McFarland did some fairly straight jazz albums but it's the wonderful "fake jazz" material that folk here in exotica will appreciate. I was cruzing some old sites tonight and found this preface to Vik's Lounge. I kinda depresses me. "Started in 1996 to cover the lounge revival, Vik's Lounge focused not on the historical but rather current scene. It was the first home for Capitol's Ultra Lounge collection and Caroline's Scamp Records. Captiol, Scamp, Dionysus and Rykodisc partnered with Vik's for new release promotions. Users were encouraged to send field reports for the Jet Set providing a global clearing house of lounge nights, radio and happenings. In 1997, Radio Vik became one of the first 24 hour all lounge web radio stations featuring current releases, classic vinyl and global radio shows. Also in 1997, Vik's became home to the original web lounge site, Space Age Bachelor Pad Music. SABPM creator Joseph Holmes no longer wanted the site, Vik's creator Frank Davis offered to archive SABPM at Vik's. One year later, the lounge revival was fading and Vik's Lounge also went into archive." Skal ! ! ! ! As old Magnus would say! This is an interesting thread; I would just like to add some further comments to chuck's observation. One very interesting aspect of soft rock (the term I personally prefer, even if it is an oxymoron) is not the music itself but rather the people involved in its creation. In studying the background of the behind-the-scenes players, one starts to get a better handle on just what it is that places one work within the soft rock category and another outside the genre. Phil Spector, known for his overwhelming wall-of-sound productions, was one of the earliest producers to dabble in the genre. His Teddy Bears' singles for Dore were recorded at Gold Star Records. The Fleetwoods earliest sides too were recorded at Gold Star (at least the backing tracks were). Phil's work with Specotr's Three and the Paris Sisters, both classic examples of early soft rock, too were tracked at Gold Star. Strangely enough, this studio is very closely connected with an extraordinarily large percentage of the records that seem to have become grouped within the so-called soft rock genre. Jack Nitzsche often recorded there; check out his Expecting To Fly by Buffalo Springfield for a great soft rock track. One of Phil's proteges, Jerry Riopelle, wrote Close Your Eyes for Bonnie (another Gold Star recording), and then went on to form the definitive soft rock band the Parade, who signed with A&M. A sub-genre of soft rock is called "the A&M sound", and includes artists like Roger Nichols & the Small Circle of Friends, Sandpipers, Burt Bacharach, Merry-Go-Round, Claudine Longet and even Chris Montez.Later, the Caprenters carried on the A&M Sound, and sure enough, the songwriter credits see Roger Nichols and Burt Bacharach name-checked on many of these records. t. On the other side of Barham there was another similar circle which of late has been tagged "the Burbank Sound", including Harpers Bizarre, Sunflower/Surf's Up-era Beach Boys and Van Dyke Parks. Even though the genre seems to have started with Teddy Bears and Fleetwoods (Patience & Prudence recorded such music by default, me thinks), the bulk of what we refer to as soft rock seems to have come about, at least in part, through the following factors: 1. Revolver and Pet Sounds - notice that soft rock artists often cover songs from these albums (or other lighter Beatles and Beach Boys titles). Both albums seem to have paved the way for other artists to follow in a similar style (e.g., Love's Forever Changes & Rascals Once Upon a Dream), where sophisticated arrangements replace a straight guitar/bass/drums set up and harmonies are usually at the forefront. 2. The advent of "underground" FM radio - When amps got bigger and bands started writing and actually playing on their own records, the sound got heavier and albums became more important in the rock world than singles. While rock started on its long downward spiral by jacking up the volume and incorporating extended jams, it left a hole in Top 40 which was filled by mediocre old-school pop, bubblegum, and, to a lesser extent, soft rock. 3. The pros of the pre-hard rock era needed a niche area to continue to work in. - Many of the early 60s producers, arrangers and writers were not willing or were unable to cross over to the genre which spawned regrettable bands like Blue Cheer and Iron Butterfly. So, those who had worked on surf, girl group and beat records went in a softer direction, leaving the heavy market to the less experienced and less schooled. Is it any wonder that John Barry or Burt Bacharach records have aged far better than much of the early hard rock records? Anyway, those factors certainly played a role in shaping what we now call soft rock. When