By the PGTW tour it was becoming very smelly. We'd put these sweat soaked leather jackets in it every night which contributed to the problem, but legend has it that the grand majority of the situation was caused by Ivan's shoes during the first tour. Apparantly they became so foul, that they had to be sealed in an air tight plastic bag after each show. Stef had a really unnatural hatred for this case, as if it was possessed, or contained the souls of the damned, and kept trying to get rid of it. One time at at ourdoor show in Raleigh NC, It fell over on my foot just before we went on. My foot swelled up to twice its normal size and I couldn't get my Docs on. I ended up playing the show stoned out of my tree on Tylenol and wearing one shoe. Soon after, I began to mistrust the case as much as Stef. Things would always dissapear into the recesses of this case. I lost my aforementionned rubber pants, a very heavy belt made out of motorcycle chains, a couple of t-shirts, countless hats, and the shirt Ivan wore in the safety dance video, which I wore for the first half of the tour. You can see this shirt in the pics that Myke put on his website. The part you can't see is that the sleeves actually would touch the ground unless I rolled them up. I often wondered why the hell someone would make a shirt like that. By the way, my leather stage jacket hasn't been worn in 7 years, but it STILL smells like that damned wardrobe case! -- Dr. Bruce Murphy Ottawa, Canada Dictator for Life; Underground Miata Network http://www.ottawa.net/~tanner/umn # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info hats" in the message. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Russ Kemsley" Subject: Bruse's Stories Date: 04 Oct 1996 01:01:58 UT Bruce, I just gotta say that I, for one, really appreciate you taking the time to relay these stories to us. Bruce, I too really appreciate the time which you have taken to re-live some of your MWH moments with us drooling Hat-Heads. Regrettably I only ever saw MWH once, in Ottawa, in 1984-85(?) when MWH was touring in support of FOTE Pt.III... but I remember it was a great show (for a gymnasiaum).. and I was always sorry that other matters (such as bizarre gardening accidents befalling Colin, or was it Stefan?) always seemed to prevent a return visit. I was commenting to the list the other week that I have always associated MWH with your other Marc Durand stable-mates, The BOX. I know that both bands come from rather different backgrounds: MWH Anglo/Allophones and The BOX Francophones singing in English; but I always felt that there was a sensibility which both bands shared which was intelligent, contrary and made for good music. I suppose that The BOX was always more verbose in its songs (which is interesting since they were Francos) whereas MWH while it did have provocative lyrics, was much more musically-driven. In your expereience was there much cross-polination between Durand-produced bands, or did you keep to yourselves? Finally, further to Danny's question(s) about the origins of MWH, a friend of mine who used to live in Outremont claimed that his brother briefly played keyboards for, or maybe just tooled around with, MWH in the early days, my friend's brother's name is Cooper Langford. Can you confirm nor deny this rumour? (It is my closest Brush-with-MWH-Fame experience.) "...we walk around for practically all eternity singing... OOO HA O!" Ivan says they played synths because none of them could play really well and it was easy to get good sounds out of them. No one seems to be sure about the name, but I=92ve noticed that the logo is an alteration of a =93Men Working Below=94 sign that they use over manholes in England. I have a sneaking suspicion the logo came before the name. The hats have had so many members, I don=92t think I even know them all. = I don=92t really have up to date info on where anybody is, although I finally got in touch with Ivan last week. Jean-Marc of the Box apparantly used to play for the Hats as did Tracy Howe, who had a neat synth band called Rational Youth. Ivan likes the Box, but there seems to be an overall impression amongst the original Hats that the Box are somewhat derivative, and some might be so mean as to call them a MWH copycat band. The guys from the Box used to hang out with my ex-wife, and I found them pretty nice guys, and I really enjoyed their music. Marc Durand used to stay at my house in Toronto sometimes, but I never told Ivan, as I understand Marc is definitely not a name which provokes kind reminicences around the Hats. Haven=92t seen the Bootleg Vid yet, but I=92ll let you know what I think.= Bizarre gardening accidents? Where did that come from? After 21st Century, the band was just about to tool up for a tour, when Stef met with an unfortunate accident. He was stand on a corner in a snowstorm when a snowplow ran over him, breaking virtually every bone in his body! (One story goes that when his friends ran over to help, he sat bolt upright and said, =93Does my face look O.K.?=94) Anyway, it took quite a while for him to recuperate. Eventually he was able to hobble around on crutches. One night they had a big birthday party for him at Ivan=92s warehouse. Chez Ivan was on the 3rd floor of this building with a staircase that just went straght up, with no switchbacks or landings. Evidently Stef was a bit loaded and was reeling around on his crutches and fell down all the stairs and refractured everything. So this is one reason why there was no 21st Century tour, and it explains why Stef was in a wheelchair in some of the videos. -- = Dr. Bruce Murphy Ottawa, Canada Dictator for Life; Underground Miata Network http://www.ottawa.net/~tanner/umn # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info hats" in the message. