Hood's day by dairy make good reading. Pay close attention to a statement near the end of the piece where he estimates that about 100 miles of the 232 mile trip were spent walking, not paddling. West Texas is famous for stretches of river that are less wet than they are merely damp. These boys used GPS locators and probably all the nylon & plastic that they could find, but they did a fine trip anyhow. In case you are concerned about Hood's mention of shooting squirrels in May, be aware that much of Texas has no closed season on squirrels, and most of those that do have spring seasons as well as fall seasons. I have mentioned this river before and think it has one of the most melodious names found on any map.... El Rio de Los Brazos de Dios (The River of the Arms of God)......but pronounced by almost every non-Hispanic Texan as "Bry-zis". The Brazos passes with 15 miles of my house, but I am many miles south of Possum Kingdom Lake where Hood ended his trip. A slow rain has been falling here since about 3:00am. I wish you boys out west could get some of it. YMOH Lanney Ratcliff ps: Possum Kingdom Lake is impounded in canyon country and is deep and clear, making it a mecca for scuba divers (you know "Some Come Up Barely Alive"). For reasons nobody has every satisfactorily explained to me, one of the best know underwater landmarks in the lake is the rusting hulk of a '55 Chevrolet. Since the lake was impounded in the '40's somebody had to PUT the car in the lake. Makes you wonder. - ---------------------- hist_text list info: http://www.xmission.com/~drudy/mtman/maillist.html ------------------------------ End of hist_text-digest V1 #1051 ******************************** - To unsubscribe to hist_text-digest, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe hist_text-digest" in the body of the message.
