Sampling Metallica and Chuck D from opposite sides of the Napster debate, it rocks like a demon- as much of an attacking 'high' as "America: WTIL" except more blunt. Lovely. Go buy. Oh, by the way, it's been released as a 6-track single as a protest against the chart rules that've restricted the number of mixes they would've been able to put out otherwise. They will discuss Home's taste in malt whisky (biased towards the fiery and peaty, among his favourites are Talisker, Laphroaig and Springbank), read extracts from his avant-garde pornography and make bread dolls. The dolls are assembled from a large family loaf for the body, a smaller round loaf for the head, with French sticks used for the limbs. (peeled carrots are used as a phallus on male dolls because bread becomes soggy if sucked and isn't functional for penetrative purposes either). Bread dolls play a central role in the Home mythos as down market sex toys. They are certainly cheaper than blow up sex dolls (which start at around 40 and go up to 5000 in price). The more perverted among Home's devotees eat bread dolls after they have been used in sex play and liberally smeared with rancid soft cheese. Home acolytes are also much given to doing jigs in flaming bread hats. Large flat loaves are coated on top with glue which is set alight. The flaming bread hat is then placed on the devotees head - with the dough acting as insulation against the flames, so while this looks dangerous, it is relatively safe if done outdoors. If you want to get into the spirit of Home Night on 14 October (a bit like Burns Night but with bread dolls as well as whisky) - get in some booze, order some Stewart Home books (non-fiction titles include Confusion Incorporated and Mind Invaders, typical of his novels are Cunt and Blow Job) from Amazon or wherever - AND HEAD FOR A BAKER'S SHOP! Maybe because he isn`t subbed to the KLF list. >anyone heard anything abouthis new murder novel he is >supposedly writing?? Yeah! The Butler did it... But seriously, I understand that it`s been finished but there are problems with getting it published as the contents are too libellous and he`s been asked to submit the contents to the Government`s D Notice Committee so that the text can be vetted before possible publication. I spoke to Stewart on the phone the other day and he`s well pissed off with the delays as he intended this work to be released ASAP due to the contemporary controversial content (that reveals a sinister Government plot involving a mind control state asset called Kristian Gomeche and includes a lot of apparently classified information that has been mixed up with the fiction to produce a 'factional' novel). It seems that the closing scenes are set around Callanish where an organisation called K5 Plant Hire Ltd are to set about napalming and destroying the Scottish Stones. I've seen a few extracts knocking about and I think that if Stewpot can`t actually get it accepted for imminent release by a publisher then he`s probably going to distribute it via the internet as an electronic book or something. It also promises to be the biggest Home tome yet... Incidentely, I`ve just received his latest booklet 'Anamorphosis: Stewart Home, Searchlight and the plot to destroy civilisation' by "Larry O'Hara & Friends that has been published by Sabotage Editions, BM SENIOR, London WC1N 3XX in the snail mail today, and if anyone is planning on going along to the SHS event at the Anarchist Bookfair this Saturday there will be a limited amount of copies available (with a free glass of Isle of Jura malt). BTW the above booklet has notes from the lecture that SH did at the Fortean Times UnConvention this year (mentioned in this month`s issue of The Face) and if anyone would be kind enough to want to upload it into the K related archives you can contact the following notorious MP3 plagiarist to obtain a copy: Nigel Ayers writes >Stewart Home on Independent Mind Control MP3 News Flash > >The MP3 weighs in at 25.6 MB. > >My favourite bit is when someone shouts "Imposter! We went to check out this Apocalypse exhibition in London first thats going on at the mo, and I must just say go along, even if it's just to see the Chris Cunningham video installation(Cunningham did those amazing Aphx Twin vids,'Come to daddy' and 'Windowlicker'), and check out the lifesize model/waxwork of the pope laid on the floor after being hit by a meteorite! The meteorite on top of him, they even went as far as smashing a hole in the glass ceiling to show where the meteorite had come thru the gallery roof and a load of broken glass scattered around below on the floor, it was an hilarious scene, the figure was very lifelike. Guess its because I am a Roman Catholic(lapsed) that I found it so funny. Then we walked up thru Hyde Park to see Jimmy and got waylaid by anrcho-comic Tony Allen on a step ladder at Speaker's Corner having some fun with the crowds. We eventually got to the area we thought Jimmy ws(we had the pitch number, 445 or something) but it seems we missed him! FUCK! There was a big space where I think his paintings were b4!!! So we can't tell you what they were like, we were armed with camera and videocam too. Fuckit. The Chill Out mega mix is not the same as the Chill Out 2 that you are talking about. The mega mix is not like Chill Out at all. It