Beefhearts were OK, Quinns were bearable. Beefheart did the artwork for the incredibly rare LAFMS Blorp-Essete comps. There's a CD reissue out now which I hope will have the artwork included. My copy's on order but check it out at Forced Exposure. Now that we're on the subject I can't help but think back to another entertainer gone artist, Red Skelton, and those f***ing clowns of his! To this day I can't forget seeing no end of them them in just about every high end tourist trap art gallery in Hawaii and I'm sure every other like resort. Talk about too much of a good thing... My personal favourite in this particular class (aside from Moritz R of course!) is Gary Panter whose art and music are both equally bizarre. I think Tom Recchion of LAFMS fame fits in the same category. I'm not sure in all case thought if the music came before the art or vice versa. It also works the other way around...painters and other visual artists producing music (or at least producing records as sometimes the end result is less than musical). I have a particular fondness for the lps of Joseph Beuys and the artists improv group "Selten Gehorte Musik" which features performances by Dieter Roth, Gerhard Ruhm, Oswald Wiener, Hermann Nitsch and Gunter Brus etc.. The music on these lps is very odd indeed. Special mention should go to a phenomenal compilation lp called "Fluxus Anthology" released by Recorthings in Italy. Highlights include Ben Vautier's "Some Ideas for Fluxus" and Beuy's pop song "Sonne Stat Reagan". In case any list members are interested in artist records, the are two books worth tracking down: Ursula Block & Michael Glasmeier "Broken Music - Artists' Recordworks" published by Daadgalerie Berlin/Gemeentemuseum Den Haag/Magasin Grenoble. This book is a 278 page discography and features plenty of cover reproductions, performer info and track listings. Jean-Paul Bret/Charles Hernu "D.I.S.C.O.T.H.E.Q.U.E. ...experiences sonores d'artistes". Maison du Livre, d l'image et du Son. Ville de Villeurbanne. 1989. A much smaller book with text in French. Not nearly as complete as Broken Music, but an interesting curiousity if you can locate a copy. Let's call him Monty. He was in his mid to late 50s, with an amiable disposition. I figured it was worth my while to ask Monty if he had any records, even though I didn't see any sitting around. He grinned and said that he had ten or twenty in the house, he paused and said "ten or twenty-thousand". I grinned back and said, "Really?" Monty came back with "yeah, I've been collecting for 30 years". I listed a few artists, Denny, Baxter, Montenegro, Keampfert, Esquivel, Dick Schory, and others. He said that he had some of each person I mentioned. Monty said some of them would sell for a buck each maybe less and maybe more. He did mention that he sold some stuff mail order out of "Goldmine", so I figured he wouldn't be just throwing stuff away, but I was curious. I asked him for his phone #, he had no phone, although he was familiar with phone technology. I had to be on my way, and he was in mid yard sale so I told him I'd be back. He said he was usually around and to stop by any time. I said I would. I stopped back by today. It was 11:30 and he was home. He let me in and the inside of the 2 family house (he owns it and lived on the first floor) looked pretty much like what I expected. It was ceiling to floor records, and other weird crap. He took me into the room where he kept the most of the records that I had mentioned. It was a real tight squeeze getting anywhere in the house and neither one of us were especially wide human beings, not that there's anything wrong with being wide. Monty kept warning me that this shelf or that one might crash down on me. We got to the easy listening/exotica/now/lounge/soundtracks. It took 10 minutes of moving to get to the stuff I' was looking for, more or less. Durring our digging, Monty started telling me about how he had his record organized. Some were by type of music, some where by instrument, some where by preformer, some may have been by preformer's eye color. It was getting stuffy in the house. Anyway I found some Enoch Light, Brass Ring, Three Suns, Baja Marimba Band, There were maybe decent Stereo Action albums and bunches of other stuff. I only had about 45 minutes today and most of my time was spent moving records to make room to look at anything. I was so overwhelmed by the impending avalanche and the vastness of that ocean of vinyl that I had neglected to ask Monty the most important question of all "What do you want for these, how much...huh...huh, how much money?". At the end of my 45 minutes, I handed Monty a stack and said, "So what do you want for these?". He looked through them all and said, "I don't think you're going to like my price." I had no idea what he meant. "Five bucks each", Monty said. Now I knew what he meant. Five bucks for The Brass Ring in so-so condition, Bert Kempfert's "A Man Could Get Killed" (which Monty had 7 copies of). Five bucks for the Dick Hyman's "Mirrors", The Baja Marimba Band, Living Brass or Vernie Green's Futura Stereo Action album. I didn't quite understand what his pricing structure was, and I was starting to feel woozy. I saw a box of naked Barbie dolls sitting on top of some records in the hall. I had to