Some ravings about how good it is, but no in-depth material. So it seems I'm once again (one of) the first to make this review. :) (Many, if not most, of the opinions below come from John van Houtert, with whom I've been mailing today. He showed me things I'd not yet discovered.) Oxygene 7 part 1 (4'19) This track starts with four solitary notes, which sound suspiciously like the notes in the End Titles of Blade Runner, which are repeated once, and then "whoosh!" the track starts. No slow start like in all of his albums, safe for Magnetic Fields and Revolutions. The bass line is almost exactly that of Oxygene 4. The track sounds a bit minimal, no multi-layer sounds here. part 2 (3'46) The second part sounds *very* much like Oxygene, with similar sounds. The rythm part stays, but the melody sounds like either Oxygene 3 or 6 (I can never tell which is which). I guess it's 3. part 3 (3'36) The third part starts with rain sounds. Again those Oxygene sounds, but also some that could have come from Magnetic Fields. Not a real melody, merely string-sounds. Overall, a nice piece. Hard to describe and hard to remember (and it's the sixth time today I heard it), therefore no real comment. Oxygene 8 (3'54) The single release, and part of it can be heard on the net. Though the melody isn't earth-shattering (actually, a bit repetitive), the sound is absolutely beautiful. Very analogue. Oxygene 9 part 1 (1'54) It starts with some sounds I can't really describe, and those that Oxygene 1 starts with. This is an introduction, a transient piece. part 2 (1'55) Again sounds that come from Oxygene, be it in a modified form. Then, a sound that seems to come directly from Eddie Jobson's "Theme of Secrets". Or was that Oxygene 1? part 3 (2'24) This is the Theremin part everybody's raving about. As a matter of fact, this sounds almost exactly like a part from Oxygene (but I keep forgetting which one). The sounds are somewhat different, and some sounds of Equinoxe 2 are also there. Oxygene 10 (4'16) I've been told that this track's melody is played on the Nordlead VAS (Virtual Analogue Synthesizer, an 'analogue' synthesizer based on digital signal processors). A bit hard to grab, this track. The bass line is *very* simple, like the one in Rendez-vous 4. The melody is nice, but a bit feeble. The transition is a bit like the breathing in Rendez-vous 5. I believe that this track had drums that sound lke those used in Vangelis' 'Dial Out'. This is a possible single release. Oxygene 11 (4'56) In this track, the Digisequencer is used. A repeating short loop and the analogue synthesizer sound that keeps changing. No real melody here, it's mere improvisation. I doubt whether there's a clear transcription of this track. This track is not my favorite, I guess. Oxygene 12 (5'36) This is a rework of Oxygene 7, but if someone had said: 'a rework of the End Titles of Blade Runner', I've would have believed it also. Even more than in the first track, it sounds like Vangelis' work. After a while, it changes in an uptemo track with again those Eddie Jobson-like sounds from Oxygene 9, part 2. Oxygene 13 (4'23) This is simply a very beautiful track. On a concert, people would take out their lighters and wave them. It sounds haungtingly familiar, perhaps a bit like Francis Lai ('Bilitis'). Musically, it's not a milestone, bit still very beautiful. Something like (the sound of) the melody of 'Souvenir of China' and the rythm of Oxygene 6. A very good example of the beautiful sounds a synthesizer can produce. In most tracks, I've said "it sounds like" or "the melody is like". This doesn't mean that it's an unoriginal album, au contraire. It's not really surprising that a lot of Oxygene can be heard throughout the album. There are some hints of other artists as well; people have heard things from Tangeringe Dream (but I don't know TD myself). If you look at the album alone, and forget that there are eight studio albums and twenty years that have preceded it, it's not an album of this time. No vocals. No guitars. No house/dance rythms. Hardly any digital synths, apart from the K2000, the DJ70, the JV90 and the Prophecy. The latter is the most recent synth he uses, the rest is at least four years old, but more probably 20 years. And it doesn't sound so produced as Chronologie does. It's a bit more improvised, sometimes even experimental. And when you listen to the whole sound of the album, you wonder what's ever going to come from digital synthesizers. They're getting better and better at emulating accoustic instruments, while I (and Jarrre :) ) think that's not what you should use it for. You wonder if the sounds of those analogue synthesizers will ever come back. It should be possible, with physical modelling. To a certain degree. After the sixth time, I still find it hard to remember what every track sounds like. I will have to listen even more. So therefore, no comment, other than "it's good". Why the heck did I write this review then? :) - - Peter - -- Peter Korsten | peter@grendel.IAEhv.nl (UUCP) | peterk@IAEhv.nl C/C++/Perl/Java hacker # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info jarre" in the message. # Postings must go to jarre@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ From: "Thomas 'Falken' Chiverton" Date: Tue, 18 Feb 1997 09:53:20 +0000 (GMT) Subject: Re: (jarre) Oxygene 7-13 is here ! There seems to be a lot of promotion around this album than any of his others. Actually I heard a radio ad last night which refered to the album as Oxygene part 2, which I thought was rather strange. I heard it mentioned a lot by DJ on the radio over the last few weeks. This type of promotion is quite unique I think for JMJ. BTW, what are people's favourite JMJ tracks? It was invented in the late 1800`s It's analog, and works on radio interference (I think). There are many web sites, type 'theremin' into altavista and you are off ! My name is Michael Kollros, am 26 years old, working in the medical and pedagogic section and live in Munich, which is in the south of Germany and very well known for the "Oktoberfest". My hobbies are besides of Jean Michel Jarre, electronic music (I just bought an Roland JP-8000 virtual analog synthesizer, and this piece is sooo good, that I spend more time at the moment doing my own analog music than listening to Oxygene 7-13, what s shame). I also like traveling around the world and are interested in foreign cultures. Actually I am interested in so many things, including computer and internet, that I unfortunately have to less time for all my hobbies! But I found time to do, what I ever wanted, since I was a child and big fan of Jean Michel Jarre, creating a JMJ Fanclub. Together with a girlfriend of mine named BERNADETTE GLOSEMAYER from Wiesbaden, I had the idea of the new German Fanclub OXYGENERATION. The main reason, why we do that, is to inform people from Germany and all over the world about concerts, music and other activities of Jean Michel Jarre. The past 10 years I always had to complain that there is, especially in Germany, no way to get infos etc. The Germans were never informed about concerts like Houston, Lyon, Paris... Even the media doesn`t bring many music, videos or infos of this genius man. So I found out, after asking 100 people in downtown munich last year, that most of the people know the music of Jean Michel Jarre, especially Oxygene from 1976, but almost nobody did know, that Jean Michel is doing the biggest events all over the world. Enough reason to change that... So now there is born OXYGENERATION. At the moment we want to inform people with the webside, which will be online still this month, with E-mail and for those, who don`t have those new media, we also will bring out a bulletin service. Later in the year, we have plans, to create a kind of magazine in German. There are also plans of fan meetings, organized tours and more in the near future. But at the moment, enjoy the new webside, which will be only in German at the moment, except of the NEWS SECTION, which will be available in German as well as in English. Everybody, who is interested in getting member of the fanclub, please order infos by E-mail (free) or by post(sending an addressed and stamped (1,-DM or IRC) envelope to the adress at the top). At the moment there is all under construction, so please allow little time for the answer. Also the webside is under construction, so it will need some time, to improve it. We are very pleased to get help from fans all over the world by sending infos, hints for the web side(f.i. how to set a counter) and more. So get in touch with us and I am sure, we will create a very good forum for all (German) fans of JEAN MICHEL JARRE. See you soon, yours sincerely Michael Kollros as well as Bernadette Glosemayer FIRST OXYGENERATION INFO (E): ----------------------------- OXYGENE TOUR: Additional to the concerts in Frankfurt, Hamburg, München, Berlin, Stuttgart and Oberhausen, there now is a concert confirmed in Leipzig at 13.5.1997. The rarities album contains basicly the two albums he released before Oygene being "Deserted Palace" and "Les Granges Brulees". The last is the score for a French movie with Alain Delon and Simone Signoret. Furthermore it contains 4 pre-Oxygene singles. In total it contains 35 songs. Altough the CD tells me that it is made in Europe, I thought it was a German bootleg CD. It was released in 1994. Because I live in Holland I can't tell you where you can get a copy in the UK. Maybe Dave Freeman of the UK Revolutions fanclub can tell you more about that. > I am also not familiar with "Digisequencer" that > I have read so many references to since joining the mailing list a week > ago. Could someone also lead me in the right direction for this, please? I've read somewehere that it is a homemade electronic device by Michel Geiss. If take a look at the Equinoxe booklet, you will see a reference to this: "Special thanks to Michel Geiss for his help and development of new instruments" If you have the Honk-Kong CD you can listen to what it does on CD2 track5 - Digisequencer, but I guess that you know that :-) Maybe someone else can give you more details about this "instrument".
