The hallmarks of soft rock or pop for me are the quality of the voices and to a lesser degree the "suckiness" of the messages. "Hippie-inspired" is part of it. References to trees, sunshine, flowers and the innocence of children. "Innocence" is a good word too. Of course I don't really believe that all these bands were actually innocent. In some cases I think they were as cynical as those heavy metal bands who put on flannel and called themselves "grunge". But to some degree that's what I'm looking for. Just as I like the way the "NOW sound" mimics rock but gets it wrong, same goes for a lot of this soft rock. To be soft, it has to have soft voices. Sweet, soft harmony. You can't sing soft rock or pop if you growl or whine. Or try it this way. Soft rock is rock with no blues, no soul, no black music component whatsoever. It's rock on the poppy side. But it doesn't include the Poppy Family who really rocked, screamed and hollered. I hope someone's compiling all this. The presentation will be in addition to LEE HAZLEWOOD=92s first solo performance for 25 years, which takes place on June 28 at the Royal Festival Hall. Tickets for the film night are =A35, and, like tickets for the performance, are available from the Royal festival Hall Box Office on 0171 960 442. The evening will feature two unique films featuring the talents of the endearingly iconoclastic singer/songwriter/producer LEE HAZLEWOOD, produced in collaboration with the Swedish director Torbj=F6rn Axelman. Known primarily for his work as a songwriter and producer for Duane Eddy and Nancy Sinatra, HAZLEWOOD was also a performing and recording artist in his own right, releasing a string of sterling solo albums throughout the 60s and 70s. COWBOY IN SWEDEN, released in 1970, sets a suite of HAZLEWOOD compositions to Axelman=92s footage of various Swedish landscapes; a long-form music video made well before the advent of MTV. A critical and commercial success in Sweden, the soundtrack, performed by LEE with the help of singers Nina Lizell and Suzie Jane Hokom, went gold in that country. NANCY & LEE IN LAS VEGAS, from 1975, intertwines a vintage performance by this incomparable duo at Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin=92s Riviera with backstage/behind the scenes shenanigans as seen through the eyes of co-director Axelman. HAZLEWOOD=92s verit=E9-style editing manages to capt= ure both the surreal glitz and the lighter side of the Vegas experience. The screenings follow the re-release of two HAZLEWOOD albums on CD: the album Cowboy In Sweden, and Farmisht, Flatulence, Origami, ARF!!! And Me (the first new LEE HAZLEWOOD album in two decades). These are the first in a series of HAZLEWOOD re-issues by Hoboken based Smells Like Records, an independent label run by Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley. LEE HAZLEWOOD - FIRST AND ONLY SOLO PERFORMANCE IN 25 YEARS LEE HAZLEWOOD, the trailblazing songwriter, producer and singer, has announced that he will be performing at the Meltdown Festival, directed by Nick Cave. The show takes place at the Royal Festival Hall, LONDON on Monday June 28, and is the first time that he has performed solo anywhere in the world for 25 years. Lee=92s last solo show took place in Sweden in 1974. This will be his only scheduled live appearance anywhere in the world. Tickets cost =A327.50 / =A325 / =A322.50 / =A320 from the Royal Festival Hall box= office (0171 960 4242). A support act will be announced shortly. For the Meltdown show Lee will be joined by long-time cohort and guitarist Al Casey, who has recorded and performed with artists as diverse as Duane Eddy, Dean Martin and the Beach Boys (including work on =93Pet Sounds=94)= , alongside Brad Bauder. They will be accompanied by The Lars Samuelsson Group. (Lars was one of the arrangers on the =93Cowboy in Sweden=94 album= .) The show will cover material from Lee=92s entire career. Songs from his new album, as well as lost classics and some of the hits, have been promised. Lee may be most famous for his work with Nancy Sinatra - he wrote =93Thes= e Boots Were Made For Walking=94 and =93Some Velvet Morning=94 - but his so= lo albums have been the stuff of legend for many years, despite being expensive collector=92s items. His gravelly voice, dark lyrical insight and melodic skills recall Johnny Cash, but Lee=92s playful corruption of genres sets him apart from any of his contemporaries as his music has always stood outside of fashion. Lee was also responsible for giving Duane Eddy and Gram Parsons their first breaks, and has worked with Dean Martin, Waylon Jennings and countless other greats. His songs have been covered by a whole range of artists, from Jesus & Mary Chain to Billy Ray Cyrus, Dusty Springfield to Einsturzande Neubauten, and have influenced many more. They have also appeared in numerous films, most recently Fargo, Forrest Gump and Austin Powers. ************ City Slang Records / Bungalow Records / Easy!Tiger Records Suite 209 Bon Marche Centre 444 Brixton Road LONDON SW9 8EJ Tel: 0171 733 9700 Fax: 0171 733 9060 Mobile: 0958 655308 www.cityslang.com www.bungalow.de # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 11:29:11 +0100 From: "Charles Moseley" Subject: (exotica) Weekend finds I went to a crappy old Car Boot Sale this weekend and scored Ray Martin's Dynamica, Dick Shory's Holiday for Percussion and another Schory Percussion record - Purcussion Pops? something like that anyway. In 1980, he formed his own Finesse label and issued albums by Mel Torme, the Modern Jazz