Dragon's policy is that trading child pornography is against the server rules, as it is for all of DALnet. Channels that participate in such activites are subject to closure. I also know it is a federal crime to either distribute porn to minors, or of minors. Both crimes have stiff penalties. (New to dragon, that is, not Operhood.) LadyFizz, VincentVega, and FingerTrick have been added as primary O:line holders (FingerTrick brings our ex-Admin total to 3, so I'd say we can safely pride ourselves with having the most ex-Admins ;) SaTiRe has been added as a primary o:line. Simon may become an official primary o:line as well, I just havne't gotten a chance to talk to him yet. (Simon is on this list, SaTiRe isn't. I've made it optional for o:'s) Also, Ryo-oh-ki has been upgraded from o: to O: :) Annnnnddd... for your enjoyment is a summary of the 'rules' such as they are on dragon.... Oper Policy: I subscribe to the "Primary/Secondary" Oper theory... basically, if you are a Parimary Oper on dragon, you aren't listed on other motds or included in a big way in operation of other servers (CFOs, etc). You can of course have as many backup/secondary O's as you want. :) Web Page: Yes, we have one though parts (ie, the Oper pages) are waaay out of date. The main page, bot section ,and 'history of dragon' are current. The page is at http://dragon.dal.net (aka http://dragon.xmission.com). Bots: Bots are alllowed as long as they are registered and follow DALnet's and the server's specific rules (which are on the web page). Bots are registered on a form on the page, forms are mailed to this list, and registration is handled by bots@dragon.xmission.com (aka FireMyst and AndrewK). Registered bots are aops on #dragonbots, so check there if you need to know if something's ok. CFOs: There hasn't been one since dragon relinked. :) We don't hold a server vote or anything like that, but I'd love to hear any comments you have, on the list, in email, online, wherever. I will make the final decision, but if I don't have a strong opinion on it I'll go by your opinions... The Mailing List: The list generally gets help requests from users... about half the requests have to do with bots or have little to do with irc. Bot mails should probably be handled the the Bot Team, but other mails are fair game. Please reply to the user but also cc: to the list so everyone else knows the mail's been answered. #Dragonrealm: It would be really great if everyone could spend some time here, or on another help channel... (Yeah, yeah, I can hear you saying "when pigs fly", Myst and AK :P) Server channel: We don't have a channel specifically for dragon opers, or a dragon.dal.net help channel. But our channel (unofficially) is #relax and everyone is welcome to go there... it's a general, no-set-topic channel, +s, where quite a few opers and others hang out. How about making an official channel, too? Pros: 1) An "official" not +s place for people to find us (assuming we can find ourselves, morally, physically, and emotionally. oh wait, that's what the "Babysitters who Raped the Kids-They-Are-Sitting's Parents While They Watched Jenny Jones" are saying on the Montel Williams show... my bad...) 2) ircd-CPU-wise, it prolly has less overhead that locops, I remember some coding person saying every globop/locop has to go through every person on the server and check if they're +o or not... Warez is commercial software being traded or given for free. This is a federal crime, as well against DALnet policy. Clones are copies of a client, with the intent of flooding and causing trouble. An occasional extra client is not a problem, but when someone has quite a few of these, they are grounds for removal from the network. I hope this helps a little. Since users of mIRC or similar irc clients can change their username at will, the only way to keep him from imitating your address would be to ban him from the network, but we would would have to remove *everyone* from earthlink.net to do that. I will talk to him about this if/when I find him on irc, but in the meantime, the best thing for you to do would be to remove the address he's imitating from your NickServ access list. (If you need assistance, try asking on #dalnethelp... someone there can probably show you how to do this.) This will inconveneince you a little--you will have to identify to NickServ whenever you sign on--but he won't be able to use your nick. It may discourage him enough that he will give up in a few days and you can put your address back into NickServ. If you think he might try to get your password, you might want to talk to a CSop... you may be able to find a CSop on #dragonrealm. If not, someone can tell you how to find one. Also, if you see him trying to imitate you, you might want to find an IRCop online to