has a continuous and unchanging drum beat throughout the entire track with some samples going on in the background. It's really rather boring in comparison to the Chill Out 2 mixes. Here is the info from the discography. The KLF/The Orb: Chill Out Mega mix [19??] bootleg remix 18:28 Chill Out Megamix [Alex Paterson > I downloaded a copy of the KLF Chill Out mega mix the other day and I love > it. The reason why it's rare is because it was produced in 1989, when CD singles were still very uncommon and The KLF weren't very famous - so not a lot were pressed. This copy is the only one I have ever seen for sale, and I grabbed it, even though it wasn't cheap... And now I'm in a quite desperate need for money, so I'm auctioning it: The KLF: Kylie Said to Jason (KLF 010 CD) (includes Kylie Said to Jason, Madrugada Eterna and Kylie Said Trance) Starting bid is $50. The auction ends on Sunday the 29th of October at 12:00 CET. Please mail me privately with bids. Cheers, Johan. _________________________________________________________________________ Johan J. Perhaps of more interest to the KLF list though is the fact that Bill Drummond has formed The Intercontinental Twinning Association (twinning five cities in five continents during the next five years) that has selected Hull to be twinned with "YOUR DARKEST THOUGHT" and anyone who has any ideas as to what this means or what it could lead to can contact ita@penkiln-burn.com (this was all mentioned on a limited edition framed PB poster on the wall of the cafe of the arts centre along with two upright signs on their sides that were to be erected beneath 'Welcome' signs seen entering the city where a selection of Penkiln Burn postcards and large banners/stickers were freely available. I managed to get hold of a load of the limited edition (of 500) pb postcard number 6 - ITA City No. 1 Belfast, October 2000: Welcome to Belfast - Twinned with your wildest dreams" that no-one at all seemed to be interested in at all, and presumably they will end up in the bin or ocean by the end of this week. If anyone wants one or more then I`d obviously be more than willing to swap them for something interesting and preferably K-related... BTW Does anyone have any old Press Releases from Mick Houghton as I`d like to obtain one or more to check something out for a little sideline project that I`m currently researching. A good scan or a snail mailed copy would suffice I guess just so that I can confirm a few things. I accidentely bumped into Bill not long ater I arrived when inadvertently slagging him off to a mate of mine (who is writing up the whole event and Jimmy`s 'On the Railings' exhibition for the next issue of Bizarre magazine and other outlets), when I started mouthing off that "Drummond`s probably not going to show anyhow, and it`s just another one big hoax of his, just like how he never ever turns up for his book talks at literary festivals, etc" and after being sharply nudged in my side, the sly bugger (wearing a workman`s donkey jacket with an orange stripe on the back) was actually sitting next to me... Oops! Just after I arrived for Stewart`s first lecture on Friday afternoon I asked him if he thought that a certain local conspiracy theorist who is friendly with his feuding enemy Larry O'Hara (Robin Ramsey of Lobster magazine) might turn up to heckle or intervene in his talks and Stewart said that he had already been up to his house to see him, and here follows a quick diary of the none too subtle (co)vert surveillance that was undertaken for a few days that eventually ended up driving him nuts: Day one: Stewart Home and Bill Drummond drive up in Bill`s landrover, and commenced videoing and painting a skip with graffiti thereby twinning it "with the next skip that you see next week" and proceed to avoid local police for carrying out art subsidised vandalism. They later carry on down the street looking for the notorious conspiracy researcher`s house until Bill suddenly slams on the brakes sharply as he has just spotted "the ultimate skip" and both get out to look for the house which is just a few yards away. Bill spots the house first and notifies Stewart to come and look at it, as the road-facing window in the bottom room (living room?) is totally blocked from the outside world due to rows of massive grey filing cabinets. A mark of paranoia or extreme anal-retention? Stewart anonymously drops his latest publication about Larry O'Hara through the letter box marked to 'Mr. Ramsey ' in a plain brown envelope (as he has been told never to send him anything via the mail ever again) for the occupier`s attention and both drive off. Day two: Stewart, Iain Aitch and myself walk up from Hull City Centre to photograph the skip and pay a pilgrimage to the house (as I had just wanted to see it out of curiousity as I was in the area anyway and Stewart now wanted me to see it, because of the ludicrous amount of grey filing cabinets blocking the windows, etc. We see the skip and take documentary photos and wander past where each of us had spent the previous night into a land of student bedsits, strange pubs, wooded avenues, roundabouts with massive sculptures and fountains and roadsigns warning of 'ducks crossing' the road. I comment on past comments made this particular conspiracy researcher regarding ducks and muse