Quartet and Paul Desmond. He retired in the early 1990s. Glancy began working for Columbia as a salesman and then Midwestern sales manager. He traveled to London in the 1960s and helped revive the flagging British division by promoting a series of hit records. He was 99. Guru Hanuman spent his life on the banks of Yamuna River in New Delhi, operating an Indian-style wrestling camp, or akhada, where he offered free training to anyone interested in the sport. Over the years, Guru Hanuman, as he was called -- his real name was not known -- established 1,200 wrestling centers in India. He reportedly borrowed the name of the Hindu monkey-god known for his physical strength. A tire of the car in which he was traveling burst and the vehicle crashed into a tree in the village of Rithani, 35 miles north of New Delhi, Indian news agencies reported. Even in his 90s, Guru Hanuman trained for four hours every day, later enjoying a huge meal of bread, vegetables and milk. Jimmy's description of soft rock works well for describing the late 60s bands like Orpheus, Association or Harpers Bizzarre type of bands. And Nat's dscription of soft voices, sweet soft harmony and no blues, soul or black music component works well for describing late fifties early 60's groups like the Crewcuts, Teddy Bears and the Fleetwoods all of which proceded the hippy/folk influences. Taken together they provide better parameters then I expected. Thanks Jimmmy and Nat & Jamie for all the comments on & off list. Anybody else out there have strong recommendations? I have come across a lot of "world music" releases that blend in very well with exotica or lounge mixes, partly because they are so enjoyably "musical" and yet at the same time somehow odd. Most people on the list know about Os Mutantes, for example, but there's also some really great material from these other Latin groups (among many others): 1. Karnak, a hip high-energy Brazillian group that at times sounds operatic, borrows a little from Arab music, and even quotes Chattenooga-Choo-Choo in one song. 2. Uakti, a melodic Brazillian group that specializes in odd percussion instruments, often mixed with flute. 3. Inti Illimani, a Peruvian group with an Andean sound that often sounds European. Fans of belly dance music will probably enjoy a CD by Salamat called "Mambo El Soundani." And fans of Fellini might enjoy an Alpine brass band CD by Die Knodel called "Overcooked Tyroleans." This is a bit silly of course because if you don't see it, why would anyone want to make you see it. I love that packaging and the whole idea of stereo you can see. It's kind of hard to separate that from the "music" and if I started doing that, I'd have to get rid of lots of records. But there are some great "musical" moments scattered throughout those records and between Stereo Action and a number of other records I own that Ray Martin either produced or arranged or put out under his name, I've come to the conclusion that he definitely belongs in the lounge/bachelor pad pantheon. As it turns out, he's looking for quad records so I pick these up on a trade (for a Montenegro quad and a Louis Bellson Project 3 quad record among others.) No money changes hands on this particular day but if I don't get control of this, I'm going to have the best vinyl lounge collection of anyone living in a box. I suspect mine is more mainstream than some others, although this is probably due to scarcity of records rather than taste... Important ingredients for me are a) lots of nice vocal harmonies b) that the songs have a slightly hip beat, rather than being slow and ballad-y (this would exclude some late 50s things like 'earth angel' and 'sh-boom' (which incidentally I love, but would rather have the penguins and the chords singing than the crew-cuts...)) c) a major key and nice warm string sound also helps I'm constantly finding new things I like, so this list isn't remotely exhaustive, but my 'soft pop' tapes generally cover the following: - Free design (songs like 'bubbles', 'I found love', '2006 hit song', 'you could be born again') - early 70s (A&M period?) Burt Bacharach (eg South American Getaway, Pacific Coast Highway) - Spanky and our Gang - late 60s and early 70s A&M stuff like Claudine Longet, Chris Montez and less shmaltzy Carpenters tracks ('we've only just begun', 'I won't last a day without you', 'yesterday once more') - late 60s and early 70s Beach Boys (Pet Sounds, Friends, 20/20) - less rocky Mamas and Papas and Cass Elliott tracks ('Disney Girls', 'Dedicated to the one I love', 'Dream a little dream' rather than 'Creeque alley' or 'California Dreaming') - American/Brazilian recordings from the late 60s (eg. by Marcos Valle, Astrud Gilberto, Tamba Trio, but recorded in the US with a deliberately more accessible style) - some 60s orchestra plus vocal group stuff (eg Jankowski singers, hipper Ray Charles and Enoch Light singers stuff, those great Bob Crewe LPs from the late 60s) In response to Chuck's mail, yes, I guess the vocals on Patience & Prudence make this soft pop, but what is missing for me is the attempt at 'hipness' in rhythm. I guess this only came from the 'swinging london' thing, and from late 60s west coast pop and the things influenced by it. I love the Girl Group scene, but don't think it often with my vision soft pop, since the instrumentation is generally more primitive. Sorry to have gone on; this is a very interesting topic for me. regards, Jonny # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 12:37:39 +0100 From: Peter Hipwell Subject: Re: (exotica) Weekend finds > From: Nat Kone > At 11:29 AM 5/25/99 +0100, Charles Moseley wrote: > > > >I went to a crappy old Car Boot Sale this weekend and scored Ray Martin's > >Dynamica, Dick Shory's Holiday for Percussion and another Schory Percussion > >record - Purcussion Pops? something like that anyway. Hardly any of the American "Stereo Action" records were released over here. "Latinesque" and the the ones Charles mention are the only ones I know of for sure. 2. They don't have that nice packaging. 