Readers of indy will be able to meet the editors at Heroes Convention [June 13-15] in Charlotte, North Carolina and Dragon*Con [June 26-29] in Atlanta, Georgia. The editors will be at the shows promoting the just released indy #18 featuring articles on cartoonists Jim Woodring, Jessica Abel, Jason Lutes, Tom Hart, and Jon Lewis. "We see this as a way to get more direct interaction with our readers," said Editor Jeff Mason, "sure we get mail about the magazine and that helps us determine the type of stuff we cover in indy, but this more personal contact is a lot more effective." Summer is the busiest season for the comic book industry and this season should prove to be the biggest in a number of years, "I am tremendously optimistic as we are just now seeing signs of an upturn in the comic book industry, especially for independent comics," said Mason, "I expect this Summer to be a time of revitalization for everyone and the Summer's big comic book shows will be the benchmarks for the rest of the year." indy Magazine is a quarterly magazine covering the world of alternative comic books with news, interviews, reviews, and articles. Alternative Press, Inc. also publishes Xeric winner Jon Lewis' Spectacles; Jim Harrison & Dan Stepp's Humongous Man; Ed Brubaker's At The Seams and Detour comics, and Steve Weissman's Tykes and Yikes comics. This year we've gone one better with the SPX Comic, a companion anthology showcasing the very best in independent, alternative, and self-published cartoonists. The SPX Comic will be solicited nationally this July for shipment to retailers early September, and all profits go to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Not just another "con" comic, this 128 page anthology features new work by over 40 of the artists attending this year's Expo, with flip covers by Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows) and James Sturm (The Revival). It's an excellent sampler of what's happening in small press comics today, including comics by Ed Brubaker (Lowlife), Roberta Gregory (Naughty Bits), Marc Hempel (Tug and Buster), Linda Medley (Castle Waiting), Jason Lutes (Berlin), Charles Vess (Book of Ballads and Sagas), and Mark Wheatley (Radical Dreamer). This is a comic you're going to read again and again. The SPX Comic embodies everything that makes the Small Press Expo such a unique and enjoyable event. Not only will readers enjoy work by many of their favorite small-press artists, but they're sure to discover new favorites along the way. From angst-filled autobio to tough-guy shoot-em-ups, the SPX Comic presents the broad scope of today's indy marketplace. Along with over 100 pages of new comics, the book contains articles and information about the Expo, the International Comics and Animation Festival, current cases of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Friends of Lulu activities, and nominees for the first annual Ignatz Awards, which will be awarded at a special banquet during SPX97. The Small Press Expo is a collaboration involving every level of the industry. Comics have been donated free of charge by the artists, and profits go to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Insight Studios of Baltimore, MD is producing the book pro bono. Diamond, SyCo, and other firms are distributing the book to retailers at 50% off, and Quebecor is printing the book on special terms. SPX applauds these gestures of support for diversity and innovation in today's marketplace. Given the sponsors and purpose of this event, we expect retailers across the nation will put their full support behind the SPX Comic. The SPX Comic retails for $2.95 and will be distributed in July catalogues for shipment in early September. Limited advertising space is available at reasonable rates. The Small Press Expo will be held September 19-21 in Silver Spring, Maryland, just outside the nation's capital. For more information about the SPX Comic or the Expo itself, contact Chris Oarr at (301) 565-8340 or email him at coarr@erols.com. For immediate release: Contact: Jeff Mason - Phone: 352-373-6336 - E-Mail: jrm@grove.ufl.edu Ed Brubaker's new series debuts in October Detour is Brubaker's new continuing comic book series Gainesville, FL, June 25, 1997: The October debut of Harvey and Eisner Award nominated cartoonist Ed Brubaker's new series, Detour, promises to be a landmark for this acclaimed creator as he explores exciting new directions. Featured in this first issue is "Life on the Fault Line" about a man who struggles with his hated roommates and the dystopian world around him as he tries vainly to cling to his moral standards. This hilarious black comedy seamlessly blends the real and the unreal to concoct a frightening vision of the not too distant future. Brubaker also delivers "Get Out of My Head", a poignant piece about a high school girl whose obsession with a cherished zine and its creator has gone a little bit too far. Ed Brubaker's work on his popular series Lowlife as well as his projects for DC's Vertigo and Dark Horse have garnered him Harvey and Eisner Award nominations and a lot of critical acclaim over the years. Now Brubaker breaks through to a new level as both the art and writing in this new series are a big leap forward from his previous work as he progresses from the autobiographical to a lot more exploratory fiction. "It will have all of the elements that people loved about Lowlife but will have a lot more going on behind the scenes, a lot more humor, and a lot more experimentation," says creator Brubaker, "try to imagine if Buddy Bradley were written by Philip K. Dick.". "Detour" is an ongoing comic book series debuting October at a retail price of $2.95. The official Ed Brubaker Web site is: http://www.indyworld.com/brubaker Alternative Press, Inc. also publishes indy Magazine, the guide to alternative comic books; Jim Harrison & Dan Stepp's Humongous Man; Jon Lewis' Spectacles comic series, and Steve Weissman's Tykes and Yikes comics.