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Lazlo Nibble" Subject: Proposed List Format Change Date: 05 Oct 1996 12:21:38 -0600 (MDT) Given a lot of recent complaints, I'm thinking about switching the list configs around some. I have a sneaking suspicion the logo came before > the name. > Hi Bruce, I was doing a little research for Mike Best's bootleg and came up with the following info on the origins of the logo. Here's a quote from my research: One re-occuring comment was reflected in the bands famous logo, a picture of a man wearing a derby-hat cancelled out by a red bar across it. This symbol existed before the bands beginning and was used to show that "a dress-code was not practiced here". In essence this sign encouraged people to dress freely and individually without being influenced by some authority or some other person. This theme runs through many of the band's songs including their biggest hit "Safety Dance" ... Hope this concurs with you. I got my video last week, but didn't have access to a VCR to watch it until tonight (believe me, I tried). In fact I have yet to see most of it; I was unfortunately "sharing vcr time" with some other people and they were more interested in watching the videos multiple times than watching the interviews, concert, etc. But anyway, what I have seen so far is excellent. Honestly I don't watch many videos, but these kinda made me go 'whoa, that's odd' but then brought along a special enjoyment and understanding when I watched them a few more times. (Of course I have yet to figure out 'I Like', but.. :) ) Much like Erasure videos, they seem exceptionally cheap and cheesy at the first watching, but have this curious tendency to grow on you.. :) A few specific comments: I think the PGTW video is really, really cool. I love the little sound effect text items that flash on the screen, but my favourite is when Ivan looks really confused and a ? appears next to him. Also, I really don't like the mix of Moonbeam that accompanies the video. An extra special treat was hearing one of my favourite songs, "I Know Their Name", on the concert portion. I have many copies of Folk..III, but they're all on vinyl, and I'll be damned if I can find someone with a decent turntable so I can get a tape version. So, I literally hadn't heard it in, like, 5 years or something. On a related note, I'd forgotten how cool I Sang Last/Not For Tears was. And ever since Collection came out, I wonder how I ever missed "Where Do the Boys Go?". (I don't remember hearing it before Collection; must've been on the side of Folk..III that _didn't_ have Eurotheme, I Know Their Name, Messiahs, etc.) This stuff is brilliant! My favourite songs are those about the simple joys of youth, now tinged with nostalgia (like Where Do the Boys Go, I Know Their Name, etc.), but MwoH seem to capture so many ideas and feelings that I haven't other bands even approach, I just have to be amazed :) So I guess really I just wanted to add a gigantic "Thanks Tom!!" to the pile rapidly accumulating. And also to be greedy for a minute: I want a bootleg and (while we're producing the MwoH stuff we always wanted but could never get) a whole bunch of MwoH T-shirts. When I was younger, I helped my mother make me a Men Without Hats t-shirt that is now too small for me. It's yellow, and is painted to look just like the Rhythm of Youth album cover, except without the Rhythm of Youth bit. (Just MwoH and the logo.) Tonight I saw all the shirts in the videos (which of course look just like mine except probably a little cleaner graphic and including "Rhythm of Youth") and got insanely jealous. I want one too! Is there some way we can make these? By the way (yeah this is getting long, but I only post about once a year, so.. :) ), it saddens me how Men Without Hats are not a part of today's youth. I work and live in a dorm with freshmen, and this year I discovered that many of them had not even heard the "Safety Dance" before. That was really boggling - even almost everyone my age (I'm a young'un here at 20) knows SD, and a handful have even heard PGTW. Where there many shows on that tour where one show was with Icehouse and one was just Hats? I know there were two shows in Philadelphia for the PGTW tour, but I don't remember how far apart they were. The one I was at was at the Chestnut Cabaret and was just Hats. The other was at the Tower Theater (a much larger place) and was with Icehouse. (I didn't go to that one, but don't remember now why.) I no longer live in Phila. but it's a shame that both clubs I've seen the band are now gone. Ripleys (for the ROY tour) was closed and converted into a Tower Records quite awhile ago, and the Chestnut closed within the last few years. They were both nice places to see local bands or bigger bands who were playing smaller halls. (Btw, someone had said how nice it is to have someone who was with the band on the list. Hi. Tom here. I'd just like to add one or two things here. If you are one of the first 50 people, I've got you taken care of. Now that the