Total was 161, down from 200 the prior week. And it was "slim pickin's" indeed. Scrolling thru 161 potential CANSLIM stocks in the space of less than an hour tends to create an overall impression, and mine this week was that if any stock you own isn't already seriously extended, why do you still own it? Doesn't mean I'll sell any that are not running up, but does mean I'll go back and look at them harder. For the new members, this list is culled from the DGO (Daily Graphs Online, a WON publication) list of stocks that are (1) in the DG books; (2) have both RS and EPS of 80 or better; and (3) were at or within 5% of their 12 month high during the prior week. Since this is a subscription service, I am not allowed to post the entire list, but I do scroll thru all the charts and post those that to my eye present a constructive chart suggesting they are worth further review, research or watching. In no way is this list intended as a "buy" or "hold" list. Terms: CUP & HANDLE - see HTMMIS BASE - see HTMMIS LLUR - for a chart showing "lower left, upper right" progression - not exactly CANSLIM but fits, the consistency of the slope becomes "the base" FUNNEL - like a cup, but steeper and briefer STAIRCASE - just like it seems After the runup we've seen in NASDAQ in the past two months, it's not unreasonable for a stock to take a breather. We just finished the last "triple witching" of the millennium; we are a week away from the traditional "santa claus" rally period; we have nearly completed the typical "tax related selling" period; and are only a few weeks away from the period when many get their annual bonuses and/or pay raises (I got my bonuses in Nov, so it's already invested, and still waiting for word on a pay raise). All of this spells V O L A T I L I T Y !!! Consequently, finding "tame" stocks that will cooperate and give you a five or six week base is even more difficult than usual. The only ones I found were all under some form of a buyout, so check any you find carefully. Here's what I was left with from this weeks list: Basing, or acting like it wants to base: TQNT, NTAP, LGTO, CREE, DAKT (low PE), RSYS (long base even after a split), RMDY, LTRE, BVF, GIC, CSCO, EMC, ORBK, EMBX, BBOX, CVG, APSG (but with some neg implications including a qtr ago drop in earnings and a low PE, insider sells, and good earnings forecast, why isn't this stock running up???), WLSN (long base which should be researched), MAN Some others I saw: AMM - wanted to comment separately on this one. My first reaction was to the chart, since that's what I was looking at. I saw a breakout from a decent c&h. It was only after a minute or so of studying the chart that I looked at the price, then the symbol, and realized it was a small cap, low priced (under $5) stock already on my watch list (I haven't had the time lately to pay much attention to my "owned" stocks, much less my watch list). NICE - would be a nice c&h except for the handle forming too high - chart distortions like this are not uncommon when the trend is so strong - I have made money on these, but you must keep a tight watch and sell trigger finger on it QLGC - possible c&h forming Tom Worley stkguru@netside.net chat with me at ICQ # 5568838 get ICQ software at http://www.icq.com/icqhomepage.html - - ------------------------------ Date: 18 Dec 1999 09:48:46 -0800 From: "Tim Fisher" Subject: [CANSLIM] Wireles stock list My mom wants a wireless that is not too extended. Jack Lykins - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ----------------------------------------- It has been a few months since we last sent you email regarding our PatternSmasher software. We were tied up with the development of version 2.0, which is now available. One of the major enhancements is a brand new search engine which can now scan hundreds of stocks in minutes rather than a couple of hours as was the case with version 1. Also, thanks to some enhancements to the patternbot builder, PatternSmasher now has a tremendous amount of power to find complex patterns such as the cup-with-handle pattern popularized by William O’Neil of Investors Business Daily. An example of two cup-with-handle patterns found this evening can be viewed at the following URL: http://www.realtraders.cnchost.com/setups/12.15.99/default.htm Be aware that these are potential setups and would be triggered as the price advanced above the handle formation with increasing volume. PatternSmasher is the only software program that can systematically search for complex patterns. The only other way to get the same results is to train an assistant to scan through chart after chart looking for specific patterns. Thanks for the "heads up" on the Marder article as well as the Tradehard site in general. Being new to CANSLIM trading the article and the "lesson articles" have been a great help in understanding terms, etc. Good call on MSFT. I wish I had invested in it. Any recommendations about entering the market at this point? I was just "stopped" out (with a gain) of my few stocks and am concerned about re-entering with the holiday and new year approching. Any thoughts? (I don't like the sidelines). I'm also new to the CANSLIM process and I'm just loarning how important these pivot points are. I've set a buy stop at the pivot point and that way when the stock goes through that point the order becomes a market order. In WON's book he describes making several purchases. One at the pivot point and several others as the price goes up 2 or 3%. Is it possible to summit serveral buy orders on the same stock at different prices? How has this worked out for members of this group? Do you buy a block at once or do you make several buys within a few percent of each other?
