I was just >wondering if you were disappointed by Jarre cancelling his Melbourne concert >for the casino opening night. Do you know if he is going to come to >Melbourne (or Aussieland in general) some day? Back in 1995/96 he was meant to be here in Alice Springs for the Tolerance Concerts of which were again mainly held in Europe. These concerts organised and sponsored by UNESCO where meant to bring JMJ here and perform an open air concert in the heart of OZ. Alas it never happened. JMJ was also meant to appear at the opening of the Casino, but was cancelled I think mainly because frankly not many people know who he is. Crown (or some body in Crown) knows of him (or has heard of him) and JMJ's potential with outdoor concerts like the ones he did in China, Houston and London. I guess they thought JMJ would do just as good here in Melbourne, especially with the backdrops of the Yarra River and the general cosmopolitan architecture around the place. Yes, if JMJ did perform here it would have been very good, but then again who would know who he was and what he was playing, doing, etc? In fact I am of the strong opinion that people would see his show, stare at amazement, feel a bit excited and then go home asking themselves, '....that was nice....did you see the fireworks how well they blended in with the music.........what music was that?.........it sounded like star music or space music or......'. Do you know what I mean? JMJ is just not a name known here, which is a shame because the music here is heavily dominated, imported and controlled by US influences and British ones too. Crown I think wanted an opening everyone would talk about for years and if JMJ was performing many people would still be asking who the hell was he and what was that music. HA! Imagine me amongst the audience if JMJ did come to Melbourne AND hearing people speak like that!!! I would go mental!! I would be yelling to people that it was this French composer called JMJ and that he's world famous, but people would just look at me with dumb struck looks and wonder what the hell I was injecting into my system......Frankly many Australians are very narrow minded people who's knowledge of the world only comes in from TV, Papers, and gossip........ Sorry about the long post, but it really angered me that JMJ's concert here was cancelled. And to sum it all up I blame it on the publics general lack of knowledge and musical appreciation in this country - especially amongst the younger generation. I saw a program in 'A Current Affair' last night condemning the really pathetic and alarming levels of illiteracy in this country - especially amongst young students and the lack of proper teaching methods to combat this........see what I mean??? He would have been unknown to most people, but the same could be said about him when he played Houston. I think it was simply a matter of timing, because the delayed casino opening cut into his tour schedule. After all, if they paid a million each to Elton John and Billy Joel, it wasn't a question of money. In his recent Melbourne Herald-Sun interview, JMJ said he wanted to tour here. We should lobby Crown to get him out, maybe next year for their first anniversary... I'm imagining the huge firestacks outside Crown billowing in time to Magnetic Fields... Confirmed meeting with higher intelligence ! There I was, calmly lounging around my flat, wondering if I'd be able to summon enough energy to reach over and put some music on, or find a book, when one of my flat mates starts banging his handbag on the door. He's shouting 'phone call for you', so I throw on a (black fluffy) dressing gown and stumble out to the phone. "Hello ?" I croak in my best '1130 is too early in the morning' voice. "Hi Thomas !" Echoes a voice from the other end, "its Mirai here, I'm going to be at the train station in Manchester in a couple of hours, wanna meet me ?" By this time I am awake and mumble a description of myself and receive a time. I potter around the flat for an hour and a half, before donning my []/\() t-shirt and 'I didn't do it, no-body saw me do it and you can't prove anything' hat, and leaping onto a passing bus. 10 minutes later I'm at the station. Its cooler in side than the 24-odd outside, and I'm out of the wind too. I walk through the lobby, around by the platforms ('Return to Innocence' is playing out of one of the shops). I don't see anyone looking around at me, so take up a prominent position leaning against the ticket machines (which didn't talk to me :-) ). I'm looking around when I notice a small red dot. Looking up there's some guy standing in front of me dressed in black shirt and trousers, a black ribbed leather waist coat, and small shades on a shaved head. "Hi," he says, "you must be Thomas." "And you must be Mirai." I say, grinning at the laser pointer. So I took him off on a guided tour of Manchester as we get acquainted, discovering our birthdays are about one week apart and other meaningless coincidences. After showing Mirai where the bomb went off (we didn't manage to find a piece :-) ), we take a trip back to my stereo. On the way Mirai shows me the Intelligentsia folder he brought with him, with pics and stuff from various concerts and locations (nice costumes !), as well as stills from the video from the concert he did in Cyberia. We spent the next 2 and a bit hours listening to strange music (or should that be techno futuristic beats ?). Mirai had a copy of his Intelligentsia promo tape with him, as well as a promo of the soundtrack for the RPG game he did. I grin my way through these (they really are very good- get some !). We proceed via Rev's 'Elemental', which Mirai comments is about 10 times better than when he heard a tape of it 6 months ago. Pausing briefly on my almost (it'll be finsished one day !) done Revolutions remix (Mirai said it was good), and a couple of my stories (Mirai offers to put them on his web pages) we talk some more to the Technologist remix side of the tape. By this time we're both hungry, and Mirai has to be in some place called Pot Squiggly that evening, so we duck back to the city. We decided to see about train times for Mirai before we get food, so we walk to the train station, find it's the wrong one, and walk to the other one. As I'm recovering from Mirai explaining that he likes Japan despite the huge cock roaches and earthquakes, my hats gets blown off, and I have to run across the road after it. Mirai is heedless to my brush with death- he's laughing and wishing he'd videoed it :-) We take pizza (well, he took pizza, I had pizza and garlic bread as my only meal of the day !) in a wonderful little place by the station. With very little more hassle Mirai finds an appropriate train (not the most futuristic transport form, but hey, this is *only* England :-) ). It was really good to be able to put a face to some of the best (strangest ?) posts and IRC sessions, plus I got to meet a really cool guy and generally have fun for an afternoon. I have just joined the list and I thought I would quickly introduce myself as I make my first post. My name is Rich Maggio. I live in NJ in the US and am a software engineer by trade. I discovered electronic music about 3 years ago through listening to Tangerine Dream. This past fall, I discovered Jarre by purchasing Oxygene. An incredible CD! Since then, I have bought all of his studio albums except for Revolutions and Custeau. As soon as I find Revolutions in a store, I'm buying it. Some quick comments on the new release... I got Oxy 7-13 this past weekend and I just love it! I have had to stop listening to it so that I don't get sick of it and overdose! :-). My only complaint is that it could have been longer (as others have noted as well - I read through the archives from the past 4 months). I like Chronologie, but Oxy 7-13 is by far the best thing he has put out in many years IMHO. To me, this CD doesn't really extend Oxygene, as the title would imply, but complements it. I think Jarre did a fantastic job of capturing the feeling of the classic version without merely repeating it. At the same time, he gave the music a more "modern" sound while still keeping the feel of the original. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised by this CD. I did not expect to be as impressed with it as I was. Large amounts of pre-release hype always makes me skeptical. :-) Lastly, my question... Having said all of that, I have a question regarding the live CDs that JMJ has put out. Unlike Tangerine Dream, the material on Jarre's live CDs are from previous releases. Are the live Jarre CDs worth owning if you have all of the studio stuff? Does he improvise during his live performances? Since there are so many live Jarre CDs, could someone provide me with some direction as to which ones are great and which ones are just mediocre? As a point of reference, though I like most all of his stuff that he has put out, I am partial to the early stuff (Oxy, Equinox, Magnetic Fields). I thank you for your anticipated responses and I look forward to "conversing" will you all on this list.
