You can view it here: http://www.fractalus.com/misc/png-jpeg.htm Although I don't explicitly state this in the page, the assumption is made that we're concerned about images for distribution on the net. For archival purposes, there's no question that PNG is better. I consider that an entirely different issue. This example page contains a somewhat large number of graphics, including a few PNG files for comparison. It will take several minutes to download all of the graphics, but there's plenty of text to read while you wait. :-) Damien M. If I use JPEG to compress my GIF files (coming from fractint) en I want to reuse my images in fractint, what must I do? I convert my JPEG files back to GIF and read them in fractint? Jones" Subject: Re: AW: (fractint) PNG vs. JPEG Jan, - If I use JPEG to compress my GIF files (coming from fractint) en I want - to reuse my images in fractint, what must I do? Keep your GIFs, or save the parameters in PAR files, for later regenerating. I use JPEG for online display, but I keep GIFs and PAR files both (for redundancy) on my system. Basically, what Ian said. :-) FractInt throws an extra chunk into the GIF files it saves that contains the parameter information. If you load a FractInt GIF into another program, then save it, you've lost the FractInt information at that point--because the other program assumes the FractInt data isn't important and it doesn't know what to do with it. - Is it also "damaged" by the compression algorithm of JPEG or not? JPEG is lossy, as I explained in the web page. Done properly, the loss is minimal and well worth the reduction in file size, but even at the lowest compression settings, there is still some loss. (There is a totally lossless JPEG, but few apps directly support it.) This means every time you open a JPEG and save it, you are introducing a little bit of loss. For web presentation, this isn't an issue, but if you're still editing and making changes to an image, don't use any form of lossy compression--use lossless compression or no compression. Damien M. You are right on. In fact....if you tamper in ANY way with your original Fractint GIF, you lose all of the associated information. So.....keep the original if you want to open it in the future in Fractint to further zoom, change parameters, colors, etc. Even reducing the size of a Fractint GIF or adding one's name to the GIF will produce a useless file for further Fractinting.
