That's a good question and I think we all ask it a few times a day at least! As to your others -- you can't view formulae but you can view the .par files. Get Fractint up and running and hit 2, then select the name of any .par and . Then to see how the image was made, use z to find the formula used and the numbers plugged into it. Use x to find the basic options used. This will teach you a lot, and pretty fast. Every new image you yourself make will use the default map. It's ugly. I suspect that was deliberate, to get us started playing with color. e will get the palette up on the screen and after you do that, you can use l (that's the "L" key) to load a new colormap. Almost anything will seem preferable. Some will be phenomenal. (You can get more maps from the Fractint site, as well as a lot more .par and .frm files.) Probably the best friend you will have in Fractint is the help file. That's F3. And there is no such thing as "doing a fractal wrong." You may not like the results but .......it won't be "wrong" -- it will just be in need of more changes...... Good luck! I don't know very much about the math end of this art form, so I'd prefer some thing that doesn't require too much math knowlege. I've found Fractint to be great in this respect, whereas Stephen Ferguson's programs don't come very naturally to me. It is also important that it supports par files, or something similar. I *love* looking at the pars from this list, and I want to be able to continue to do that. Lastly, the price. Freeware is great, obviously. Surely Winfract and Fractint can be used to create >200 dpi pictures for printing. Still, initial focusing on the dpi parameter will confuse you - as you already discovered. The way around it is to focus on image resolution in pixels rather in dots per inch. If you need a say 5"x5" picture at 200 dpi, you will need a picture on 5"x200pixels/inch = 1000x1000 pixels. You can easily make Winfract generate such a picture and save it. Then use a photo-editor to set the dpi parameter. AFAIR Paint Shop Pro doen't feature this in a user-friendy way, but other programs like Corel PhotoPaint og Adobe PhotoShop handles it nicely. The needed function is called "resample", "resize" or the like, and it offers fitting of interdependant parameters such as dpi, width, hight (in both pixels and/or inches) and file-size. GIF and BMP does not offer an dpi parameter, so save the edited picture as a JPG or TIF file; then image size parameters such as dpi and size in inches are saved along the picture data. To resume: The dpi parameter is not inherent to the picture, but set arbitrarily. A picture on fx 1000x1000 pixels can thus be printed 5"x5" at 200 dpi, 2½"x2½" at 400 dpi, 1"x1" at 1000 dpi etc. Calculate backwards and you will know how large an image you'll nedd Winfract to generate. Hope you'll get some nice prints! It is a windows program doing true color images and if you know Fractint you will adapt easily to it (it has a Fractint compatibility window). The program is Dofo--Zon and you can download it at ftp://ftp-hs.iuta.u-bordeaux.fr/twggfa 2 files to download ------------------------------------------------------------------------- J.P. Copy the formula as xxxx.frm. There is a freeware program called Programmer's File Editor which is great for this. (I don't have the URL handy, probably could find it or do a search.) If you save it using notepad I think you have to save it with quotation marks " xxxx.par" so it is purely a text file. If you run into any trouble doing this there have been a lot of messages here about that and I can send a copy to you. Oh, also Les St. Clair saves them all up every month into a zip file and you can download all the formulas in one bunch from his web site: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Les_StClair/ - -------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for using Fractint, The Fractals and Fractint Discussion List Post Message: fractint@lists.xmission.com Get Commands: majordomo@lists.xmission.com "help" Administrator: twegner@phoenix.net Unsubscribe: majordomo@lists.xmission.com "unsubscribe fractint" ------------------------------ End of fractint-digest V1 #345 ******************************
