I'll try this... AGAIN! ;) OK there is the piston in the caliper. Inside the piston, there is this wierd plastic-like thing that seats inside of the piston. Basically the piston looks like a bucket, with a round thing inside of it, filling it. This thing is what actually makes contact with the brake pad. Now that I am thinking about it, for all I know, that was a shipping protector that my $!#@$^!!! POS dealer didn't take off. Based on the reactions of the list, I really think that may be the case. After a few thousand miles, they basically fell apart. I tore off a buckle without much force, even taking into account my superhuman-strength of course. I brought the boots down to a local shoe-guy, asked him to resew all the straps to strengthen them, that wasn't such a big deal. Then for Thansgiving weekend I went camping, and the sole of the boot started to seperate from the uppers, thus soaking my feet. To the recent question about getting a Joe Rocket jacket, I would not give that company another chance, I do not plan to ever purchase Rocket Gear. These boots are 2-3 months old. It's just a guess but I think all gear manufacturers are actually garment contractors, and have outsourced production...in the case of boots, I would guess China....so they're out, in my book...Chinese stuff never fits me...there aren't any Chinamen my size........I'm still interested in input on the "rocktex" ballistic jacket, anyway. It has taken some hard hits and has a good dent in a third of the front. Yes I do recall that sudden stop! I had to grind out the access hole a litle for the oil drain to clear. Also grind a bit where the kick starter lever hit at he end of the stroke tho that may have been possible to adjust out as the clamps holding it in place at somewhat adjustable for placement. When I first got it it did not seem to protect the water pump as much as expected. Tho after 1 1/2 seasons of dirt/trail riding inluding falling down, owie that hurts, hitting rocks etc, I can say as a recreational trail rider it has done it's job. It does come up on the sides partially covering the pump as noted in earlier posts. - Dan P, COG 2877, AMA 549865, CMA, UMCI '93 KLX650R Baja d/s kit 'Dirt Boss' '00 KLR650 'Urban Assault Bike' '98 Kaw Concours ZG1000 'Grrr' 51K miles '70 Suzuki T500 Titan 'Dayjavoo' Yo Ho, Yo Ho, it's a bikers life for me! So what are these charges Richard is talking about ??? >> Effective last summer, I think July 1, a new tourist permit system was put into effect. The formerly free tourist permit now costs 150 pesos (currently there are 9.2 pesos per US dollar). The process is that you stop at an immigration office at the border and then take the form to a bank to pay the fee. The permit is then good for 6 months. This is a good deal for someone like myself who goes to Baja often but not so good for someone going just once. The checkpoint south of Ensenada, at Maneadero, is not open as of my return earlier this week. There is an immigration office in Ensenada across from the shipyard as you come into town that is more convenient than the one at the border IMHO. The much publicized vehicle deposit does not apply to Baja, only the Mainland. The whole process is more complicated than in the past but my Mexican friends tell me that it is nothing compared to what Mexicans have to go through to get a US tourist visa and I understand the US charges a $40.00 fee to Mexicans coming here. Some Mexican insurance companies have a clause that invalidates your policy if you are not in the country with proper permits so that is a pretty strong incentive to do it by the book. You will need a passport or birth certificate to get the tourist permit. If I can help you with any info contact me off list. The sole where it is bonded to the upper leather had voids. The sole needs stiffening..my arch got sore from the pressure of the footpegs was centered. The Rocket uses coating on its Cordura, making it waterproof/resistant, but it doesn't breathe well in hot weather. Also, the Rocket's shoulder pads tended to 'balloon up' at speed. Motoport uses uncoated Cordura - you'll get a little wet in hot rainy weather, but it breathes well - a good thing. In cold rainy weather under 55 deg.F or so, I use Motoport's Gore-Tex waterproof thermal liner under the jacket Motoport pants. With just a T-shirt and shorts the combo works well down to about 30 deg. F. The Kilamanjaro gets high marks too, but I don't see them in South Florida.
