Williams" Subject: Constant retraining with Couriers? Date: 10 May 1997 09:51:34 -0600 Hello, Anyone know of some way around this problem? I've just bought a bunch of Courier modems (X2) for our office and it doesn't matter which one I use or if I use them from the office (Midvale's Union Park Ctr.) or at home (West Jordan), some connections are great, though most result in almost CONSTANT retraining! I'll get a short burst of data followed by a 15-30 second wait while the modem retrains! (The MR light goes out and no data flows.) It doesn't matter what modem software or operating system I use. It doesn't seem to happen if I disable X2. Any ideas are very welcome, even if there are some settings for the modem that sacrifice some throughput. It's pretty frustrating when you can get more work done on an old 14.4 than on the best X2 modem you can buy! Thanks in advance for your wisdom! -Bruce --- Bruce Williams, (brucew@xmission.com) Software Engineer/Project Manager for ROI Systems, Inc. Unfortunately, the problem is getting worse. Last night I had to give up after an hour of constant tries. The modem just whales high pitched sounds, not making a good handshake, and then gives me an error message. My phone number is 562-1632 if that helps. If you could, please let me know what I can do. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "John D. I sent the newconfig command through and got back an e-mail saying it was accepted but the changes are not showing and if I request the config file again, the changes I made are gone. Any suggestions? I can't directly edit the files either by telnet, it says permission denied when I try to edit the config file directly. First of all, I use US Robotics 56k for Mac. It was connecting decently, @46666, first couple of weeks. However, since a couple of weeks ago, my modem does not work correctly. This was the time when the Xmission had a major damage due to the US West line trouble. Now, its connection speed is only 19200. If you know how to replace it, please let me know. It seemed to work/not work intermittently yesterday (logged on okay but netscape did not recognize xmission.com). Went through set up procedures from your internet page today and now it seems to work all the time. Puzzling! 1) Get no answer about 20% of the time when calling 539-0900. Changed to 990-0900 and either get an answer or a busy signal. What should we expect? 2) Did I read correctly somewhere that we will be disconnected aftet 10 minutes of idle time? Seems short. 3) Tried to set up PAP and found that I do not have scripting tool in my accessories. Where do i get it? 4) Used to connect at about 38000 with AOL. Now connecting at 24000. Any idea of why? Using a 28.8 modem. So after I got the dialup networking to connect to xmission (thanks to the printed instruction pages.) we tried to install the disks. It finished the 1st 2 asks for disk 3 but when it is inserted the requester goes away for about a second, then comes and asks for disk 3 again. So I looked at the disks, and found that for some reason my disk labeled as 3 has the exact same file name as disk 2. I am suspecting this is the problem. Since we live in Ogden and do not really want to drive to SLC again for 1 disk, I was wondering if there was someway to possibly download the file I need for disk 3. If so where do I find it. Also just as a side note does anyone have any ideas if there is a program to allow me to spell-check my E-mail? I am using Win95 and Netscape 3.0. I half the time telnet to Xmission and still use pine for this, but it is becoming a chore. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bruce Williams Subject: Re: setup disks Date: 29 May 1997 09:38:42 -0600 At 01:29 AM 5/29/97 -0600, Rick Kelley wrote: >Since we live in Ogden and do not really >want to drive to SLC again for 1 disk, I was wondering if there was >someway to possibly download the file I need for disk 3. See http://www.qualcomm.com/ They also have a downloadable version (Eudora Light) that is very good as well but does not include the spell checker. Good luck! -Bruce