be somewhere so I told Monty that 5 dollars was more then I had planned on paying. He pulled out a price guide and showed me that Kempfert's "A Man Could Get Killed" was listed for $25.00. I wasn't up for a debate and I asked him what were the albums that he had for a dollar or less. He said follow me and marched me into his basement. At that moment I got this weird feeling that Monty was going to show me the room where he strung up and disemboweled the people who were stupid enough to walk down into his basement. Instead he showed me two large wood tables stacked 4 feet high with albums. He told me if I wanted to dig through these there might be some that he'd sell for a dollar or fifty cents. I told him that maybe I'd come back and do some digging, but I had to get going. On my way out Monty told me that he'd be interested in trading records for Jane Mansfield memorabilia, or old sheet music. It was getting way too weird and I needed lunch. I agree about Percy but I'm not sure I can agree with the comment about the seventies since my favorite record of his - Black Magic Woman - is probably early seventies. I could confirm that if they'd make the damn writing bigger. I think a lot of these guys got kind of interesting in the early seventies when they got desperate to cash in on rock and funky jazz. I wish I could remember the exact cut but I've heard some seventies Kostelanatz that was totally wild and off-the-wall. And maybe this is a bit of a stretch but there are some Woody Herman records in the early seventies where he's trying to do "jazz-rock" that are great, if accidentally so. I've played cuts for those "acid jazz" DJ types and enjoyed their reaction when they wanted to know who it was. It's kind of apples and oranges to compare someone like Percy to someone like Martin Denny. I may be ignorant on Denny but the only records I've ever seen with his name on them were "Martin Denny" records. These other guys - Percy, Ray Martin, David Carroll, Sonny Lester, Phil Moore, Don Costa, Shorty Rogers, Les Baxter, Nelson Riddle (hey this is fun!), Bob Shad, Bob Thiele (okay I'll stop)... ... they arranged for singers, did soundtracks, arranged "faceless" instrumental records, tried the Now Sound, tried "jazz" etc etc They never did a bad job but sometimes they succeeded too well at being as boring as their employer wanted them to be. But sometimes they hit the exotica/lounge/Now Sound jackpot. If there is any member on the West Coast (Pacific Time Zone) that can record a TV program on E! Television for me this morning (Wednesday) from 7-8 AM please let me know. The show is called Homes with Style and may be 2 episodes (one at 7:00 and one at 7:30). Basically, they did an interview with Shag about his artwork and studio and the picture he was working on for me was featured (according to Shag). I spoke with Shag yesterday and he said that the show was finally out but he had not seen it tho a friend told him he had. I do not see it listed anywhere else on the E! online schedule for broadcast this week so this is probably it. Unfortunately I did not look at the schedule until 8:03 this moring (3 minutes after it was over on the East Coast!). Hopefully someone will read this in time. You can call me at 843 795-3937 if needed. He was 57. Herbert, who brought the Spice Girls together and lately managed the teen pop group Five, died after he lost control of his car in heavy rain and it collided with another car in Windsor, west of London. Two people in the other car were injured. Herbert and his son, Chris, sought candidates for the Spice Girls via an ad in a trade magazine in 1996. They selected and coached the five young women, who went on to international pop stardom. The group later fired Herbert in favor of another manager, and their number was reduced to four when Geri Halliwell - -- Ginger Spice -- quit the group last year. LONDON (AP) -- TV cook Jennifer Paterson, one of the ``Two Fat Ladies'' who joyfully salted their recipes with political incorrectness, died Tuesday. She was 71 and had lung cancer. Miss Paterson fell ill in July during filming of ``Two Fat Ladies,'' a cooking show where the colorful chefs were the main course. Perfectly happy to be plump, the women toured the country on Miss Paterson's old Triumph motorcycle -- she in the driving seat and Clarissa Dickson Wright, in Red Baron-style helmet, squeezed into the sidecar. They went from one cooking job to the next, chortling and trading wry quips about food, love and life and happily loading their food with butter and cream. Miss Dickson Wright once called the program ``a cookery show with anarchy and a motorbike.'' The chain-smoking Miss Paterson, often filmed with a cigarette clamped firmly in her mouth, spoke with a ver-r-r-y upper-class accent and boomed out her opinions at will. The program appears in the United States, both on public television and on cable stations. - ----- Sent using MailStart.com ( http://MailStart.Com/welcome.html ) The FREE way to access your mailbox via any web browser, anywhere! # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 06:24:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Jane Fondle Subject: (exotica) Re: Exotica Question Lenny, this doesn't ring ma' bell, but I will forward it to the exotica list!
