Hi Mike,
I think you bring up an excellent point about the composition of =
industry groups. What is interesting is that, depending on which service =
you use, not only will each industry itself be slightly different, but =
each stock will be classified within those similar industries a little =
differently. BigCharts, WallStreetCity, S&P, Value Line, IBD. You name =
it, the parsing of companies is at the whim of the maker. I think what =
that means in the end is that it is important to use a consistent tool =
when evaluating industry movement.
I agree with you on another point you bring up, that is, the relative =
size of each industry is sometimes laughable. For example, in the tool I =
use, VectorVest, there is an industry called "Machinery/Printing." Up =
until recently, it had only 4 or 5 players, and announced =
merger/acquisitions had this group moving up in ranks near the top of =
the heap for seemingly forever. Once the mergers were completed, only =
one stock remained--CTCQ. But, in some ways that says something. =
Business is an ever evolving thing. For example, at one point in history =
there were 100 or so auto manufacturers, but time and maturation of the =
industry has morphed this group into only a few players. Similarly, it =
wasn't all that long ago that the IBD redid their industry groupings and =
added Fiber Optics groups. As late as January 2000, a company like JDSU =
was listed broadly with the "Telecom Equipment" group. Before that, =
changes included creation of new groups for Internet. So, I think at =
some point, industry groupings with smaller populations will be =
swallowed up into something else and larger groupings will get split =
into something more descriptive as industries grow.
More to your point, I think a tool that allows you to view both =
industries and sectors (broader groupings of industries) is extremely =
important. For something like CTCQ which I mentioned above, it's a great =
deal more useful to see the overall relative movement of it's sector, =
Machinery, which is composed of 7 different industries. Whether that =
tool is ClearStation (with which I'm not familiar), DGO, IBD, etc. is =
really a matter of preference. For me, since DGO would never add =
industry rankings, I was forced to add another tool, which I've learned =
to use effectively in my own analysis. I doubt I'll be paying the extra =
fees to DGO to do this. They are a few years too late in my book.

thought that many of IBD's groups were too small such that daily =
movements in=20
individual stocks had too much influence on the performance of the =
overall=20
group. In particular, looking at the % of stocks in a group hitting =
new highs=20
is quite uninteresting in a group with only 5 stocks.
But then, what IBD sacrifices in =
sensitivity, CS=20
probably sacrifices specificity.
I find CS to be quite useful. Anyone =
else out=20
there checked it out? Opinions?

Thought I'd jump in here. I've been reading this NG for several weeks =
now and am at last almost caught up. I've learned a good deal by =
following the discussion here. Particular kudos to the regulars (and I'm =
sure you know who you are).
I began following IBD and the CANSLIM style about two years ago during =
the heat of the tech bubble. I am certainly no expert at this, but I do =
enjoy fiddling around with it. I haven't developed enough confidence in =
CANSLIM or, probably more accurately, my mastery of the style to use it =
extensively with my own hard-earned money.
I decided to reply to this particular thread since I use Clearstation =
quite a lot. It sound as though their IG capabilities are quite similar =
to those of the new DGO beta feature. CS divides stocks into 102 =
industry groups and 12 sectors vs IBD/DGO's 197 groups. Frankly, I =
always thought that many of IBD's groups were too small such that daily =
movements in individual stocks had too much influence on the performance =
of the overall group. In particular, looking at the % of stocks in a =
group hitting new highs is quite uninteresting in a group with only 5 =
stocks.
But then, what IBD sacrifices in sensitivity, CS probably sacrifices =
specificity.

This feature just started today, and looks to be an excellent =
resource. You can input the symbol or name of a company, and it will =
return the group name, which you can then click on and get the list of =
every stock in the group (not just the ones in the books).
There is also a page with the top and bottom performing groups for =
the day, as well as the ones with the most stocks hitting new highs.
The entire list of 197 groups are also there, with their respective =
rankings. And if you have the patience, you can click on each one and =
get the list of the stocks in each, rather than buying the book every =
six months. And I haven't even checked all the resources yet.
Any DGO subscribers that are trying the beta version, and like group =
RS info, I expect it will be useful. I might even pay for it, if it's =
not too expensive.

For Industry Group followers, you'll like this new
service, which looks like will be an extra charge when
beta test is over. Lists highest and lowest ranked
IGs for the day with % change vs. 5 days ago vs. Jan
1. Also compares current ranking with 1, 4, 13
weeks-ago rankings. Can see list of all stocks in an
IG and change order of list by any of 5 major IBD
rankings. Shows DGO chart of any IG. Plus more...
