Does anyone else live in the Washington, DC area and have you heard the Live Squad's (a morning show on 93.9 WKYS) promo spot? Is he still with them? Orb and orbital? Two different bands, the Ord, is Dr alex Paterson and who ever he fancies having aboard. Orbital are the brothers Hartnoll. The orb's birth was ambient dub i guess whereas orbital came out of the rave (crustie?) scene. Ito confuse matters a bit some orb rimixes use the word 'orbital' which kinda confuses things i guess. if you want to know more i'd suggest a search of www.ubl.com would give you short biographies of the artists (not always that great) and a set of links to fan web sites where you could find more of a history. does that help? There probably wasn't much else classed as Ambient House apart from the above, though Irresistable Force's Flying High is of the same era. Its creator Mixmaster Morris was a regular in the chill out lounges at the early defining clubs of the scene. Its a self-given label others chose the term Ambient Dub, very much taking the orb's template and of strange noises and deep sub bass. THere are some great examples of this stuff. Check the defining series of Ambient Dub Vol 1-3 (skip 4 its poor). Very good then and now. Banco De gaia made his first major appearance on the series. Also very good are the "Chill Your Head" series from Planet Dog records. They were an integral part of developing club and live scene 91-94 and these albums had some great head music on. I don't know anything about that copy, but if it comes from a cassette-tape which has been swapped around for a while it is quite likely that it is the copy-process which has made the track too slow. Every time a tape is copied, its speed is changed a little bit, due to small differencies in the speed of the two cassette decks. If a tape has been copied ten times, for example, the speed can change quite much. / Johan # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info klf" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email klf@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # KLF discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?klf ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2000 18:03:44 +0100 From: "Alex Gould" Subject: (klf) Misunderstood Lyrics heya peeps. I am interested in the KLF and related. I have been listening to the KLF and there other names, for about 5 years, have known about them for slighty longer. seems a bit of an irrelavent mail i know, but I thought i'd introduce myself. :) Anyway, I have rather an intresting recording made in the summer of '95 from Radio 1. It was a 1 hour program hosted by pete tong on 'Present, past and future of Ambient' its a very intresting program and interviews all the main players in the ambient/techno/dub scene. Very good program. Anyway, Dr Alex P is interviewed on the tape and he talks about 'chill out' by the KLF and mentions the time 'they' went to Germany in a barn and had sheep there for a chill out room (it seems thats where they may have got the live recording of the farmer and his sheep on 'chill out' track 3 i think..) I dont know if this was related to the white room 'outer film' incident, either? I dunno, anyway, I am gonna dig that tape up from my collection and have another listen to it. The last time I listened to it was about a year ago, I only have 45mins of the 1hour of the programme but It didnt miss anything important out(only the intro/start). Some fantastic quotes in it too :) I may make a mp3 of it one day, cos it'd be nice to have backed up digitally, and besides theres a guy on it who speaks about ambient music all the way through it (not pete tong! heh) and I would like to know who he is? it may involve posting a snippit of the mp3 to a newsgroup for someone to tell me who he is... chers. lx. (ok i'm thinking of cheating and burning a disk or two of snippets to mix in between tracks if i can get enough inputs.) but what KLF track to play... one of the original mixes of what time is love or 3 am eternal? anyone got any other suggestions. If anyone has any more general suggestions or comments i'd be more than happy to take them, the djing i've done so far has always been indie/goth/80s stuff and though i've always wanted to do something more interesting and this is my first opportunity. thanks dan - -- Internet communications are not secure and therefore Oyster Partners Ltd does not accept legal responsibility for the contents of this message. 'What time is Love?' would be probably the most appropriate historically, but I would try and play the whole Stad House trilogy. Just slip them in discretely and most people won't notice the pattern. They will all go crazy when you play them. I used to play at free parties/raves in the South West of England and played most of the tracks at some time or another. The KLF track which took most people by suprise and had most singing along was 'Justified and Ancient' - a genuine crowd pleaser. >If anyone has any more general suggestions or comments i'd be more >than happy to take them, You want to try and get some Shamen in there somewhere really, any of the singles off 'En-Tact'. 'Stories' by Izit (huge balearic hit) - you may be able to find this one somewhere, or on a compilation 'Raise' by Bocca Juniors - first single on Boy's Own (later Junior Boys Own) 'A Huge ever growing brain that rules......' The Orb (my personal request) Probably loads of others...cant remember them though. CHRIS MORRIS' controversial radio series BLUE JAM is finally set to be released on CD for the very first time.

As well as being something of a unique event in its original broadcast slot on Radio 1, this represents something of a departure for the normally exclusively musical Warp label. "All the people over here have been fans for a long time," explained a spokesman for the label. "It was long process getting it licensed - it's taken over three years. His musical taste is very well-informed, however, and he was quite open to the kind of stuff that we do here."

"We're not looking at it just a Warp record," added the spokesman. "It's much wider than that. It's a thinking person's comedy album."

The show, which was originally commissioned and broadcast in the wake of Morris' Channel 4 current affairs satire show 'Brasseye', represented one of the first spoken word programmes on Radio 1 for quite some years. Featuring a collage of ambient tracks from the likes of Labradford, Brian Eno and Aphex Twin, the electronic music acts as an atmospheric backdrop to Morris' increasingly surreal sense of humour. The album, a compilation of the best sketches from the original Radio 1 broadcasts, also includes a number of skits on famous Radio 1 DJs. "The Chris Moyles one is a killer," said the spokesperson. "They're all there - - Mary Anne Hobbs, Steve Lamacq, Jo Whiley. It=92s a surreal vision of that DJ."

However, the possibility of Warp branching out into light entertainment in a big way remains unlikely. "It's a one-off; we're still very much a music company," said the spokesperson. "Because he's such an original he seemed like one of our artists. He's a bit of a maverick." Blue Jam is released through Warp on October 23rd.
