I've got the AAA trip ticks sitting here in front of me... I'm anxious to go before it gets too cold. I've heard it's great riding with about 1,200(?) miles of trails in four different sections of the forest, but the information they mailed me is on the ambiguous side. I like screwing around and going where the wind blows me, but if there's anything I can't miss there... I have a GPS... so I can use coordinates. I also have a few maps the division of forestry sent me. The maps are horrible. I've already been advised to avoid toothless old men tending to illegal stills. Thanks. There are a number of good substitutes for the present "Cheapo" glass fuse holder. A standard automotive "in-line" blade type fuse holder would work fine. Also, having been a military pilot I remember the many "pull-Push" type circuit breakers we had to check prior to each flight. Actually, the aircraft type circuit breakers are not designed to be constantly pushed and pulled but the limited times one would need to use one on a KLR would not be a factor. The issue is not what type of fuse holder to use but rather, where and how to mount the holder so it is easily accessible and yet somewhat protected from the elements. My KLR is parked at my friends house in Baton Rouge so don't have it here to play with. I'm sure there is a spot someplace. Why don't you look around and see what you can come up with. They are about half way through the trip and I'm hoping to get a few articles and comments as well as pictures from the group. I'll post them on the web page. I have received a number of requests from folks asking about Pancho Villa Tours - I called Skip (the owner) and he is willing to send a News Letter to anyone who wants one. The latest news Letter has just been published and details all the tours for the coming year. Call Pancho Villa at: 800-233-0564 and ask for the News Letter. You can visit the Pancho Villa Web Site at: http://www.panchovilla.com/ It has information on all the tours presently being offered. If anyone has an interest in putting together a group for a tour I think it could be done! There are two tours I'm particularly interested in. One is a short tour to Veracruz and the other is the La Mariposa tour (butterfly Tour) Check them out on the web page for details. I hope I don't sound like a "Testimonial" for Pancho. It is just that I recognize an opportunity in this company to provide a great Mexico experience to those who might be interested. I have been on a number of Pancho Tours as well as lead a few - this is a quality company that is run by a guy who loves motorcycling and riding in Mexico - a great way to see the country to our South! The spoked rim of the KLR is not airtight so you wouldn't be able to run it without a tube. As a matter of fact, the dealer I got my Avons from accidentally put in a tubeless front, and it has held up fine after 8,000 miles or so. The suggestions on 14, 15, 16T were informative. I'd still like to hear if anyone knows how to make the change in the transmission. Yes that would still be a compromise, but much more convenient than pulling over to change sprockets each time my riding changed. As far as the secret to longevity all I've done is change the oil. And I refuse even under penalty of death to reveal which method I use. I have had absolutely no problems. Maybe I can track down the original owner and ask him. He put the first 80,000 miles on it. Either he worked out all the bugs or we are both just lucky. There must be higher mileage KLRs around.
