Analog phone lines were never really meant to handle modem data communcations at speeds over 2400 baud. It was like a miracle when someone figured out how to do 14,400 bits per second. But it appears that the physical limitations of analog phone lines is around 35,000 bits per second. And, bear in mind, that is ONLY under IDEAL conditions (which never happen, by the way). When you approach that rate (i.e. 33.6 modems) your actual throughput becomes highly dependant on the quality of your connection and things like the phase of the moon and the mood of the gods. A friend of mine just got a 33.6 modem and has seen TWO 33.6 connections to XMission since then. Most of the time, he sees 31.2, 28.8, or 26.4. Another friend who bougth the same kind of modem NEVER sees anything above a 28.8. It has a lot to do with the phone lines. > > >

I see you're using Netscape Communicator. May I suggest you turn off the HTML Mail Composition feature. You can do this at View->Preferences-> Mail and News->Use HTML Composition Window. -Fozz ============================================================================= Doran L. I would assume from those figures and the fact that in sugarhouse I could not get my 33.6 modem to connect much better than 28.8 period, the phone company (who of course want's more money to provide this poor service) would be the cuplrit. my business partner has ridden the phone company for almost 2 months after moving into a new house, lo he finally has several 33.6 connections though is average is still lower. perhaps that is all that is needed? Check your network >configuration in the Control Panel then try connection again. This is a problem we've had for a while in Logan. I believe it is the fault of a flakey modem. This may be the case. XMission has also stated that the Xylogics Annex equipment (that you dial into) has some significant problems working with Win95 clients. The solution for now is to disconnect and try to connect again until it works. The good news is that the USR Total Controls are on the way and promise to solve all such problems. -Fozz ============================================================================= Doran L.
