I've done the same things, for the same reasons -- removed everything but the piece of curved metal that mounts underneath the front sprocket guard. I only ride with boots, and I can't imagine how a part of a stiff leather boot could possibly get caught in the front sprocket area, even if I tried to stick it in there. In my mind, the main danger of the chain is the master link opening up and the chain whipping around to take my leg off. I check that link diligently, and replace it at least once a season. (I know that a lot of the DRs have a continuous chain, but a larger rear sprocket often necessitates a new, longer chain.) My 92 DR350S is almost ready to roll, but I'm having a bit of a problem. After warming and riding for a while, the bike idles at like 5000 rpm when put into neutral. Also, the rpms stay high when the throttle is let off after revving, even in gear. The throttle is not sticking (checked that first). The top of the airbox has been mostly cut out (previous owner). We think we may have diagnosed the problem, but we're not sure yet. The pilot screw (not the pilot jet) on the outside of the carb should have a little dinky o-ring at the top and that was missing along with the washer that pushes against it. Could this little part be causing my difficulties or do you guys think something else is going on... Thanks for yor advice. Jon ALSO! That is a suspect thing and should be corrected because it can be pulling air from the area that the o'ring is supposed to be sealing off. I wouldn't worry about taking them off unless all you are going to do is run up and down the interstate. I took them off my DRZ400S with no ill effects--although your 650 may show a little vibration--since it has a bigger engine. I have a BMWF650 which I put Acerbis handguards on and thought of getting rid of the weights. But it spends most of its time on the road covering some pretty serious miles, so I left them on it.
