As far as I know, it's still available on CD. It's a tough sound to describe -- some Latin elements, but not as traditionally Latin as some of his 50's stuff. Very groovy. They make a good duo -- Tjader's vibe playing mellows the often violent piano style of Palmieri. Likewise, Palmieri's playing helps to liven up the lack of dynamics that sometimes characterizes vibes music. Welcom to the list Danny, It's been a good day for records today. I'm listening to "Hello Amigos" The Ames Brothers under the Direction of Juan Garcia Esquivel. And it is like listening to any of the Esquivel records, especially when the boys from Boston take a break singing and the man can almost let loose. "Explosive Brass Impact" Warren Cline and his Brass Impact Orchestra Vol 2. Some friends here have passed on some copies of this series to me, but not this one and they deliver on their promise of Pow!Pow!Pow! POW! An Overwelming Music Experience". Nice wordless vocals. I needed another version of "Gregory Girl". Henry Jerome "Brazen Brass Zings the Strings" I’ve got some of the other Brazen Brass series... After an adventurous "Holiday For Strings" it seems to be all downhill. "Sing a Song With Riddle" Ok I've haven't listened to this yet. The description: “YOU are the solo star, with big orchestra backgrounds by NELSON RIDDLE (Booklet complete with music and lyrics enclosed)." Have you, like me, been guilty of speeding down the highway, car speakers blaring and singing along with Frank? "My Baby Cares Just For Meeeee!!!!!!! When they are that loud you think you almost sound good. But that’s Frank your hearing! Not You! I have a voice that will choke an ostrich. I’ll wait until the family goes out. Aloha Fellow Exoticats, Here is some VERY good news......... Collectables CD label is releasing a Les Baxter two-fer on October 17th. It will include both "Tamboo" and "Skins!". It will also have 3 bonus tracks but they are just standard lush material. Kind of weird to see these albums on one CD. Kind of mismatched if you ask me. "Ritual" and "Tamboo" would have made a more logical pair but hey, we'll take what we can get right? I hope they do more. The next logical two-fer in my mind would be both "Jungle Jazz" and "African Jazz" on one CD. I really hope this CD does phenomenal so Capitol may get a clue about the importance of this man and his music. Similarly, with the right combination of RCA to 1/8" stereo headphone jacks, you can hook it into the back of your sound card (or Mac). From there, you need some sort of "recording" software that will record incoming sound to WAV files, then MP3 software that will compress the WAV to an MP3. How you hook it all together is up to you. Let's get our terms straight. If we can. I know it's all in the ear of the beholder but to these ears, Andy Williams may be easy but he ain't cheesy. Cheesy is another thing. I'd accept cheesy to describe Engelbert. Maybe Neil Diamond. And SOME Ray Conniff. Not those fifties wordless vocal ones that start with the letter "S" followed by an apostrophe but some of the later ones like "Happiness Is" (and I know that some people here love that tune.) The thing about easy versus cheesy is that eventually many "guilty pleasures" just become pleasures. Those cheesy things you enjoy in an ironic kind of way often turn into things you simply enjoy. Then you're in trouble. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info exotica" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email exotica@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 09:33:49 +0100 From: Charles Moseley Subject: RE: (exotica) disco Disco or Hi-NRG, either way I have a major fetish for synthesiser touting San Francisco resident Patrick Cowley. Megatron Man (1980 - I have a German and US release. The German version is less overtly homosexual) is by far the best synthesiser LP I've ever heard with some excellent vocoder, Moog, tape loops and effects. The 2nd LP I think is called Technological World (not 100% sure about this one) but is also very cool and extremely inventive - very contemporary sounding, with the same tape loops, synth arrangements, vocoders, etc. The third one I found is Paul Parker's LP called Too Much to Dream. This is all Patrick Cowley (his boyfriend) with more of the same synth work with Paul crooning over the top a little too much. Around the same time Patrick was doing this third LP with his boyf, he must have been remixing Donna Summer's I Feel Love for Giorgio Moroder, turning out the best club 12" ever! In 1982, he died of aids - shame. Fourth generation discussions about > many artists are "becomeing tiresome" We need some fresh meat to roast And to give it a start: When browsing through the vinyl mines of America I hardly ever found record bins called disco; the referring discs where always filed under funk and soul. So it pretty much looks as if disco is a European term. In the 70s funk and soul where expressions familiar only to outsiders and djs in Europe - as far as I can remember. Disco seems to be the European imitation of funk and soul, and "European" in this case includes continental European countries like France, Holland, Germany, Italy, Sweden. In the disco market there were a lot of internationally successful continental European acts. You cold say, that with disco continental Europe got its foot into the international pop market, that was entirely dominated by English and American productions before. At least Europe got its foot into the European market. I don't know how successful European disco was in America, acts like Abba, A La Carte, Amanda Lear, Baccara, Blone On Blonde, Boney M, Belle Epoque (do they all start with A or B?) or Silver Convention... I do know however that for me this kind of music at that time was absolutely "impossible". Me and my friends we hated it, just as we hated Easy Listening in the 60s, instead we listened to Jazz and later Punk or Rap. So just like the music this list is based on, I discovered the pleasures of disco music much later, which makes it seem quite compatible with Easy to me. Even much much later - when I was already in the Exotica list - I discovered that there were some producers of disco, who could very well compete with the celebrated avant garde producers of the 70s, above all Giorgio Moroder, who started Donna Summers career. So I guess there should be a lot to discover in the world of disco for those of you who haven't yet. As the first celeb aids victim ever! (as if that would help) I like him too, his style is really straightforward, but glamorous, nothing for sensitive swingers... As for High Energy... that was an episode in disco history, a weird mix of some sort of tango rhythm (??) with a straight disco beat. Did anybody ever pick that up in recent times? The biggest is probably the HI-NRG Total Eclipse of the Heart but I've heard terrible, 150 BPM versions of Abba, Village People, Elaine Paige and Barbara Dixon, Foreigner, Bryan Adams, etc etc. Scary! It's also got a great version of the "A Man and a Woman" theme. My recent finds this weekend were: Yma Sumac - Legend of the Jivaro Similar to the Sun Virgin album, but without the orchestration. Mostly the sounds of “Natives” chanting in the background. But what a cover! A beautiful picture of Yma staring out into space while leaning over a steaming cauldron of who knows what. I know this is available on CD, but I couldn’t resist when I saw this shot. Martin Denny - Afro-Desia Wow. I think this is my favorite Denny album so far. An amazing variety of musical sound and atmosphere. To my ears it seems to have a slightly lighter touch than some of the other albums, and the singers really add to the whole effect. Bert Kaempfert - Love that Bert Kaempfert Fairly sleepy stuff for the most part, but it does contain a fantastic version of “Caravan”, featuring some fuzz-sounding guitar. Worth getting for that alone. - - bruce ++++++++++++++++++++ Lenkei Design / Graphic Design www.lenkeidesign.com ++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Visit The Exotica Review As many exotica/lounge record reviews as possible! on the web at: www.bway.net/~er ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