did soft rock end? Or, has it ended? Well, it isn't a black and white question. There is a lot of gray area, but personally, I think when Carole King followed the soft rock classic "The City" with phenomenal success of her Tapestry, it marked the end. The sunshiny "ba-ba-ba-ba" harmonies faded into the background, the arrangements took on a decidedly less jazzy feel. Tapestry is a signpost, though, not a fatal blow. We hear elements of soft rock in contemporary music like High Llamas, Wondermints, Apples in Stereo, Cornelius, Komeda and even Sean Lennon. I hope soft rock will continue to be reinvented by new artists into the new millennium. Although not all soft rock artists had a background in earlier pop/rock recordings, many did. Some names to look for in the fine print: Curt Boettcher (Association, Sagittarius, Eternity's Children, Millennium) Gary Zekley (Yellow Balloon, Jan & Dean, Bonnie, Grass Roots) Jack Nitzsche (Paris Sisters, Bob Lind, the Cake, Buffalo Springfield) Roger Nichols (Small Circle, Sundowners, Claudine Longet, 4 King Cousins, Carpenters) Jerry Riopelle (Bonnie, the Parade) Anders & Poncia (Tradewinds, Innocence, Critters) Lou Adler (Mamas & Papas, Johnny Rivers, 5th Dimension) Bob Crewe (Four Seasons, Lesley Gore, Bob Crewe Generation) Jimmy Webb (5th Dimension, Glen Campbell, Johnny Rivers) John Carter and Ken Lewis (Ivy League, Flowerpot Men, White Plains, Fortunes, Edison Lighthouse) Tony Hatch (Pet Clark, Tony Hatch Orchestra, Chris Montez) Jerry Ross (Keith, Jerry Ross Symposium, Jay & the Techniques) I don't know if any of this helps in defining the genre or clouds the issue even further. Waldo Semon, who was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1995, died Wednesday at a northeast Ohio retirement community at the age of 100. Semon was best known for inventing vinyl and helping lead the emergency effort to produce synthetic rubber during World War II. During a 1995 interview with the Akron Beacon Journal, Semon said that shortly after being hired by the B.F. Goodrich Co. in Akron, he was asked to see if he could make a rubber adhesive from a then little-known chemical, polyvinyl chloride. Instead, Semon discovered a way to turn PVC into a flexible, elastic material that became the basis for today's global vinyl plastic industry. Semon earned 116 U.S. patents by the time he retired in 1963. But family members told the newspaper Semon always found it amusing that, for all of his serious inventions, most people would ask him about bubble gum. What more would you want? Didn't know he'd arranged/produced Getz. Thanks, Nat. The Skye gatefold LP (SK-2) is one of the better $2 I've frittered away at Goodwill. A good intro LP is "The Exotic Sounds of Bali" Balinese Music performed by Gamelan Gong Sekar Anjar and Gender Wajang Quartet under the direction of Dr. Mantle Hood. It's on Columbia Odyssey, n.d. -- late 70s to early 80s??. Pieces are short, with one long 15-minute "suite", all scored for dance or for the famed Javanese shadow plays. Superb liner notes, uncredited, tell you a bit about the instrumentation, context, and the experience of attending a dance or shadow play. A gorgeous often tranquil record, appealing to people who love repetition and riffs of Philip Glass scores, Bach fugues, and Indian ragas. It's playing right now, and energizes me like the wonderful Nigerian juju music by King Sonny or Ebanezar Obay. The mood and the tintinabulating sound of gongs/metallaphones bring to mind exotica's Holy Trinity: Denny, Lyman, Baxter. Anyone know if these guys studied gamelan or hired Indonesian musicians for their bands? Exoticats lusting for musical adventure should attend a gamelan/shadow play/dance performance if it comes to yer town. Leisurely, bewitching shows, with incredible eye and ear candy. And for you ethnomusicologists who already know and love gamelan, check out three exhaustive studies of gamelan and Javanese vocal music edited by Judith O. Becker, a world class authority at the U of Michigan: "Karawitan: Source Readings in Javanese Gamelan and Vocal Music" - Edited by Judith Becker with assistance from Alan H. Feinstein. Vols. 1, 2, and 3, 420 to 520 pages each, $US 44.05 each. English translations of essays by Indonesian master musicians and composers. These ain't for amateurs, but these books are indispensable for experts or musicians crazed to learn the real poop on one variety of "exotic percussion". Given the rarity of the content, Becker's reputation, and the short print run, it's amazing the books are still available. Order from CSSEAS Publications, http://www.umich.edu/~iinet/csseas/pubs.html You gotta be patient with CSSEAS. It's a shoestring operation (I know, I ran the press for a while) and things slow to a crawl in summer. They're smart about overseas shipping though.
