called up the screen of the day.

IMO you are looking at bad quotes due to the computer problems at NASDAQ. THQI closed at an all-time high but was quoted as losing $10 from the opening after 4PM NYT. Sure enough, it got fixed and is now quoted correctly. Caught me off guard until I looked at a bunch of quotes and noticed how screwy they were. No one was buying or selling stock at those quoted prices, trust me. It was another NASDAQ SNAFU, IMO. On 02:27 PM 6/29/01, Ian Said: >This is totally bizarre. The NASDAQ had some technical difficulties during the day, so they opened it for an extra hour. I was unable to enter trades of any sort during the hour. Those that could were able to manipulate prices by hitting highball 'after-hours' bids or asks. If they wanted the price down, they hit the bid. If they wanted the price up, they took out the ask. Check out 'SCOT' - a trade went through for $12.69 (2000 shares) for a $17 stock. I suspect that someone entered a 'market sell' order that they were planning to have executed on Monday morning. They put the order in at 10 minutes to 5:00, and it got filled by the lone bid at $12.69. The best however is sleepy little Frontier Financial. Someone likely entered a 'market buy' they wanted executed Monday morning, and ended up paying $49.99 for 1600 shares of a $26 stock. Many fallen fund favourites got bid up to carzy levels on high volumes - there were few real sellers to get in their way. I suspect some shorts took down some prices so they could unload lower as well. Even CSCO closed in the low $18's from a close in the $19's during regular hours. TBIO closed at $10.90 in regular hours, but will show a 5:00 close of $19! Alert traders with access were making a fortune taking advantage of the crazy price discrepancies shown on the ECN's. IMHO, it was all made much worse by this being window dressing day for the funds. Their NAV's are going to be really out of whack once the 5:00 closing prices get in the system. I guess the NASDAQ really is the wild and woolly west! As Ian was explaining, whoever was around (and was able to get through to the Nasdaq system from 4PM-5PM) was painting the tape however they wanted it to look. Most of these screwy trades happened with about 5-10 minutes to go by no coincidence. This is going to make for plenty of whacky Nasdaq charts. I will assume that the market makers open these stocks around where they "really" closed on Monday, but we'll see. On Friday, June 29, 2001, at 05:41 PM, Tim Fisher wrote: > P.S. One could have made money by putting lowball buys and highball sells in illiquid stocks that get filled by people who think they are putting in 'market' orders for Monday morning. Some people got fills in ACLNF for $30 that would not have filled during market hours. SCOT sold 2000 for $12.69 (a $17 stock). TBIO traded at $19 (a $11 stock). Alternatively, shorting the high-volume crazy runs has a huge probability of being successful - ITXC is a great example - a $5 stock that was pushed to $7 in the hour. Also, you could profit from selling existing positions in stocks that were being manically pushed - or buying shares in something you liked if it was dropping unnaturally. Traders who entered new positions are assuming that these stocks revert to their 'normal' prices on Monday in order for these profits to materialize. It is my opinion that that is a reasonable assumption - but who knows? If the NASDAQ uses the 5:00 prices as 'official' numbers, it will have a big effect on the quarter-ending NAV of funds. Go to finance.yahoo.com and get quotes on your favourite stocks to see the 5:00 closes - there are a handful that are more than 80% different from their 4:00 close. I agree that market makers should normalize things at the open Monday, but I bet there will still be some volatility. I wonder what redress people will have, who thought they were entering 'market' orders to be executed on Monday morning? Tim: The amazing thing about FLIR is that there were a lot of fairly large blocks changing hands in the $25+ range: Check this out for individual trades: http://charts-d.quote.com:443/993856133785?User=demo&Pswd=demo&DataType=DATA &Symbol=NASDAQ:FLIR&Interval=0&Ht=400&Wd=600&Display=0&Study=&Param1=0&Param 2=0&Param3=0&FontSize=9 Someone actually bought 20,000 shares for $25.17! I wonder if they were 'on stop' buys that converted to market orders at a certain price? I just called my brokers (Schwab and Bidwell). Both said that if you were trading on the NASDAQ during 4-5 PM, you were "on your own." Schwab did say they allow after-hours access, and treated the 4-5 PM period as such. I.e., they did not honor stop, limit or market orders placed during regular trading hours. Bidwell said the exact opposite (i.e. they treated 4-5PM as regular trading hours), however one of my stops which apparently would have been triggered by one of the screwy trades did not execute. Bidwell did say that this is not the expected future of the NASDAQ; they said it was open an extra hour due to "computer problems experienced during the day".
