These moves would be the most economical when considering level of improvement vs. $ invested. You are brave to do MX on a DR. Yes, it's possible to dramatically improve action (but costly) with RM or RMX components; relatively easy to do - minor machining & header rerouting required. Mine's been this way for a year now, F/R, and I can't say enough about it - you have to experience it to believe how good it can be. There's not a thing yet that it won't take oh-so-well, though it ran over one grand for the mods alone, so don't expect to keep your household well fed afterwards :-/ John You guys have some great advice. The Kouba Links sound like an inexpensive fix for what seems to be a big problem. What would complement this for the front end.I love the bike but it handles like the handle bars are wet noodles and I have a flat on the rear. Would trying to find a set of USD RM forks be an impossible and expensive feat? I would like to be able to ride this thing on a mx track for fun if I wanted to. If possible loossen the carberator drain screw. Make sure that the fuel petcock is turned off. Allow all of the old fuel in the carberator to drain, then tighten the drain screw. Open the fuel petcock, kick the engine through. It should start after a few kicks (or cranks if you are looking at an electric start model). How do you like it? Is it reliable? What are the best & worst things about owning / riding it? The roads in & around my town really s*ck (about 75% paved), so I'm looking at a light dualsport for commuting & general running around. TIA! He was able to jump any and every jump he found.I on the other hand was busy trying to relocate my arms in there sockets after bottoming out the suspension after every jump.I am so confused today about my options on making this bike have the ablitity to do what I want.( a little history) I ended up with a 95DR350s that had been stripped down to nothing but the headlight and a 90 DR250 that was done the same. I bought them from a guy who was working in Dallas on one of my job sites who was in a bind and was heading back home in south Texas. So being a nice guy I helped him out. I was looking for a bike, but was looking at the YZ400.Now I've got two bikes and neither are exactly what I want, but both are really nice bikes.HELP!! Do I suck it up and and beef up this 350 or do I cut my losses and get what i really feel will do what I want.I trust you guys opinions. I have a 90 350s model and have had the stock shock and forks revavled. Major difference until I started getting faster on the trails and in racing. Now, I have the Progressive shock and Race Tech prepped forks. Very nice set up, however, this is not YZ,KX,CR,RM and I wouldn't try clearing any double or triple jumps with it. Aggressive trail riding is another story. I usually run ride around Baldwin, Mi. and the guys I run with are on KX & CR 500's. I have impressed them with how my street legal bike will hang with these motocross bikes. Another thing I like is when they are worried about running out of gas, I barely use any gas compared to them. I have even upgraded the front and rear suspension, but I can't come close to riding the DR lilke I did the KTM and ATK. I'm not saying the DR isn't a good bike, I love mine and have enjoyed every minute I've spent behind the bars riding it 11k miles. It's just maybe not up to what an high level intermediate or advanced rider can throw at it. Kurt responds: Hi Doug, I'm not sure it is much more than what I call the dualsport continuum. On one end you have the BMW-GS (mostly highway, some fire roads, etc.) - on the other end the most radical dirt oriented bikes..probably dirt bikes with baja kits and then you have everything in between. So, comparing a DR350S to an ATK 605 should produce differences in off-road capabilities. Every bike is a compromise, the tweaking that we do is simply trying to change the performance slightly within the continuum... The competition for the DR200SE is the venerable and highly regarded Yamaha XT-225 Serow, the new Kaw Super Sherpa, and the Yamaha TW-200. Stock, the DR has about a gallon more fuel than the others. They all have electric start. The DR is a little heavier than the XT. The DR may be the best buy used as it doesn't hold its value like the Serow. The TW has been around a long time and many people really love them. In the north or cold climates, the XT has the reputation of not having enough battery to fire the beast and get it started. I would say if you are buying new to check them all out and buy the one you like best. My inclination would be to go for the XT. If price is an object, a non-electric sleeper is the XR-250L made from 91-95. They were not popular because they were soft suspended and had a low seat height, perfect for a mild dual sporter and commuter. They have tons of power and can be had really cheap.