3. But there are a lot of totally crap RCA records by "Cyril Orandel and the Stereo Action Orchestra" which are outstandingly naff, duff, and shoddy, with complete ping-pong hocketing arrangements. Some of these are funny because they're so bad, but that's about it. 4. More generally, the "Stereo Action" titles are released as part of the RCA International series, which prominently features artists such as Jim Reeves. > But there are some great "musical" moments scattered throughout those > records and between Stereo Action and a number of other records I own that > Ray Martin either produced or arranged or put out under his name, I've come > to the conclusion that he definitely belongs in the lounge/bachelor pad > pantheon. Oh, Ray Martin does have some amazing moments. Personally, I think "Dynamica" is one of the best. I think appreciation of it might depend where you lie on the "Spike Jones vs. James Brown" scale. I'm also very fond of his baroque album ("Michelle") which has a rocking harpsichord version of The Stones' "As Tears Go By"... mmm, nice! # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 13:23:20 +0100 From: "Charles Moseley" Subject: (exotica) Weekend finds 'where you lie on the "Spike Jones vs. James Brown" scale' - The mind boggles! # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 10:25:45 -0500 From: Lou Smith Subject: (exotica) [obit] John Burton Tigrett *John Burton Tigrett MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Entrepreneur John Burton Tigrett, who amassed a fortune as a toy maker and bus company executive and was an adviser to politicians, businessmen and musicians, died May 18. He was 85. Vice President Al Gore, a family friend, recalled his excitement as a child when his mother took him to Tigrett's toy factory. It was ``the closest thing you could get to Willie Wonka.'' Tigrett later became an adviser to him. Tigrett amassed a fortune through an array of ventures -- as a book salesman, an executive with American Burlington Bus Lines and an investor in patents. His most famous patent was probably for the ``drinking duck'' novelty toy known as the Glub-Glub, a whimsical bird that appears to drink water from a glass as it bobs back and forth. He paid $800 for the patent in the 1950s and sold 22 million. He also invented children's mesh playpens after his baby son John cut himself on a wooden one. - ------------------------------ Death anniversaries for the week of 24 - 30 May: Tuesday, 25 May 1990 - Vic Tayback; actor, "Alice" Wednesday, 26 May 1995 - Isadore "Friz" Freleng; cartoon animator, Warner Brothers Friday, 28 May 1978 - Arthur Brough; actor, "Are You Being Served?" 1998 - Phil Hartman; actor, "Saturday Night Live" - ------------------------------ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 08:49:24 -0400 From: Subject: (exotica) Is it just me.... This information > was >- announced yesterday morning from IBM. Here's what IBM says about it: http://www.av.ibm.com/BreakingNews/HypeAlert/Guts/ Another VIRUS WARNING !!!!!!! hoax message has found its way into the netstream, this one containing quite a few of the common hoax characteristics. Using hoax heuristics (rules to help determine if a message has characteristics making it likely to be a hoax), you can learn to recognize Virus Hoaxes. The characteristics which appear in this message are many. One of them, the request to forward the message to everyone you can, even appears four times. First, there is the almost obligatory warning to not open mail with a specific Subject: line. In this case, the Subject line is; "It Takes Guts to Say 'Jesus'" The warning continues, claming that if you do open a message with that Subject: line, it will erase everything on your hard drive. Recipients of the hoax are urged to 'Forward this letter out to as many people as you can'. The virus is referred to as "new and very malicious." So far, you can see several common hoax heuristics: All capital letters with copious explanation marks in the announcement Claims of damage, in this case, erasing your entire hard disk Description of the virus as 'new and very malicious' Request for you to send the message along to as many people as you can. In fact, this request is made at the beginning of the hoax and again near middle and again shortly thereafter and again near the end of the message. There is one additional twist to this hoax. Appended in what appears to be almost an afterthought, the "RETURNED MAIL" hoax message is part of the "It Takes Guts to Say 'Jesus'" Hoax. You can read more about the RETURNED MAIL hoax warning. Finally, the "It Takes Guts to Say 'Jesus'" hoax message claims the information about the 'new virus' originated at IBM. As always, if you have questions or concerns about Computer Virus Hoaxes, please check our hype alerts section. You can read more about hoaxes and how to recognize them in the paper "How to Spot a Virus Hoax". # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of exotica-digest V2 #400 *****************************
