Here are my impresions, comments at end. It is prehaps best to point out that most of this was written lying on my bed, eyes shut, with headphones on. 1) Tzolkin Oscilating 'beat' with twinkerling, start-of-x-files like tune. A wonderfully weird piece, even now at 1030 in the morning, about 2 minutes after I got back from the post box ! 2) Lux Aeternae Very much like part of the 'Elemental' tape I got a while back from Rev (did anyone else get one... ?). A gentle oscilating tune, played on something like a harp. I can see myself being lulled to sleep by this (not good, I must be in Uni in 2 hours :-/ ). Very calm and peaceful. In the background (distance... ?) little stars twinkle and shine with spot effects... The harp slowly changes in to something a lot more synthy sounding as the track progresses- cool ! Loverly phased effects towards the end, sweeping, undulating, a stream, a river... makes me think of looking around something strange and powerful... By the end I'm smiling and feeling very happy ! (During track 5- it's a forest !) 3) Rexa-Caculha I remember this from the tape too, but as with track 2, it's cleaner and clearer, as well as having been changed quite a bit in terms of the EQ of the layers, their start/stop positions and the like. A chorous of hand bells plays the tune, with bigger (almost church like) ones filling in the background with deeper notes. A *very* low pitch rumble apears now and again. This tune is gonna stick with me all day (unless the rest of the album does... this is my first run-through !). At the half way point all that fades down, and a *loverly* synth bass line comes in, just one instrument, a gentle pulse with spot effects. This is then overlayed with another instrument on a repeating loop. And another. And another. And so on. A brillent bit of multi-layering. At one point a plane or something flys by, seen through the trees of a forest, or the pylons of a powerline. Other spot effects like that puncture the loops every so often. The bass rises to the front for the end of the tune. (During track 5- an entrance way, a gate or something... maybe an archway, old, stone covered in moss ?) 4) Por Argento Organic whooshings start the track, bubbels too. Water drips. Under ground, a sewer or pipe. Metalic squeaks as a robot flys past. Animals hoot in the distantance. Wind whistles down theipe, a forlorn sound. All these combine to form a sort of tune... it just *has* to be heard to understand. Something darts across the field of vision- this is *cool* ! Groanings up ahead... water sloshes. Something deep-bass sounding at the end- a power plant or something. A hovering platform noise... acelorating away ! Now that all fades, a babies night light like tune on a baby's night-light instrument ! I'm looking out the end of the pipe, over something strange, and myssterous, huge, dotted with mnay lights. This track just *conjures* up images as it goes. What ever it is, it isn't frighening, I feel that it wants me to see it... experience it... Accelorating away noise ends the track. Best track so far. 5) Le Charme Simple tune overlayed with spot effects, sparkels and longer effects, even as it evolves into something. Maybe I'm seeing the inside of the city ? Taking a walk down a coridor, looking down branches, seeing flashing lights and other things- none of which I can understand, yet I *know* they are... fun, or safe, something like that. A chorous of humen-like voices, now I see the... beings that live here, bright colours that glow, halos, instead of talking, they project images at each other... this is *amasing* ! 6) Lapis Philosophorum A familer oscilating twinkle underlies a sweeping, whooshing main instrument, spirling up above the people, a high domed roof. Lights play on it, images fliter by. All very calm. Peaceful. Birds skwak- I'm in a garden, a geodesic dome overhead, night time, stars. Helicopter floats by. A small stream runs into a pond, fish swim by my feet. I'm seeing more and more, floating higher and higher above the garden... tall trees that brush the dome with outstretched branches. I can't see outside the dome, no light but the stars. At the end we are left with just an instrument or two... or I thought it was the end anyway... but it builds and relayers again... sunrise... bright sun rising, making the garden's trees cast long shadows. The garden, lit from somewhere else before, now is lit by the sun. A native American instrment sounds to great the dawn, contrasted *briliently* by the synth lines. Birds sing too. Wind whistles past gently as the instruments fade. 7) The Samovar Song Xmas sounding synths and bells. Deep bass throb. Through the dome, across the land- a bigger garden, no dome ! A chorous of voices ! I'm grining ! This is *loverly* ! Makes me think of snow shakers. Thats it ! It's snowing outside the dome, I'm being shown that... gentle flakes drift down, run across the dome. Already the ground is covered in a thick fluffy layer of snow. Wow ! Ranks with Por Agento for best track ! 