From: "Richard Holdman" Subject: (hats) new MWH album in the next few years? Date: 03 Aug 1999 14:17:58 -0600 I received a e-mail from Richard Lupien telling me great information about MWH. Stefan wrote him and said this to Richard in his e-mail. "As for the adventures of MWH in the future, it is somewhat probable that we may have a new album in the next millenium. Is that a definite maybe or what?" Now that would be cool! Also Richard has been kind enough to send me some photos of IVAN. I have put them up on my web page at http://www.holdman.com/mwh/pictures.html Thanks Richard -Richard Holdman # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info hats" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email hats@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Men Without Hats discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?hats ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Woody Zenfell" Subject: (hats) The Same Halo Date: 04 Aug 1999 03:20:12 -0500 I just thought I'd chime in with my own pleasure listening to this. There have been a few questionable MWH auctions in the past.. >>> >>> from randy@daydream-graphics.com >>> It just so happens that my drummer works at ebay, taking down auctions. It just takes an email to get an illegal auction taken down- it's very simple. Just remember to include the item# URL as Heather did, and mention why it's illegal (people can sell cassettes, and you can't prove they are dubs unless you bought one, but if [a recording] was never released on tape, there you go). Repeat offenders get their accounts pulled (of course they can start it again from a new email address). Huge offenders can be busted- ebay works with various companies who prosecute the worst piraters. As of this writing the auction is down, but you can do this very easily for any artist you feel is being exploited on ebay. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sundstrom" Subject: (hats) Someone is selling the MWH bootlegs on EBay Date: 16 Aug 1999 02:43:48 -0600 Hello fellow MWH fans, I remember reading a posting that somebody submitted to the mailing list a few days ago about how to remove illegal auctions from EBay. I just noticed one of the bootlegs that was produced, I'm sure, by the MWH mailing list being auctioned on EBay. The url for the auction is: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=147051932 . The thing that bothers me about the auction is how much the seller is asking for the cd. The auction is currently at $36.00 and the seller has set a reserve price that must be higher than $36.00 since the reserve price hasn't yet been met. Does this bother anybody else besides me?? This is one of the reasons that I thought that having an organized release of the live recordings where people could pay a "fair price" for the cd was great, rather than having to be screwed over by someone trying to make a huge profit on something. And, as with all boots, the band gets nothing. I know that the issue of Richard Holdman's selling of the bootleg cd's is no longer an issue of conversation on this mailing list, but I guess I would still like to see these recordings maybe released by the "official MWH web site" for purchase at a fairprice so that fans who want to be able to buy these cd's will have a location where they can buy them at a fair price and so that Ivan, Stefan, and other MWH members can reap the profits of the cd's sold. Anyway, I just thought I would bring this issue up to the list. I thought about reporting the illegal posting to EBay, but decided against it in case it was someone on this list. Anyways, Take Care. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info hats" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email hats@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Men Without Hats discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?hats ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mike Subject: Re: (hats) Someone is selling the MWH bootlegs on EBay Date: 16 Aug 1999 12:13:31 +0100 >Does this bother anybody else besides me?? it annoys me no end!!! Get real...... Date: 19 Aug 1999 00:16:08 -0700 I do not post often to this list, but the latest discussion regarding "reporting" the Hats boot sale on Ebay makes me break my silence. Why in the world would someone want to report this to Ebay?! As strange as it may sound, not every MWH fan in the world knows about the list and had the chance to get their hands on the wonderful CD's that were released over the last year or so. This should be clear in that there are bidders on the disk. I think those that are so eager to tattle on the seller should put themselves in the shoes of the lucky soul who found the item listed on Ebay. Have we forgotten the thrill of getting the CD in the mail and listening to the first "new" MWH in many years. Why are we in a rush to spoil that chance for someone else? Granted, the person selling the disk may have broken the spirit of the project, but the disk's are illegal to begin with so what is the big gripe now? I find it rather sad that as we clutch onto our 10 plus illegal MWH CD's, we bemoan some lucky person the chance to buy one. Heaven knows if the person selling the disk had something to offer that we did not have already, all of us would be scrambling to win that bid and there would be little talk of reporting the person to anyone. So why don't we slow down a little on the running to Ebay and complaining about the potential transaction. Sit back, put on one of the MWH boot's in your collection and be glad that yet another fan of MWH will get the chance to enjoy some great music. Heaven 17 (the other ones) have just released their first live album via the net with just 1000 copies available (see www.heaven17.com ), so these things are possible. Whether there's any financial benefit for the band or it's just a goodwill gesture I don't know. I think we should feel sorry for the people who are forced to pay $30-$40 for a disc when we got it at cost, but it wasn't so long ago people on this list were just as willing to pay $100, $200 or more for a Folk or Rhythm cd (before they were re-released) -- And I, a die-hard fan, certainly considered selling my copies of the original Folk and Rhythm when they were fetching that amount just because I couldn't believe I could get that much (I didn't sell, of course). As for the guy selling it, I am irritated some true fan lost his chance to buy it at a great deal so this guy could make a profit. But, like someone recently said on the list, maybe they had no clue it (or this list) existed and eBay is their only chance at ever finding this rare MWH material. That said, I'll go back to lurking. When you think about it.... why should a fan auction off a cd that he or = she received exclusively from a member of the list? The person who put the = cd's together did so at cost. If he had known that a person was going to = sell the cd I'm sure he wouldn't make it available to them at such a great = price. It is just as easy, if not easier, to join the list than it is to sign up = for ebay. The cd could then be made availble for sale or trade, at cost = plus shipping etc... to other listees who weren't able to get the cd's = when they were available. This would be the politically correct way of making the cd available. On the other hand there was recently a collection of 24 Crowded House club = cd's auctioned off on ebay for close to $3,000 by a retailer who collected = them. This was promoted on the Crowded House list which frowns upon those = who would like cdr's of the cd's that were available before they joined = the official fan club (and the fan club refuses to make more available. = Presumably to drive up the value of the cd's originally pressed and bother = those who couldn't afford them as a side effect). So who knows? Higher = demand =3D higher value. Looks like Stephan has inadvertantly driven up the value of MWH's fan cds = so we should expect to see more cd's up for auction by fans who aren't = exactly big enough fans to pass up on making a few bucks. Thus penalizing = fans who just want to hear the music. This may be a good chance to pick up "Pop..." or "Sideways" if you don't already have it. Prices were a little steep: over $20 USD for them. But "Very Best Of" was only $12.99 USD. I also searched for Ivan and found not only "The Spell", but a 12" of something called, "Six Forty Five". Is this something new from Ivan, or is this a different Ivan?
