A 50 ma on a daily chart uses the last 50 days of data. On a weekly chart it uses the last 50 weeks of data. On an hourly chart it uses the last 50 hours of data. Monthly uses the last 50 months of data. So whenever you are looking at a chart look at the type of chart(weekly, daily, hourly, etc.)and that is what the MA is going off of. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-canslim@lists.xmission.com [mailto:owner-canslim@lists.xmission.com] On Behalf Of rolf hertenstein Sent: Sunday, December 15, 2002 3:19 PM To: canslim@lists.xmission.com Subject: [CANSLIM] Bigchart bug or am I statistically challenged? I was playing with some different MAs on Bigcharts (e.g., 50, 150, 200 day SMAs and EMAs). For the same chart period (e.g., 3 years) and the same MA (e.g., 50-day SMA) I noticed different curves leading to ultimately different current MA price (e.g., $33 vs. $37). It looks like they calculate the MA differently for daily vs. weekly - perhaps using numbers for each of 50 days for the daily and for each of 10 weeks for weekly in the case of 50 DMA. That's not right is it? My noodle tells me a 50 DMA is a 50 DMA, i.e, calculated from 50 days' of data. Am I nuts (not in general, but specifically on this question)? Thanks!
