Hi all, I am looking at a 1987 KLR650 which someone is selling locally. The bike has 22000 miles on it. The previous owner has all oil changes, air filter cleanings, and valve adjustments documented. It has been dropped a low speed a few times. This has bent the fairing slightly, as well a the passenger foot peg. As far as I can tell the things it needs are: chain a sprockets, steering head bearings (maybe just a re-pack and adjust, but I must be pessimistic), clutch lever, tires (not immediate, but soon). It seems to run very well, EXCEPT the previous owner says that at around 4500 rpm it will occasionally go 'dead'. The lights go off, the tach drops to zero, and the engine dies. As soon as the rpm's drop below ~4000 it starts running again. I don't have much experience with motorcycle electrics so this is where I need some advice. Could this be caused by what I think is called the "CDI box"? I think this could be rather expensive to fix, right? The guy will sell the bik! e to me for $1000. I was thinking that if I put another $500 into it, it could be a great ride. $1500 for an '87, is that sane? I guess the thing that could significantly increase the cost of the bike would be the source of the electrical problem. Any advice? The KLR ran superbly. We didn't however ride down to the bottom. I'm too old and maybe too wise. We did hire a driver to drive us down. 4 hours to go 40 miles. The road it a truck and a half wire. The car going down hill backs up for the one going up. Unless it is the local Junta in a Humvee (one of ours) in that case you just get the hell out of the way. If any one is planning to go in January DO by all means. I'll answer any questions. The road to certainly doable, I just don't have the vision or skill level. May I tap this great pool of wisdom. I need a street helmet. My Arai DS/r is great for the KLR ( read speeds of under 75 mph ), but on my other scoot, the wind noise is _deafening_. Can anyone recommend to me an outstanding street helmet? I know a few of you have street bikes. I want one that is quiet, light, comfortable, easy to change shields and of course stylin'. TIA. 'Twould make for a pretty long road trip -- I can only drive one hour a day if I want to be able to hear when I get old... Took 2 hours at 70 mph to do the same thing.
