I'm a Scoutmaster for a Boy Scout Troop and helping to run a mountain man theme for a summer camp in the North Cascades of Washington State. I am not new to mountain man stuff, but I am also fairly inexperienced. (so I guess I'm in between, go figure.) I have a gun, 45 caliber muzzleloader (4.5 feet long) named Mariah. I could use some assistance in planning a program for teenagers including forging, shooting, knife and hawk throwing, yarns/tall-tales, leatherwork, tracking, games, and mule/horse packing (and other elements, too many to list). Are there any good web links out there? I'd be happy to provide more information. Howdy Bearstrider, and welcome to the fire!

In addition to some of the things you already mentioned, I have and will, when appropriate, use the following for a YMCA summer camp. This particular camp is 8-11 year olds, but these would be suitable for teens as well....

A class on edible plants that are native to the area.

How to field dress an animal. (Check with the Directors on this one ;). )

Making and using snares.

Making bread by mixing dough "in the sack", twisting it over the end of a small limb and baking it over the coals.

Passing around furs, trade beads and period accoutrements.

Demonstrating of fire starting (flint & steel and bow-drill).

Making cordage and knots using a Lucet made from a twig.

Making medicine wheels or bags.

Baking in a Dutch oven (which I personally hate to include for PC reasons, but is always requested by the camp Director. Fortunately, I am not period restricted in this particular setting.)

This is really a pretty good deal, you hear guys talk about cheap animals, well let me tell there's no freebies. Have a guy at State College buy a young bull at a local auction, couldn't shoot it there, so he borrows a stock trailer to haul the animal to a place where the tree huggers won't see or know about it. Sounds like a fair idea. The stockyard guys load the buffalo and off Cliff goes with his cheap bull, on the way coming off Jack's Mounatin the bull starts raising hell in the trailer. Cliff slows down and everything is OK, then for some unknown reason the bull jumped or something and Cliff hits a parked vehicle along side the road. That cheap bull that he was bragging about cost him damages on the vehicle, plus on the trailer, he wouldn't tell us how much because his wife was listening, so much for cheap animals. I'll buy a couple of $10 tickets and not worry about trying to haul a live animal, plus they help you with the care of the animal after it's down, that's a lot in itself folks. Must not let any fare reach your fork unless it meets my high standards. Remember, starvation is a good thing, when your cook is watching out for your best interests. In truth, I want to know where all the members of this and certain other lists disappeared to when they finally got their way about reducing the cost of the tickets on this raffle. It seems passingly strange, at least to several of us who are neck deep in this project, that these fellows yelled long and hard, got their way, and now most of them have not bought one lousy ticket. I guess honor is not a term that translates well, or if they had good intentions and simply fell on hard times, they should have let those of us who care about them, step up and donate a ticket in their name. Doing right to those of us who are in need can be kept very private, and is the correct thing for us to do. As for those who do not have a financial excuse, a pox on them and theirs. If their word means nothing when they debate and get us to change the rules of the raffle, then they do not deserve to be on this or any other list of similar persuation. And the way, Concho, just talked to Buck, and he says you are a bloodly asshole for thinking that I would cook for the likes of you or Dennis. One thing which has worked well is a multiple team relay, timed, with multiple stations of skill tests, perhaps combined with a storyline, culminatnig in a team challenge to gather the materials necessary and then build a fire, cook something, eat it, and whistle a tune. This can take a number of leaders to accomplish if elaborate but lot's of fun as well as a chance to practice the skills which have been taught. The knives and hawks, etc. should be at the stations ready for use rather than carried. I'm sure you're familiar with the Guide to Safe Scouting, which unfortunately allows the use of caplock muzzleloaders only. Period appropriate awards would be great! Best of luck with your event!!
