The ultimate, in addition to new springs front and rear, is to upgrade the valving in your suspension -- you'll add plushness, won't bottom, and you'll keep the tire on the ground a lot more. I'd recommend Gold Valves from RaceTech. New springs, front and rear, definitely Kouba links (if you do nothing else). You'll love your suspension, which is traditionally one of the major weak points on the DRs. You'll end up with suspension superior to anything rolling out off a factory line (including the new DRZs), custom tuned to you and your riding style. This package would probably run you $500 in parts; the labor can easily be done yourself if you're halfway decent with "mechanical things". I'd be happy to lend advice; I have a write-up on rear shock work (probably the most difficult part of the upgrade). I've been lurking on this list for quite awhile. Every so often I interject something of relevance, but most often I just read the mail. Why? Because I don't own a DR. At this point in my life I'm a KLR guy. It's been a great bike for me... BUT, after reading post after post of Jessie's excellent, patient and informative advice - I am feeling compelled to buy a DR... ANY DR... just so I can ask him a question. =-) Jessie, your wealth of knowledge, and tireless ability to share are simply awesome! Maybe some day I can ask you something too. lol... I know, just what everyone wants to talk about! Yesterday I replaced the stock header pipe with a White Bros. on my DR350. A previous owner had opened up the airbox and the last owner installed a Supertrapp muffler. Plug color seemed okay before with gray over the electrodes and some black around the rim of the plug. Have had no problems with it running, once I get it started! First start of day is a pain, but easy after that. My question then is will I have to rejet the carb after installing this new header pipe? Have not had the carb off yet, so I don't know what is in there. I am coming up short on time right now since I installed it for Moab next week and now I am thinking of the carb and jetting.... good timing! I went to my local Suzuki dealership and I purchased a 2000 DRZ400S! I love my 95 DR350SE, but I just could not resist. I figured that with all the modifications I was planning for the bike; (Vortex airbox, suspension, changing the bike over to all black body parts, etc.), that I would be investing a reasonable amount of $$$ anyways, so why not just go the distance. The reason I am telling the list this, is because now I will be selling my 95 DR350SE. I live in Burlington, Vt, so I assume this would only apply to East-Coasters. The bike is in good condition, and runs smooth as silk. It has 4,900 miles on it. I just put on brand new Pirelli MT 21's front and back. Also included in the deal is the Suzuki factory repair manual. The bike was recently serviced and inspected by my local Suzuki dealer less than 500 miles ago. I would be looking to get around $2,200, but would be willing to field offers. My DR was stock for a while and I thought it was very uninspiring to ride. I put the 435cc kit in it and it's a whole new bike, and I have a LOT more fun on it than I did when it was stock. So I guess the answer to your "why bother?" question is that, for some people, its worth the $$$ and trouble to modify their bike, for whatever reason. Different strokes for different folks. I was reading an older website for the DR350 when I read the dual sporters had a priming position on their fuel petcock. I then remembered my old Triumph Bonneville and tickling the Amal carbs before starting. It occurred to me the float bowl might not be full, so I now go out and drain some fuel from the float bowl before the first start of the day and kick start it with about 3 kicks with the choke on. I have no problems and do not have to do anything out of the ordinary for the rest of the day. Works slicker 'n snot and I have also found the more I drain (just a couple ounces is fine) the easier it is to start. the main idea is to drain until no more air bubbles come out of the bowl. Well, that's my two cents worth for today and what works for me ...
