Right. So why resent them so much for doing so? And I don't know how the subject came up, but perhaps the Costello/Bacharach tour is passing through New York, in which case the issue of Bacharach's mediocre singing would be entirely topical...? Anyway, if you think Stern playing Bacharach during his nationally syndicated radio show won't put any money in Burt's pocket, think again. "Any publicity is good publicity," and all that. John Tesh LOVES it when Stern attacks his music -- he understands how the game works.... >i felt like saying, look man, why pick on a >guy like him? why not someone who is more widely accepted like Sinatra or >Bennet [sic] or Tom Jones for chrissake? Jones is "infamous" as much as "famous" -- known for having wadded-up panties thrown at him...whoopee. He's taken a lot less seriously as an artist than Bacharach. I can't understand why so many people seem to have picked up on the Lion And The Cucumber, apart from it being in the Jackie Brown soundtrack. Both these tracks have a great bassline and just swing, providing a great bridge between say, Pierro Umiliani or Gert Wilden and Tom Jones more swinging stuff like Not Responsible. Conklin" Subject: (exotica) RE: In Flight Entertainment >How are these comps? What do they sound like? Review from Multi-Directions (http://www.idcomm.com/personal/mconklin/ Compiled by the seemingly unstoppable Kaliminsky Experience, the In Flight Entertainment series concentrates on giving the listener relaxing music for an entire trip - Music for airline departure, music for airplane travel, music for airport lounges, etc. More than that, it's music for the jet set. This is music from a time when airline travel was all about luxury and swank. Beyond the concept though, this music is about grooving to some retro, hip, and kitsch tunes. The music really covers the gamut of cheese - Swinging big band numbers, funky easy listening music, organ quartets, French pop tunes, jazzy Latin pieces, mood music, vocal covers, and a few wacky Moog cuts. There's even a couple of novelty tunes, like Usha Uthup & Chorus', "One, Two, Cha Cha Cha", which is a samba based on Indian music. It's complete with sitar and tabulas. Additional tracks like Blossom Dearie singing, "London In The Rain", or Brigitte Bardot's rendition of, "Tu Veux, Tu Veux Pas" are probably novelty too, but even the novelty tunes aren't just for novelty sake. They're good, and fit perfectly in the mix. Most of the tracks come from smaller European labels that folded years ago. The tracks that do come from well-known labels like Verve, Phillips, and A&M, aren't bands that would show up on your average compilation - The Peter Covent Band, Tony Osbourne, Edmundo Ros, The Button Down Brass - you get the idea. Both compilations are outstanding and it's remarkable that all the music even fits together, especially considering the various styles and how awful some of these songs could be. What's more, is that you would never be able to find all of these tracks on vinyl. Surely, they would be hard to locate, but more importantly, without a reference point, it would be hard as hell to know what to look for. If I had to choose one over the other, I'd probably go with Further In Flight Entertainment. It's got more of a funky easy-listening groove to it. Either way though, 19 tracks on one and 20 tracks on another, you absolutely can't lose. >I really dig the Sound Galleries and TV Dinners '60s. >Is this along the same lines? Yes, but much better! So nice to see the name Klaus Wunderlich on the list... I discovered a record of his at a thrift-store and was FLOORED by the insanity of his bombastic, over-the-top style. The moment I saw him mugging for the camera's fisheye lens seated at the WERSI and ready to party, I knew this record was going to be worth the .99 I paid for it.This was a demo record for the WERSI organ, and who better to wring every drop of sound out of the WERSI than our good friend Klaus? I never heard of him before or since...untill today. > I prefer Klaus Wunderlich who turned the hammond into an experience of it's > own. But even he is not top. My favorite hammond record is by this obscure > American Bill Kehr who called himself "the Candyman". (1977 Sunnyvale Records) My own favourite is the Klaus Wanderlich moog 2000 record though I'm now thinking I should have overruled Cheryl when we saw that KL hammond record in a store a few months back. We will definitely will look into Bill Kehr as any recommendation by Moritz is IMHO, to be taken seriously! I thought "If you ever make those guys ANOTHER tape..." Oh stop tellling me about finding these things at thrift stores! You know I can't find the time to go (even if I wanted to). But unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it), the two guys that run the store I frequent most, happen to have an excellent eye for what is worthwhile. Being one of few stores here that actively deal in vinyl, and off the wall stuff at that, I'm happy they find such good stuff which may otherwise never appear. The downside is that the good stuff is going to cost. I look at it this way... If the record is really good, in OK condition, never likely to see a reissue, and still less than a comparable domestic Cd reissue, I'll usually buy it. Problem is, these things may never appear again so you don't always get a second chance if you pass it up the first time and I say this from experience! > I love records like this simply for the fact that it exists. It's so cheap > and generic and yet there is something quite unique about it. I'm not sure > I'd put it in the same Gert Wilden and Peter Thomas category that Brian > does - then again that's his territory more than mine - but for something > so "throwaway", it's not far I guess. OK, I probably exaggerated somewhat. I should maybe have said it made me very much think of the big guns I mentioned. It struck me this strongly as it was so good yet appeared to be exactly what you say, a generic record in that the entire back cover is given over to the marvels of the label and nothing said at all about the artists. > It suddenly occurs to me "Why would anyone here want to hear about a record > that they'll probably never hear?" I probably should have just sent this > to Brian but what the hell... Not a problem for me though there may be those on the list that disagree. I'm not sure if this record was a Canadian only thing or if it was licenced in other countries. Usually the parent is in the US. BTW, that Sitar record I passed up was also on the same label so... I thought I heard that, because of some contractual > thang. What a great record, one of my favorite crime jazz of all time, > and the definitive nervous beat. I know Darrell Brogdon(who has not > written me to say hi, hint, hint:)...knows the score...Darell? I'm not sure I know the real score, either. What I heard was Kenyon Hopkins simply adopted a couple of names for "Lonelyville" so it wouldn't seem like one guy did all the work. Maybe since the album was credited to the Creed Taylor Orchestra, the label or somebody didn't want it to look like a Kenyon Hopkins album. As somebody on this list said once, Creed Taylor was just the money for this album. Kenyon Hopkins did the music. Since he worked a lot for ABC- Paramount, I doubt it was a contractual thing. Another cool Kenyon Hopkins album that I don't see mentioned very often is "Ping, Pang, Pong! The Swinging Ball", also on ABC- Paramount. It's his obligatory percussion show-off album, featuring mostly standards but a couple of great originals by KH. The drum beaters include such old reliables as Phil Kraus, Joe Venuto, Don Lamond and Panama Francis. Also wordless vocals by Flo Handy. Still another swell Hopkins LP is "Rooms", a moody, crime jazz-esque ballet suite from the '50s. A couple of tunes from the "Rooms" suite are featured on "Swinging Ball", too. Hard to find but well worth the effort! Also, in addition to the soundtracks, look out for a couple of '50s Capitol albums by a singer named Susan Barrett. Guess who did the arrangements and conducted? And don't forget "Nightsounds" and others with pianist Joe Bushkin on Capitol--KH again! Enough already. Thanks for the space.
