From: Catlin Subject: (dragon-oper) A Whole Bunch 'o' Stuff Date: 19 May 1997 22:06:53 -0600 (MDT) Well, we're in! :) :) :) Annd since it's quite late, this'll be to the point... Now, down to the nasty business stuff. ;) Theri: I need a password for you and a list of addresses you'd like O:lines for. Also, I subscribed you to this list as 'theri@dal.net', but if you'd like the mail going elsewhere let me know. :) Morph: You're subscribed to this list as morph@voyager.abac.com, let me know if you need that changed. :) AK: you're on from whatevertheheck address you were on before. See above. :) Bots: (No, there aren't any on the list!) The policy for dragon is that we will allow them, as long as they are registered and not breaking the general DALnet rules (ie warez, flooding, kiddie porn). Don't suppose anybody wants to volunteer to keep track of these things, would they? *beg* *plead* This would require getting emails from the web page (when we get one up), keeping a list, adding/deleting bots from the aop list on #dragonbots, and sending form emails either rejecting or accepting registrations. That's not tooo much, right? O:) Other O:lines: I think I've gone over this with everyone before, but I subscribe to the "Primary/Secondary O:line" school of thought. :) If you are anything that might be considered a "Primary" on another server, please move to secondary there. (Talk to me if you have problems with this, please. :) This List: If you reply to an email a user sent to this list, please cc: the reply to the list so that everyone will know that it's already been replied to. Accounts on dragon: if you'd like one, please let Myst know. Please don't run anything liable to take up a whole lot of memory or cpu. (The new httpd is not in working order yet, but will shortly.) The ircd.conf: Myst also has access to this. He won't be making changes unless it's an emergency, though. Well, that's everything I can think of... for now. :) Catlin PS--gosh I hope this list is working ;) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: FireMyst Subject: Re: (dragon-oper) A Whole Bunch 'o' Stuff Date: 20 May 1997 19:43:38 -0600 (MDT) On Mon, 19 May 1997, Catlin wrote: > Well, we're in! :) :) :) Yay! > Annd since it's quite late, this'll be to the point... (Well, ok, not quite *that* many, but you get the picture... ;) If you'd like some ircop-ish experiences, I'd suggest hanging out on help channel (#dalnethelp, #help_channel, #mirc, etc) and answering questions--this is about as close as you can get. It can be argued that Internet Service Providers don't get the money for the buck, considering the bandwith used on a large network such as DALnet (the dragon administration had to provide the computer themselves, the ISP only provided the link), but they do have some benefits. First, most servers have a blurb in their Message of the Day saying "check out our hosts web site, http://blah", which every user connecting to that server sees, possibly bringing more users. Also, many users on an ISP want the ISP to run an IRC server, so the users can have a server that's close to them net-wise, providing a pretty much lag-free server. Just keeping up with the wants and demands of the users (sometimes ;). > Keep up good work. Since most mass message scripts avoid sending messages to IRCops, we rely heavily on users reporting mass messages to us. If you get one, you may want to go to #dragonrealm to report it, or find an IRCop on the server you're on (typing /trace should show you if there are any IRCops active on the server you're on). The IRCop should see that the mass messager is disconnected from DALnet. Alternately, you can set your usermode to +i (invisble). This should keep mass messagesr from finding you. It would be pretty pointless to just have it on, as it doens't do very much other than to tell ME {and me alone, not the chan} about events going on at the time. Would this still be needed to be registered on your servers? What exactly is a clone bot? Do you mean I can't run myself, and a bot at the same time (mind you, I only need to know this if you consider my simple script a bot)? Otherwise, what exactly is a clone bot? I rarely clone myself, but sometimes I'm asked for technical help from a mIRC 5.0 and above user. I personally prefer 4.72, so that's what I use, but to help the others out, I clone myself and get out my 5.0 version of mIRC instead. Would these short occasions be a violation of your IRC rules (DALNET rules, IRC server rules, or whatever) policy? I can certainly kill out my mIRC 4.72, start up 5.0, help the person out, then kill 5.0 to restart my 4.72 again, if that is required. It's a big hassle, but not a problem to avoid causing problems, or breaking rules. Would it still be considered unauthorized cloning, if my 4.72 ME, and my 5.0 temp clone, were connected to IRC on different servers for the techie help? Oh, if you know standard DALNET rules regarding these questions, and not just your specific server policy here, that would be appreciated information as well. Please specify which answers pertain to just your server, and which are DALNET (or IRC if there are all encompassing IRC rules) policies. Thank you very much for your time in answering my questions. As far as I know, this is DALnet policy. A clone bot is another copy of yourself, running from the same address. However having just one copy of yourself should not be a problem. The true reason behind no clones is the fact that they are used to flood other users and generally cause trouble. Services helps us find these problems, but two clients from the same address will not alert Services. I do not see any problem having two of yourself at certain times. I have done this myself, and never had any problems.
