But how many have heard of room-102, which holds the best thing in the world? Like the contents of room-101, the contents of room-102 are different for each individual. Some might find a vision of the Deity. In my case, it might be the ability to visualize four- dimensional objects, (if such an ability is possible). Or it might be one of those mystical experiences that are reported to be so effective at solving the mystery of existence, but which so few experience. Or it might be a real live fractal. Today in room-102 we found a fractal -- the Mandelbrot set enlarged to many times the size of the visible universe. Of course, only an infinitesimal part of the entire set could fit into such a small room, so we found only a midget located near the tip of the negative stem. The midget is invisible however. It clearly lies at the center of the image, but several dozen more in-zooms would be necessary to reveal it, and then it would merely be a series of circles spoiled by moire patterns. Instead of going all the way to the midget, I stopped at the point where the number of converging elements resets from 64 to 8 before once again resuming its bifurcation. This bifurcation is a sign that the invisible midget belongs to the family of midgets of a larger midget rather than to the overall M-set itself. The unusual pattern, with its in-thrusting fingers, is caused by the closeness of the scene to the cut-off point of 2. To see how close it actually is, check the real value of the center coordinates. With a magnitude over 10^73, the image lies well into the range of arbitrary precision, and therefore requires almost 2 hours to render on my machine. It can be seen faster by downloading the 6-rated image from the internet at: or: but first give Paul and Scott a chance to render and post it. The fractal weather today was sunny, muggy and very warm. The temperature of 88F 31C, combined with the high humidity, was too much for the cats, who returned indoors after only a few minutes on the porch. Just after sunset, a very noisy thunder-storm passed over, which sent them scampering for cover behind the sofa. And now, I think I'll scamper on down to the nearby fast-food emporium for a junky breakfast. Then I'll check a few of the stories in the October issue of the 'Analog' sci-fi-and-fact magazine, which has a very interesting editorial. Until I re-appear, take care, and does one ever grow bored with fractals? While only a subscriber for 3.5 of the 4+ years Jim has posted, I too appreciate the daily "lift" - both intellectual and emotional - provided by Jim's elegant posts.

A concern - perhaps unique to me - is that this impressive body of work may well go the way of many such on-line labors of love that exist in the erasable world of cyberspace: obscurity, and ultimately, disappearance.

Let's face it, even the best quality high-resolution large-format color prints of such images eventually fade, smear and flake off. And the accompanying narratives, which are as appealing and educational as the images themselves, are likely to become separated.

In contrast, the same image printed on high-quality acid-free paper would last forever (or at least as long as any books last).

In my humble opinion, Jim's thesis "that complicated formulas are not necessary for new and unusual fractals" and his elegant daily demonstations, deserve to be published.

I - for one - would certainly pay the price (~$75) that Publishers tell me such a 1- or 2-Volume compendium would cost. (Heck, the arithmetic is easy: the $.08/page cost of using a color printer to reproduce just 1000 of Jim's >1500 existing images, Pars and Commentaries already exceeds the COGS to produce them in the form of a hardbound book or 2-vol set)

1500 people download Jim's images every day. Commercial publishers tell me that 5000 copies is a typical press run for the first printing of a graphics intensive-book. I'm quite sure that for every person interested enough to have found them and download them from the Web, there would be another 2 who would see the "book with the pretty pictures" in a bookstore (Borders, Barnes& Noble, etc.) let alone via Amazon.com.

So even if it were just another random "coffee-table book" for Xmas, 2001, it would be profitable for a Publisher and for Jim.

That means it's do-able. I know I'd want one. Anyone else out there interested  ?????????

For a little history on the FOTD, Jim made a posting on April 12,
1997 to the Fractal-Art List which started the whole thing.  And here
is a portion of that message:

"I'll try to post a different image every day, until I make my point
that complicated formulas are not necessary for new and unusual
fractals."

That first FOTD was the "SnakeTree" formula and PAR.  And it has been
a most wonderous daily affair for all involved over the past 4-1/3
years.

And I would like to second the sentiment in the last paragraph. I
have been enjoying them since I joined this list. Thank you, Jim, and
they guys who publish your efforts on the net.

IMHO, AN ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC IDEA. CD burns are an everyday affair. No third parties, no BS overhead, etc, etc.

Now, if we could just get this "Muth" guy on board . . . .

Perhaps it doesn't matter: persistent rumors have suggested  that the "fractal cats" are actually the ones reponsible for the daily posts anyway.

This theory was given some credence recently based on FBI & CIA interviews with two feline- Americans [one d/b/a as "Tippy T. Tabby", the other as "Thomas T. Oversized-Yellow-Orange- One"] at a safe-house in the Washington DC-Baltimore area.

Only time will tail  tell . . . .

It would be interesting to have a book printed with the first few years
of FOTDs (whatever it would take to make the first volume).  And it
would be nice to see Jim profit from such a venture.  But I do not

I have been toying with the idea of a FOTD CD for some time. Such a disk would include all the images and the long version of the discussions, which were posted only to the philofractal list. With Tim's permission, I could also include the latest version of the Fractint program. I am set up to burn CD's. The only problem is a lack of time to gather the elements and edit the superfluous material from the discussion files. The coffee-table book is a good idea, but impractical. The number of FOTD's must be near 1600 by this time. I have all the images safely saved, but a few FOTD discussions (35 or so) were lost when I suffered a disk crash a couple years ago. The missing discussions, which I have not yet identified, can probably be supplied by Paul, who I assume has all the discussions on file. If I see any real interest in such a project, I'll certainly have a go at it. A little extra income could buy many treats for the cats, who enjoy fractals but are too lazy to find any of their own. FOTD for September 02 coming in 12 hours. I wrote in yesterday's discussion that the as-yet invisible midget at the center was probably nothing more than circles ruined by moire patterns. Today I had to check to see if I was right. As the rating of 4 shows, my suspicions were correct. Everything close to the midget is indeed an un-resolved mess. A log color palette would have cleared up a lot of the mess near the midget, which could use another thousand or so iterations. But when I tried the log palette, the area close to the midget became totally flat and featureless. Enjoying chaos a bit more than featurelessness, I decided to use the linear color palette. The name "Land of Sunflowers" is more of a play on words than an accurate description, though the resemblance to an actual sunflower is reasonably apparent. The circular character of the features surrounding the midget is one of the greatest flaws with very deep midgets -- by the time the midgets actually become visible, they all look the same. The parameter file is attached for reference purposes. It can be run, but only the foolhardy would attempt to do so. The only practical way of viewing the image is to give Paul and Scott a few hours to render and post it, and then pick it up from either of their web sites. The URL's of the FOTD web sites are: and: After the big electrical storm last evening, the weather turned cooler and much less humid today. The partly cloudy skies and temperature of 84F 29C were appreciated by the fractal cats, who finally came out from behind the sofa. It's now time to enjoy the evening by settling into my favorite chair and watching the junkiest old sci-fi movie I can dredge up. The full philofractal version of today's discussion will appear on the philofractal list in 12 hours or so. Until next FOTD, take care, and don't get duplicated.