whether he has a fetish for ducks, as a fellow conspiracy nut friend of his allegedly has for making love to bread dolls. The 'ultimate skip' has disappeared and all that remains is a piece of stained red carpet that it rested on and an armchair. We arrive outside the house and chat together for a few minutes and are amused by the sight of the grey filing cabinets that totally obscure the front room. Quite a few neighbours are now watching these 'Men In Black' that are outside the house, but that doesn't stop us carrying out a few pranks in the drive and front garden. We crossed to the other side of the road and stand on the pavement while I take some pictures (unwittingly with flash, but in hindsight this is probably more effective in more ways than one). We wonder what the neighbours might say to our occupant and whether they are friendly with him or regard him as a nutter or what... As we turn the street corner and walk back towards town we see a cartoon advertisment in an estate agents of a duck with a piece of bread in its mouth... and then go to see Genesis P' Orridge`s old house (after going past the Mick Ronson Memorial in a park that is besieged by crazed glue- sniffers shouting in tongues and then we offer necrocards to a couple of goth girls for sexual favours) to meet up with the Molotov Org geezers who were doing a gig with toy instruments in the city square in the middle of a permanent sound installation that samples and reproduces with reverb anything that happens within its periscopic microphones/speakers and do reverse busking by giving away money to the audience (which bitterly complain that it is toy money - well, what did they expect!) as stoned freaks, strangely tattooed vagrants, and kids try to steal their plastic instruments. Day Three: More people want to see the filing cabinets in the house and a larger tour is spontaneously arranged for the Sunday morning. The party walk down the street and finally arrive outside the spot of pilgrimage and immediately the neighbour who had been spying on us the day before runs out towards the group with some sort of Star Trek/TV remote control type device. The next thing that occurs is that the noted conspiracy researcher comes running out of the front door of his house dressed in a pink romper suit with an activated alarm sounding off loudly from around his waist and starts shouting out, "OKAY! So which one of you lot is STEWERT HOME?!?" (which is slightly odd as this person has actually met and interviewed Stewart at length, but having said that as of late Stewart has started to look nothing like his press photos). Group feel that they have unnerved the subject sufficently for the morning and wander off into town for Stewart`s second lecture of the weekend... Back in the arts centre I reveal that the hardback biography of Jeremy Beadle that I picked up from a local bookshop (reduced from sixteen pounds to one pound) reveals that during one of the many jobs that he was sacked from he used to make dildos out of bread and a few pages later due to destitution he was forced to almost kill a duck. Somehow it seems to be smacking of some kind of synchronicity and conspiratorial confusion. The next stage will be to arrange a bus tour... Anyone interested? ;-) BTW On the Sunday morning I left the place that I was staying in and the whole place was crawling with Special Branch and dog-handlers. After a bit of investigation it transpired that the massed bands of the RAF were doing a big gig in the theatre in the same road, or at least that`s what I understood! :-O # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info klf" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email klf@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # KLF discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?klf ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: James Parker Subject: (klf) It's hard being nice Date: 25 Oct 2000 12:57:50 +0100 >>I'm still waiting for my CD from Mike Dutton. There's a wide variety of music that could be called 'chill out'. Here's just a very very small selection of it. Juno Reactor's "Luciana" is an hour long set of deep relaxing rumbling noises. The new "Back To Mine" album by Faithless is a compilation of relaxed acoustic-type mellow songs and is lovely last thing at night. Nick Warren's "Back To Mine" is also great. Moby's "Hymn" is half an hour of long smooth relaxing chords. Alpinestars' "BASIC" is an hour of light melodic atmospheres and mellowness, like an Air album but less pop-orientated. Strange Country's "Strange Country 1" is like Chill Out but a bit quirkier- more of the TV samples, less of the birdnoise-type sounds. Hard to find too. Messiah's "Thunderdome" single cannot be chilled out to. But it's playing now so I thought I'd mention it. I cant beleive that they wont be the same recordings featured on Chill Out, and just about every BBC programme since time began. