From what I've been able to glean from the list the late model bikes have improvements in the foam over the '95 and earlier. But yesterday I had a chance to sit on a Corbin without the dip (you may have to read the digests from the first week to get the gist of that) and the difference was considerable. I think the main thing was the width and flatness, the Corbin was at least an 11/2" wider through all the "sensitive" areas. Width and flatness mean comfort if it is in the right place. I'll write with more impressions after this week's Moab rally where I am sure to see a lot of different approaches to seating... KLR Folks, As per Todds request, I'll delve into the past and share why I think my horrible lil KLR died this past week. (tyring to take me out in the process) Well, I have never had a motorcycle before, still dont have a license, just bought the bike (and insurance, I'm not too bad of a person) when my 1996 Nissan 4x4 gave up the ghost trying to cross a lake. Lots of non-warranty damage, had to find smoething cheap/reliable to get to work. Well, I bought the KLR with 5500 miles on it. I had problems from day one. First, while learning how to ride in a parking lot, not 3 minutes into my experience with my new toy, the clutch cable breaks. I live in BFE and cant get another for 6 days, so I "jury-rigged" an ATC brake cable and am back on the road. Not two days later, I have to puch my bike to the dealership, as it starts right up, but when I shift into gear and let the clutch out, it kills. Hmm, at this point the dealer sinds that thekick-stand safety deal is bad, the cable was sticking, thinking that my kickstand was down and wouldnt let me get into gear. Urgh! The whole reason I dreamed of a KLR/BMW PD was for an expedition vehicle, cruise reliablly to S.American, etc. Well, forget it with something with safety features, I'll stick with an old 4x4 that actaully will get me thier reliabley. At the same time, the dealer noticed that it was low on oil. Hmm. Every 150 miles I check it, and its a qaurt low. It only holds 2.5, so I learned it was burning oil. Probably the rings? Well, i had just topped it off the day prior when the engine seized from lack of oil. Must of got pretty bad. Now, the motor cranks over, but makes scratching noise. I am going to fix it and sell it and use the $ to put a nice diesel motor in my full size Bronco. Sorry folks, just had alot of problems with this dream of mine. Peek inside and you will find two (at least) sets of terminals, each one with four festively colored screws. The red and green terminals make the phone work, the other two were introduced in the `60s to make the lights work on the Princess phone. To hook up your second line you'll need to get the red and green connection of the second (new) terminals inside your house. This is most easily done by using the black and yellow wires of the existing wiring. In fact, there are switch boxes and two-line phones available that use the red\green pair for line 1 and the black\yellow pair for line 2. If you need to test the lines you can use the modular plugs located inside the grey box outside. Plug a phone in here and you can make sure both lines are active. You can also identify which line is which by dialing a special number. In our area you can dial 890 and a message will respond with the phone number you are dialing from. This number varies arounds the country however, so check with the telco for your area. - J. Sound like your bike lived a realy hard life prior to your purchasing it. This possibility is one of the reasons I bought a new one (aside from the fact that I could'nt *find* a used one). The sidestand saftey switch is one widely acknowleged fault with the KLR and is commonly eliminated by owners. As for the cable, well, they are expendable Items and need to be replaced regularly as a PM item. At $20, this aint such a bad thing. If you disagree with that you may as well click the delete key right now. I got my Corbin saddle back last night and it is really looking primo! I gotta tell you it has been a first class interaction all the way. If you already know some of this story then bear with me while I bring the others up to speed. After I got back from Daytona last month, we had a cold spell here in Dallas and temps got below freezing a couple days so the bike stayed parked about a week while I warmed up. I went back out to the bike and found 2 concentric rings of blisters in the seat. I called Corbin, they said send it back and let them take a look at it. I did, I also included detailed pictures and description of the problem. A week or two later I called to check on the seat and the fella I talked to said, it had been determined that the leather was defective and they would recover it at no charge and that it would ship on the 15th. Great! I was really glad as I knew the seat wouldn't hold up many years with those blisters. Anyway, last year I had gone out to the Castroville factory, (they are now in Hollister, and had the seat made for me. While I was there I had them bore a hole through the seat to allow a connection to a Widder vest to pass through. The hole was covered with a cool looking velcro patch and worked well... too well. As people would come up to look at the seat they would grab that patch and pull it open. This eventually pulled the leather away from the seat and it began to look like it had cellulite in a couple areas around the patch. So I asked... "As long as your recovering it could you leave out the patch??" "Sure" the fella says. Great this really worked out well, but we're not done yet. A week or so later... on the 12th I was having a conversation with another KLR owner and I recommended if he gets a Corbin seat that he have the rear corners scalloped to allow him to get his hands around the grab rails better. "Great idea" he said.... Yeah it is... I thought, I wish I had done it. I thought about it all day and called Corbin on the 13th. I wish I could remember the name of the fella I talked to cause it was the same guy each time. Anyway I asked if they could do the scalloping thing to my seat. "he said he could but that they had finished my seat and it was shipping that day, (note that the saddle was done 2 days early). "Oh shoot... Oh well... Hmmmm tell you what..." I said, "... Since the seat is already there, how much would it cost to pull the seat off the shipping dock and have the scalloping done", he thought a minute and said "If I don't call you back, we'll do it for nothing." "OK great" I said. So I installed the seat last night, everything was at no charge, I paid the shipping back to the factory they paid it back to me. The saddle couldn't be better. I have had several interactions with Corbin and they have all been this good. - -- Jim Barthell - TX '99 Iron Butt Rally '97 'C-O-O-O-W'...asaki KiLleR 650 FSSNOC #2421 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 17:51:36 -0500 From: Jim Barthell Subject: (klr650) Moab Is there an attendance list yet? Well, there isn't a lot of room for me and I find that I'm pushed forward against the tank and wind up getting my balls squeezed between me and the tank. This gets uncomfortable in a big hurry. My daughter (5'8", 130 lbs) loves it however. She feels secure and comfortable and likes being able to lean back against the box. I'm six feet tall and weigh 210lbs. I guess the point is that there isn't a ton of room for two and the seat shape forces the driver down into the vee and against the tank. Maybe a flatter seat would help. In any case, I don't plan to do any long two-ups the way the bike is now. Bob, I always carry my cellular phone. You only need to break down on the interstate or in the boonies and have to walk to a phone for help once to realize the importance of this item. When riding off road I carry a can of fix-flat for emergencies. Other than that I take extra care doing preventive maintenance before any rides of any length. For the passenger I think it would be great since its so much wider in the rear. However for the operator there is a dip that I like because of being so short but does cause you to slide foreward when rideing... Its a preference kinda thing. cio evan 98 KLR650 91K100RS 85K100RT 83R100RS 83R80GS 82R80RT >>> "Germain Gagnon" 04/20/98 08:02PM >>> The original seat of my KLR is not to bad for my point of view.
