Last night I couldn't find an earlier version DOS boot disk, but I must have one somewhere. The djgpp compiler comes with a program called cwsdpmi.exe that provides DPMI services. It is probably just a question of running this, however I can't test it until I get a DOS environment with no DPMI. What I may do it put the 22k program on my FTP site (it's free) and let those of you who can't run makefcfg try it. I have only had two reports. The Linux version (at present) makes no use of assembly language, and is probably quite a bit slower than the DOS version. Our hope for the future is to get Fractint completely inside a 32 bit memory environment and port some of the assembler for the most critical bottlenecks for both Windows and Linux.  I wrote the sound drivers from the original Soundblaster card
documentation so an AWE32 should work as long as it's backward
compatible with the old card as regards the FM synth. I haven't tested
it on an AWE32 myself but believe it should work.... can anyone verify
this?

You could try checking the sound mixer control in windows,  try
turning up all the controls and if you're using the windows standard
mixer  then make sure you've checked out the mixer properties and have
all possible controls enabled.

Hope this helps,
                       Robin.

(2) Note that in the second par I have the formula file as "kmitchel.frm" rather than s.frm. ================================================================================================= Times New Romands67 { ; (c) David Shanholtzer Sep 21, 1999 t= 0:01:34.96 ; P200 MMX 1024x768 reset=2000 type=formula formulafile=_s.frm formulaname=starnear_man center-mag=-1.905e-006/1.0165e-005/0.6666712 params=1/1/0.8/1 float=y decomp=256 colors=00000e0e00eee00e0eeL0eeeLLLLLzLzLLzzzLLzLzzzLzzz000555<<3>HHHKKKOO\ O<<3>ccchhhmmmssszzz00z<<3>z0z<<3>z00<<3>zz0<<3>0z0<<3>0zz<<2>0GzVVz<<3>zVz<<3>zV\ V<<3>zzV<<3>VzV<<3>Vzz<<2>Vbzhhz<<3>zhz<<3>zhh<<3>zzh<<3>hzh<<3>hzz<<2>hlz00S<<3>S0\ S<<3>S00<<3>SS0<<3>0S0<<3>0SS<<2>07SEES<<3>SES<<3>SEE<<3>SSE<<3>ESE<<3>ESS<<2>EHSKK\ S<<2>QKSSKSSKQSKOSKMSKK<<2>SQKSSKQSKOSKMSKKSK<<2>KSQKSSKQSKOSKMS00G<<3>G0G<<3\ >G00<<3>GG0<<3>0G0<<3>0GG<<2>04G88G<<2>E8GG8GG8EG8CG8AG88<<2>GE8GG8EG8CG8AG88G\ 8<<2>8GE8GG8EG8CG8AGBBG<<2>FBGGBGGBFGBDGBCGBB<<2>GFBGGBFGBDGBCGBBGB<<2>BGFBG\ GBFGBDGBCG000<<6>000 } ========================================================================================= star { ; (c) David Shanholtzer Sep 21, 1999 t= 0:01:44.47 ; P200 MMX 1024x768 reset=1960 type=formula formulafile=kmitchel.frm formulaname=starnear_man center-mag=-1.905e-006/1.0165e-005/0.6666712 params=1/1/0.8/1 float=y decomp=256 colors=00000e0e00eee00e0eeL0eeeLLLLLzLzLLzzzLLzLzzzLzzz000555<<3>HHHKKKOO\ OSSSWWW___ccchhhmmmssszzz00z<<3>z0z<<3>z00<<3>zz0<<3>0z0<<3>0zz<<2>0GzVVz<<3>zV\ z<<3>zVV<<3>zzV<<3>VzV<<3>Vzz<<2>Vbzhhz<<3>zhz<<3>zhh<<3>zzh<<3>hzh<<3>hzz<<2>hlz00\ S<<3>S0S<<3>S00<<3>SS0<<3>0S0<<3>0SS<<2>07SEES<<3>SES<<3>SEE<<3>SSE<<3>ESE<<3>ESS<<2\ >EHSKKS<<2>QKSSKSSKQSKOSKMSKK<<2>SQKSSKQSKOSKMSKKSK<<2>KSQKSSKQSKOSKMS00G<<3\ >G0G<<3>G00<<3>GG0<<3>0G0<<3>0GG<<2>04G88G<<2>E8GG8GG8EG8CG8AG88<<2>GE8GG8EG8CG\ 8AG88G8<<2>8GE8GG8EG8CG8AGBBG<<2>FBGGBGGBFGBDGBCGBB<<2>GFBGGBFGBDGBCGBBGB<<2\ >BGFBGGBFGBDGBCG000<<6>000 } davides@pipeline.com ds30@umail.umd.edu Back up my hard drive? But how do I make Fractint find my MAP files?<<< The same way as FRM, IFS, etc., e.g.: map=c:\fractint\mymaps >>>* I am used to RGB settings ranging from 0 to 255, and the system used by Fractint still confuses me a bit. Are there any translation tables available anywhere?<<< If you look inside a fractint MAP file you will notice that it defines colors in 0 to 255 RGB triplets as do most 24 bit systems. However, if you look more closely you will see that all the numbers are divisible by 4. This gives you only 262144 to choose from. This is the number of colors that were available on the original VGA video cards for DOS. Also, as you probably already know, fractint is limited to a pallete of only 256 colors at a time, so you will see 256 triplets in a map file. I don't think fractint will crash if you put a number in a map file that is not divisible by 4 - it will just round it off. Does this answer your question? If not, please email me. Can anybody >please tell us oldfashioned 19.6 users what it means and what it is all about? The evolver (or parameter evolver / explorer to give it it's full title) is a new addition to fractint which enables the erstwhile fractanaut to map out the effects of changing parameters on a fractal. It will put onscreen many small versions of the base image with parameters changed so that the user can explore the way in which the fractal varies when things are changed on the X,Y,Z menus. This can be done in an orderly fashion with parameters varying smoothly across the screen to form a map of parameter space which can be zoomed into and explored. Alternatively there is evolving mode where everything is varied at random and the user just needs to pick the image variation that they like the best to use as the seed for another generation of images. Things can be set up so that the amout of random mutation from one generation to the next is reduced in order to fine tune things. The evolver is really best seen rather than explained so why not download v20.0 now and check out the demos included! Hope this tempts you :-) Robin. - -------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for using Fractint, The Fractals and Fractint Discussion List Post Message: fractint@lists.xmission.com Get Commands: majordomo@lists.xmission.com "help" Administrator: twegner@phoenix.net Unsubscribe: majordomo@lists.xmission.com "unsubscribe fractint" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Sep 1999 0:29 0000 From: comdotatdotcom@csi.com Subject: RE: (fractint) RE: Bug in the evolver Hi Ricardo, >Did you receive the .par and the files I sent you some days ago? >Could you spot the problem? Yes, as soon as I get the CD set up, burned, and mailed out to the volunteer duplicators, I can get the files zipped up and available for download. It's a big download, too; 75M when all zipped together. Damien M. Thanks to several people (but especially Ken Childress) for bringing these problems to my attention. Voting is now fully functional. You may submit your votes and you should receive a confirmation code via e-mail. You must then mail back that confirmation code for your vote to be registered. CDs will be sent out to volunteer duplicators tomorrow, so they should start appearing in mailboxes next week. Several people have ordered, I will see if I can start confirming receipt of these tomorrow. Damien M.