PAL tapes are done, the next 30 people will be a breeze, much faster. So if you are not one of the first 50, definately buzz Michael an e-mail. If you are near the end of list, first 50, and don't want to wait another 3 weeks, you can also get one of Micheal's tapes. Just be sure to e-mail me so I can cancel your order. Then some other people (over 50) can get a cool 1st generation tape. Don't get me wrong, I made a point of sending Michael the best looking master tape, since he will be making copies for others. Because I didn't play a lot of guitar during the show, (and because I was lazy) I'd never worry about where my guitar was until I really needed it. We programmed about 13 seconds of radio static before the song figuring this would be enough time for me to find my guitar. Usually I would run around panic-stricken for about 8 seconds, and then out of nowhere, some crew member would drop the guitar over my shoulder. This came to be known as "Guitar Safari". After a while the guys found it kind of amusing to see how long they could wait before they'd give me my guitar. One time I was scrambling around when I noticed the monitor mixer guy waving my guitar at me from the wings, about 6 feet away, so I rushed over to take it out of his outstretched hands. Unfoutunately, even though we were at eye level, he was on a riser about three feet from the stage with a six foot drop between us. I walked right off the stage and almost killed myself. You should be able to get it at any Sam Goody (surprise surprise, they actually carry something non-mainstream - shocker!), or any of the franchises they own. Except here it's called "Collection". It's made by some independent publishing company that makes these compilations. By the way, does "Rhythm of Youth" exist on CD (or has it ever), or am I heralding a lost cause? I'm sure this issue has been beaten to death on this mailing list. But I'd love to get a copy of that on CD. There are some songs on there that just aren't on the Collection CD, like "Ideas for Walls". I have it on LP, but I hate to put that through any wear-and-tear. I have that CD but the track line-up on Greatest Hats is different and that is why I want it. It is only being released in Canada according to Carl and I would assume he'd know since it's his record company, Olgio Records that produced Collection. Thanks for tryin' to help though. About RoY, it doesn't exist in the US as a CD. It was never released in that format here. Stef, for example, became addicted to playing baseball on my Mac in the back of the bus. Most of us became enamoured with those little crane/claw machines that you put a quarter in and try to snag some worthless piece of crap. Truckstops in the southern states all seem to have at least one. One day I managed to get this small stuffed pink foot. Cool, I thought. Instantly, this enormous woman at the cash yells, "hey honey, y'all got the PINK FOOT!", and promptly traded me for the grand prize; a two and a half foot tall stuffed bee. As I'm getting back on the bus, Ivan stops me at the door. "No way. You can't bring that thing on the bus, it's too big! Give it to me." So I hand him this grinning monstrosity and off he runs with this psychotic look in his eye. The other thing that all truckstops in the southern states have besides crane machines is fireworks. Five minutes later, Ivan comes back with the bee, now sporting a handsome belt made out of a half a dozen big rockets. So we sat in the parking lot tring to figure out how to light all the rockets at once. Out comes the band videocam to preserve the first Hat moonshot. We managed to light all the rockets pretty much at once, but the bee only got about three feet off the ground before bursting into flames and crashing to the ground. Then things got interesting. The flaming bee went hurtling along the ground at a terrific speed, chasing various band members and making crazy direction changes. About this time the fat lady comes out of the gas station and starts screaming at us. Stef continues to film her, and gets about three inches from her puffy, red, indignant face.(Which looks ten times more frightening on video) "Those are propane tanks over there! Are you people nuts?" We all smiled and nodded heartily. Paul clubs out the still grinning and burning bee with a baseball bat. After we got the lady calmed down by promising to leave immediately and never come back, we decided we should shoot off our remaining bottle rockets before we left. Unfortunately, the first rocket, which is sitting in a pepsi bottle, falls over. What to do? Grab it and risk getting your digits blown off? Leave it?...Leave it! The rocket goes off and skims the ground about four inches high and two hundred miles per hour, across the four lane highway through the legs of a fat Bubba and directly through the front door of another truckstop maybe three hundred yards away. The door closes and we hear a muffled "Moob!" from the bowels of Enid's Diner. I've never seen 12 people get on a bus that fast. For two days we kept expecting to get pulled over by the cops and get thrown in the slammer. We played that masterpiece of cinematography at least a hundred times on the bus and each time laughed ourselves sick. -- Dr. Bruce Murphy Ottawa, Canada Dictator for Life; Underground Miata Network http://www.ottawa.net/~tanner/umn # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info hats" in