Sundstrom" Subject: (hats) "MWH" Shirts Date: 13 Apr 2000 01:36:50 -0600 I don't have a MWH shirt either. I wish I did. I was hoping that Stefan would be selling MWH shirts via his web page, as I seem to remember that he was planning to do so, but as while recently checking his MWH Official Web Page I didn't see any mention of this. (by the way, Stefan, if you do plan on selling t-shirts, how about offering a few XXL sizes for fat-asses such as myself). However, I do have the MWH logo for my computer's wall paper at work. I've used the Neon-blue and red logo that is now on the MWH Official site and tiled it across my screen. It's amazing how many people come up and ask me where I got it from. A lot of people come up and ask me about the band and whether or nor they are still together. As to this mailing list being dead...yeah, probably it is a bit...but I'm sure it will take off again when the new compilation cd that Stefan and Ivan are putting out is available. It seems that there just hasn't been a lot to talk about lately. I found it ironic that Richard stated "this list is dead" in his last message, as I was thinking the same thing myself recently. I had recently joined a mailing list for another of my favorite bands, The Alarm. I'm getting about 20 messages a day from that list, most of which are talking about the upcoming release of a box set by The Alarm. And, even though The Alarm broke up quite some time ago, Twist, the drummer from the band still contributes his thoughts to the list. Also, Dave Sharp's wife, Erin, contributes her thoughts to the list. So...there is info from those who are close to "whats happening" with the band and with the solo projects of those who used to be in the band. During the time I've been on this list, there hasn't been much heard from anybody who has any official ties to the MWH gang besides the infamous bootleg incident and the subsequent comments from Stefan. A comment here or there from Stefan or Ivan about upcoming MWH news, or even side project news would generate a lot of discussion, I'm sure. In fact, I've been wondering what happened to the pop music project that Ivan was working on called "Ultimate Pop Machine". I saw it on a web page once, and then the web site was shut down. Well...I've blabbed on enough for now. However I have seen a hat that was sorta a cross between a painters cap and a bike riders hat. It has a drawstring in the back with a bead for adjustment. It is reversible. The bill/visor is a soft foam material that keeps its shape. It would be quite inexpensive I believe. It would also be most easy to make the top (which is a circle!) in yellow and put the logo there large and proud and the entire outer edge of about 3" is then open for more logos or whatever. Mine also has a 'label' attached to the drawstring that is embroidered with a saying. Like perhaps 'We can dance' or something else short. I may take this one (it is many years old and all black) and have the logo airbrushed on the top. I am much more interested in getting a MWH shirt. The website hinted at shirts on the way but I want one for summer (NOW) so I may need to see an airbrusher for my first one. I think if others of you want a shirt or three it would be beneficial to say so on here and someone ,on the list, who has experience in making extremely EXCELLENT creations may be swayed into providing more or perhaps passing the recipe to a list member who owns a Tshirts plus store. At least if people have to ask what it means, we have a hope of bringing them to the light! ;-) I agree with the person who said not a "real" baseball-type cap. I personally don't have to worry about the male pattern baldness issue, but I just look like a dork in a cap with such a high dome. There is another style of baseball cap with a very soft, rounded dome, I think it is much like the painters/bikers cap someone else described. That really put a damper on things here on the list for a long time afterwards, then the legal threats came and everything kinda came to a screeching halt. I've never seen a more devoted and enthusiastic group of people working harder for no profit to support a group. We didn't deserve to be attacked. Ivan is on video autographing the CDs produced by the members of this list - smiling all the while and apparently pleased to have his own copies as well. Sundstrom" Subject: (hats) Most meaningfull MWH song Date: 22 Apr 2000 01:18:20 -0600 Okay, I mentioned recently that I've joined another mailing list for a band from the 80's called "The Alarm". Well, there's been a discussion going on in that list about which album, and which songs from "The Alarm" mean the most to the subscribers of the list. And, even though it's probably been done already on this list, I thought it would be a good topic of conversation since things have died down here a bit lately (which has in itself been a topic of conversation......very sad). Anyway, I love all the MWH songs, but the one that I think I love and relate to the most is "Things In My Life". "Well I think that I'm in Scotland & and I'm walking through the forest in the rain I wonder if I'll fall in love again" By the way....does anybody have any idea how many people subscribe to this list? I know Stefan used to be on it, how about Ivan? I've never read anything from Ivan, or any of the other MWH family. Well...take care and have a great holiday weekend! Favorite album: Can I count the 2-for-1? If not, then I guess I'll be typical and say ROY. Favorite/ most meaningful song: I've always liked "Security." It's very simple, but lyrically it's awesome, and structurally it has a good build to it. For me, Folk of the '80s (Part III) is the album that most impacted my life. It's a very thoughtful and philosophical album, and at the time it was released, I was going through a mental awakening as a teenager, discovering who I truly was inside. That album helped me to lay out my own path. The most meaningful song for me is