From: Robert M DeLorenzo Subject: (cww) Helicopter Sim for Mac!? Date: 05 Jul 1998 13:47:53 +0000 Greetings all; I am looking for a top quality military helicopter flight sim for the Mac, the ones I have located (Apache, Commanche, Hind) all appear to be for PC only. Does anyone know of a good one for the Mac? Or have I missed something? TIA Bob D -- I don't know but I've been told if you never slow down you never grow old... I'm pretty sure you can find NovaLogic on the Web. I had the Apache demo for the Mac at one time. I also had the Hind demo. It was the best of the three. Strout recently put out a call for assistance with a new and exciting project. He plans to develop a game framework around Apple's QuickDraw 3D technology "to make coding such games easier, faster, and less error-prone." "To keep it fairly general, I'm planning to design and test as I go with four demos/mini-games in mind: 1.Tanks: drive around in a large arena, shooting at other tanks (e.g. Battlezone). 2.Dogfight: fly a fighter jet or spaceship, shooting at other ships. 3.Dungeon: run around a castle, temple, etc., followed by a roving camera 4.Breakout 3D: like classic Breakout, but in a 3D volume. "The framework won't be limited to these genres, but I figure that this set is diverse enough to force the framework to be general. These would also all serve as good starting points for more complex games. "I'd like to find some additional programmers to assist in this effort. In particular, it'd be nice to have somebody take charge of each demo, so that I can concentrate on the core tools. "All work will be done on a strictly volunteer basis, and when we're done the C++ source code will be in the public domain (or perhaps GPL'd). The point is to assist the Mac gaming community, by providing tools which will increase the quality and quantity of Mac games. If you'd like to help, or just make a comment or two on the approach, please let me know!" If you or someone you know is interested in assisting Strout on what has the potential to be a landmark event in QuickDraw 3D game development, please contact him (jstrout@ucsd.edu). Another is to draw attention to net capable flight sims to get more of them. In an effort to do more of that, the ladders are to be upgraded by adding a message board to each of the ladders for that specific flight sim. The first ladder to have this done is the Skyfighters ladder. This is already up and pretty much ready to use. I still have some tweaking to do and welcome any suggestions. You can find the ladder at: http://www.xmission.com/~thon/ladders.sf/sf.html As to what can be posted there....I expect common sense and courtesy. Basically the same things that are expected on the CWW and FSCombat mail lists. Opposing viewpoints are ok as long as they don't involve personal attacks. It is ok to advocate the use of one IRC channel over another....or even a different medium such as Kali on the message board. I don't expect anyone to advocate anything other then what they believe or can support. I would hope that the focus would be devoted to that specific flight sim that the board is for. It will serve as a Command & Staff school for people wanting to start a squadron and a a cyber flight school for those new to flight sims and wanting to learn to fly online. As it currently stands, the 3rd FW is a non denominational training source. It will help both Mac and PC users and provide training for any flight sim there are instructors for. The intent is to serve as a cental clearing point for the instruction by locating those persons and squadrons that want to provide training and bringing them together with those that desire it. Individuals wishing to train will be formed up under the command structure of the 3FW in order to give coherence. Squadrons that participate will operate as autonomous units maintaining their own identity. It is hoped that the 3FW will provide a pool for recruits and even form new squadrons from those that request the training, both command and online flight. The 3FW has been suffering from neglect for several months now and the cobwebs are starting to be brushed off. To see the current structure, check out the web page. My name is Elton Aguilar, most people know me as "Echo" on IRC EFNET #Hornet. Personally speaking, I feel that "F/A-18 Hornet" is, undoubtedly, the best flight sim available to the Mac, and now PC's. I started with the original version 1.0 four years ago and have upgraded every time... including the recent 3Dfx-enhanced Hornet Korea. (I love those new graphics. They have added a whole new realism to sim flying without compromise to the flight modeling.) I've been flying competitively for almost 2 years against others h2h on the Official CMAW competition ladder and various tournaments. I've flown H2, H3, and HKorea on LAN's and over IPRemote using the Appletalk format connected to 1, 2, and 3 pilots. Our experience is that 1 vs. 1 is the most stable. Connecting to 2 or 3 others (total 4) causes problems, such as, net splits, drop outs, and lags. Over the years, it was thought that connecting more than two over the internet was a problem with IPRemote connected to an Appletalk Remote Server. It turns out that even on a local area network, local talk and ethernet, the same problems were occurring. According to Gabe Mares, a TCP/IP patch has been written for Hornet Korea. However, from what I understand (and I may wrong) there were conflicts with the latest version of MacOS 8.1 that needed to be worked out. I think I speak for all who have the same regards. I've posted this message on the CWW listservers as a petition and a plea by me and all those who may have a similar interest. They may or may not wish to forward this on to you. I have used them and they work but they don't last. Eventually they warp/bend on the end that connects to the out cable and have to be replaced. I'm on my 2nd one, the first lasted 9 months and all it did was set there. I didn't mess with it till I started getting odd effects on the monitor. It is a viable option tho. Just don't blame the card if odd effects start happening, check the adaptor] Hands On with Voodoo 2: You'll never go back by Ben Wilson bwilson@maccentral.com July 25, 5:00 p.m. ET When the UPS truck pulled up the MacCentral office with a small package from Micro Conversions, we could hardly contain ourselves. We ripped open the package to find a new Voodoo 2 Game Wizard, and immediately began to install the new card. The hardware installation couldn't have been simpler. We were installing the card on a Power Mac G3/233 desktop, which has a very easy to open case. We inserted the card into an available PCI slot and hooked the pass-through cable (included in the package) from the video source on the G3/233 into the Game Wizard. We then plugged the monitor into the other port on the Game Wizard. Micro Conversions even included a VGA to DB-15 adapter so you can use PC monitors with the card. Software installation was even easier. All that was required was the dragging of a 3Dfx library to the system folder, and restarting the system. The system ran without a hitch, and there were no bugs or anomalies we could detect. The first 3Dfx game we fired up was a MacCentral favorite, Quake. The first thing that stunned us was the ability to run the game at 800x600 resolution in 3Dfx mode; an ability not possesed by previous Mac 3Dfx cards. The second thing [that shocked us was the lush look, and smoothness of the 3Dfx graphics. RAVE simply cannot compare. The third amazing thing about the Voodoo 2 technology was the incredible frame-rates. At 800x600, we easily achieved frame-rates of 30 frames per second, which is higher than previous Mac 3Dfx cards reached at 640x480 resolutions. Running the Voodoo 2 card at 640x480 topped 60 frames per second. Once you've seen Quake run at these resolutions, with this speed, and looking this good, you'll never go back to an ordinary graphics chip. In the coming weeks, we'll test other 3Dfx enabled games with the new Game Wizard, and provide you with complete results. These will include Unreal, Myth 2, and more. For now, we have some screen shots of Quake running on the Game Wizard. But first, a quick warning: Once you look at these shots, you'll probably want to order a Game Wizard for yourself.