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info klf" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email klf@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # KLF discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?klf ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Craig Earnshaw Subject: Re: (klf) Chill Out BBC Date: 26 Oct 2000 17:17:53 +0100 Are these the CDs that are produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (or whatever they're called)? Date: 27 Oct 2000 01:07:36 +0100 http://www.eyestorm.com/feature/ED2n_article.asp?article_id=168 You Must Be Joking by Iain Aitch 10/26/00 The annual Root festival of time-based art this year focused on tricks, pranks and interventions. Writer Iain Aitch's diary shows that the most disturbing events had little to do with the festival. Friday 20 October Hull Time Based Art's annual Root festival mixes established artists with new talent, and makes a point Peter of being bang-up-to-date with artists utilizing new Richards, technologies. This year, the festival's eighth, the from theme is tricks, pranks and interventions. I pack my hand-buzzer and set off on my journey from London, much to the derision of colleagues who feel that the idea of an arts event in Hull - one of England's least glamorous northern towns - must be a trick in itself. The pranks begin at King's Cross station. My train to Hull is up on the board, but on double-checking I am informed that it actually starts at Peterborough, not London. I dash to the first train heading north and jump aboard. On changing, I find that the Hull train is actually a kind of glorified bus, and eerily empty. A nun boards at Grantham the journey is scarily reminiscent of a cliched disaster movie. Luckily matters don't slide into actual disaster as I finally make it to my destination. Strolling into town I come across my first band of pranksters: a gang of men and women dressed in those all-in-one biohazard suits used during chemical disasters (and other B-Movie scenarios). I approach them, eager not to miss a performance, when it dawns on me that they are actually from a trade union trying to recruit members in the area, and nothing to do with the festival at all. Oh. First on the bill at the riverside Timebase venue is novelist and provocateur Stewart Home who delivers an overview of the pranksters that have influenced him. Home is best remembered in the artworld for his 1990-1993 Art Strike (for which he stayed in bed and made no art), although always manages to have several pranks and feuds on the go at any given time. 'Pranks lie on the border between art, subversion and publicity,' he says, which is particularly apt when looking back at Home's previous work. In one tabloid-worthy stunt Home handed out flyers to the homeless around London advertising 'free booze, nosh and strippers'. The event they were in fact being invited to was the award party for Britain's most prestigious literary event, the Booker Prize. Largely inspired by the Situationist International - an anarchic 60s movement combining Marxism and media theory - Home has long been a thorn in the side of the media, the literary establishment and the numerous unfortunate individuals who have crossed him. His most celebrated example of the form was the Necrocard, a dead ringer for the National Health Service's organ donor card - the twist being that holders agree to donate their cadaver for post-life sexual activity. One of Home's best pranks within the artworld was his claim to do what the Royal Academy could not: bring 17th Century Dutch painter Jan Vermeer to London. Home's Vermeer II consisted of badly photocopied examples of Vermeer's paintings with splashes of paint added. He claimed that this recreated the feel of other venues where the Vermeer exhibition had toured across Europe; the exhibition proved so popular that visitors often had to stare at the work through opera glasses over crowds ten or more deep. Home's 'Vermeers' were priced according to a multiple pricing system, which meant that one painting was 25, two were 100, three cost 400 and so on. To buy the whole lot would run into several millions. 'Not even Saatchi could afford to buy me out,' he proudly stated. But not all tricksters are so uncompromising, as a lecture by Hans Extrem revealed. Extrem is not afraid to be called a 'sell out'; he has honed his pranking skills specifically for the commercial field. A veteran of electronic artists etoy, Extrem has long been at the forefront of viral marketing and PR trickery - he's an expert in what he refers to as 'media hacking, shock marketing and user branding'. This combination of factors allows Extrem to play creatively with media and public to the advantage of his clients. 'Shock causes a person to open all their channels and allows you to pump in information,' he says. Extrem was involved with etoy when they undertook their Digital Hijack, an early piece of search engine Extrem manipulation that placed etoy at the top of the search strings for terms such as 'porsche'. Their digital trickery allowed them to 'hijack' over 1,000,000 web users in four months. One of ubermorgen.com's recent projects, [v]ote-auction.com, is now hosted outside of the US after intervention by the FBI and various state legal departments. The site is a unique twist on the trend for online auctions such as eBay: American voters put their vote up for auction and political parties are invited to place bids to guarantee a positive result in chosen states. Saturday 21 October I get up early, deciding to familiarize myself with the town. Heading past the train station I bump into Stewart Home. 