probably the title track, "Folk of the '80s." Besides stretching my mental and spiritual muscles, I was also expirimenting with different looks at the time. "Don't grow a beard; they'll call you a hippie." "Don't cut your hair; they'll call you a hippie." "Don't cut your beard; they'll call you a hippie." It helped me to realize that others wouldn't understand me no matter how I looked, unless I looked exactly like them (which leads to a lyric from another song... can anyone guess which one?), so I just was myself, and didn't worry about the opinions of others. After all, "Others cry; why should I?" I don't reember it being caused by Stefan's outburst about the bootlegs. The list was very, very quiet way before then. And since then, it peaked a little once in a while. I think the problem at hand is no oen has anything to say :) Or maybe, the majority of users don't have the same amount of time to read and write e-mail as before. I'm like that.... :( So, onto some of the topics discussed so far... I've never consciously thought of which songs meant the most to me....but I think the entire Pop Goes The world album stands out in this respect. The songs provide a very vivid image in my mind when I listen to them. "O Sole Mio", although most likely having nothing to do with the song's meaning, gives me the impression of not being able to tell someone what you want to say. And Ivan's voice sounds very majestic so it makes it feel that he's trying his best to get his message across but just can't do it. Ok, so he's singing about the environment....:) As for the CDs, I have no fear in saying I'm sure there are a few on this list happy enough to make cds for those who don't have any. It happens on all mailing lists and between fellow fans off the Internet. I don't mean to knock Stefan but since this is the age of the mp3 and double-deck tape recorders, and cheaper easier-to-use CD recording software/hardware...there's nothing any lawyer can really do. No one stopped Napster yet.... So we can't askoffer CDs publicly on the list. There's always private e-mail :) Maybe that's why the list has been quiet! :D The show that almost happened...well, it would have been a nice experience if this happened. Not only seeing MWH in concert, or even just Ivan, but also meeting so many people from this list for the first time, plus seeing Montreal for the first time (it would have been my first time there), and I remember an opening act would have been some members of the list jamming. Well...why not for the record release party of the cover cd? ;) A new topic suggestion: Which song would you like remixed? And how? :) Right now from the top of my head I can picture, obviously, "O Sole Mio" as well as "I Sing Last/Not For Tears", and "Walk On Water". A fast remix. I'm sure there'd be lots more I'd love to remix but I can't think of any actually. "Walk On Water" can be sound like the Pet Shop Boys' "Paninaro" remix done by Tin Tin Out. Hm...not a bad idea...a remix project...not by us though, the amount of money that was listed for sampling is too much for me (not that I can remix anyway--I can be a consultant though!). # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info hats" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email hats@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Men Without Hats discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?hats ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Matt McCarthy" Subject: (hats) It would be awesome... but alas! It would be an awesome thing to have a LIVE concert, Men Without Hats, with several opening acts of artists covering M w/o H material, followed by our own list member artists doing the same. And in the Canadian park, near the US border, where this venue was taking place on a beautiful 2 day summer weekend we will have the new cover CD's readily available for sale along with all of the Men w/o Hats released CDs. And making its debut Stefan will have a little 'Winnebago' jam packed with the newest compilation for sale also. Ivan will also be with and he will have created a most astounding graphic Tshirt! A couple of list members will also provide the initial Men Without Hats hat which rivals Ivans graphics. It will be a 2 day event to rival almost anything you can imagine. We find out that the M w/o H list members can throw one %@*& of a party/show. I could probably find a park, anyone else able to provide any pieces of our gig? Book early space is filling up. (I was 16 when it came out in 1987) As such, there are many meaningful songs are tied up on that whole album -- it was one of the albums that was key as I was going through that critical "growing up" stage. I heard about it through a nice chap named Richard Holdman who was handling the MWH Bootleg CD distribution, which caused quite a bit of controversy after Stefan decided to threaten legal action if Richard continued distributing these cds. I've been a MWH fan for as long as I can remember. I saw MWH live in my hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah when they were the opening band for Icehouse on the Icehouse "Man Of Colours" tour. MWH put on an awesome live show, one that I will always remember. I'm not sure what was supposed to have happened with the "show that didn't happen" as I don't remember anything about that...so I probably joined the list shortly after that particular incident. I don't know why you were wanting info on the people who are on the list at this time, but I've wondered the same thing myself. Mabey somebody on the list (I'd do it if no one else wants to) would like to gather data on the people on the list and post it on the web somewhere, mabey starting a website called "Men Without Hats Fan Club" or something like that. I run a web site for another of my favorite bands, The Boomtown Rats (located at http://www.boomtownrats.com) and could easily spare enough room to have a page set up for this purpose. I've been on this