the message. # Postings must go to hats@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: kellye Subject: Re: (hats) Greatest Hats Date: 17 Oct 1996 19:12:43 -0500 (EST) I am in desperate need of someones help. Nice stationery, he made his own MWH logo. Except the symbol of the man, he put "copy". I don't know what that means. As we know, Mike lost his job and also his e-mail so he hasn't been on this mailing list. When Dr. Bruce Murphy joined, and posted all those wonderful stories, I thought I'd save them, put them on a diskette and mail it to Mike. Hope that is ok! :) I told Mike about the 2-for1 CD being available except North America and he said he could buy them bulk from the local store and forward them to anyone on this list who wants one. Mike found another job which makes him work 17/18 hour DAYS. Ouch. So he really has a hard time finding time for the bootleg. As for the bootleg Cds, he writes: "I'll concentrate my efforts to trying to get the live and rare stuff out for Christmas, with the "Antarctica" track left off the Oglio compliation included. Guess what's playing right now? Track 3 of "Collection--spooky! Please give my apologies to everyone 'bout the delay but as you can appreciate the first few months of a new company are hectic (understatement) but I am now in th eprocess of upgrading my home studio so that I can complete the whole mastering process myself-- direct from everyone's tapes/cds to my mac digitally and then remixed etc straight to recordable cd. Should be fun, but as I've said, it takes time-- which is a very scarce commodity for me at the minute. Maybe I should have a holidat in my studio and do nothing but MWH stuff! Sounds tempting but I can't turn down work--understand my situation???" I also told him about the video bootleg.... "The video--sounds as though it could be brilliant. Where do I order my UK version from?" He also added a few things he wanted me to pass on to a few mailing list members: "Tell Laura that a surprise uk video is in the post featuring a certain 'doctor who offspring type person'. She'll understand! sorry to be asking you to do all these things, but it'll only take one e-mail....I feel though I'm almost part of the list again! Oh yeah, mention a 'hello' to Lars in Norway, and I hope his new job is going well :-)) Anyway, gotta go and do some work :-( but as the miami dolphins aren't, that shouldn't stop me. I thought someone else did for the "Collection" > Cd. I'd love to know how remastering is done. Could you enlighten me? :) > There is a big difference between "mastering" and "REmastering." We only master for our compilations. Remastering implies that you go back to the original multitrack masters and mix a new two track master for each song. This is typically done by the band or by producers, etc as it involved many creative decisions. After remastering is done then the process of mastering begins. Mastering is the process of collecting the best available two track mixed song masters, eq-ing and sequencing them for use in manufacturing. Hope this helps! Or angry. Anyway, it's still a nice picture. One of the few of the group I have. I also saw the videos for the first time (sans SD and WDTBG)!!!! Very original and they hold up even by today's standards. Lenny Pinkus and I shared keyboard duties for the 1988 tour. Marika Tjelius played keyboard bass, and Heidi Garcia played some string pads in some songs. Ivan played a bit of piano on parts of th tour as well. Ivan took quite a while to do PGTW, but this was before my time. I was under the impression that the the delay was due to losing their deal at Polygram, but hey, who knows. I met Ivan's ex-wife once while I was living over at Stef's place. She was very nice and Ivan and her seemed to get along fabulously. I forget what she did for a living, but I seem to recall it was something interesting? I don't remember meeting you in Montreal, but hell, I can't remember half the tour! :-) I'll be talking to Ivan this weekend, I'll tell him you said Hi. Apparantly he's working in a studio in Montreal. He left a message on my voicemail last week but didn't elaborate. I'll be putting on a preview of the video at a club in Osaka this weekend if anyone will be in the neighborhood (Copyrights don't mean too much in Asia.) Tom, I must raise a hunk of cold fish and warm cup of rice wine to your efforts! The videos themselves came out much better than I expected and the concert is a MUST for any MWH fan. (There are a few sound problems in the concert section with level dropouts) Maybe I'm just stating the obvious, but I think that we all owe Mr. Norman a debt of gratitude for adding to the incredibly scarce supply of MWH material available. Out of all the people talking about making a bootleg CD, video, T-shirt, etc., Tom is the only person who actually DID anything about it. I ordered one from him and got it a few days ago. I watched it once and decided it's not something I'm likely to watch again so thought I'd offer it to someone else. There's nothing wrong with the tape and it's on a nice Maxell HGX-Gold tape. I just don't expect I'll watch it again so I figured I'd see if anyone else is far down on the wait list and wants to just buy this one instead of waiting for one of those. If you, just drop me a note about it. (don't reply to the list.) Send to me at heidi@world.std.com since I read that account more often then this one.
