The James Taylor Quartet: Austin's Theme "Creation" + I was wary of later JTQ releases, but I was wrong. This release from 1997 is filled with great funky instros, including the themes for Starsky & Hutch & Dirty Harry. Receiver: Intro "Chicken Milk" + this cut features (what sounds like) a 60's radio jingle "First we take a groovy record & add a super-sound DJ..." Tim 'Love' Lee: Incense "Confessions of a Selector" + plenty of drones & old disco samples. Peter Thomas: Readheads "100% Cotton" Peter Thomas: High Crime "100% Cotton" + the recent double cd released by the Crippled Dick label. It features the soundtracks to the Jerry Cotton series of films. Many of these crime-tunes are very short (under 1 minute) so are ideal for dropping into the mix. What's this about Mr. Thomas recording with Combustible Edison? Portishead: All Mine "Portishead" + moody, noir-ish songs. One track even features a theremin. Freedom Power: Dopping 2000 "Stroboscopica- sonorizzazioni psycho beat" + the cover sez "Italian 70's psychedelic b-movies soundtracks & sonorizations". I can't get enough of this material. The James Taylor Quartet: Man of Mystery "Creation" Quincy Jones: Peter Gunn "Crime Jazz - Music in the first degree" + from the two volume set on Rhino. The Jesters: Peter Gunn Twist "Las Vegas Grind Pt.1" + released by Strip Records. Despite what some have said on this list, I think this is an outstanding series. The Dragons: Elephant Stomp "Frolic Diner Pt 2" New Albanian Riots: Teenage Conflict "The Cream of the Stars" + in the classic guitar-instrumental style. Their website can be found at: www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/underground/6154 Dick Dale & the Del Tones: The Victor "Revenge of the Surf Instrumentals" + a nice selection of tracks on this comp, but be advised that the total playing time is only 28 minutes. The Sentinals: Exotic "Wild Surf!" + this is more like it. 55 minutes of surf instrumentals. Released by Delfi. The Tiki Tones: Island Uprising "Idol Pleasures" + this band is real listener fave. Ganimian & his Orientals: Come with me to the Casbah "Jungle Exotica" + absolutely wild & rockin'. Uli Trepte: Psylomobil "Real Time Music + former member of Guru Guru, Neu, Faust & Spacebox. On this recording the featured instruments are bass, sax & percussion thereby creating a very cool beat-jazz flavour. Released by ATM records in Germany. Pasquale Castiglione: Games "Scoctopus" Comments & questions welcome Cheers, Allan. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info exotica" in the message. # Postings must go to exotica@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 11:56:20 -0500 From: "michael p baggett" Subject: (exotica) info anyone? The full piano accordion is much used in mainland Europe but is totally unsuitable to Irish/Scottish music. Button accordion (like a bandoneon) is a folk instrument that can really rock, current media fave is Sharon Shannon, but it's really a live thing for me. As well as Astor check out Ivo Papasov's Bulgarian Wedding band (they have stuff on Rykodisk), mad arabic influenced Eastern European folk jazz with a touch of Carl Stalling, set to impossible polyrhythms. Ivo is a virtuoso clarinettist but his accorionist is damn hot too. I also have a fondness for Les Negresse Vertes, though their musical pedigree is nothing like astor or Ivo. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info exotica" in the message. # Postings must go to exotica@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 18:23:37 -0500 From: "allanc" Subject: Re: (exotica) The "they people" Magnus wrote: > Some films you may have missed: > > the THEY PEOPLE (1957) > The THEY PEOPLE strikes back (1959) Then there is "They Live" directed by John Carpenter. All the people who have no taste of their own and just rely on other people for their taste. I thought the tagline for the film was "The they people. BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE". And I was under the impression that the sequel was about people who listen to New Country. Am I mixed up? Can't remember the name of the guy who was working on that film. Played his stuff with technique that Carl Finch considers to be roughly a light-year ahead of Flaco. Great songwriter ("Oaxaca" being a tender ode to that region's fine green-bud), wild man (eye-patch, stabbed in more than a few bar fights) and played his squeeze through a fuzzbox. (anybody a fan of steel-guit player Lloyd Green, who also played his Sho-Bud through a fuzzbox?) Also, nobody mentioned the multi-talented David Hidalgo whose accordion playing on Tom Waits' "Cold Cold Ground" defines swing and soul in purely instrumental terms. - --David Smay # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info exotica" in the message. # Postings must go to exotica@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 19:55:51 -0500 From: "allanc" Subject: Re: (exotica) The "they people" > > Then there is "They Live" directed by John Carpenter. Just how did the store classify it (I have to keep my eyes peeled for it)? I am also envious of the Ruth Wallis record, as I am TRYING to find all her stuff.... HOWEVER, it did not come with the cover, so I had to rely only on the label. I don't know who Miss D. is and she has to be the vocalist on this version of Caravan. I know that Quincy Jones and His Orchestra is doing the rest of the work. Does anyone know who Miss D. is? BTW, EVERY version of Caravan I have seems to do a different take on it. It is amazing how this tune can change so much and still be the same! Two other versions were found on 45s: The Mulcays and their Electric Harmonicas Coral 9-60578 Joe Valino (vocal) with George Siravo and his Orchestra Vik 4X-0226 On LP: Vincent Bell (guitar) with Charles Caelelo (a.& c.) The Best of Vincent Bell Musicor MS 3192 Arthur Lyman taboo HiFi RS806, R806 and R806. Yes, I got three copies of the Lyman album. The first I got (last week) was when I had been totally out of luck finding ANY copy of it. When I found it, I snagged it for $5 (which is pricey for me). Despite the fact that it was in mono, I was glad to have it. Today, however, I find a mono and stereo version...getting both for 50 cents! Arg! So far, I like EVERY version of Caravan I have come across, including one by the male Ethyl Smith: Lenny Dee.