list for I don't remember how long. I definitely remember the "Private Concert" discussions. I remember when a bunch of people road-tripped up to Canada to see Ivan in concert. I remember when Dr. Laura just went by Laura. ;-) No, I don't write much, but I enjoy all that goes on here. Except the flame wars. But, then, who enjoys those, anyway? Thankfully, there have been no flame wars recently. I remember that someone on this list maintained a web site that had people's information and pictures, but it was taken down so that it could move to the "Official" Men Without Hats web site. I just checked the official site (http://www.mpgang.com/mwh.html), and there's still no sign of the bio information. But I wasn't expecting it, either. Whoever it was that used to maintain the bio page (if you're still on the list), would you please delete my picture? It's probably about 20 years old now, anyway! :-) Take care, everybody! I'm looking forward to "reading you". Steve Jackson Atlanta, Georgia, USA P.S. So is anyone looking for vinyl copies of the 12" of I Got The Message (Special Extended Remix)/ Freeways (Euromix)/ Utterspace. Or the 12" that has Living In China/ Modern Dancing/ Cocoricci (Le Tango Des Voleurs). Or the 7" Living In China/Cocoricci (Le Tango Des Voleurs). If anyone is interested in any of those drop me a note offlist and make an offer. (figure postage is extra.) I'm not trying to get alot for them but enough to make it worth selling this way. I'm in the US so because of currency differences need to stick with selling to someone also here. I'm only posting this to hats@ so please don't forward or post anywhere else. Yea, I know there's not a big demand for vinyl these days but I know some of you collect anything Hats related. If possible I'd prefer to sell them all to one person since it's easier but will split them up if I need to. =}{= (heidi@apocalypse.org) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info hats" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email hats@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Men Without Hats discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?hats ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Richard Holdman" Subject: (hats) Razormaid Remix of "I got the message" Date: 27 Apr 2000 12:35:52 -0600 This is old news but just a reminder that Razormaid Records is planing on doing a remix of "I got the message" by MWH. Stefan never threatened to sue anyone. If you're going to sue anyone you send a nasty threatening letter from a solicitor, you don't send a flippant email threatening to set the FBI on them. Sense of humour failure on your part , me thinks. The fact remains that Mr Holdman had 9 hours worth of MWH material readily downloadable for free to anyone with internet access. Material that was made by MWH and are entilted to be paid for, much as I thought the site was an excellent resource you have to accept that it was illegal. I think you'll find that MWH's don't have any objection to bootlegs as long as they are done discreetly , which I gather that Stefan/Ivan were happy to condone, after all they let the ROY/FOTE3 demo's become available to interested parties. The gist of it was as I see it that we could continue to swap bootlegs as long as it was between fans and done without shouting about it. Let me tell you a story, once apon a time Paul McCartney ( He played bass in the Beatles) told in an interview how he used to in the early sixties go to concerts and tape them, and also how much he enjoyed doing it and the pleasure he derived from listening to the tapes. Shortly afterwards an English fella was caught and prosecuted for selling bootleg Paul McCartney tapes. He tracked Paul McCartney down and questioned him on the injustice of it all, how he Paul could freely admit to making bootlegs and at the same time prosecute people for doing the same. Paul replied 'Its simple mate, you got caught and I didn't' Which I think sums up the whole bootleg debate really nicely. If you're going to do it, do it descreetly and don't get caught. had the CD's been kept within the list, none of this would have happened. Also the list had 'died' way before Stefan made his guest appearence, I believe it was when it was discovered that Ivan wasn't going to reform MWH circa 1984 and deliver a wish list set, and instead intended to perform his standard set at the time for the mailing list concert. Anyway, spring is on its way, cheer up fella, no need to get pissed off about it. Stefan's actions don't bother me. It's the way in which Stefan chose to implement them that does. He was rather rude and has so far to my knowledge has not apologized for his nasty tone. He didn't have to behave in such a manner in order to get Richard to comply with his wishes. The source for the RoY/Fot80sIII demos has never been revealed to me either. The whole premise surrounding them was that the source not be revealed. Why, I have no idea. So, I cannot assume that Stefan deserves credit for those recordings being in my personal collection - nor Ivan. It would make sense if that were the case, however, I cannot prove it one way or the other. Meanwhile, I simply do not approve of Stefan's tactics and as much as I'd like to, I no longer do for the members of this list what I used to do in order to see that they receive the recordings they seek. (And, believe me, I used to do a *lot* for the members of this list in a totally discreet, behind-the-scenes way.) I also have a track to submit to the covers project but have opted to boycott it as well as long as Stefan stays on his course. If your take is correct, and I would hope that it is, I need to hear it from Stefan directly and not from some third-party intermediary. So not only can I sit through one album, I can sit through all of them in a row. And yet Bjork's voice annoys the hell out of me. Strange. The one that I absolutely can't stand to listen to is the singer from the Cranberries.
