Boys and girls, First, take a look at the subject line I wrote. Repeat 50 times and think about it. Got it? OK. If your panicking, you're not thinking rationally. You're not going to follow a 10-step program. You're going to react instinctively, or better, you're going to react based on your training. Jeff, just like the military training, right? Jumping into a swimming pool with all your gear on. Practice, practice, practice... Get your protective gear on, take your bike to a large section of parking lot, your back yard, your driveway, somewhere where there aren't any cars around. Now practice first rolling around very slowly and slamming your brakes on, front, rear, combined. Do this for a while and you will develop a feel for your bike, and how it reacts, etc.. C'mon folks, build this up gradually. Eventually, you will be doing stoppies, sliding the rear with brake or engine compression, etc.. Practice worst case scenarios so when they do happen, you have developed some experience, so you wont panic. You will react based on your training. You will never be able to prepare yourself for every possible situation, but by screwing around in a parking lot, and learning more about how your bike reacts to your input, the better off you will be when that airplane lands on the highway in front of you. Didn't happen to me, but it did happen on the stretch of highway near my residence (GA 400 last year). Point is, wierd stuff happens. OK, so we will all be riding like Gary Rothwell for Moab next year, right? ;) I'm doing my part every day when I ride. For the most part, every time I go riding, I try a little something stupid, and see what happens. As I get comfortable with the stupid things I do, I push further and get "stupider". By doing this, I get more familiar with my bike. Mark Wilson, remember me coming at you doing a stand-up wheelie by my garage, another day doing little stoppies with my new MAP rotor, another day flat out smoking your butt on GA 180? I practice doing stupid things, and I am very good at stupid things and pride myself by getting better each and every day at doing stupid things. Thinks my blood sugar is getting low, any one out there on an insulin pump? I just got started on a MiniMed. Respond off list. Cheers.. The best way to achieve maximum braking is to apply both brakes fully without locking either wheel. Squeeze and apply steady pressure. Remember to keep the clutch pulled in as you downshift to first gear. Sit straight on the motorcycle and look well ahead-don't look at the ground. **** The way I read the above is and the way I was taught in my MSF class is to keep the clutch pulled during the emergency stop while clicking down through the gears until I get to first gear.
