The DR400z should be called the DR400L - for late. I sold my 350 in Nov. expecting them to be released in Dec. as originally suggested by my dealer. They have yet to show but I did finally get word from American Suzuki, after personally demanding to speak to the VP NA Sales, that the bikes are in Los Angeles now, will be allocated to dealers this week and will show up in the showrooms next week. I would imagine that every bike is already spoken for so you should see the bikes out and about real soon - at least here on the Wst Coast. The DRZ400 and DRZ400E are the first to be released with the DRZ400S showing up in March. All information I have read (which unfortunately is not much) is very positive. Additionally, I have had the privilege of speaking with Rodney Smith about the bike and he loves it. Suzuki has hired Mike Kudrowski out of retirement to race the bike in the GNCC series. Like all new products, I am sure it will take a year to work out the bugs but I think Yamaha has paved the way and this bike should be a good one out of the blocks. I have heard it produces 48HP out of the box. I have also not heard very many good things about the suspension other than they took the suspension of a 97 RM250 - I don't know if this is good or bad?. Specs indicate the kick start version will weigh 248lbs. and the electric start version 262 lbs. I have also heard the the electric start version will offer a kick start kit for about $250 so you can remove the starter. The kick start version will not be convertable. It has been really frustrating because the dealers either have no clue about these bikes or have been instructed not to talk until they are released. Regarding cost - this is the least expensive bike in its category. A Yamaha WR400 will run you $6700 out the door and are tough to find. A KTM 400SXC will run about the same. The Honda XR400 is about the same price as the DR ($6000) but its air cooled and will likely be decommissioned next year by a water pumper. A good used DR350 will run about $2500 but when you add a pipe, a Vortex box, suspension work, carb jetting, sprokets and new tires, your into it for $4000 min and its still a 350 with a rapid declining value. The net result, I should have not sold my 350 until the 400 arrived that way I wouldn't be riding the pine during the best time of the year. For those who love to turn the wrench as much as they love to ride (me included) the 350 will remain a shop favorite for a while longer and so this may be your best investment. For me, if the 400 dosn't show next week, I am going out and buying the WR because I just cant wait for that electric start model any longer. If you're out of this preload range it means spring rate is too hard or too soft for you! - - If you have all these parameters correct, you can begin adjusting (if needed) compression damping by adjusting the valve spring preload or the oil level, and rebound with oil viscosity. I'm pretty happy with the standard adjustment, I just use to change the spring rate depending on the terrain I ride (I have the triple rate springs and I'm near the 170lbs limit), and I use to change quite frequently the oil (each 50-100 hours dirt ride). So far so good, I think Emulators are a good deal for DR350 ... if it comes along with a good shock (I use öhlins)!!! I hope these helps, have a good ride. Finally found a centerstand for the DR650SET as well as the excellent Laser Pro Duro stainless exhaust. The centerstand is made by Rikki Cross, an Italian company. I'm ordering it from M & P in Britain for $106.50 + $62.24 shipping. They say it will take 3 weeks for delivery...right...we'll see. I'm also going to try a GIVI A-601 windscreen. Fred is shipping me a Factory jet kit and I'm getting a K & N filter from Tim Bernard. Tim says my racks will be here in a week, I've already received the GIVI panniers and topcase. I removed the rear rack last night and am sending it to him with my Top of the Line Rack for fitting and powder coating to match the racks. Fred sent me the IMS tank. Corbin should arrive any day. Bike is in a million pieces. I'm going to drop the forks and shock and send them to Bob Bell at Precision Concepts.
