I was right. Eric makes a comment here about "out of the box solution" IMO jetting is not expected to be perfect...what we are talking about is whether you have to modify the bike to get the carb to fit. Here are Eric's posts: Date: Tue, 11 Aug 1998 23:04:35 +0100 From: "Eric Dietiker" Subject: Re: (klr650) KLR engine/carb/exhaust mods Hi Wilfred, I installed a White Brothers 38mm Mikuni carb kit, SuperTrapp IDS and K&N air filter. Contrary to the advertising, it was not an out of the box solution since the jetting was so far off. I am still working towards the proper jetting. (This probably takes me longer than most folks, since I don't get much time to fiddle with my bike.) At this point I feel I have gotten significant power improvements across the board, at the expense of drivablility. However, the personality of the bike is completely changed. I think because of the carburetor throttle response is much more direct. So the whole bike has a raw, rebellious edge to it - personality! If I can ever arrange it, I would like to have the bike jetted properly on a dyno. At that point, I'll report my findings here. For now my only measurement is the wheelie-o-meter. I've also added Progressive Suspension springs & Race Tech gold valve (must haves), a MAP Engineering front disk (pricey, but brutally effective, and gorgeous), and a PS rear shock (dissapointingly harsh for street riding, but much better controlled than the stock waterbed. No hard facts, just seat of the pants impression, and the imperfect wheelie-ometer. I still haven't gotten the jetting dialed in as nicely as the stock set up. But I'm very slow about these things. It may not be too difficult... I contacted Baja Designs about this same thing. The replied that they do not offer a stator re-wind for the KLR (or my TDM) because it is a three phase stator. They only consider doing most street bikes if they have a large number of the same model to re-wind. .Also said that the alternator usually needs to be changed out. I have been in contact with a company that produces stators and regulators for bikes. I just found them on the web the other day. Their rep informed me they have a regulator for the KLR currently available that can withstand 300 watts, at $112. He also informed me the stator from an XT600 is basically the same unit, he didn't have info available on the stator just now, but we can assume it is greater than stock, and they should be able to increase the stator output even higher if need be. Oh, sorry, I forgot, they currently have a stator for the XT, but not the KLR, but it should work. I plan to run a test with them soon. I will keep y'all informed. Sorry to be a tease, but I want to make sure this will work. To those individuals who would be interested, send me an email with subject "KLR YES". I will count them up and let the company know if many are interested, as I expect them to be. Please, after midnight or so on Wednesday, don't send any more! HOO HOO! That 'thumb' is solid brass making it possible to vibrate out of spec even faster, though it's long enough that it would be stopped by the starter motor before it could fall out on the trail. I'd considered using a minute dab of locktite. Your idea of a small piece of nylon might be better. Each time it has been low on water on the low side of the bike as it sits on the kick stand (also the vent side). The fluid level through the cells was almost 45 degrees from low to high. Fluid is obviously being lost out the low side vent. The bike has been ridden aggressively off road and " gently" laid over a couple of times ...Artie Johnson style. Here is my question; does anyone see any reason why the vent hose shouldn't make a loop higher than the top of the battery so it doesn't splash out so easily? I can't, unless its trapping flammable hydrogen in a looped tube and that is pretty far fetched. The stock vent points down, is this also the case on other brands of batteries?