'Come with me,' he says, setting off at a brisk pace. I follow. Pretty soon we are in what appears to be the student area of Hull. Home stops and mutters something unintelligible. He wanders into the Victorian urinal Community we are standing next to, emerging with a man whom he introduces as John. John is holding a map of the London Underground and explains that we are going to use this to navigate our way to where Home wants to take me. He claims we are currently at Holborn Station and must make our way to Bow Station. An explanation of sorts brings in Freemasonry, MI5 (the UK's secret police), and the revelation that the center of Hull is laid out in the shape of the Union Jack. I nod; it seems foolish to disagree. Home explains that I am participating in a series of unscheduled walks that he has organized while keeping the festival's organizers in the dark. So off we go 'Here we are', Home announces as we come to the end of a leafy residential street. It turns out that the house John is now photographing is inhabited by one of Home's detractors. A neighbour twitches the curtains - Home decides that this means our job is done and we head back into the city centre. Home is obviously something of an expert in paranoia. On the way back through the central square I hear the Islamic call to prayer ring out. People look up, perplexed. It is a simple intervention that works beautifully; this is a noise that most of us will have heard on news reports at some time, and yet here, amongst the white faces of a northern industrial town, it is enigmatically misplaced. The work, Muezzin Daily, by Austria-based Eva Ursprung, is to be repeated at each prayer time over the weekend. The beguiling call is soon drowned out by London-based art-terrorists The Molotov Organization, David with their cacophonous reverse busking. The group of Cotterrell 20-something sometime DJs play toy instruments and race around the audience handing out toy money. The effect would have been greater had they been handing out small amounts of real money, but they draw a crowd nonetheless. The value of the action is largely saved by its interaction with another piece of art - David Cotterrell and Alberto Duman's Voice Over, a sound sculpture which amplifies and echoes Molotov's scraping and blowing. An evening of 60s Fluxus film provides an ideal opportunity for audience interaction and draws shouts, screams and loud farting noises during Yoko Ono's bare-butt film Bottoms. Maurice Le Matre's 1951 work Le Film Est Deja Commenc? (Has the film started?) creates wondrous confusion, and Anthony McCall's beautiful short Line Describing a Circle from 1973 has the audience enthralled as the projection creates a cone of light in the smoke that has been pumped into the theater. By the end of the film the whole audience is on the stage, staring back at the light of the projector in a scene that recalls Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Sunday 22 October The final day of the festival offers a chance to look at Laurencesome of the work in the Ferens Gallery in the town centre. Laurence Lane's BIP uses a turntable and a BIP barcode reader to create an amusing Fluxus- like sound sculpture, whilst Simon Poulter's Afterworld, a digital guillotine, allows the public to experience a real-time decapitation and ascend (or descend) to the afterlife of their choosing. Peter Richards' Cartoons is a bright and likeable selection of photographs taken with a pinhole camera, but their link to the festival theme seems somewhat tenuous. The same is true of Hanno Soans and Catarina Campino's Private Dancer video. There is a great community feel at the festival but this lack of thematic clarity tends to detract from its overall success. Where pranks or interventions are attempted, there is a tendency to re-hash Fluxus feats from the past rather than utilize new technologies to create a new wave of original pranks. Overall there just isn't enough unexpected prankery, or anything particularly dangerous or shocking. Upsetting, provoking or unsettling members of the public has always been the mark of the prankster, and only Great North Eastern Railways has managed that with any consistency over the weekend. Unintentional as those disruptions may have been, as explained, all sorts of organizations from trade unions to corporations - are now appropriating prankster tactics for PR purposes. So it seems that artists wishing to upset the status quo need to raise the stakes, or at least employ a little more wit and poetry to differentiate themselves from the ubiquitous marketing stunt. Paradoxically, while Root may have suffered from the prevalence of trickery in today's society, this very excess at least proves the festival's relevance. As the festival draws to a close the work with most potential is still unfinished. Bill Drummond, former founder-member of notorious pop group The KLF, has started a series of city twinnings, first pairing Belfast with 'your wildest dreams'. Hull was due to be twinned with 'your darkest thoughts', but the road sign remained at the venue throughout the weekend. Once erected, however, Drummond's work will surely promote the kind of discourse that only the best pranks can, as nonplussed motorists perform mental double-takes, and find themselves drawn inexorably towards their 'darkest thoughts'. Prank poetry at it's best.
