It's a lot like the F650...but I believe it has the 5-valve motor.......I rode my KLR across Idaho last summer, followed by about a dozen F650s and a few GSs. It was a ride (Nez Perce Dual Sport Ride) across the Frank Church Wilderness put on by the Idaho BMW/BMW club (Bavarian Mountain West). It was fun - 600 miles across the Idaho wilderness, almost all on dirt and mud (it rained a lot) The KLR is a little lighter, and more maneurable in the dirt - quicker, at least in that environment. But the F650 owners sure do love those motors! The Nez Perce Ride was a rolling rally and was pretty fun, too. We had a VW Synchro van loaded with beer and steaks following us to each campsite. Interested KLR riders could go on this rolling rally, the Idaho BMW club appreciates the variety of bikes and riders. One could follow it up with the Stanley Stomp, a foodfest immediately following the Nez Perce Dual Sport Ride. I did, and lived to tell about it. It sounds like the plates may be shorted in the battery or the fuse holders are slightly corroded or the voltage drop accross the starter solenoid is to much, I believe 9.6 volts is the max drop. A simple volt meter, like a RADIO SHACK special is all you need. Use it ACROSS the terminals of the battery +/- , and the starter solenoid and the fuses and this will clear up the mystery and leave you with a valuable tool for the future.
