Mount the magnet just ahead of the front tire, with negative (or positive?) polarity to blast any metallic abjects away from your bike. This may also cause you to wheelie unintentionally over manhole covers, but, hey, I think its worth it. Wait a minute, this could mean great fun on metal bridges!!! A great anti-theft device also once thieves start hearing about those crazy KLRs that will wheelie unintentionally! I`ve had three tanks welded in the past, o= ne motorcycle and two were truck tanks. The main problem (as mentioned) was finding someone willing to do it regardless of methods used. Many eons ago= I tried welding a crack in my Honda XL500 tank by filling it with water, knowing that the water would draw away a lot of heat, but I wanted to try = it anyway. It didn`t work very well, I couldn`t get good penetration and the water was tempering the weld. There are many folks on the LIST that have made improvements to their suspensions - I am sure someone can help you. As for me, I upgraded my front suspension by putting in Progressive front fork springs. They really helped a lot and I have never "bottomed out" since. Also, they really help prevent "front fork diving" under hard braking! You can read about Progressive Springs on the KLR page under articles in the "Technical" and Accessories" pages. Also, check the "Anatomy of a KLR" page and click on "suspension" - there is information there on Progress and even installation of Progressive front fork springs! Let me know if I can be of further help. MSR makes some epoxy putty called Quiksteel that works for patching holes in gas tanks, engine cases and all kinds of things. They say it is made with steel fibers and you are supposed to be able to tap, file, cut and grind it when it is set up. I have used it on patching up engines and it works great. Sticks well and no leaks. I have never tried to tap a hole in it though. Sells for $4.95. It works like a large metal detector but instead of making a speaker buzz it lakes a light change. Here is a tip: Put your bike on the kickstand. I guess it puts some metal closer to the sensor. I have a heavy carbon built up on them, really thick layer in some places. Is there some magic chemical that can be used or/and with some mechanical way clean off the carbon. Why I have the the cylhead dissambled, it's because the valve meet the piston, and that's not so good. And all of this because the balancer-chain break off. Can anyone give me a _detailed_ set of differences (equipment, street focus, dirt focus etc) between the KLR and the now discontinued KLX650. 2. I've read pretty much everything (printed and online) on Suzukis, Kawi's, Hondas and KLMs incl. the Motorcycle Online review of the KLX, XR and DR. I want a 50/50 (street/dirt) bike that is comfy for long rides (exploring distant parts of the Pacific Northwest via as many unpaved methods as possible) plus trips down to Baja etc. I don't think that the XR is that (I know it's great in the dirt). I _think_ I want a little more dirt ability than the KLR (which everyone seems to describes as a 70/30). But since this will be first time on dirt, what the !@#$ do I know. Right now, I'm looking seriously at the DR, which I have heard descibed as a 60/40, in between the KLR and the XR + I like it's ergonomics. I'm wondering if the KLX (with an a/m tank) would be also worth considering, but I can find very little info about it.