talk to him about it. Again, you can probably find an IRCop on #dragonrealm. If you use UNIX, accessing IRC is very simple, since the very first IRC client was for UNIX. On most UNIX systems, you probably only need to type: irc to get on irc. (Or, to specify your nickname and the server, type irc followed by the nickname you wish to use, and the server you wish to use--something like: irc WhateverNick irc.dal.net ) You can access irc through telnet by telnetting to telnet.dal.net , but that isn't as good, because the telnet irc program doesn't let you do everything. What browser do you use? You probably can't use it to connect to irc, but you may be able to use a similar program. Catlin On Tue, 10 Jun 1997, Khalid Hyder wrote: > Hi, How do I join DALnet. This means it should no longer be suggested to users as a place to go look for help. I have absolutely no problem with it being recommended as a likely place to find an IRCop if someone is looking for an IRCop. That *is* what #dr's original goal has been. A place for Ircops/Admins to "be". Help is.. at this moment.. as it always was supposed to be ... The 2nd priority on #dragonrealm. What is the 1st priority? That would be conversation between Admins, IRCops, and perhaps even users about DALnet related things. There are not to ever be any conversations that become crude, vulgar, etc.. Personal issues should NOT be handled on the channel. Users joining the channel should see ops handling themselves in a mature, responsible manner (Yes, you CAN do that and be having fun at the same time). Users should be greeted. If they need help.. they should be pointed to the appropriate help channel. If they need a CSop.. you should do your best to find them a CSop. #dragonrealm is NOT a "CSop" channel. CSops can be tracked down in many other ways. If a user wants your help.. and you want to help them.. Help them. At absolutely no point should ANYONE on #dr be treated in a rude manner.. If you're too busy to help them.. let them know.. However #dalnethelp is almost always a better place for them to go if they are looking for assistance. Ircops on the network can be found through many ways.. most easily by just listing them with a 'who' command.. The goal of #dr is to centrally locate them so its easier to find a live one when needed.. I miss one thing about #dr in particular... DALnet used to set a new user high-count every night... and those of us in #dr would guess what the peak would be. It was actually quite fun.. So... those of you who are willing to play.. you're welcome to through out high-count #'s for the night starting tommorow.. say what.. 6pm PDT would be a good time to start watching? (And yes.. that's why #dr started keeping the +l stuff ) Well that's about it for now.. Though one other thing.. SOPs.. after you show your aops this.. give them about a week.. and then find out if they plan on using their aops.. If they don't want to.. please remove their access.. Then send me a listing of who did what.. and also indicate if you plan on keeping and using your SOP.. I am doing this to simply keep an accurate aop/sop list of people who actively use the channel.. Thank you for that. Oh.. you might want some like rules and stuff... 1) Act maturely 2) If a user is disrupting you ask them to leave (continue to logical end) 3) Be smart... don't drink and drive. ------------- MirclMax spike@dal.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Catlin Subject: (dragon-oper) DALnet-Ops: CFD: lestat.dal.net (fwd) Date: 11 Jun 1997 23:18:39 -0600 (MDT) Comments? :> ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Reply-To: ops-d@DAL.net Cc: ops@dal.net Note: For those who don't know, this is bofh.dal.net officially applying (it is a hub only server). ============================================================================== Section 1: Server Information ============================================================================== 1a. Please describe the ways you have been involved with DALnet. I originally joined the barovia.dal.net team a while ago as an oper. I quickly learned "about" dal.net, and within a matter of a couple weeks was asked to join the Routing team. I maintain O:lines on several servers. I have even been spotted (although I won't admit it!) in #dragonrealm :-) 2. Please indicate why you feel your server should become part of DALnet. lestat.oh.us.dal.net has already proven itself to be a valuable asset to DALnet. It has great links to the Internet and an experienced staff in its current incarnation as 'bofh'. I believe it will remain a great asset to DALnet because of its wide and varied links to the 'net: Sprint, UUNet, ANS, OARnet, DIGEX, MCI.. the ability to steadily hold any server is important and valuable. 