I took piece of steel 1/2" wide, 1/4" thick and a perfect 2.5" long . I then filed out a notch on one end to fit the spoke and on the other end I drilled and filed out a square to fit the drive of the torque wrench. For simple numbers in the formula, be sure and have the center of the drive hole and the center of the notch exactly 2". Remeber, when torquing spokes, check the rim run-out afterwords, you may have to readjust. Because of this, I torque my spokes at 27in.lbs., this allows me to tighten or loosen to true my rim and still stay within the range of 17 to 35 inlbs.. He stopped by my house tonight a little before dark with his new bike, and his adorable little 5 year old daughter on the back. >>IMOA,this little package is too precious to be on the "back", and motocross course?? So we went on a little ride. It turns out that there is a little "mini moto-cross" course in a big flat empty field about a mile from my house. I've lived here over three years, and never even knew it was there, but I kind of suspected there was something like it. Anyway, it's got lots of little jumps and really tight hairpin turns which are all bermed up and pretty deep and soft. Well, there goes Don, with little Danielle hanging on for all she was worth, >>with those little legs dangling, not being able to see squat, nothing short of irresponsible! >>all she can do is "hang-on". If she MUST be on the bike, would it not be safer if she were in front [as small as she is] of papa? >>I don't mean to go off on anyone, but the thought of you laying your bike down twice, and he "leading the way " w/ daughter hangin' on "for all she was worth" gives me a chill. It was the Highland Outback from Sweden. I was a little miffed at the lack of response when I posted it as many of us had seen their website and there had been a few posts from motorcycle shows. But few actual sightings. This was it in the flesh and blood. The site should be valid, here it is again... http://members.tripod.com/ajaxut/ There is an unconfirmed report that the Highland people are looking for more capital and that they have begun negotiating with KTM. Maybe this is the genesis of the "8" that Morgan talked about. The bike pictured is a kind of hybrid with the high front fender but the motard wheels. The consultant was selling it for $12,000 and said it was not DOT approved. I picked up Bert Fox's '96 DR650SE at a price that was too good to resist. Tim Bernard told me that it was related to financial hardships for he and his wife. I'm sorry for that. After taking it for a good long ride I confirmed to myself exactly what Gino reported in an early report in the "Dual Sport Alliance" it is a heck of a bike. I'm not a good off-ride rider and I need help wherever I can get it. The DR is lighter, lower, more nimble in every respect. It's suspension stock is far better than the KLR. On the ride with my son, two-up I went to some places that my KLR would've been bottoming out like crazy. Never came close with the DR. But all of this is no surprise. The DR can't compare to the KLR for longer jaunts and then going off-road. So, I'm going to make the DR my primary dual-sport bike and look for something that is better for two-up road/fire-road riding. I've been struggling with this for two years...the two-up thing. I like the ST-1100 but don't like giving up the fire-road thing. Then there is the big LT's, the new BMW gets raves. Then there are the big dual-sport bikes. I want to ride a Guzzi Quota next. Would those of you who do some two-up riding mind carrying on a thread about this under NKLR? I can well imagine that I'll be back to a KLR again. I spent yesterday stripping my bike of the goodies I've put on it over the last two years. Amazing the pile I came up with. At one point I exclaimed, "no wonder it weighed 440 lbs"...Kimberly suggested I load the whole pile of it and go get it weighed. I fell in love with it all over again as I restored it to stock. It is such an extraordinary and versatile machine... Lastly, a reason for my move is that DSN is struggling to get out of its KLR roots and I don't know of any better way to move in that direction than to cut myself off from my first love. Call it a kind of abstinence on the part of the new editor (g). Doin about 80-85 I realized that I was in the high 6000 rpms will this shorten the lifespan of my a-13. I would consider going down one tooth on my rear sprocket but I have ridden some slow, technical sections of trail that I need the low end punchiness for. He was fine. he was wearing an Aerostitch ballistic nylon suit with knee armor and he had a great set of gloves with palm studs. the nylon was torn here and there but his jeans underneath were not marked. some studs on his gloves were gone and two fingers were worn through but his hands were not marked. This place that he went down was in the local riding mecca for north east New Jersey/southeast New york, Harriman State Park, Seven Lakes drive Just coming out of the circle by the park manager's office. Immediately there were six riders there to help. we blocked traffic, got his bike up and off the road and kicked lots of dirt onto the oilslick on the road,(Cracked case) and checked him out. Luckily, he had AAA and they towed him out. Tim's radiator guard Juan, I went to the hardware store and bought 2 additional longer bolts for a total of four to mount both of the radiator guards. The shorter bolts were too much of a hassle to try to mount the additional thickness of the radiator guards to the attachments. Just like Tom said. Hope this helps. Oh yeah try not to move the handlebars too much when you have the bolts out, the reason is ,doing so may slightly push attachment mounts out of alignment.