8) Sacred Site Erk ! Faster synth sequence ! Going up... out of atmosphere- *space* ! Stars multiply now there is no atmosphere- nebula, galexies (Jarre ;-) ). Chorous again- something ahead... more layers greet it... a *ship* ! Graceful curving lines... bulbours and sleak at once... shinign mirror metal reflects space. We're far from any planets- I've come a long way. Singing along with the chorous ! Sweeping along the side of the ship, seeing things in flashes of images, sound and light... flashing past windows... too rapid to type... feeling of wonder ! Past end of ship, still going away, twist to see rear of ship. gentle low from engines... were moving away- want it to stay, but it contiinues its course. Water sounds... I'm being taken back... gentle put back in the forest. And thats it ! Wow ! Dunno weather I've just had a very personaly experience, or if anyone else shares these impressions, I maybe the only one who sees it as a journey from forest to pipe, city, garden and then space before returning home. Go and buy it ! This is *very* *very* good. Synthetic soundscapes don't do it justice... its an emotional trip too. I feel *so* happy... freeier now. Oh wow ! Go buy it. It was also Jarre's first performance ever in Denmark. He is coming back on June 12th, and I think I am going again! Let's face it, it is not "China II", but it was an absolutely fine concert. It was a bit short, only about 95 minutes, but he promised more in June. The "puppets" that I heard should be there were not present, only 5 human size "stiffs" hanging from the ceiling with a gas mask during Ox4. What was in it: From memory (please correct me, if I am mistaken, and I am NOT sure about the order) (Waiting for Cousteau) Oxygene 7 Chronologie 6 Equinoxe 7 (he goofed the melody line once here) Oxygene 6 Magnetic Fields 1 Oxygene 10 Oxygene 4 Oxygene 11 Oxygene 8 Magnetic Fields 2 Oxygene 5 Souvenir of China Revolutions ?? (Oxygene 12) Equinoxe 5 Oxygene 13 (Waiting for Cousteau) So, a lot of Oxygene! -but also some very pleasant surprises: Souvenir of China, Eq7, MF2, Eq5,.. The Cousteau pieces vere simply playing (album version) while people were getting in and out, and Oxygene 12 were playing (album) while he was having a little break, and a video was running on the curtain in front of the stage. The ?? I have written, I simply could not hear what was, perhaps Revolutions clinging out, no melody. Jarre also had the "Feremin" (sp) thing on stage, looking like a 17th century radio, that he was improvising on (can't do much else!) while playing one of the Oxygene tracks (Ox10 I think it was). The devise was described in detail a while back on this list I think, please see that mail, I don't know more about it. The sound was OK, but very loud, I have not yet spoken with anybody sitting way back. I was 10m from the speakers, so the sound was a bit distorted unless you put your fingers in your ears(!), but then you actually got a near perfect sound, so I guess I was just too close. I will get a seat further back next time. The performance as such was quite good, there were not much "new" material in the form of improvisations or new inventions, and IMO he didn't do Ox5 very well (and he forgot to stop one of the machines, so we got an extra few seconds from Ox6 afterwards!) So, I guess I got all the negatives out, hopefully also most of the positives, because my conclusion is that it was well worth the money! Finally, I wish there were some tour books/booklets (so I wouldn't have had to type the tracklist from memory!). Perhaps next time. Look forward to it! Hejsa! (I think I've said this before, but maybe in too vague a way.) I was at the Danish concert, Valbyhallen, this Wednesday. We were told to sit down and be quiet, for our own sake, because this concert would be broadcast live on French radio, and Jarre wouldn't care whether people were standing up or sitting down, come 20.00, he'd be playing. So my question is: did anybody hear this broadcast? Does anybody know anything about it? (If you answer this in more than a couple of days, please answer to me privately as well.) I think I'll never forget the first 5 minutes of this concert. Before 20.00 a white piece of cloth in front of the stage, and images/lights on it. At 20.00 sharp, a white circle of light (a spot), and a silhouette, the shadow of the Man. Wild applause! Then the cloth fell, and the light swirled, as if something had shattered. And then the light harp. Don't care whether it works or not, it looked great! I have been viewing this list for a while, but this is my first posting so i take the oportunity to introduce myself. I am 22 years old and have been a Jarre fan scinse 1991 when I heard Oxygene for the first time. I have worked as a sound engineer, but am currently unemployed. I am blind and use braille display to my computer, therefore I preffer Dos and Unix to graphical operating systems. Now to my reason for this posting. Most of the critics Jarre has got in the Swedish media, for both the new album and the recent conserts, is quite negative. It seems that the rewievers don't like syntheziser music at all, they call it "easy listening" and so on. Is this trend sometning typically swedish or is it common in other countries as well? I have two tickets I'm desperate to get rid off for the Nynex concert on the 7th of June. If anybody out there is interested, I need to get rid of these tickets ASAP because I'm going out of the country very soon. The tickets are for Block 106 Row T, if this means anything and I'm quite prepared to make a loss on them, and offers though obviously time is of the essence ie I can be haggled down from #20 but haggling tends to take time.