3. Please describe any past experience with the IRC. I've been admin and oper of several EFnet servers, including Netsys, Eskimo, Harvard, OC.COM and others. I've been doing the IRC thing since before channels had names.. "and I had to walk uphill both ways, in three feet of snow with bare feet"=) I've contributed code to versions of ircd (back in my glory days of efnet, ircd2.6/2.7).. I've been an oper on DALnet for a period of time now.. enough to annoy everone at least once, I suppose :-) 4. Do you have any IRC Operators in mind? (Please list) Opers on BOFH are chosen strictly on routing ability or a great display of motivation and professionalism. acire erica Oper/barovia Routing team froggies Erik Oper/everywhere Web team.. MSofty Mark Admin/Toronto Routing team lead skumby Jacob Admin/defiant Skygod Matt Admin/ANS Strahd Dan Admin/barovia Toolman Bert Oper/gothic Some may call it "recycling opers," but it is not. It is taking the best talent I've seen and putting it on one server.. O:lines will not be for user control or such things; it will be for maintaining a fast, efficient hub in the core of DALnet. I trust all of the above opers, they all have (and will remain to have) config priveleges. I'm pleased to have Skygod as an oper: He's _my_ IRC mentor. He's been an IRC admin of major servers for years. (Don't blame him for the evil stuff, but thank him for the good!) :-) 5. How much active time would you estimate you will be able to dedicate to DALnet per week? This means actually being at your keyboard. 2-3 hours/day.. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I'm always "around" while at work.. if anyone /MSGs me I get "Bell in window 0", so you can say I'm "on call" 10 hours/day. I'm always reachable via e-page. 6. Do you have anything you would like to add that you haven't yet been able to tell us? (If so, please describe) - lestat is being submitted as a new application to DALnet. It is currently online as 'bofh.oh.us.dal.net'. - this server has been a part of DALnet for a few months now, and is a major hub, holding C/N lines for over 25 DALnet servers and hubs. 7. What experience do you feel you have in using your interpersonal skills? Interpersonal skills are required for any situation, and I feel that my interpersonal skills are pretty good. I actually commonly become annoyed when others don't communicate ideas and/or thoughts clearly. I am a communication nut. (Just look at my ircd.conf.. there are more comments than lines) :-) In the office, I am on a couple committees: Order Management Process (OMP), Customers Sats (CSAT) are my two favorites. OMP deals with process throughout the company, specifically how different departments deal with each other, etc.. it's *all* about communication. Customer Sats is a "focus group" of sorts to measure customer satisfaction results, and to suggest where we can improve customer relations. 8. As a potential DALnet admin, describe why you feel it is important to be an effective communicator of ideas. (List, IRCops, admins)? This question is too obvious. When more than one hand is in any pot, it is IMPERATIVE for each person to communicate what is happening before or after it happens. A great example of how I overcame this is again at work: Be basically forcing everyone to e-mail an internal "trouble" list when they take responsibility for a customer, we all know who is handling what, and we have a "paper trail" for down the road. Dragon has insisted he will reboot at least once every 24 hours for the past week. While this usually is not such a big deal, it's now decided to sit waiting for someone to type "fsck" and y for 5 min, *then* it will think about coming back up. Since the machine is remote, and it decides to do this at the most inconvient times, (like after xmission closes for the day/week), I basically get screwed until the following day. So, Webmaster (A DALnet admin) is sending us a replacement motherboard, to see if that is the problem, if so, we'll be looking to purcahsing a new mboard for dragon, and this constant crashing can stop. If it doesn't work.. my next guess is try to mess with the kernel, or maybe get a new one altogether. (ick) Wish us luck, If weyr/dragon is actually running on Friday, there is a scheduled *gasp* downtime to replace the board in the late afternoon, or early evening. + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * -FireMyst * "In 48 hours, I'm gonna be deader than a Saturday * + Let's Go Jazz!! + night in Salt Lake City" -- Dave Lister + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + E-Mail: Web Page: http://www.xmission.com/~dragon + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * + * ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: FireMyst Subject: Re: (dragon-oper) DALnet-Ops: CFD: lestat.dal.net (fwd) Date: 12 Jun 1997 11:03:43 -0600 (MDT) On Wed, 11 Jun 1997, Catlin wrote: > Comments? :> I'll fall under "If you can't something nice, don't say anything at all". So you stay on it and after a while the server drops you because it's not received a reply and the resulting ping time out or something else along those lines. If you could maintain a connection to the same server before this may be a temporary thing. There's a chance it may be something else, I may be wrong but that seems the most obvious thing that would be wrong in my opinion. To solve it I would recommend trying different servers to at least check if you have a more stable connection elsewhere, also try not to download a large number of things at the same time as that will worsen your connection even if slightly. To get a list of servers go onto any server and type /links it will show you each server connects on that network at the current time you try the command. What do you all think of having him on dragon? Catlin ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Hiya :) Okay, here goes.. I first migrated to DALnet like about a year and a half ago, when it used to be about 2-3k users. Months later, I decided to put up a DALnet server with a friend (Balsam Ahron) aka abtm, Q2. He then named the server taxi.dal.net which I co-admin'd. While we set up the machine, a few friends including myself came up with the idea of a small network where new servers would be tested. Nowadays, this network is known as "TestNet". Few weeks later, taxi was voted in :) Time goes by and I was elected as CSOP 'til the date I've been helping users with common problems. But then a problem came, abtm and I lost ircd.conf access, which forced us to abandon the machine. As of today, I don't have a primary server since taxi was delinked :( A new policy then was approved saying that all opers having backups without primaries would be removed. And here you have me :) I didnt have many backups only one on raptor and dreamscape. Background on IRC: - Current EFnet IRCop - Ircin'g for almost 4 years now. We've only been up 4 hours, since 5am EST, so I suspect we fall under the "more than once" category... if anyone was online at the time and could talk to me about it that would be great... Meanwhile, I suspect we shoudln't go telling too many non-opers about it.. the last thing we need is everyone out crashing servers instead of winnuking people... Catlin :/ ---------- Forwarded message ---------- For those of you who's IRC Operators have already told you, or those of you that were present, this is old news. For the rest of you, well this is why your servers uptime is less then a day old. At approximetly 3:35 EDT, Jun 28, 16 servers were attacked, and crashed. No core files were left. We do not know what caused this. Some servers were hit more then once. We also do not know if this can be done at will, or if certain conditions permitted this to be done. We don't know much, just that this was done, and that there is a good chance it can be done at will. If you do not have a crontab setup for ircd and its possible to do so, I would highly suggest you get one setup. We have no way to trace this as of yet, so it may happen again. These are the servers that were affected by this attack: mystic, voyager, spider, ohare, cyberverse, toronto, gothic, bofh, barovia, stlouis, dragon, hebron, sodre, wizlink, glass, marvin stlouis and gothic are still down at the time of writing this, the rest have been restarted(for some, more then once :/). -Cabal95 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Andrew Kaufmann Subject: Re: (dragon-oper) *INFO* *INFO* (fwd) Date: 28 Jun 1997 09:09:10 -0500 (CDT) On Fri, 27 Jun 1997, Catlin wrote: > > Well, we have quite a few opers already, and I don't know much about this > guy, tico, so I thought I'd ask for opinions... he's looking for a new > server to Oper on. Servers were dropping like flies...worst I've ever seen. I'm sure you will be getting more details and not sure just how much light I can really spread on the subject, other than there supposedly is a loophole into the ircd that allows someone in to change O:lines connect lines etc and evidently do things at will with the servers. I was talking to a user and he had mentioned that and I'm kicking myself for not getting the details about it. I conferred witha couuple of other opers and was told to have him send the information to dalnet-src@ for investigation :/ Don't know how much more I can tell you at this point. We have a major problem now.. :/ As of now, the crontab has been fixed, my bad. I disabled it when I was doing the upgrade. And a few.. umm.. other problems.. heheh.. Cabal95 released a possible patch, there is no telling if this will actually fix it, but we can always take it off and add one that does.
